Emergent Topological Semimetal

A material's electronic topology, which is generally described via its Bloch states and the associated bandstructure, will be enriched by the presence of interactions. In metallic settings, the interactions are usually treated through the concept of quasiparticles. Using the genuinely quantum critical heavy fermion compound CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$, we investigate what happens if no well-defined quasiparticles are present. Surprisingly, we discover a topological semimetal phase that emerges from the material's quantum critical state and exhibits a dome structure as a function of magnetic field and pressure. To understand these results, we study a Weyl-Kondo semimetal model at a Kondo destruction quantum critical point. Indeed, it exhibits features in the spectral function that can define topological crossings beyond the quasiparticle picture. We expect our work to stimulate the search for other emergent topological phases.

Effectiveness of probabilistic contact tracing in epidemic containment: the role of super-spreaders and transmission path reconstruction

The recent COVID-19 pandemic underscores the significance of early-stage non-pharmacological intervention strategies. The widespread use of masks and the systematic implementation of contact tracing strategies provide a potentially equally effective and socially less impactful alternative to more conventional approaches, such as large-scale mobility restrictions. However, manual contact tracing faces strong limitations in accessing the network of contacts, and the scalability of currently implemented protocols for smartphone-based digital contact tracing becomes impractical during the rapid expansion phases of the outbreaks, due to the surge in exposure notifications and associated tests. A substantial improvement in digital contact tracing can be obtained through the integration of probabilistic techniques for risk assessment that can more effectively guide the allocation of new diagnostic tests. In this study, we first quantitatively analyze the diagnostic and social costs associated with these containment measures based on contact tracing, employing three state-of-the-art models of SARS-CoV-2 spreading. Our results suggest that probabilistic techniques allow for more effective mitigation at a lower cost. Secondly, our findings reveal a remarkable efficacy of probabilistic contact-tracing techniques in performing backward and multi-step tracing and capturing super-spreading events.

Nuclear and magnetic spin structure of the antiferromagnetic triangular lattice compound LiCrTe$_2$ investigated by $\mu^+$SR as well as neutron and X-ray diffraction

Two$-$dimensional (2D) triangular lattices antiferromagnets (2D$-$TLA) often manifest intriguing physical and technological properties, due to the strong interplay between lattice geometry and electronic properties. The recently synthesized 2$-$dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide LiCrTe$_2$, being a 2D$-$TLA, enriched the range of materials which can present such properties. In this work, muon spin rotation ($\mu^+$SR) and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) have been utilized to reveal the true magnetic nature and ground state of LiCrTe$_2$. From high$-$resolution NPD the magnetic spin order at base$-$temperature is not, as previously suggested, helical, but rather collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) with ferromagnetic (FM) spin coupling within the $ab-$plane and AFM coupling along the $c-$axis. The ordered magnetic Cr moment is established as $\mu_{\rm Cr}=$ 2.36 $\mu_{\rm B}$. From detailed $\mu^+$SR measurements we observe an AFM ordering temperature $T_{\rm N}\approx$ 125 K. This value is remarkably higher than the one previously reported by magnetic bulk measurements. From $\mu^+$SR we are able to extract the magnetic order parameter, whose critical exponent allows us to categorize LiCrTe$_2$ in the 3D Heisenberg AFM universality class. Finally, by combining our magnetic studies with high$-$resolution synchrotron X$-$ray diffraction (XRD), we find a clear coupling between the nuclear and magnetic spin lattices. This suggests the possibility for a strong magnon$-$phonon coupling, similar to what has been previously observed in the closely related compound LiCrO$_2$.

Cascade of magnetic-field-driven quantum phase transitions in Ce3Pd20Si6

Magnetically hidden order is a hypernym for electronic ordering phenomena that are visible to macroscopic thermodynamic probes but whose microscopic symmetry cannot be revealed with conventional neutron or x-ray diffraction. In a handful of f-electron systems, the ordering of odd-rank multipoles leads to order parameters with a vanishing neutron cross-section. Among them, Ce$_3$Pd$_{20}$Si$_6$ is known for its unique phase diagram exhibiting two distinct multipolar-ordered ground states (phases II and II'), separated by a field-driven quantum phase transition associated with a putative change in the ordered quadrupolar moment from $O_2^0$ to $O_{xy}$. Using torque magnetometry at subkelvin temperatures, here we find another phase transition at higher fields above 12 T, which appears only for low-symmetry magnetic field directions $\mathbf{B} \parallel \langle11L\rangle$ with $1 < L \leq 2$. While the order parameter of this new phase II'' remains unknown, the discovery renders Ce$_3$Pd$_{20}$Si$_6$ a unique material with two field-driven phase transitions between distinct multipolar phases. They are both clearly manifested in the magnetic-field dependence of the field-induced (111) Bragg intensities measured with neutron scattering for $\mathbf{B} \parallel [112]$. We also find from inelastic neutron scattering that the number of nondegenerate collective excitations induced by the magnetic field correlates with the number of phases in the magnetic phase diagram for the same field direction. Furthermore, the magnetic excitation spectrum suggests that the new phase II'' may have a different propagation vector, revealed by the minimum in the dispersion that may represent the Goldstone mode of this hidden-order phase.
