Stability of negative and positive trions in quantum wires

Binding energies of negative ($X^-$) and positive trions ($X^+$) in quantum wires are studied for strong quantum confinement of carriers which results in a numerical exactly solvable model. The relative electron and hole localization has a strong effect on the stability of trions. For equal hole and electron confinement, $X^+$ is more stable but a small imbalance of the particle localization towards a stronger hole localization e.g. due to its larger effective mass, leads to the interchange of $X^-$ and $X^+$ recombination lines in the photoluminescent spectrum as was recently observed experimentally. In case of larger $X^-$ stability, a magnetic field oriented parallel to the wire axis leads to a stronger increase of the $X^+$ binding energy resulting in a crossing of the $X^+$ and $X^-$ lines.

Beating of the oscillations in the transport coefficients of a one-dimensionally periodically modulated two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of spin-orbit interaction

Transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) are studied in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field $B$, of a {\it weak} one-dimensional (1D) periodic potential modulation, and of the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) described only by the Rashba term. In the absence of the modulation the SOI mixes the spin-up and spin-down states of neighboring Landau levels into two new, unequally spaced energy branches. The levels of these branches broaden into bands in the presence of the modulation and their bandwidths oscillate with the field $B$. Evaluated at the Fermi energy, the $n$-th level bandwidth of each series has a minimum or vanishes at different values of the field $B$. In contrast with the 1D-modulated 2DEG without SOI, for which only one flat-band condition applies, here there are two flat-band conditions that can change considerably as a function of the SOI strength $α$ and accordingly influence the transport coefficients of the 2DEG. The phase and amplitude of the Weiss and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations depend on the strength $α$. For small values of $α$ both oscillations show beating patterns. Those of the former are due to the independently oscillating bandwidths whereas those of the latter are due to modifications of the density of states, exhibit an even-odd filling factor transition, and are nearly independent of the modulation strength. For strong values of $α$ the SdH oscillations are split in two.

Experimental Evidence for Giant Vortex States in a Mesoscopic Superconducting Disk

Response of a mesoscopic superconducting disk to perpendicular magnetic fields is studied by using the multiple-small-tunnel-junction method, in which transport properties of several small tunnel junctions attached to the disk are measured simultaneously. This allows us for the first experimental distinction between the giant vortex states and multivortex states. Moreover, we experimentally find magnetic field induced rearrangement and combination of vortices. The experimental results are well reproduced in numerical results based on the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory.

Normal modes of a quasi-one-dimensional multi-chain complex plasma

We studied equally charged particles, suspended in a complex plasma, which move in a plane and interact with a screened Coulomb potential (Yukawa type) and with an additional external confining parabolic potential in one direction, that makes the system quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D). The normal modes of the system are studied in the presence of dissipation. We also investigated how a perpendicular magnetic field couples the phonon modes with each other. Two different ways of exciting the normal modes are discussed: 1) a uniform excitation of the Q1D lattice, and 2) a local forced excitation of the system in which one particle is driven by e.g. a laser. Our results are in very good agreement with recent experimental findings on a finite single chain system (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 91}, 255003 (2003)). Predictions are made for the normal modes of multi-chain structures in the presence of damping.

Exact broken-symmetry states and Hartree-Fock solutions for quantum dots at high magnetic fields

Wigner molecules formed at high magnetic fields in circular and elliptic quantum dots are studied by exact diagonalization (ED) and unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) methods with multicenter basis of displaced lowest Landau level wave functions. The broken symmetry states with semi-classical charge density constructed from superpositions of the ED solutions are compared to the UHF results. UHF overlooks the dependence of the few-electron wave function on the actual relative positions of electrons localized in different charge puddles and partially compensates for this neglect by an exaggerated separation of charge islands which are more strongly localized than in the exact broken-symmetry states.

Power-law dependence of the angular momentum transition fields in few-electron quantum dots

We show that the critical magnetic fields at which a few-electron quantum dot undergoes transitions between successive values of its angular momentum (M), for large M values follow a very simple power-law dependence on the effective inter-electron interaction strength. We obtain this power law analytically from a quasi-classical treatment and demonstrate its nearly-universal validity by comparison with the results of exact diagonalization.

Currents in a many-particle parabolic quantum dot under a strong magnetic field

Currents in a few-electron parabolic quantum dot placed into a perpendicular magnetic field are considered. We show that traditional ways of investigating the Wigner crystallization by studying the charge density correlation function can be supplemented by the examination of the density-current correlator. However, care must be exercised when constructing the correct projection of the multi-dimensional wave function space. The interplay between the magnetic field and Euler-liquid-like behavior of the electron liquid gives rise to persistent and local currents in quantum dots. We demonstrate these phenomena by collating a quasi-classical theory valid in high magnetic fields and an exact numerical solution of the many-body problem.

Spin-dependent transmission through a chain of rings: influence of a periodically modulated spin-orbit interaction strength or ring radius

We study ballistic electron transport through a finite chain of quantum circular rings in the presence of spin-orbit interaction of strength α. For a single ring the transmission and reflection coefficients are obtained analytically and from them the conductance for a chain of rings as a function of αand of the wave vector k of the incident electron. We show that due to destructive spin interferences the chain can be totaly opaque for certain ranges of k the width of which depends on the value of α. A periodic modulation of the strength αor of the ring radius widens up the gaps considerably and produces a nearly binary conductance output.

Spin-dependent (magneto)transport through a ring due to spin-orbit interaction

Electron transport through a one-dimensional ring connected with two external leads, in the presence of spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of strength αand a perpendicular magnetic field is studied. Applying Griffith's boundary conditions we derive analytic expressions for the reflection and transmission coefficients of the corresponding one-electron scattering problem. We generalize earlier conductance results by Nitta et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 75, 695 (1999)] and investigate the influence of α, temperature, and a weak magnetic field on the conductance. Varying αand temperature changes the position of the minima and maxima of the magnetic-field dependent conductance, and it may even convert a maximum into a minimum and vice versa.

From vortex molecules to the Abrikosov lattice in thin mesoscopic superconducting disks

Stable vortex states are studied in large superconducting thin disks (for numerical purposes we considered with radius R = 50 ξ). Configurations containing more than 700 vortices were obtained using two different approaches: the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory and the London approximation. To obtain better agreement with results from the GL theory we generalized the London theory by including the spatial variation of the order parameter following Clem's ansatz. We find that configurations calculated in the London limit are also stable within the Ginzburg-Landau theory for up to ~ 230 vortices. For large values of the vorticity (typically, L > 100), the vortices are arranged in an Abrikosov lattice in the center of the disk, which is surrounded by at least two circular shells of vortices. A Voronoi construction is used to identify the defects present in the ground state vortex configurations. Such defects cluster near the edge of the disk, but for large L also grain boundaries are found which extend up to the center of the disk.

Electron spin and charge switching in a coupled quantum dot quantum ring system

Few-electron systems confined in a quantum dot laterally coupled to a surrounding quantum ring in the presence of an external magnetic field are studied by exact diagonalization. The distribution of electrons between the dot and the ring is influenced by the relative strength of the dot and ring confinement, the gate voltage and the magnetic field which induces transitions of electrons between the two parts of the system. These transitions are accompanied by changes in the periodicity of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations of the ground-state angular momentum. The singlet-triplet splitting for a two electron system with one electron confined in the dot and the other in the ring exhibits piecewise linear dependence on the external field due to the Aharonov-Bohm effect for the ring-confined electron, in contrast to smooth oscillatory dependence of the exchange energy for laterally coupled dots in the side-by-side geometry.

Spintronic single qubit gate based on a quantum ring with spin-orbit interaction

In a quantum ring connected with two external leads the spin properties of an incoming electron are modified by the spin-orbit interaction resulting in a transformation of the qubit state carried by the spin. The ring acts as a one qubit spintronic quantum gate whose properties can be varied by tuning the Rashba parameter of the spin-orbit interaction, by changing the relative position of the junctions, as well as by the size of the ring. We show that a large class of unitary transformations can be attained with already one ring -- or a few rings in series -- including the important cases of the Z, X, and Hadamard gates. By choosing appropriate parameters the spin transformations can be made unitary, which corresponds to lossless gates.

Spatial ordering of charge and spin in quasi one-dimensional Wigner molecules

ew-electron systems confined in quasi one-dimensional quantum dots are studied by the configuration interaction approach. We consider the parity symmetry of states forming Wigner molecules in large quantum dots and find that for the spin-polarized Wigner molecules it strictly depends on the number of electrons. We investigate the spatial spin-ordering in the inner coordinates of the quantum system and conclude that for small dots it has a short-range character and results mainly from the Pauli exclusion principle while the Wigner crystallization in large dots is accompanied by spin ordering over the entire length of the dot.

Re-entrant pinning of Wigner molecules in a magnetic field due to a Coulomb impurity

Pinning of magnetic-field induced Wigner molecules (WMs) confined in parabolic two-dimensional quantum dots by a charged defect is studied by an exact diagonalization approach. We found a re-entrant pinning of the WMs as function of the magnetic field, a magnetic field induced re-orientation of the WMs and a qualitatively different pinning behaviour in the presence of a positive and negative Coulomb impurity.

Correlation between electrons and vortices in quantum dots

Exact many-body wave functions for quantum dots containing up to four interacting electrons are computed and we investigated the distribution of the wave function nodes, also called vortices. For this purpose, we evaluate the reduced wave function by fixing the positions of all but one electron and determine the locations of its zeros. We find that the zeros are strongly correlated with respect to each other and with respect to the position of the electrons and formulate rules describing their distribution. No multiple zeros are found, i.e. vortices with vorticity larger than one. Our exact calculations are compared to results extracted from the recently proposed rotating electron molecule (REM) wave functions.

Long-range nonlocal flow of vortices in narrow superconducting channels

We report a new nonlocal effect in vortex matter, where an electric current confined to a small region of a long and sufficiently narrow superconducting wire causes vortex flow at distances hundreds of inter-vortex separations away. The observed remote traffic of vortices is attributed to a very efficient transfer of a local strain through the one-dimensional vortex lattice, even in the presence of disorder. We also observe mesoscopic fluctuations in the nonlocal vortex flow, which arise due to "traffic jams" when vortex arrangements do not match a local geometry of a superconducting channel.

Influence of well width fluctuations on the binding energy of excitons, charged excitons and biexcitons in GaAs-based quantum wells

We present a first-principle path integral Monte-Carlo (PIMC) study of the binding energy of excitons, trions (positively and negatively charged excitons) and biexcitons bound to single-island interface defects in quasi-two-dimensional GaAs/Al$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$As quantum wells. We discuss in detail the dependence of the binding energy on the size of the well width fluctuations and on the quantum-well width. The numerical results for the well width dependence of the exciton, trions and biexciton binding energy are in good quantitative agreement with the available experimental data.

Inverse flux quantum periodicity of magnetoresistance oscillations in two-dimensional short-period surface superlattices

Transport properties of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) are considered in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field $B$ and of a {\it weak} two-dimensional (2D) periodic potential modulation in the 2DEG plane. The symmetry of the latter is rectangular or hexagonal. The well-known solution of the corresponding tight-binding equation shows that each Landau level splits into several subbands when a rational number of flux quanta $h/e$ pierces the unit cell and that the corresponding gaps are exponentially small. Assuming the latter are closed due to disorder gives analytical wave functions and simplifies considerably the evaluation of the magnetoresistivity tensor $ρ_{μν}$. The relative phase of the oscillations in $ρ_{xx}$ and $ρ_{yy}$ depends on the modulation periods involved. For a 2D modulation with a {\bf short} period $\leq 100$ nm, in addition to the Weiss oscillations the collisional contribution to the conductivity and consequently the tensor $ρ_{μν}$ show {\it prominent peaks when one flux quantum $h/e$ passes through an integral number of unit cells} in good agreement with recent experiments. For periods $300- 400$ nm long used in early experiments, these peaks occur at fields 10-25 times smaller than those of the Weiss oscillations and are not resolved.
