Ensemble inequivalence in systems with long-range interactions

Ensemble inequivalence has been observed in several systems. In particular it has been recently shown that negative specific heat can arise in the microcanonical ensemble in the thermodynamic limit for systems with long-range interactions. We display a connection between such behaviour and a mean-field like structure of the partition function. Since short-range models cannot display this kind of behaviour, this strongly suggests that such systems are necessarily non-mean field in the sense indicated here. We illustrate our results showing an application to the Blume-Emery-Griffiths model. We further show that a broad class of systems with non-integrable interactions are indeed of mean-field type in the sense specified, so that they are expected to display ensemble inequivalence as well as the peculiar behaviour described above in the microcanonical ensemble.

A Diffusion Model for Classical Chaotic Compound Scattering

We consider the classical map proposed previously to be the exact classical analogue of Rydberg Molecules calculated with the approximations relevant to the multi-channel quantum defect theory. The resulting classical map is analyzed at energies above the threshold for the Rydberg electron. At energies very near to this threshold we find the possibility of bounded motion for positive energy due to conserved tori as well as the possibility of forming a compound system, i.e. a system where the particle is trapped for long times before emerging again to the continuum. The compound scattering displays unusual features for short time behavior. A diffusion model explains these features.

Observation of coupled normal heat and matter transport in a simple model system

We introduce the first simple mechanical system that shows fully realistic transport behavior while still being exactly solvable at the level of equilibrium statistical mechanics. The system under consideration is a Lorentz gas with fixed freely-rotating circular scatterers which scatter point particles via perfectly rough collisions. Upon imposing either a temperature gradient and/or a chemical potential gradient, a stationary state is attained for which local thermal equilibrium holds. Transport in this system is normal, in the sense that the transport coefficients which characterize the flow of heat and matter are finite in the thermodynamic limit. Moreover, the two flows are non-trivially coupled, satisfying Onsager's reciprocity relations to within numerical accuracy.

Connectivity of Growing Random Networks

A solution for the time- and age-dependent connectivity distribution of a growing random network is presented. The network is built by adding sites which link to earlier sites with a probability A_k which depends on the number of pre-existing links k to that site. For homogeneous connection kernels, A_k ~ k^gamma, different behaviors arise for gamma<1, gamma>1, and gamma=1. For gamma<1, the number of sites with k links, N_k, varies as stretched exponential. For gamma>1, a single site connects to nearly all other sites. In the borderline case A_k ~ k, the power law N_k ~k^{-nu} is found, where the exponent nu can be tuned to any value in the range 2<nu<infinity.

A Finite Element Algorithm for High-Lying Eigenvalues and Eigenfunctions with Homogeneous Neumann and Dirichlet Boundary Conditions

We present a finite element algorithm that computes eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator for two-dimensional problems with homogeneous Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions or combinations of either for different parts of the boundary. In order to solve the generalized eigenvalue problem, we use an inverse power plus Gauss-Seidel algorithm. For Neumann boundary conditions the method is much more efficient than the equivalent finite difference algorithm. We have cheked the algorithm comparing the cumulative level density of the espectrum obtained numerically, with the theoretical prediction given by the Weyl formula. A systematic deviation was found. This deviation is due to the discretisation and not to the algorithm. As an application we calculate the statistical properties of the eigenvalues of the acoustic Bunimovich stadium and compare them with the theoretical results given by random matrix theory.

Multichannel Quantum Defect Theory: a Quantum Poincare Map

The multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT) can be reinterpreted as a quantum Poincare map in representation of angular momentum. This has two important implications: we have a paradigm of a true quantum Poincare map without semi-classical input and we get an entirely new insight into the significance of MQDT.

Structural Invariance and the Energy Spectrum

We extend the application of the concept of structural invariance to bounded time independent systems. This concept, previously introduced by two of us to argue that the connection between random matrix theory and quantum systems with a chaotic classical counterpart is in fact largely exact in the semiclassical limit, is extended to the energy spectra of bounded time independent systems. We proceed by showing that the results obtained previously for the quasi-energies and eigenphases of the S-matrix can be extended to the eigenphases of the quantum Poincare map which is unitary in the semiclassical limit. We then show that its eigenphases in the chaotic case move rather stiffly around the unit circle and thus their local statistical fluctuations transfer to the energy spectrum via Bogomolny's prescription. We verify our results by studying numerically the properties of the eigenphases of the quantum Poincare map for billiards by using the boundary integral method.

Intruder States and their Local Effect on Spectral Statistics

The effect on spectral statistics and on the revival probability of intruder states in a random background is analysed numerically and with perturbative methods. For random coupling the intruder does not affect the GOE spectral statistics of the background significantly, while a constant coupling causes very strong correlations at short range with a fourth power dependence of the spectral two-point function at the origin. The revival probability is significantly depressed for constant coupling as compared to random coupling.

Structural Invariance: A Link Between Chaos and Random Matrices

The concept of structural invariance previously introduced by the authors is used to argue that the connection between random matrix theory and quantum systems with a chaotic classical counterpart is in fact largely exact in the semiclassical limit, holding for all correlation functions and all energy ranges. This goes considerably further than the usual results obtained through periodic orbit theory. These results hold for eigenvalues of bounded time-independent systems as well as for eigenphases of periodically kicked systems and scattering systems.

The Level Splitting Distribution in Chaos-assisted Tunneling

A compound tunneling mechanism from one integrable region to another mediated by a delocalized state in an intermediate chaotic region of phase space was recently introduced to explain peculiar features of tunneling in certain two-dimensional systems. This mechanism is known as chaos-assisted tunneling. We study its consequences for the distribution of the level splittings and obtain a general analytical form for this distribution under the assumption that chaos assisted tunneling is the only operative mechanism. %The validity of this form can then in %principle be checked either numerically or even experimentally. We have checked that the analytical form we obtain agrees with splitting distributions calculated numerically for a model system in which chaos-assisted tunneling is known to be the dominant mechanism. The distribution depends on two parameters: The first gives the scale of the splittings and is related to the magnitude of the classically forbidden processes, the second gives a measure of the efficiency of possible barriers to classical transport which may exist in the chaotic region. If these are weak, this latter parameter is irrelevant; otherwise it sets an energy scale at which the splitting distribution crosses over from one type of behavior to another. The detailed form of the crossover is also obtained and found to be in good agreement with numerical results for models for chaos-assisted tunneling.

Distribution of Eigenvalues for the Modular Group

The two-point correlation function of energy levels for free motion on the modular domain, both with periodic and Dirichlet boundary conditions, are explicitly computed using a generalization of the Hardy-Littlewood method. It is shown that ion the limit of small separations they show an uncorrelated behaviour and agree with the Poisson distribution but they have prominent number-theoretical oscillations at larger scale. The results agree well with numerical simulations.

Ballistic Annihilation Kinetics: The Case of Discrete Velocity Distributions

The kinetics of the annihilation process, $A+A\to 0$, with ballistic particle motion is investigated when the distribution of particle velocities is {\it discrete}. This discreteness is the source of many intriguing phenomena. In the mean field limit, the densities of different velocity species decay in time with different power law rates for many initial conditions. For a one-dimensional symmetric system containing particles with velocity 0 and $\pm 1$, there is a particular initial state for which the concentrations of all three species as decay as $t^{-2/3}$. For the case of a fast ``impurity'' in a symmetric background of $+$ and $-$ particles, the impurity survival probability decays as $\exp(-{\rm const.}\times \ln^2t)$. In a symmetric 4-velocity system in which there are particles with velocities $\pm v_1$ and $\pm v_2$, there again is a special initial condition where the two species decay at the same rate, $t^{-\a}$, with $\a\cong 0.72$. Efficient algorithms are introduced to perform the large-scale simulations necessary to observe these unusual phenomena clearly.
