Event-based Corpuscular Model for Quantum Optics Experiments

A corpuscular simulation model of optical phenomena that does not require the knowledge of the solution of a wave equation of the whole system and reproduces the results of Maxwell's theory by generating detection events one-by-one is presented. The event-based corpuscular model is shown to give a unified description of multiple-beam fringes of a plane parallel plate, single-photon Mach-Zehnder interferometer, Wheeler's delayed choice, photon tunneling, quantum erasers, two-beam interference, double-slit, and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm and Hanbury Brown-Twiss experiments.

Event-by-event simulation of quantum eraser experiments with single photons

We present a computer simulation model that is a one-to-one copy of a quantum eraser experiment with photons (P. D. D. Schwindt {\sl et al.}, Phys. Rev. A 60, 4285 (1999)). The model is solely based on experimental facts, satisfies Einstein's criterion of local causality and does not require knowledge of the solution of a wave equation. Nevertheless, the simulation model reproduces the averages as obtained from the wave mechanical description of the quantum eraser experiment, proving that it is possible to give a particle-only description of quantum eraser experiments with photons. We demonstrate that although the visibility can be used as a measure for the interference, it cannot be used to quantify the wave character of a photon. The classical particle-like simulation model renders the concept of wave-particle duality, used to explain the outcome of the quantum eraser experiment with photons, superfluous.

Coexistence of full which-path information and interference in Wheelers delayed choice experiment with photons

We present a computer simulation model that is a one-to-one copy of an experimental realization of Wheeler's delayed choice experiment that employs a single photon source and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer composed of a 50/50 input beam splitter and a variable output beam splitter with adjustable reflection coefficient $R$ (V. Jacques {\sl et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 220402 (2008)). For $0\le R\le 0.5$, experimentally measured values of the interference visibility $V$ and the path distinguishability $D$, a parameter quantifying the which-path information WPI, are found to fulfill the complementary relation $V^2+D^2\le 1$, thereby allowing to obtain partial WPI while keeping interference with limited visibility. The simulation model that is solely based on experimental facts, that satisfies Einstein's criterion of local causality and that does not rely on any concept of quantum theory or of probability theory, reproduces quantitatively the averages calculated from quantum theory. Our results prove that it is possible to give a particle-only description of the experiment, that one can have full WPI even if D=0, V=1 and therefore that the relation $V^2+D^2\le 1$ cannot be regarded as quantifying the notion of complementarity.

Event-by-event simulation of quantum phenomena

We discuss recent progress in the development of simulation algorithms that do not rely on any concept of quantum theory but are nevertheless capable of reproducing the averages computed from quantum theory through an event-by-event simulation. The simulation approach is illustrated by applications to Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm experiments with photons.

Event-by-event simulation of the Hanbury Brown-Twiss experiment with coherent light

We present a computer simulation model for the Hanbury Brown-Twiss experiment that is entirely particle-based and reproduces the results of wave theory. The model is solely based on experimental facts, satisfies Einstein's criterion of local causality and does not require knowledge of the solution of a wave equation. The simulation model is fully consistent with earlier work and provides another demonstration that it is possible to give a particle-only description of wave phenomena, rendering the concept of wave-particle duality superfluous.

Breaking of the number-of-constituent-quark scaling for identified-particle elliptic flow as a signal of phase change in low-energy data taken at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC)

We argue that measurements of identified-particle elliptic flow in a wide energy range could shed light on the possible phase change in high-energy heavy ion collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). When the hadronization process is dominated by quark coalescence, the number-of-constituent-quark (NCQ) scaling for the identified-particle elliptic flow can serve as a probe for studying the strong interacting partonic matter. In the upcoming RHIC low-energy runs, the NCQ scaling behavior may be broken because of the change of the effective degrees of freedom of the hot dense matter, which corresponds to the transition from the dominant partonic phase to the dominant hadronic phase. A multiphase transport model is used to present the dependence of NCQ scaling behavior on the different hadronization mechanisms.

Measurement of Non-photonic Electrons in p + p Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV with reduced detector material in STAR

In this paper, we present our analysis of mid-rapidity non-photonic electron (NPE) production at pT >0.2GeV/c in p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. The dataset is about 78M TOF-triggered events taken from RHIC year 2008 runs. Through the measurement of e/πratio, we find that the photonic background electrons from gamma conversions are reduced by about a factor of 10 compared with those in STAR previous runs due to the absence of inner tracking detectors and the supporting materials. The dramatic increase of signal-to-background ratio will allow us to improve the precision on extracting the charm cross-section via its semi-leptonic decays to electrons.

Event-by-event simulation of double-slit experiments with single photons

We present a computer simulation model that reproduces, event-by-event, the wave mechanical results of double-slit and two-beam interference experiments. The same model also simulates a one-to-one copy of a single-photon interference experiment with a Fresnel biprism (Jacques V. et al., Eur. Phys. J. D, 35 (2005) 561). The model satisfies Einstein's criterion of local causality and is solely based on experimental facts, comprising the apparatuses used in the experiment and the observation of individual detector clicks. Our results prove that it is possible to give a particle-only description of single-photon double-slit experiments.

Parton Distributions at Hadronization from Bulk Dense Matter Produced at RHIC

We present an analysis of $Ω$, $Ξ$, $Λ$ and $ϕ$ spectra from Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV in terms of distributions of effective constituent quarks at hadronization. Consistency in quark ratios derived from various hadron spectra provides clear evidence for hadron formation dynamics as suggested by quark coalescence or recombination models. We argue that the constituent quark distribution reflects properties of the effective partonic degrees of freedom at hadronization. Experimental data indicate that strange quarks have a transverse momentum distribution flatter than that of up/down quarks consistent with hydrodynamic expansion in partonic phase prior to hadronization. After the AMPT model is tuned to reproduce the strange and up/down quark distributions, the model can describe the measured spectra of hyperons and $ϕ$ mesons very well where hadrons are formed through dynamical coalescence.

Baryon-Strangeness correlations in Parton/Hadron transport model for Au + Au collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV

Baryon-strangeness correlation (C$_{BS}$) has been investigated with a multi-phase transport model (AMPT) in $^{197}$Au + $^{197}$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. The centrality dependence of C$_{BS}$ is presented within the model, from partonic phase to hadronic matter. We find that the system still reserve partial predicted signatures of C$_{BS}$ after parton coalescence. But after hadronic rescattering, the predicted signatures will be obliterated completely. So it seems that both coalescence hadronization process and hadronic rescattering are responsible for the disappearance of the C$_{BS}$ signatures.

Transverse momentum and pseudorapidity dependences of $'\bm{Mach-like}'$ correlations for central Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

The transverse momentum and pseudorapidity dependences of partonic {`\it{Mach-like}'} shock wave have been studied by using a multi-phase transport model (AMPT) with both partonic and hadronic interactions. The splitting parameter $D$, i.e. half distance between two splitting peaks on away side in di-hadron azimuthal angular ($Δϕ$) correlations, slightly increases with the transverse momentum of associated hadrons ($p^{assoc}_T$), which is consistent with preliminary experimental trend, owing to different interaction-lengths/numbers between wave partons and medium in strong parton cascade. On the other hand, the splitting parameter $D$ as a function of pseudorapidity of associated hadrons ($η^{assoc}$), keeps flat in mid-pseudorapidity region and rapidly drops in high-pseudorapidity region, which is as a result of different violent degrees of jet-medium interactions in the medium that has different energy densities in the longitudinal direction. It is proposed that the research on the properties of {`\it{Mach-like}'} correlation can shed light on the knowledge of both partonic and hadronic interactions at RHIC.
