Orbit classification in a disk galaxy model with a pseudo-Newtonian central black hole

We numerically investigate the motion of stars on the meridional plane of an axially symmetric disk galaxy model, containing a central supermassive black hole, represented by the Paczynski-Wiita potential. By using this pseudo-Newtonian potential we can replicate important relativistic properties, such as the existence of the Schwarzschild radius. After classifying extensive samples of initial conditions of trajectories, we manage to distinguish between collisional, ordered, and chaotic motion. Besides, all starting conditions of regular orbits are further classified into families of regular orbits. Our results are presented through modern color-coded basin diagrams on several types of two-dimensional planes. Our analysis reveals that both the mass of the black hole (in direct relation with the Schwarzschild radius) as well as the angular momentum play an important role in the character of orbits of stars. More specifically, the trajectories of low angular momentum stars are highly affected by the mass of the black hole, while high angular momentum stars seem to be unaffected by the central black hole. Comparison with previous related outcomes, using Newtonian potentials for the central region of the galaxy, is also made.

Effect of Multipole Moments in the Weak Field Limit of a Black Hole Plus Halo Potential

In this paper, we consider a Newtonian system whose relativistic counterpart describes a superimposed halo with a black hole. Our aim is to determine how the quadrupole and octupole moments affect the nature of the motion of a test particle, moving in the close vicinity of the black hole. The different types of trajectories for the test particle are mainly classified as bounded, collisional, and escaping, by using modern color-coded basin diagrams. Moreover, an additional analysis is carried out for distinguishing between the different types of bounded motion (regular, sticky, and chaotic). Our results strongly indicate that the multipole moments, along with the total orbital energy, highly affect the final state of the test particle, while at the same time the basin geometry of the phase space tends to be highly dominated by collision and escape orbits.

Fractal basins of convergence of a seventh-order generalized Hénon-Heiles potential

This article aims to investigate the points of equilibrium and the associated convergence basins in a seventh-order generalized Hénon-Heiles potential. Using the well-known Newton-Raphson iterator we numerically locate the position of the points of equilibrium, while we also obtain their linear stability. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the two variable parameters, entering the generalized Hénon-Heiles potential, affect the convergence dynamics of the system as well as the fractal degree of the basin diagrams. The fractal degree is derived by computing the (boundary) basin entropy as well as the uncertainty dimension.

On the dynamics of a seventh-order generalized Hénon-Heiles potential

This paper deals with the derivation and analysis of a seventh-order generalization of the Hénon-Heiles potential. The new potential has axial and reflection symmetries, and finite escape energy with three channels of escape. Based on SALI indicator and exits basins, the dynamic behavior of the seventh-order system is investigated qualitatively in cases of bounded and unbounded movement. Moreover, a quantitative analysis is carried out through the percentage of chaotic orbits and the basin entropy, respectively. After classifying large sets of initial conditions of orbits for several values of the energy constant in both regimes, we observe that when the energy moves away from the critical value, the chaoticity of the system decreases and the basin structure becomes simpler with sharper and well defined bounds. Our results suggest that when the seventh-order contributions of the potential are taken into account, the system becomes less ergodic in comparison with the classical version of the Hénon-Heiles system.

Orbital dynamics in the photogravitational restricted four-body problem: Lagrange configuration

We study the effect of the radiation parameter in the location, stability and orbital dynamics in the Lagrange configuration of the restricted four-body problem when one of the primaries is a radiating body. The equations of motion for the test particle are derived by assuming that the primaries revolve in the same plane with uniform angular velocity, and regardless of their mass distribution, they will always lie at the vertices of an equilateral triangle. The insertion of the radiation factor in the restricted four-body problem, let us model more realistically the dynamics of a test particle orbiting an astrophysical system with an active star. The dynamical mechanisms responsible for the smoothening on the basin structures of the configuration space is related to the decrease in the total number of fixed points with increasing values of the radiation parameter. In our model of the Sun-Jupiter-Trojan Asteroid system, it is found that despite the repulsive character of the solar radiation pressure, there exist two stable libration points roughly located at the position of L4 and L5 in the Sun-Jupiter system.

Orbital dynamics in realistic galaxy models: NGC 3726, NGC 3877 and NGC 4010

In the present paper, using a generalization of the Miyamoto and Nagai potential we adjusted the observed rotation curves of three specific spiral galaxies to the analytical circular velocities. The observational data have been taken from a 21 cm-line synthesis imaging survey using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, for three particular galaxies in the Ursa Major cluster: NGC 3726, NGC 3877 and NGC 4010. Accordingly, the dynamics of the system is analyzed in terms of the Poincaré sections method, finding that for larger values of the angular momentum of the test particle or lower values its total energy the dynamics is mainly regular, while on the opposite cases, the dynamics is mainly chaotic. Our toy model opens the possibility to find chaotic bounded orbits for stars in those particular galaxies.

Geodesic dynamics in Chazy-Curzon spacetimes

In the last decades, the dynamical studies around compact objects became a subject of active research, partially motivated by the observed differences in the profiles of the gravitational waves depending on the dynamics of the system. In this work, via the Poincaré section method, we conduct a thorough numerical analysis of the dynamical behavior of geodesics around Chazy-Curzon metrics. As the main result, we find only regular motions for the geodesics in all cases, which suggest the existence of the so-called Carter's constant in this kind of exact solutions. Moreover, our simulations indicate that in the two-particle Chazy-Curzon solution, some oscillatory motions take place as in the classical MacMillan problem.

Equilibrium points and basins of convergence in the triangular restricted four-body problem with a radiating body

The dynamics of the four-body problem have attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this paper, we extend the basic equilateral four-body problem by introducing the effect of radiation pressure, Poynting-Robertson drag, and solar wind drag. In our setup, three primaries lay at the vertices of an equilateral triangle and move in circular orbits around their common center of mass. Here, one of the primaries is a radiating body and the fourth body (whose mass is negligible) does not affect the motion of the primaries. We show that the existence and the number of equilibrium points of the problem depend on the mass parameters and radiation factor. Consequently, the allowed regions of motion, the regions of the basins of convergence for the equilibrium points, and the basin entropy will also depend on these parameters. The present dynamical model is analyzed for three combinations of mass for the primaries: equal masses, two equal masses, different masses. As the main results, we find that in all cases the libration points are unstable if the radiation factor is larger than 0.01 and hence able to destroy the stability of the libration points in the restricted four-body problem composed by Sun, Jupiter, Trojan asteroid and a test (dust) particle. Also, we conclude that the number of fixed points decreases with the increase of the radiation factor.

Basins of convergence of equilibrium points in the generalized Henon-Heiles system

We numerically explore the Newton-Raphson basins of convergence, related to the libration points (which act as attractors of the convergence process), in the generalized Hénon-Heiles system (GHH). The evolution of the position as well as of the linear stability of the equilibrium points is determined, as a function of the value of the perturbation parameter. The attracting regions, on the configuration $(x,y)$ plane, are revealed by using the multivariate version of the classical Newton-Raphson iterative algorithm. We perform a systematic investigation in an attempt to understand how the perturbation parameter affects the geometry as well as of the basin entropy of the attracting domains. The convergence regions are also related with the required number of iterations.

Orbital dynamics in the post-Newtonian planar circular Sun-Jupiter system

The theory of the post-Newtonian (PN) planar circular restricted three-body problem is used for numerically investigating the orbital dynamics of a test particle (e.g., a comet, asteroid, meteor or spacecraft) in the planar Sun-Jupiter system with a scattering region around Jupiter. For determining the orbital properties of the test particle, we classify large sets of initial conditions of orbits for several values of the Jacobi constant in all possible Hill region configurations. The initial conditions are classified into three main categories: (i) bounded, (ii) escaping and (iii) collisional. Using the smaller alignment index chaos indicator (SALI), we further classify bounded orbits into regular, sticky or chaotic. In order to get a spherical view of the dynamics of the system, the grids of the initial conditions of the orbits are defined on different types of two-dimensional planes. We locate the different types of basins and we also relate them with the corresponding spatial distributions of the escape and collision time. Our thorough analysis exposes the high complexity of the orbital dynamics and exhibits an appreciable difference between the final states of the orbits in the classical and PN approaches. Furthermore, our numerical results reveal a strong dependence of the properties of the considered basins with the Jacobi constant, along with a remarkable presence of fractal basin boundaries. Our outcomes are compared with earlier ones, regarding other planetary systems.

Dynamical analysis of bounded and unbounded orbits in a generalized Hénon-Heiles system

The Hénon-Heiles potential was first proposed as a simplified version of the gravitational potential experimented by a star in the presence of a galactic center. Currently, this system is considered a paradigm in dynamical systems because despite its simplicity exhibits a very complex dynamical behavior. In the present paper, we perform a series expansion up to the fifth-order of a potential with axial and reflection symmetries, which after some transformations, leads to a generalized Hénon-Heiles potential. Such new system is analyzed qualitatively in both regimes of bounded and unbounded motion via the Poincaré sections method and plotting the exit basins. On the other hand, the quantitative analysis is performed through the Lyapunov exponents and the basin entropy, respectively. We find that in both regimes the chaoticity of the system decreases as long as the test particle energy gets far from the critical energy. Additionally, we may conclude that despite the inclusion of higher order terms in the series expansion, the new system shows wider zones of regularity (islands) than the ones present in the Hénon-Heiles system.

On the conservation of the Jacobi integral in the post-Newtonian circular restricted three-body problem

In the present paper, using the first-order approximation of the $n$-body Lagrangian (derived on the basis of the post-Newtonian gravitational theory of Einstein, Infeld, and Hoffman), we explicitly write down the equations of motion for the planar circular restricted three-body problem. Additionally, with some simplified assumptions, we obtain two formulas for estimating the values of the mass/distance and velocity/speed of light ratios appropriate for a given post-Newtonian approximation. We show that the formulas derived in the present study, lead to a good numerical conservation of the Jacobi constant and allow for an approximate equivalence between the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian approaches at the same post-Newtonian order. Accordingly, the dynamics of the system is analyzed in terms of the Poincaré sections method and Lyapunov exponents, finding that for specific values of the Jacobi constant the dynamics can be either chaotic or regular. Our results suggest that the chaoticity of the post-Newtonian system is slightly in- creased in comparison with its Newtonian counterpart.

On the Influence of the Mass Definition in the Stability of Axisymmetric Relativistic Thin Disks

The study on the stability of relativistic disks is one of the most important criteria for the characterization of astrophysically relevant galactic or accretion disks models. In this paper, we perform an analysis of the stability of static axisymmetric relativistic thin disks, by introducing a first-order perturbation into the energy-momentum tensor of the fluid. The formalism is applied to three particular models built with the aid of the displace-cut-reflect (DCR) method, and previously considered in literature (Ujevic and Letelier, 2004), but modifying the mass criteria, i.e., using the Komar mass instead of the total surface mass. Under this conditions, it is found that the total mass values are independent of the parameters of the DCR-method, which let us choose the boundary condition for the cutoff radius, such that it takes the maximum value that allows an appreciable and well-behaved perturbation on the disk. As a general result, we found that the Komar mass is more appropriate to define the cutoff radius.

Pseudo-Newtonian planar circular restricted 3-body problem

We study the dynamics of the planar circular restricted three-body problem in the context of a pseudo-Newtonian approximation. By using the Fodor-Hoenselaers-Perjés procedure, we perform an expansion in the mass potential of a static massive spherical source up to the first non-Newtonian term, giving place to a gravitational potential that includes first-order general relativistic effects. With this result, we model a system composed by two pseudo-Newtonian primaries describing circular orbits around their common center of mass, and a test particle orbiting the system in the equatorial plane. The dynamics of the new system of equations is studied in terms of the Poincaré section method and the Lyapunov exponents, where the introduction of a new parameter $ε$, allows us to observe the transition from the Newtonian to the pseudo-Newtonian regime. We show that when the Jacobian constant is fixed, a chaotic orbit in the Newtonian regime can be either chaotic or regular in the pseudo-Newtonian approach. As a general result, we find that most of the pseudo-Newtonian configurations are less stable than their Newtonian equivalent.

Geodesic motion in a stationary dihole spacetime

The knowledge of the properties of the different exact solutions modeling binary systems, is a necessary step towards the classification of physically suitable solutions and its corresponding limits of applicability. In the present paper, we perform an analysis of the geodesics around two counter--rotating Kerr--Newman black holes endowed with opposite electric charges, which achieve equilibrium by means of a strut between their constituents. We find that bounded and unbounded orbits are possible. However, test particles may cross between the black holes only if their angular momentum equals zero, otherwise, there exist a repulsive potential, which prohibits such orbits. Two important aspects are pointed out for these trajectories: ({\it i}) the motion of photons is affected once crossing the strut; and ({\it ii}) massive particles exhibit oscillatory motion, as a first analog of the Sitnikov problem in general relativity. The radius of the innermost stable circular orbit as a function of the physical parameters of the black holes is also investigated.

Classical and quantum chaotic angular-momentum pumps

We study directed transport of charge and intrinsic angular momentum by periodically driven scattering in the regime of fast and strong driving. A spin-orbit coupling through a kicked magnetic field confined to a compact region in space leads to irregular scattering and triggers spin flips in a spatially asymmetric manner which allows to generate polarized currents. The dynamical mechanisms responsible for the spin separation carry over to the quantum level and give rise to spin pumping. Our theory, based on the Floquet formalism, is confirmed by numerical solutions of the time-dependent inhomogeneous Schrödinger equation with a continuous source term.

Optimal conditions for the numerical calculation of the largest Lyapunov exponent for systems of ordinary differential equations

A general indicator of the presence of chaos in a dynamical system is the largest Lyapunov exponent. This quantity provides a measure of the mean exponential rate of divergence of nearby orbits. In this paper, we show that the so-called two-particle method introduced by Benettin et al. could lead to spurious estimations of the largest Lyapunov exponent. As a comparator method, the maximum Lyapunov exponent is computed from the solution of the variational equations of the system. We show that the incorrect estimation of the largest Lyapunov exponent is based on the setting of the renormalization time and the initial distance between trajectories. Unlike previously published works, we here present three criteria that could help to determine correctly these parameters so that the maximum Lyapunov exponent is close to the expected value. The results have been tested with four well known dynamical systems: Ueda, Duffing, Rössler and Lorenz.

The influence of the Lande $g$-factor in the classical general relativistic description of atomic and subatomic systems

We study the electromagnetic and gravitational fields of the proton and electron in terms of the Einstenian gravity via the introduction of an arbitrary Lande $g$-factor in the Kerr-Newman solution. We show that at length scales of the order of the reduced Compton wavelength, corrections from different values of the $g$-factor are not negligible and discuss the presence of general relativistic effects in highly ionized heavy atoms. On the other hand, since at the Compton-wavelength scale the gravitational field becomes spin dominated rather than mass dominated, we also point out the necessity of including angular momentum as a source of corrections to Newtonian gravity in the quantum description of gravity at this scale.
