Magneto-exciton in planar type II quantum dots

We study an exciton in a type II quantum dot, where the electron is confined in the dot, but the hole is located in the barrier material. The exciton properties are studied as a function of a perpendicular magnetic field using a Hartree-fock mesh calculation. Our model system consists of a planar quantum disk. Angular momentum (l) transitions are predicted with increasing magnetic field. We also study the transition from a type I to a type II quantum dot which is induced by changing the confinement potential of the hole. For sufficiently large magnetic fields a re-entrant behaviour is found from $l_{h}=0$ to $l_{h}\neq 0$ and back to $l_{h}=0$, which results in a transition from type II to type I.

Spin-engineered quantum dots

Spatially nonhomogeneously spin polarized nuclei are proposed as a new mechanism to monitor electron states in a nanostructure, or as a means to createn and, if necessary, reshape such nanostructures in the course of the experiment. We found that a polarization of nulear spins may lift the spin polarization of the electron states in a nanostructure and, if sufficiently strong, leads to a polarization of the electron spins. Polarized nuclear spins may form an energy landscape capable of binding electrons with energy up to several meV and the localization radius $ >$ 100Å.

Oscillating magnetoresistance in diluted magnetic semiconductor barrier structures

Ballistic spin polarized transport through diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) single and double barrier structures is investigated theoretically using a two-component model. The tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) of the system exhibits oscillating behavior when the magnetic field are varied. An interesting beat pattern in the TMR and spin polarization is found for different NMS/DMS double barrier structures which arises from an interplay between the spin-up and spin-down electron channels which are splitted by the s-d exchange interaction.

Longitudinal spin transport in diluted magnetic semiconductor superlattices: the effect of the giant Zeeman splitting

Longitudinal spin transport in diluted magnetic semiconductor superlattices is investigated theoretically. The longitudinal magnetoconductivity (MC) in such systems exhibits an oscillating behavior as function of an external magnetic field. In the weak magnetic field region the giant Zeeman splitting plays a dominant role which leads to a large negative magnetoconductivity. In the strong magnetic field region the MC exhibits deep dips with increasing magnetic field. The oscillating behavior is attributed to the interplay between the discrete Landau levels and the Fermi surface. The decrease of the MC at low magnetic field is caused by the $s-d$ exchange interaction between the electron in the conduction band and the magnetic ions.

Dependence of the vortex configuration on the geometry of mesoscopic flat samples

The influence of the geometry of a thin superconducting sample on the penetration of the magnetic field lines and the arrangement of vortices are investigated theoretically. We compare superconducting disks, squares and triangles with the same surface area having nonzero thickness. The coupled nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equations are solved self-consistently and the important demagnetization effects are taken into account. We calculate and compare quantities like the free energy, the magnetization, the Cooper-pair density, the magnetic field distribution and the superconducting current density for the three geometries. For given vorticity the vortex lattice is different for the three geometries, i.e. it tries to adapt to the geometry of the sample. This also influences the stability range of the different vortex states. For certain magnetic field ranges we found a coexistence of a giant vortex placed in the center and single vortices toward the corners of the sample. Also the H-T phase diagram is obtained.

Superconducting properties of mesoscopic cylinders with enhanced surface superconductivity

The superconducting state of an infinitely long superconducting cylinder surrounded by a medium which enhances its superconductivity near the boundary is studied within the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. This enhancement can be due to the proximity of another superconductor or due to surface treatment. Quantities like the free energy, the magnetization and the Cooper-pair density are calculated. Phase diagrams are obtained to investigate how the critical field and the critical temperature depend on this surface enhancement for different values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ. Increasing the superconductivity near the surface leads to higher critical fields and critical temperatures. For small cylinder diameters only giant vortex states nucleate, while for larger cylinders multivortices can nucleate. The stability of these multivortex states also depends on the surface enhancement. For type-I superconductors we found the remarkable result that for a range of values of the surface extrapolation length the superconductor can transit from the Meissner state into superconducting states with vorticity L > 1. Such a behaviour is not found for the case of large κ, i.e. type-II superconductivity.

Transition Between Ground State and Metastable States in Classical 2D Atoms

Structural and static properties of a classical two-dimensional (2D) system consisting of a finite number of charged particles which are laterally confined by a parabolic potential are investigated by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and the Newton optimization technique. This system is the classical analog of the well-known quantum dot problem. The energies and configurations of the ground and all metastable states are obtained. In order to investigate the barriers and the transitions between the ground and all metastable states we first locate the saddle points between them, then by walking downhill from the saddle point to the different minima, we find the path in configurational space from the ground state to the metastable states, from which the geometric properties of the energy landscape are obtained. The sensitivity of the ground-state configuration on the functional form of the inter-particle interaction and on the confinement potential is also investigated.

Electron scattering on circular symmetric magnetic profiles in a two-dimensional electron gas

The quasi-bound and scattered states in a 2DEG subjected to a circular symmetric steplike magnetic profile with zero average magnetic field are studied. We calculate the effect of a random distribution of such identical profiles on the transport properties of a 2DEG. We show that a nonzero Hall resistance can be obtained, although $ =0$, and that in some cases it can even change sign as function of the Fermi energy or the magnetic field strength. The Hall and magnetoresistance show pronounced resonances apart from the Landau states of the inner core, corresponding to the so-called quasi-bound snake orbit states.

Free carrier effects in gallium nitride epilayers: the valence band dispersion

The dispersion of the A-valence-band in GaN has been deduced from the observation of high-index magneto-excitonic states in polarised interband magneto-reflectivity and is found to be strongly non-parabolic with a mass in the range 1.2-1.8 m_{e}. It matches the theory of Kim et al. [Phys. Rev. B 56, 7363 (1997)] extremely well, which also gives a strong k-dependent A-valence-band mass. A strong phonon coupling leads to quenching of the observed transitions at an LO-phonon energy above the band gap and a strong non-parabolicity. The valence band was deduced from subtracting from the reduced dispersion the electron contribution with a model that includes a full treatment of the electron-phonon interaction.

Positively charged magneto-excitons in a semiconductor quantum well

A variational calculation of the lower singlet and triplet states of positively charged excitons (trions) confined to a single quantum well and in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field is presented. We study the dependence of the energy levels and of the binding energy on the well width and on the magnetic field strength. Our results are compared with the available experimental data and show a good qualitative and quantitative agreement. A singlet-triplet crossing is found which for a 200 Åwide GaAs is predicted to occur for B = 15 T.

Polaron effects in electron channels on a helium film

Using the Feynman path-integral formalism we study the polaron effects in quantum wires above a liquid helium film. The electron interacts with two-dimensional (2D) surface phonons, i.e. ripplons, and is confined in one dimension (1D) by an harmonic potential. The obtained results are valid for arbitrary temperature ($T$), electron-phonon coupling strength ($α$), and lateral confinement ($ω_{0}$). Analytical and numerical results are obtained for limiting cases of $T$, $α$, and $ω_{0}$. We found the surprising result that reducing the electron motion from 2D to quasi-1D makes the self-trapping transition more continuous.

Exciton trapping in magnetic wire structures

The lateral magnetic confinement of quasi two-dimensional excitons into wire like structures is studied. Spin effects are take into account and two different magnetic field profiles are considered, which experimentally can be created by the deposition of a ferromagnetic stripe on a semiconductor quantum well with magnetization parallel or perpendicular to the grown direction of the well. We find that it is possible to confine excitons into one-dimensional (1D) traps. We show that the dependence of the confinement energy on the exciton wave vector, which is related to its free direction of motion along the wire direction, is very small. Through the application of a background magnetic field it is possible to move the position of the trapping region towards the edge of the ferromagnetic stripe or even underneath the stripe. The exact position of this 1D exciton channel depends on the strength of the background magnetic field and on the magnetic polarisation direction of the ferromagnetic film.

Non-homogeneous magnetic field induced magnetic edge states and their transport in a quantum wire

The spectrum of magnetic edge states and their transport properties in the presence of a perpendicular non-homogeneous magnetic field in a quantum wire formed by a parabolic confining potential are obtained. Systems are studied where the magnetic field exhibits a discontinuous jump in the transverse direction and changes its sign, strength, and both sign and strength at the magnetic interface. The energy spectra and wave functions of these systems, the corresponding group velocities along the interface and the particle average positions normal to the interface are calculated. The resistance of the quantum wire in the presence of such a magnetic interface is obtained both in the ballistic and the diffusive regimes as a function of the Fermi energy and of the homogeneous background magnetic field. The results are compared with those for the case of a homogeneous field.

Vortex charge in mesoscopic superconductors

The electric charge density in mesoscopic superconductors with circular symmetry, i.e. disks and cylinders, is studied within the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau approach. We found that even in the Meissner state there is a charge redistribution in the sample which makes the sample edge become negatively charged. In the vortex state there is a competition between this Meissner charge and the vortex charge which may change the polarity of the charge at the sample edge with increasing magnetic field. It is shown analytically that in spite of the charge redistribution the mesoscopic sample as a whole remains electrically neutral.

An effective lowest Landau level treatment of demagnetization in superconducting mesoscopic disks

Demagnetization, which is inherently present in the magnetic response of small finite-size superconductors, can be accounted for by an effective $κ$ within a two-dimensional lowest Landau level approximation of the Ginzburg-Landau functional. We show this by comparing the equilibrium magnetization of superconducting mesoscopic disks obtained from the numerical solution of the three-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau equations with that obtained in the ``effective'' LLL approximation.

Magnetic field dependence of the energy of negatively charged excitons in semiconductor quantum wells

A variational calculation of the spin-singlet and spin-triplet state of a negatively charged exciton (trion) confined to a single quantum well and in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field is presented. We calculated the probability density and the pair correlation function of the singlet and triplet trion states. The dependence of the energy levels and of the binding energy on the well width and on the magnetic field strength was investigated. We compared our results with the available experimental data on GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells and find that in the low magnetic field region (B<18 T) the observed transition are those of the singlet and the dark triplet trion (with angular momentum $L_z=-1$), while for high magnetic fields (B>25 T) the dark trion becomes optically inactive and possibly a transition to a bright triplet trion (angular momentum $L_z=0$) state is observed.

Excitons and charged excitons in semiconductor quantum wells

A variational calculation of the ground-state energy of neutral excitons and of positively and negatively charged excitons (trions) confined in a single-quantum well is presented. We study the dependence of the correlation energy and of the binding energy on the well width and on the hole mass. The conditional probability distribution for positively and negatively charged excitons is obtained, providing information on the correlation and the charge distribution in the system. A comparison is made with available experimental data on trion binding energies in GaAs-, ZnSe-, and CdTe-based quantum well structures, which indicates that trions become localized with decreasing quantum well width.
