First detailed study of two eccentric eclipsing binaries: TYC 5378-1590-1 and TYC 8378-252-1

Aims: The analysis of combined photometry and spectroscopy of eccentric eclipsing binary systems facilitates the derivation of precise values for the parameters of the component stars and their orbits, thereby providing stringent tests of theories of stellar structure and evolution. In this paper two eccentric eclipsing binary systems, TYC 5378-1590-1 and TYC 8378-252-1, are studied in detail for the first time. Methods: Radial velocities were obtained using cross-correlation methods applied to mid-resolution spectra covering almost the entire orbital phase domains of these two systems. TESS photometry was used for the analysis of TYC 5378-1590-1, whereas ASAS-SN photometry was used for the analysis of TYC 8378-252-1. Results: We obtained the first precise derivation of the physical parameters of these systems. Both systems display moderately eccentric orbits (e = 0.3 and 0.2) with periods of 3.7323 and 2.8776 days, respectively. The apsidal motion is very slow, with a duration of several centuries. We present two models for the apsidal motion of TYC 5378-1590-1. The internal structure constant derived from observations for TYC 8378-252-1 is approximately 11% lower than theoretical predictions. We discuss possible reasons for this discrepancy. Our analysis indicates that the components of both systems are on the main sequence. The components of TYC 5378-1590-1 are relatively young stars (age 600 Myr) close to the ZAMS, whereas the components of TYC 8378-252-1 are relatively old stars (age 4 Gyr) close to the TAMS. Our finding that the circularization timescale for TYC 5378-1590-1 is 200 times longer than its evolutionary age is compatible with theory; however, our the evolutionary age of TYC 8378-252-1 is approximately ten times longer than the circulation age, while its orbital eccentricity is quite high (e= 0.2), challenges the present theories of circularization.

Light-curves of symbiotic stars in massive photometric surveys I: D-type systems

ASAS, MACHO, OGLE and SAAO JHKL light curves of 13 stars, that have at some time been classified as D-type symbiotics, are analysed. Most of the near-IR light-curves that have been monitored over many years show long-term changes due to variable dust obscuration, in addition to the stellar pulsation. The distances to these objects are derived from the period-luminosity relation and estimates of the mass-loss rates made from the Ko-[12] colour. We reclassify AS 245 as an S-type symbiotic, with a semi-regular cool component with a pulsation period of about one year. The periods of the large amplitude pulsations of SS73 38 (463 days), AS 210 (423 days) and H2-38 (395 days) are estimated for the first time, confirming that they are symbiotic Miras. A comparison of the symbiotic Miras with normal Miras of similar pulsation period shows that the symbiotic stars have on average higher values of Ko-[12]. This may indicate that they have higher mass-loss rates, or more likely that the dust which is being lost by the Mira is trapped within the binary system.

HST and VLT observations of the Symbiotic Star Hen 2-147

We investigate the dynamics of the nebula around the symbiotic star Hen 2-147, determine its expansion parallax, and compare it with the distance obtained via the Period-Luminosity relation for its Mira variable. The geometry of the nebula is found to be that of a knotty annulus of ionized gas inclined to the plane of sky and expanding with a velocity of ~90 km/s. A straightforward application of the expansion parallax method provides a distance of 1.5+-0.4 kpc, which is a factor of two lower than the distance of 3.0+-0.4 kpc obtained from the Period-Luminosity relationship for the Mira (which has a pulsation period of 373 days). The discrepancy is removed if, instead of expanding matter, we are observing the expansion of a shock front in the plane of the sky. This shock interpretation is further supported by the broadening of the nebular emission lines.

On the nature of the cool component of MWC 560

MWC 560 (V694 Mon) is one of the most enigmatic symbiotic system with a very active accretion-powered hot component. Such activity can be supported only by a luminous asymptotic giant branch star, i.e. a Mira or SR variable, with a high mass-loss rate. It is also a very unusual jet source because the jet axis lies practically parallel to the line of sight. The aims of our study are the determination of the evolutionary status of the cool component of MWC 560. Our methods involve analysis of near-IR JHKL and optical light curves. The cool component of MWC 560 pulsates with a period of ~340 days, and it is probably a red SR variable on the thermally pulsing AGB. The high mass-loss rate expected for such a star is sufficient to power the observed activity of the hot companion.

First science with SALT: peering at the accreting polar caps of the eclipsing polar SDSS J015543.40+002807.2

We describe briefly the properties of the recently completed Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), along with its first light imager SALTICAM. Using this instrument, we present 4.3 hr of high speed unfiltered photometric observations of the eclipsing polar SDSSJ015543.40+002807.2 with time resolution as short as 112 ms, the highest quality observations of this kind of any polar to date. The system was observed during its high luminosity state. Two accreting poles are clearly seen in the eclipse light curve. The binary system parameters have been constrained: the white dwarf mass is at the low end of the range expected for cataclysmic variables. Correlations between the positions of the accretion regions on or near the surface of the white dwarf and the binary system parameters were established. The sizes of the accretion regions and their relative movement from eclipse to eclipse were estimated: they are typically 4-7 deg depending on the mass of the white dwarf. The potential of these observations will only fully be realised when low state data of the same kind are obtained and the contact phases of the eclipse of the white dwarf are measured.

Properties of the $δ$ Scorpii Circumstellar Disk from Continuum Modeling

We present optical $WBVR$ and infrared $JHKL$ photometric observations of the Be binary system $δ$ Sco, obtained in 2000--2005, mid-infrared (10 and $18 μ$m) photometry and optical ($λλ$ 3200--10500 Å) spectropolarimetry obtained in 2001. Our optical photometry confirms the results of much more frequent visual monitoring of $δ$ Sco. In 2005, we detected a significant decrease in the object's brightness, both in optical and near-infrared brightness, which is associated with a continuous rise in the hydrogen line strenghts. We discuss possible causes for this phenomenon, which is difficult to explain in view of current models of Be star disks. The 2001 spectral energy distribution and polarization are succesfully modeled with a three-dimensional non-LTE Monte Carlo code which produces a self-consistent determination of the hydrogen level populations, electron temperature, and gas density for hot star disks. Our disk model is hydrostatically supported in the vertical direction and radially controlled by viscosity. Such a disk model has, essentially, only two free parameters, viz., the equatorial mass loss rate and the disk outer radius. We find that the primary companion is surrounded by a small (7 $R_\star$), geometrically-thin disk, which is highly non-isothermal and fully ionized. Our model requires an average equatorial mass loss rate of $1.5\times 10^{-9} M_{\sun}$ yr$^{-1}$.

The effect of dust obscuration in RR Tel on optical and IR long-term photometry and Fe II emission lines

Infrared and optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the symbiotic nova RR Tel are used to study the effects and properties of dust in symbiotic binaries containing a cool Mira component, as well as showing "obscuration events" of increased absorption, which are typical for such Miras. A set of photometric observations of the symbiotic nova RR Tel in different wavelength bands - visual from 1949 to 2002 and near-infrared (JHKL) from 1975 to 2002 - are presented. The variability due to the normal Mira pulsation was removed from the JHKL data, which were then compared with the AAVSO visual light curve. The changes of the Fe II emission line fluxes during the 1996-2000 obscuration episode were studied in the optical spectra taken with the Anglo-Australian telescope. We discuss the three periods during which the Mira component was heavily obscured by dust as observed in the different wavelength bands. A change in the correlations of J with other infrared magnitudes was observed with the colour becoming redder after JD2446000. Generally, J-K was comparable, while K-L was larger than typical values for single Miras. A distance estimate of 2.5 kpc, based on the IR data, is given. A larger flux decrease for the permitted than for the forbidden Fe II lines, during the obscuration episode studied, has been found. There is no evidence for other correlations with line properties, in particular with wavelength, which suggests obscuration due to separate optically thick clouds in the outer layers.

Properties of galactic B[e] supergiants. IV. Hen3-298 and Hen3-303

We present the results of optical and near-IR spectroscopic and near-IR photometric observations of the emission-line stars Hen3-298 and Hen3-303. Strong emission in the H-alpha line is found in both objects. The presence of Fe II and [O I] emission lines in the spectrum of Hen3-298 indicates that it is a B[e] star. The double-peaked CO line profiles, found in the infrared spectrum of Hen3-298, along with the optical line profiles suggest that the star is surrounded by a rotating circumstellar disk. Both objects also show infrared excesses, similar to those of B[e] stars. The radial velocities of the absorption and emission lines as well as a high reddening level suggest that the objects are located in the Norma spiral arm at a distance of 3-4.5 kpc. We estimated a luminosity of log (L/L_sun) ~ 5.1 and a spectral type of no earlier than B3 for Hen3-298. Hen3-303 seems to be a less luminous B-type object (log (L/L_sun) ~ 4.3), located in the same spiral arm.

IRAS 08544-4431 : a new post-AGB star in a binary system surrounded by a dusty disc

We present an analysis of our extensive data-set on IRAS 08544-4431. It is the first object we discuss of our newly defined sample of stars, selected for their position in the 'RV Tauri' box in the IRAS [12]-[25], [25]-[60] two-color diagram. Moreover, our selection criteria included an observed excess in the L-band, indicative of a dusty disc. The SED of IRAS 08544-4431 shows a broad IR excess starting already at H. Our optical photometric data reveal some evidence for deep and] shallow minima in the light curve and a pulsation time-scale of around 100 days with a small amplitude (peak-to-peak amplitude in V = 0.17 mag). Our CORALIE radial velocity measurements show that IRAS 08544-4431 is a binary system with a period of 499 +/- 3 days and a mass function of 0.02 M_sun. Moreover, IRAS 08544-4431 is detected in both the CO (2-1) and (1-0) mm-wave emission lines. The triangular shape of the weak CO profile confirms that part of the circumstellar material is not freely expanding but resides probably in a dusty circumbinary disc. Our chemical abundance analysis of a high resolution spectrum of high S/N reveals that a depletion process has modified the photospheric abundances to a moderate extent ([Zn/Fe]=+0.4). All these findings confirm that the F-type IRAS 08544-4431 is another good example of a binary Post-AGB star surrounded by a dusty disc. The H-alpha P-Cygni profile shows ongoing mass-loss with a very high outflow velocity, the origin of which is not understood. The strength and velocity of the H-alpha-absorption are modulated with the orbital motion; the maxima of both quantities (+/- 400 km/s, 5 Angstrom, respectively) occur at superior conjunction.

The light curve of the semiregular variable L2 Puppis: I. A recent dimming event from dust

The nearby Mira-like variable L2 Pup is shown to be undergoing an unprecedented dimming episode. The stability of the period rules out intrinsic changes to the star, leaving dust formation along the line of sight as the most likely explanation. Episodic dust obscuration events are fairly common in carbon stars but have not been seen in oxygen-rich stars. We also present a 10-micron spectrum, taken with the Japanese IRTS satellite, showing strong silicate emission which can be fitted with a detached, thin dust shell, containing silicates and corundum.

The mysterious eruption of V838 Mon

V838 Mon is marking one of the most mysterious stellar outbursts on record. The spectral energy distribution of the progenitor resembles an under-luminous F main sequence star (at V=15.6 mag), that erupted into a cool supergiant following a complex and multi-maxima lightcurve (peaking at V=6.7 mag). The outburst spectrum show BaII, LiI and lines of several s-elements, with wide P-Cyg profiles and a moderate and retracing emission in the Balmer lines. A light-echo discovered expanding around the object helped to constrain the distance (d=790+/-30 pc), providing M_V=+4.45 in quiescence and M_V=-4.35 at optical maximum (somewhat dependent on the still uncertain E(B-V)=0.5 reddening). The general outburst trend is toward lower temperatures and larger luminosities, and continuing so at the time of writing. The object properties conflict with a classification within already existing categories: the progenitor was not on a post-AGB track and thus the similarities with the born-again AGB stars FG Sge, V605 Aql and Sakurai's object are limited to the cool giant spectrum at maximum; the cool spectrum, the moderate wind velocity (500 km/sec and progressively reducing) and the monotonic decreasing of the low ionization condition argues against a classical nova scenario. The closest similarity is with a star that erupted into an M-type supergiant discovered in M31 by Rich et al. (1989), that became however much brighter by peaking at M_V=-9.95, and with V4332 Sgr that too erupted into an M-type giant (Martini et al. 1999) and that attained a lower luminosity, closer to that of V838 Mon. M31-RedVar, V4332 Sgr and V838 Mon could be manifestations of the same and new class of astronomical objects.

Circumstellar environment of RX Puppis

The symbiotic Mira, RX Pup, shows long-term variations in its mean light level due to variable obscuration by circumstellar dust. The last increase in extinction towards the Mira, between 1995 and 2000, has been accompanied by large changes in the degree of polarization in the optical and red spectral range. The lack of any obvious associated changes in the position angle may indicate the polarization variations are driven by changes in the properties of the dust grains (e.g. variable quantity of dust and variable particle size distribution, due to dust grain formation and growth) rather than changes in the viewing geometry of the scattering region(s), e.g. due to the binary rotation.

A search for previously unrecognised metal-poor subdwarfs in the Hipparcos astrometric catalogue

We have identified 317 stars included in the Hipparcos astrometric catalogue which have parallaxes measured to a precision of better than 15%, and whose location in the (M_V, (B-V)_T) diagram implies a metallicity comparable to or less than that of the intermediate-abundance globular cluster, M5. We have undertaken an extensive literature search to locate Stromgren, Johnson/Cousins and Walraven photometry for over 120 stars. In addition, we present new UBVRI photometry of 201 of these candidate halo stars, together with similar data for a further 14 known metal-poor subdwarfs. Those observations provide the first extensive dataset of RI photometry of metal-poor, main-sequence stars with well-determined trigonometric parallaxes. Finally, we have obtained intermediate-resolution optical spectroscopy of 175 stars. We are able to estimate abundances for 270 stars. The overwhelming majority have near-solar abundance, with their inclusion in the present sample stemming from errors in the colours listed in the Hipparcos catalogue. Only 44 stars show consistent evidence of abundances below [Fe/H]= -1.0. Nine are additions to the small sample of metal-poor subdwarfs with accurate photometry. We consider briefly the implication of these results for cluster main-sequence fitting.

Multiwavelength Monitoring of the BL Lacertae Object PKS 2155-304 in May 1994. I. The Ground-Based Campaign

Optical, near-infrared, and radio observations of the BL Lac object PKS2155-304 were obtained simultaneously with a continuous UV/EUV/X-ray monitoring campaign in 1994 May. Further optical observations were gathered throughout most of 1994. The radio, millimeter, and near-infrared data show no strong correlations with the higher energies. The optical light curves exhibit flickering of 0.2-0.3 mag on timescales of 1-2 days, superimposed on longer timescale variations. Rapid variations of ~0.01 mag/min, which, if real, are the fastest seen to date for any BL Lac object. Small (0.2-0.3 mag) increases in the V and R bands occur simultaneously with a flare seen at higher energies. All optical wavebands (UBVRI) track each other well over the period of observation with no detectable delay. For most of the period the average colors remain relatively constant, although there is a tendency for the colors (in particular B-V) to vary more when the source fades. In polarized light, PKS 2155-304 showed strong color dependence and the highest optical polarization (U = 14.3%) ever observed for this source. The polarization variations trace the flares seen in the ultraviolet flux.
