A statistical mechanical analysis on the possibility of achieving fair cylindrical dice

Many have dedicated their time trying to determine the ideal conditions for a cylinder to have equal probabilities of falling with one of its faces facing upwards or on its side. However, to this day, there is no concrete analysis of what these conditions should be. In order to determine such circumstances, a theoretical analysis was conducted, considering approaches from Rigid Body Dynamics and Statistical Mechanics. An experimental system was also built to improve control over the launches, and a comparative analysis was performed between the results obtained experimentally and the theory. It was concluded that the environment and other launching conditions have a significant influence; nevertheless, it is possible, under controlled conditions, to determine, within certain limits, the expected probabilities.

One-loop corrections in the z=3 Lifshitz extension of QED

In this work we study a z=3 Horava-Lifshitz-like extension of QED in (3+1) dimensions. We calculate the one-loop radiative corrections to the two and three-point functions of the gauge and fermion fields. Such corrections were achieved using the perturbative approach and a dimensional regularization was performed only in the spatial sector. Renormalization was required to eliminate the divergent contributions emergent from the photon and electron self-energies and from the three-point function. We verify that the one-loop vertex functions satisfy the usual Ward identities and using renormalization group methods we show that the model is asymptotically free.

An UV Completion of Five Dimensional Scalar QED and Lorentz Symmetry

We study a five dimensional Horava-Lifshitz like scalar QED with dynamical exponent z=2. Consistency of the renormalization procedure requires the presence of four quartic and one six-fold scalar couplings besides the terms bilinear in the scalar fields. We compute one-loop radiative corrections to the parameters in the original Lagrangian employing dimensional regularization in the spacial part of the Feynman integrals and prove the relevant Ward identities. By using renormalization group methods, we determine the behavior of the coupling constants with changes in the energy and discuss the emergence of Lorentz symmetry at low energies.

Transitions to three-dimensional flows in a cylinder driven by oscillations of the sidewall

The transition from two-dimensional to three-dimensional flows in a finite circular cylinder driven by an axially oscillating sidewall is explored in detail. The complete symmetry group of this flow, including a spatio-temporal symmetry related to the oscillating sidewall, is $Z_2\times O(2)$. Previous studies in flows with the same symmetries, such as symmetric bluff-body wakes and periodically forced rectangular cavities, were unable to obtain the theoretically predicted bifurcation to modulated traveling waves. In the simpler cylindrical geometry, where the azimuthal direction is physically periodic, we have found these predicted modulated traveling waves as stable fully saturated nonlinear solutions for the first time. A careful analysis of the base states and their linear stability identifies different parameter regimes where three-dimensional states that are either synchronous with the forcing or quasiperiodic, corresponding to different symmetry-breaking processes. These results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions and previous results in similar flows. These different regimes are separated by three codimension-two bifurcation points that are yet to be fully analyzed theoretically. Finally, the saturated nonlinear states and their properties in different parameter regimes are analyzed.
