Anomalous Localization in Low-Dimensional Systems with Correlated Disorder

This review presents a unified view on the problem of Anderson localization in one-dimensional weakly disordered systems with short-range and long-range statistical correlations in random potentials. The following models are analyzed: the models with continuous potentials, the tight-binding models of the Anderson type, and various Kronig-Penney models with different types of perturbations. Main attention is payed to the methods of obtaining the localization length in dependence on the controlling parameters of the models. Specific interest is in an emergence of effective mobility edges due to certain long-range correlations in a disorder. The predictions of the theoretical and numerical analysis are compared to recent experiments on microwave transmission through randomly filled waveguides.

Anderson Localization in Metamaterials with Compositional Disorder

The localization length has been derived for one-dimensional bi-layered structures with random perturbations in the refractive indices for each type of layers. Main attention is paid to the comparison between conventional materials and those consisting of mixed right-hand and left-hand materials. It is shown that the localization length is described by the universal expression for both cases. The analytical results are confirmed by numerical simulations.

Microwave realization of quasi one-dimensional systems with correlated disorder

A microwave setup for mode-resolved transport measurement in quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) structures is presented. We will demonstrate a technique for direct measurement of the Green's function of the system. With its help we will investigate quasi-1D structures with various types of disorder. We will focus on stratified structures, i.e., structures that are homogeneous perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. In this case the interaction between different channels is absent, so wave propagation occurs individually in each open channel. We will apply analytical results developed in the theory of one-dimensional (1D) disordered models in order to explain main features of the quasi-1D transport. The main focus will be selective transport due to long-range correlations in the disorder. In our setup, we can intentionally introduce correlations by changing the positions of periodically spaced brass bars of finite thickness. Because of the equivalence of the stationary Schrödinger equation and the Helmholtz equation, the result can be directly applied to selective electron transport in nanowires, nanostripes, and superlattices.

Ballistic, diffusive, and localized transport in surface-disordered systems: Two-mode waveguide

This paper presents an analytical study of the coexistence of different transport regimes in quasi-one-dimensional surface-disordered waveguides (or electron conductors). To elucidate main features of surface scattering, the case of two open modes (channels) is considered in great detail. Main attention is paid to the transmission in dependence on various parameters of the model with two types of rough-surface profiles (symmetric and antisymmetric). It is shown that depending on the symmetry, basic mechanisms of scattering can be either enhanced or suppressed. As a consequence, different transport regimes can be realized. Specifically, in the waveguide with symmetric rough boundaries, there are ballistic, localized and coexistence transport regimes. In the waveguide with antisymmetric roughness of lateral walls, another regime of the diffusive transport can arise. Our study allows to reveal the role of the so-called square-gradient scattering which is typically neglected in literature, however, can give a strong impact to the transmission.

Distribution of Resonance Widths and Dynamics of Continuum Coupling

We analyze the statistics of resonance widths in a many-body Fermi system with open decay channels. Depending on the strength of continuum coupling, such a system reveals growing deviations from the standard chi-square (Porter-Thomas) width distribution. The deviations emerge from the process of increasing interaction of intrinsic states through common decay channels; in the limit of perfect coupling this process leads to the super-radiance phase transition. The width distribution depends also on the intrinsic dynamics (chaotic vs regular). The results presented here are important for understanding the recent experimental data concerning the width distribution for neutron resonances in nuclei.

Anomalous localisation in the aperiodic Kronig-Penney model

We analyse the anomalous properties of specific electronic states in the Kronig-Penney model with weak compositional and structural disorder. Using the Hamiltonian map approach, we show that the localisation length of the electronic states exhibits a resonant effect close to the band centre and anomalous scaling at the band edges. These anomalies are akin to the corresponding ones found in the Anderson model with diagonal disorder. We also discuss how specific cross-correlations between compositional and structural disorder can generate an anomalously localised state near the middle of the energy band. The tails of this state decay with the same stretched-exponential law which characterises the band-centre state in the Anderson model with purely off-diagonal disorder.

Anomalous thermal properties of a harmonic chain with correlated isotopic disorder

We analyse the thermal properties of a harmonic chain with weak correlated disorder. With the use of a perturbative approach we derive analytical expressions for the time-evolution of the chain temperature and of the heat flow when both ends of the chain are coupled to heat baths. Our analytical and numerical results demonstrate that specific long-range correlations of the isotopic disorder can suppress or enhance the vibrational modes in pre-defined frequency windows. In this way one can arrange a frequency-selective heat flow through disordered chains.

Electronic states and transport properties in the Kronig-Penney model with correlated compositional and structural disorder

We study the structure of the electronic states and the transport properties of a Kronig-Penney model with weak compositional and structural disorder. Using a perturbative approach we obtain an analytical expression for the localisation length which is valid for disorder with arbitrary correlations. We show how to generate disorder with self- and cross-correlations and we analyse both the known delocalisation effects of the long-range self-correlations and new effects produced by cross-correlations. We finally discuss how both kinds of correlations alter the transport properties in Kronig-Penney models of finite size.

Inhomogeneous DNA: conducting exons and insulating introns

Parts of DNA sequences known as exons and introns play very different role in coding and storage of genetic information. Here we show that their conducting properties are also very different. Taking into account long-range correlations among four basic nucleotides that form double-stranded DNA sequence, we calculate electron localization length for exon and intron regions. Analyzing different DNA molecules, we obtain that the exons have narrow bands of extended states, unlike the introns where all the states are well localized. The band of extended states is due to a specific form of the binary correlation function of the sequence of basic DNA nucleotides.

Internal chaos in an open quantum system: From Ericson to conductance fluctuations

The model of an open Fermi-system is used for studying the interplay of intrinsic chaos and irreversible decay into open continuum channels. Two versions of the model are characterized by one-body chaos coming from disorder or by many-body chaos due to the inter-particle interactions. The continuum coupling is described by the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Our main interest is in specific correlations of cross sections for various channels in dependence on the coupling strength and degree of internal chaos. The results are generic and refer to common features of various mesoscopic objects including conductance fluctuations and resonance nuclear reactions.

One-Dimensional Kronig-Penney Model with Positional Disorder: Theory versus Experiment

We study the effects of random positional disorder in the transmission of waves in a 1D Kronig-Penny model. For weak disorder we derive an analytical expression for the localization length and relate it to the transmission coefficient for finite samples. The obtained results describe very well the experimental frequency dependence of the transmission in a microwave realization of the model. Our results can be applied both to photonic crystals and semiconductor super lattices.

Localization in Correlated Bi-Layer Structures: From Photonic Cristals to Metamaterials and Electron Superlattices

In a unified approach, we study the transport properties of periodic-on-average bi-layered photonic crystals, metamaterials and electron superlattices. Our consideration is based on the analytical expression for the localization length derived for the case of weakly fluctuating widths of layers, that also takes into account possible correlations in disorder. We analyze how the correlations lead to anomalous properties of transport. In particular, we show that for quarter stack layered media specific correlations can result in a $ω^2$-dependence of the Lyapunov exponent in all spectral bands.

Enhancement of localization in one-dimensional random potentials with long-range correlations

We experimentally study the effect of enhancement of localization in weak one-dimensional random potentials. Our experimental setup is a single mode waveguide with 100 tuneable scatterers periodically inserted into the waveguide. By measuring the amplitudes of transmitted and reflected waves in the spacing between each pair of scatterers, we observe a strong decrease of the localization length when white-noise scatterers are replaced by a correlated arrangement of scatterers.

Continuum shell model: From Ericson to conductance fluctuations

We discuss an approach for studying the properties of mesoscopic systems, where discrete and continuum parts of the spectrum are equally important. The approach can be applied (i) to stable heavy nuclei and complex atoms near the continuum threshold, (ii) to nuclei far from the region of nuclear stability, both of the regions being of great current interest, and (iii) to mesoscopic devices with interacting electrons. The goal is to develop a new consistent version of the continuum shell model that simultaneously takes into account strong interaction between fermions and coupling to the continuum. Main attention is paid to the formation of compound resonances, their statistical properties, and correlations of the cross sections. We study the Ericson fluctuations of overlapping resonances and show that the continuum shell model nicely describes universal properties of the conductance fluctuations.

Anomalous properties of the Kronig-Penney model with compositional and structural disorder

We study the localization properties of the eigenstates in the Kronig-Penney model with weak compositional and structural disorder. The main result is an expression for the localization length that is valid for any kind of self- and inter-correlations of the two types of disorder. We show that the interplay between compositional and structural disorder can result in anomalous localization.

Signum Function Method for Generation of Correlated Dichotomic Chains

We analyze the signum-generation method for creating random dichotomic sequences with prescribed correlation properties. The method is based on a binary mapping of the convolution of continuous random numbers with some function originated from the Fourier transform of a binary correlator. The goal of our study is to reveal conditions under which one can construct binary sequences with a given pair correlator. Our results can be used in the construction of superlattices and waveguides with selective transport properties.
