A possible disk mechanism for the 23d QPO in Mkn~501

Optically thin two-temperature accretion flows may be thermally and viscously stable, but acoustically unstable. Here we propose that the O-mode instability of a cooling-dominated optically thin two-temperature inner disk may explain the 23-day quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) period observed in the TeV and X-ray light curves of Mkn~501 during its 1997 high state. In our model the relativistic jet electrons Compton upscatter the disk soft X-ray photons to TeV energies, so that the instability-driven X-ray periodicity will lead to a corresponding quasi-periodicity in the TeV light curve and produce correlated variability. We analyse the dependence of the instability-driven quasi-periodicity on the mass (M) of the central black hole, the accretion rate ($\rm{\dot{M}}$) and the viscous parameter ($α$) of the inner disk. We show that in the case of Mkn~501 the first two parameters are constrained by various observational results, so that for the instability occurring within a two-temperature disk where $α=0.05-1.0$, the quasi-period is expected to lie within the range of 8 to 100 days, as indeed the case. In particular, for the observed 23-day QPO period our model implies a viscosity coefficient $α\leq 0.28$, a sub-Eddington accretion rate $\dot{M} \simeq 0.02 \dot{M}_{\rm Edd}$ and a transition radius to the outer standard disk of $r_0 \sim 60 r_g$, and predicts a period variation $δP/P \sim 0.23$ due to the motion of the instability region.

Particle acceleration efficiencies in astrophysical shear flows

The acceleration of energetic particles in astrophysical shear flows is analyzed. We show that in the presence of a non-relativistic gradual velocity shear, power law particle momentum distributions $f(p) \propto p^{-(3+α)}$ may be generated, assuming a momentum-dependent scattering time $τ\propto p^α$, with $α> 0$. We consider possible acceleration sites in astrophysical jets and study the conditions for efficient acceleration. It is shown, for example, that in the presence of a gradual shear flow and a gyro-dependent particle mean free path, synchrotron radiation losses no longer stop the acceleration once it has started to work efficiently. This suggests that shear acceleration may naturally account for a second, non-thermal population of energetic particles in addition to a shock-accelerated one. The possible relevance of shear acceleration is briefly discussed with reference to the relativistic jet in the quasar 3C 273.

On the central black hole mass in Mkn~501

We analyse the apparent disagreement between the mass estimates of the central black hole(s) in Mkn~501 based on (i) the observations of the host galaxy, (ii) the high energy (HE) emission mechanism, and (iii) the modulation of the beamed radiation by a black hole (BH) binary system. While method (i) seems to imply a central mass > 5\times 10^8 M_{sun}, method (ii) suggests a BH mass less than 6 \times 10^7 M_{sun}. We critically discuss the estimates inferred from (i) showing that current uncertainties may permit a central mass as low as ~(2-3)\times 10^8 M_{sun}. We demonstrate that in this case the estimates (i) and (ii) might be brought into agreement by assuming a binary BH system where the jet dominating the HE emission originates from the less massive (secondary) BH as suggested by method (iii). On the other hand, if Mkn~501 has in fact a high central BH mass of order 10^9 M_{sun}, a change of fundamental assumptions seems to be required in the context of several HE emission models. We show, that in this case a binary scenario following (iii) may be still possible if the jet which dominates the emission emerges from the more massive (primary) BH and if the binary evolution passes through phases of super-Eddington accretion and/or decreased conversion efficiency.

Particle acceleration in rotating and shearing jets from AGN

We model the acceleration of energetic particles due to shear and centrifugal effects in rotating astrophysical jets. The appropriate equation describing the diffusive transport of energetic particles in a collisionless, rotating background flow is derived and analytical steady state solutions are discussed. In particular, by considering velocity profiles from rigid, over flat to Keplerian rotation, the effects of centrifugal and shear acceleration of particles scattered by magnetic inhomogeneities are distinguished. In the case where shear acceleration dominates, it is confirmed that power law particle momentum solutions $f(p) \propto p^{-(3+α)}$ exist, if the mean scattering time $τ_c \propto p^α$ is an increasing function of momentum. We show that for a more complex interplay between shear and centrifugal acceleration, the recovered power law momentum spectra might be significantly steeper but flatten with increasing azimuthal velocity due to the increasing centrifugal effects. The possible relevance of shear and centrifugal acceleration for the observed extended emission in AGN is demonstrated for the case of the jet in the quasar 3C273.

Implications of a possible 23 day periodicity for binary black hole models in Mkn~501

We investigate the implications of a massive binary system in the centre of the gamma-ray blazar Mkn~501 and show that the periodical behaviour recently observed in the TeV and X-ray lightcurves may possibly be related to the orbital motion of the relativistic jet emerging from the less massive black hole. For the special relativistic jet properties inferred from emission models, we derive an intrinsic orbital period of $(6-14)$ yrs and a centre-of-mass distance of $(2.0-3.5) \times 10^{16}$ cm. If the binary is very close with a separation of the order of that for which gravitational radiation becomes dominant, we find a maximum primary mass of $\sim 10^8 M_{\sun}$ and a corresponding secondary mass in the range of $\sim (4-42)\times 10^6 M_{\sun}$ depending on the intrinsic jet properties. Such values are in line with the black hole masses expected from merger scenarios.

A possible black hole binary in Mkn 501

A simple binary model for Mkn~501 is considered under the assumption that the TeV and X-ray periodicity of $\sim 23$ days, observed during the flaring state in 1997, may be basically interpreted as a doppler-shifted flux modulation due to the orbital motion of the relativistic jet. For the typical jet properties inferred from emission models, we find an intrinsic orbital period of $(6-14)$ yrs and a centre-of-mass distance of $(2-3.5) \times 10^{16}$ cm, the binary thus being a very close system. If the binary separation corresponds to that at which gravitational radiation becomes dominant, one may obtain a maximum allowed primary mass of $\sim 10^8 M_{\odot}$ and a corresponding maximum allowed secondary mass in the range of $\sim (1-9)\times 10^7 M_{\odot}$ assuming that gas accretion occurs on around the salpeter time scale. Interestingly such values agree with the black hole masses expected from merger scenarios.

Test particle acceleration by rotating jet magnetospheres

Centrifugal acceleration of charged test particles at the base of a rotating jet magnetosphere is considered. Based on an analysis of forces we derive the equation for the radial accelerated motion and present an analytical solution. It is shown that for particles moving outwards along rotating magnetic field lines, the energy gain is in particular limited by the breakdown of the bead-on-the-wire approximation which occurs in the vicinity of the light cylinder $r_{L}$. The corresponding upper limit for the maximum Lorentz factor $γ_{max}$ for electrons scales $\propto B^{2/3} r_{L}^{2/3}$, with $B$ the magnetic field strength at $r_{L}$, and is at most of the order of a $10^2-10^3$ for the conditions regarded to be typical for BL Lac objects. Such values suggest that this mechanism may provide pre-accelerated seed particles which are required for efficient Fermi-type particle acceleration at larger scales in radio jets.

On the nonthermal X-ray emission in blazar jets

We consider particle acceleration to high energy via diffusive shock acceleration in a simple, self-consistent shock in jet model for blazars. Electrons are assumed to be accelerated at a shock front in relativistic jets and radiate synchrotron emission in a post-shock region. The full time, space and momentum dependence of the electron distribution function is used for a calculation of the nonthermal synchrotron spectra. We discuss the evolution of the spectral index by varying the rate at which particles enter the acceleration process. The results indicate that the synchrotron spectral index displays a characteristic looplike behaviour with intensity (as has been observed in several blazars), where the orientation of the loop depends on whether the acceleration time scale is comparable to the synchrotron cooling time scale or not. We show that our model provides a good fit to the observed evolution of the spectral index of Mkn 421 during a flare in 1994.

Particle acceleration by rotating magnetospheres in active galactic nuclei

We consider the centrifugal acceleration of charged test particles by rotating magnetospheres which are widely believed to be responsible for the relativistic jet phenomenon in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Based on an analysis of forces the equation for the radial accelerated motion is derived and an analytical solution presented under the assumption of an idealized spherical magnetosphere. We show that the rotational energy gain of charged particles moving outwards along rotating magnetic field lines is limited in general by (i) inverse-Compton losses in the radiation field of the disk in which the magnetosphere is anchored and (ii) the breakdown of the bead-on-the-wire approximation which occurs in the vicinity of the light cylinder. The corresponding maximum Lorentz factor for electrons is of the order of a few hundred for the sub-Eddington conditions regarded to be typical for BL Lacs. In AGN with enhanced accretion rate the acceleration mechanism seems to be almost inefficient due to increasing inverse-Compton losses.

Particle acceleration and synchrotron emission in blazar jets

We model the acceleration of electrons at a shock front in a relativistic blazar jet and compute the radiation they emit in a post-shock region which contains a homogeneous magnetic field. The full space, time and momentum dependence of the electron distribution is used in this calculation. It is shown that the "homogeneous" synchrotron model is recovered, provided the downstream speed of the plasma away from the shock front is nonrelativistic, and provided that the light travel times across the face of the shock front is unimportant. By varying the rate at which particles are picked up by the acceleration process, we calculate the time-dependence of the spectra. Since the magnetic field strength is assumed constant within the emission region, each frequency band can be identified with electrons of a particular energy. We find that for a band in which the electrons are accelerated rapidly compared to the rate at which they cool, the spectra typically harden during phases of rising flux, and soften during phases of falling flux, as has been observed in the objects PKS 2155-304 and Mkn 421. However, in a frequency band in which the timescales are comparable, the reverse behaviour is to be expected. We discuss the extent to which observations of both the stationary spectrum and the spectral variability of the synchrotron component of blazar emission can be used to constrain the model.
