On the generality of the Cohen and Glashow constraints on the neutrino velocity

We discuss the kinematic limits for the process ν_μ\rightarrow ν_μ+ e^+ + e^- in the assumption that neutrinos are superluminal. We derive our results by assuming that: i) it exists one reference frame in which energy and momentum are conserved; ii) the Hamilton-Jacobi equation v=dE/dp is valid; iii) the present experimental information on the neutrino velocity at different energies are correct. We show that the considered process cannot be avoided unless very peculiar neutrino dispersion laws are assumed.

A step toward CNO solar neutrinos detection in liquid scintillators

The detection of CNO solar neutrinos in ultrapure liquid scintillator detectors is limited by the background produced by Bismuth-210 nuclei that undergo beta-decay to Polonium-210 with a lifetime equal to about 7 days. Polonium-210 nuclei are unstable and decay with a lifetime equal to about 200 days emitting alpha particles that can be also detected. In this letter, we show that the Bi-210 background can be determined by looking at the time evolution of alpha-decay rate of Po-210, provided that alpha particle detection efficiency is stable over the data acquisition period and external sources of Po-210 are negligible. A sufficient accuracy can be obtained in a relatively short time. As an example, if the initial Po-210 event rate is 2000 cpd/100 ton or lower, a Borexino-like detector could start discerning CNO neutrino signal from Bi-210 background in about 1 yr.

Constraints on the opacity profile of the sun from helioseismic observables and solar neutrino flux measurements

Motivated by the solar composition problem and by using the recently developed Linear Solar Model approach, we analyze the role of opacity and metals in the sun. After a brief discussion of the relation between the effects produced by a variation of composition and those produced by a modification of the radiative opacity, we calculate numerically the opacity kernels that, in a linear approximation, relate an arbitrary opacity variation to the corresponding modification of the solar observable properties. We use these opacity kernels to discuss the present constraints on opacity (and composition) provided by helioseismic and solar neutrino data.

Linear Solar Models

We present a new approach to study the properties of the sun. We consider small variations of the physical and chemical properties of the sun with respect to Standard Solar Model predictions and we linearize the structure equations to relate them to the properties of the solar plasma. By assuming that the (variation of) the present solar composition can be estimated from the (variation of) the nuclear reaction rates and elemental diffusion efficiency in the present sun, we obtain a linear system of ordinary differential equations which can be used to calculate the response of the sun to an arbitrary modification of the input parameters (opacity, cross sections, etc.). This new approach is intended to be a complement to the traditional methods for solar model calculation and allows to investigate in a more efficient and transparent way the role of parameters and assumptions in solar model construction. We verify that these Linear Solar Models recover the predictions of the traditional solar models with an high level of accuracy.

The likelihood for supernova neutrino analyses

We derive the event-by-event likelihood that allows to extract the complete information contained in the energy, time and direction of supernova neutrinos, and specify it in the case of SN1987A data. We resolve discrepancies in the previous literature, numerically relevant already in the concrete case of SN1987A data.

How precisely neutrino emission from supernova remnants can be constrained by gamma ray observations?

We propose a conceptually and computationally simple method to evaluate the neutrinos emitted by supernova remnants using the observed gamma-ray spectrum. The proposed method does not require any preliminary parametrization of the gamma ray flux; the gamma ray data can be used as an input. In this way, we are able to propagate easily the observational errors and to understand how well the neutrino flux and the signal in neutrino telescopes can be constrained by gamma-ray data. We discuss the various possible sources of theoretical and systematical uncertainties (e.g., neutrino oscillation parameters, hadronic modeling, etc.), obtaining an estimate of the accuracy of our calculation. Furthermore, we apply our approach to the supernova remnant RX J1713.7-3946, showing that neutrino emission is very-well constrained by the H.E.S.S. gamma-ray data: indeed, the accuracy of our prediction is limited by theoretical uncertainties. Neutrinos from RX J1713.7-3946 can be detected with an exposure of the order km^2 year, provided that the detection threshold in future neutrino telescopes will be equal to about 1 TeV.

Method to extract the primary cosmic ray spectrum from very high energy gamma-ray data and its application to SNR RX J1713.7-3946

Supernova remnants are likely to be the accelerators of the galactic cosmic rays. Assuming the correctness of this hypothesis, we develop a method to extract the parent cosmic ray spectrum from the VHE gamma ray flux emitted by supernova remnants (and other gamma transparent sources). Namely, we calculate semi-analytically the (inverse) operator which relates an arbitrary gamma ray flux to the parent cosmic ray spectrum, without relying on any theoretical assumption about the shape of the cosmic ray and/or photon spectrum. We illustrate the use of this technique by applying it to the young SNR RX J1713.7-3946 which has been observed by H.E.S.S. experiment during the last three years. Specific implementations of the method permit to use as an input either the parameterized VHE gamma ray flux or directly the raw data. The possibility to detect features in the cosmic rays spectrum and the error in the determination of the parent cosmic ray spectrum are also discussed.

How to observe 8B solar neutrinos in liquid scintillator detectors

We show that liquid organic scintillator detectors (e.g., KamLAND and Borexino) can measure the 8B solar neutrino flux by means of the nu_e charged current interaction with the 13C nuclei naturally contained in the scintillators. The neutrino events can be identified by exploiting the time and space coincidence with the subsequent decay of the produced 13N nuclei. We perform a detailed analysis of the background in KamLAND, Borexino and in a possible liquid scintillator detector at SNOLab, showing that the 8B solar neutrino signal can be extracted with a reasonable uncertainty in a few years of data taking. KamLAND should be able to extract about 18 solar neutrino events from the already collected data. Prospects for gigantic scintillator detectors (such as LENA) are also studied.

The response of primordial abundances to a general modification of $G_{\rm N}$ and/or of the early universe expansion rate

We discuss the effects of a possible time variation of the Newton constant $G_{\rm N}$ on light elements production in Big Bang Nucleosyntesis (BBN). We provide analytical estimates for the dependence of primordial abundances on the value of the Newton constant during BBN. The accuracy of these estimates is then tested by numerical methods. % Moreover, we determine numerically the response of each element to an arbitrary time-dependent modification of the early universe expansion rate. Finally, we determine the bounds on possible variations of $G_{\rm N}$ which can be obtained from the comparison of theoretical predictions and observational data.

Faraday Rotation of the Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization and Primordial Magnetic Field Properties

Measurements of the Faraday rotation of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) polarization could provide evidence for the existence of primordial magnetic fields. The Faraday rotation could also allow the study of some properties of these fields. In this paper, we calculate the angular dependence of the Faraday rotation correlator for different assumptions about the spectral index and correlation length of the magnetic field. We show that the helical part of the magnetic field does not make any contribution to the correlator. We stress the importance of the angular resolution of the detector in the Faraday rotation measure, showing that it could severely reduce the effect, even for a relatively large magnetic field correlation length.

The $^{14}N(p, γ)^{15}O$ reaction, solar neutrinos and the age of the globular clusters

We discuss implications of a new measurement of $^{14}N(p, γ)^{15}O$ concerning solar neutrinos, solar models and globular cluster dating. Predictions for the gallium and chlorine experiments are reduced by 2 and 0.1 SNU respectively. Predictions for helioseismic observables are unchanged within uncertainties. The age of globular clusters as deduced from the Turn-Off luminosity is increased by about 0.7 Gyr.

Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and neutrinos

We present a brief review of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). We discuss theoretical and observational uncertainties in deuterium and helium-4 primordial abundances and their implications for the determination of important cosmological parameters. We present, moreover, some recent results on active-sterile neutrino oscillations in the early universe and on their effects on BBN.

BBN bounds on active-sterile neutrino mixing

Nucleosynthesis restrictions on mixing of active neutrinos with possible sterile ones are obtained with the account of experimentally determined mixing between all active neutrinos. The earlier derived bounds, valid in the absence of active-active mixing, are reanalyzed and significant difference is found in the resonance case. The results are obtained both analytically and numerically by solution of complete system of integro-differential kinetic equations. A good agreement between analytical and numerical approaches is demonstrated. A role of possibly large cosmological lepton asymmetry is discussed.

Fusion rate enhancement due to energy spread of colliding nuclei

Experimental results for sub-barrier nuclear fusion reactions show cross section enhancements with respect to bare nuclei which are generally larger than those expected according to electron screening calculations. We point out that energy spread of target or projectile nuclei is a mechanism which generally provides fusion enhancement. We present a general formula for calculating the enhancement factor and we provide quantitative estimate for effects due to thermal motion, vibrations inside atomic, molecular or crystal system, and due to finite beam energy width. All these effects are marginal at the energies which are presently measurable, however they have to be considered in future experiments at still lower energies. This study allows to exclude several effects as possible explanation of the observed anomalous fusion enhancements, which remain a mistery.

Does Solar Physics Provide Constraints to Weakly Interacting Massive Particles?

We investigate whether present data on helioseismology and solar neutrino fluxes may constrain WIMP--matter interactions in the range of WIMP parameters under current exploration in WIMP searches. We find that, for a WIMP mass of 30 GeV, once the effect of the presence of WIMPs in the Sun's interior is maximized, the squared isothermal sound speed is modified, with respect to the standard solar model, by at most 0.4% at the Sun's center. The maximal effect on the Boron-8 solar neutrino flux is a reduction of 4.5%. Larger masses lead to smaller effects. These results imply that present sensitivities in the measurements of solar properties, though greatly improved in recent years, do not provide information or constraints on WIMP properties of relevance for dark matter. Furthermore, we show that, when current bounds from direct WIMP searches are taken into account, the effect induced by WIMPs with dominant coherent interactions are drastically reduced as compared to the values quoted above. The case of neutralinos in the minimal supersymmetric standard model is also discussed.

The Sun and the Newton Constant

Several properties of the solar interior are determined with a very high accuracy, which in some cases is comparable to that achieved in the determination of the Newton constant $G_N$. We find that the present uncertainty $ΔG_N/G_N=\pm 1.5\cdot 10^{-3}$ has significant effects on the profile of density and pressure, however it has negligible influence on the solar properties which can be measured by means of helioseismology and $^8{\rm B}$ neutrinos. Our result do not support recent claims that observational solar data can be used to determine the value of $G_N$ with an accuracy of few part in $10^{-4}$. Present data cannot constrain $G_N$ to much better than $10^{-2}$.
