Single spin asymmetries in inclusive hadron production from SIDIS to hadronic collisions: universality and phenomenology

In a perturbative QCD approach, with inclusion of spin and transverse momentum effects, experimental data on azimuthal asymmetries observed in polarized semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering and e+ e- annihilations can be used to determine the Sivers, transversity and Collins soft functions. By using these functions, within the same scheme, we predict p(transv. polarized) p -> h + X single spin asymmetries in remarkable agreement with RHIC experimental data.

The Sivers single-spin asymmetry in photon-jet production

We study a weighted asymmetry in the azimuthal distribution of photon-jet pairs produced in the process p^\uparrow p --> γjet X with a transversely polarized proton. We focus on the contribution of the Sivers effect only, considering experimental configurations accessible at RHIC-BNL. We show that predictions for the asymmetry, obtained in terms of gluonic-pole cross sections calculable in perturbative QCD, can be tested and clearly discriminated from those based on a generalized parton model, involving standard partonic cross sections. Experimental measurements of the asymmetry will therefore test our present understanding of single-spin asymmetries.

Transversity and Collins Functions: from e+ e- --> h1 h2 X to SIDIS Processes

We present [1] the first simultaneous extraction of the transversity distribution and the Collins fragmentation function, obtained through a combined analysis of experimental data on azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS), from the HERMES and COMPASS Collaborations, and in e+ e- --> h1 h2 X processes, from the Belle Collaboration.

Transversity and Collins functions from SIDIS and e+e- data

A global analysis of the experimental data on azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS), from the HERMES and COMPASS Collaborations, and in e+e- --> h1 h2 X processes, from the BELLE Collaboration, is performed. It results in the extraction of the Collins fragmentation function and, for the first time, of the transversity distribution function for u and d quarks. These turn out to have opposite signs and to be sizably smaller than their positivity bounds. Predictions for the azimuthal asymmetry A_{UT}^{sin(phi_h + phi_S)}, as will soon be measured at JLab and COMPASS operating on a transversely polarized proton target, are then presented.

Transverse Momentum Dependent Distributions in Hadronic Collisions: p(transv. polarized) p --> D + X and p(transv. polarized) p --> gamma + X

Our understanding of the transverse spin structure of hadrons might definitely get improved by the information we gather on transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions. These new functions could also be crucial for a description of the observed transverse single spin asymmetries (SSA). In a hard scattering model for inclusive hadronic reactions, based on a generalized QCD factorization scheme, many mechanisms - namely the Sivers, Collins, Boer-Mulders effects - might contribute to a SSA. We show how the k_T dependent phases arising from the partonic kinematics together with a suitable choice of experimental configurations could help in disentangling the above mentioned effects. We discuss their potential role in two inclusive hadronic processes: heavy meson and photon production in pp and p pbar collisions.

Constraints on Gluon Sivers Distribution from RHIC Results

We consider the recent RHIC data on the transverse single spin asymmetry (SSA) A_N, measured in p(transv. polarized) p --> pion X processes at mid-rapidity by the PHENIX Collaboration. We analyze this experimental information within a hard scattering approach based on a generalized QCD factorization scheme, with unintegrated, transverse momentum dependent (TMD), parton distribution and fragmentation functions. In this kinematical region, only the gluon Sivers effect could give a large contribution to A_N; its vanishing value is thus used to give approximate upper limits on the gluon Sivers function (GSF). Additional constraints from the Burkardt sum rule for the Sivers distributions are also discussed.

Constraints on the gluon Sivers distribution via transverse single spin asymmetries at midrapidity in p(transv. polarized) p -> pi^0 X processes at BNL RHIC

We consider the recent RHIC data on the transverse single spin asymmetry (SSA) A_N, measured in p(transv. polarized) p -> pi^0 X processes at mid-rapidity by the PHENIX collaboration. The measurement is consistent with a vanishing SSA. We analyze this experimental information within a hard scattering approach based on a generalized QCD factorization scheme, with unintegrated, transverse momentum dependent (TMD), parton distribution and fragmentation functions. It turns out that, in the kinematical region of the data, only the gluon Sivers effect could give a large contribution to A_N; its vanishing value is thus an indication about the possible size of the gluon Sivers function (GSF). Approximate upper limits on its magnitude are derived. Additional constraints obtained combining available parameterizations of the quark Sivers function and the Burkardt sum rule (BSR) for the Sivers distributions are also discussed.

Instanton contribution to the Sivers function

We study the Sivers function for valence u and d quarks in the proton within the instanton model for QCD vacuum, adopting the MIT bag model wave functions for quarks. Within approaches based on perturbative one-gluon final state interactions a non-zero value of the Sivers function is related to the presence of both S and P wave components in quark wave functions. We show that the instanton-induced chromomagnetic, nonperturbative interaction leads to very specific spin-spin correlations between the struck and spectator quarks, resulting in a non-trivial flavour dependence of the Sivers function. Comparison of the obtained Sivers functions with phenomenological parameterizations is discussed.

General partonic structure for hadronic spin asymmetries

The high energy and large p_T inclusive polarized process, (A, S_A) + (B, S_B) --> C + X, is considered under the assumption of a generalized QCD factorization scheme. For the first time all transverse motions, of partons in hadrons and of hadrons in fragmenting partons, are explicitly taken into account; the elementary interactions are computed at leading order with noncollinear exact kinematics, which introduces many phases in the expressions of their helicity amplitudes. Several new spin and k_T dependent soft functions appear and contribute to the cross sections and to spin asymmetries; we put emphasis on their partonic interpretation, in terms of quark and gluon polarizations inside polarized hadrons. Connections with other notations and further information are given in some Appendices. The formal expressions for single and double spin asymmetries are derived. The transverse single spin asymmetry A_N, for p(transv. polarized) p --> pion + X processes is considered in more detail, and all contributions are evaluated numerically by saturating unknown functions with their upper positivity bounds. It is shown that the integration of the phases arising from the noncollinear kinematics strongly suppresses most contributions to the single spin asymmetry, leaving at work predominantly the Sivers effect and, to a lesser extent, the Collins mechanism.

General helicity formalism for Single and Double Spin Asymmetries in p p --> pion + X

We consider within a generalized QCD factorization approach, the high energy inclusive polarized process p p --> pion + X, including all intrinsic partonic motions. Several new spin and k_T-dependent soft functions appear and contribute to cross sections and spin asymmetries. We present here formal expressions for transverse single spin asymmetries and double longitudinal ones. The transverse single spin asymmetry, A_N, is considered in detail, and all contributions are evaluated numerically. It is shown that the azimuthal phase integrations strongly suppress most contributions, leaving at work mainly the Sivers effect.

Helicity Formalism and Spin Asymmetries in Hadronic Processes

We present a generalized QCD factorization scheme for the high energy inclusive polarized process, (A, S_A) + (B, S_B) -> C + X, including all intrinsic partonic motions. This introduces many non-trivial azimuthal phases and several new spin and k_T dependent soft functions. The formal expressions for single and double spin asymmetries are discussed. Numerical results for A_N[p(transv. polarized) p -> pi + X] are presented.

Extracting the Sivers function from polarized SIDIS data and making predictions

The most recent data on the weighted transverse single spin asymmetry $A_{UT}^{\sin(ϕ_h-ϕ_S)}$ from HERMES and COMPASS collaborations are analysed within LO parton model with unintegrated parton distribution and fragmentation functions; all transverse motions are taken into account, with exact kinematics, in the elementary interactions. The overall quality of the data is such that, for the first time, a rather well constrained extraction of the Sivers function for $u$ and $d$ quarks is possible and is performed. Comparisons with models are made. Based on the extracted Sivers functions, predictions for $A_{UT}^{\sin(ϕ_h-ϕ_S)}$ asymmetries at JLab are given; suggestions for further measurements at COMPASS, with a transversely polarized hydrogen target and selecting favourable kinematical ranges, are discussed. Predictions are also presented for Single Spin Asymmetries (SSA) in Drell-Yan processes at RHIC and GSI.

Understanding the role of Cahn and Sivers effects in Deep Inelastic Scattering

The role of intrinsic $k_\perp$ in semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) processes ($l p \to l h X$) is studied with exact kinematics within QCD parton model at leading order; the dependence of the unpolarized cross section on the azimuthal angle between the leptonic and the hadron production planes (Cahn effect) is compared with data and used to estimate the average values of $k_\perp$ both in quark distribution and fragmentation functions. The resulting picture is applied to the description of the weighted single spin asymmetry $A_{UT}^{\sin(ϕ_π- ϕ_S)}$ recently measured by the HERMES collaboration at DESY; this allows to extract parameters for the quark Sivers functions. The extracted Sivers functions give predictions for the COMPASS measurement of $A_{UT}^{\sin(ϕ_π- ϕ_S)}$ in agreement with recent data, while their contribution to HERMES $A_{UL}^{\sinϕ_π}$ is computed and found to be small. Predictions for $A_{UT}^{\sin(ϕ_K - ϕ_S)}$ for kaon production at HERMES are also given.

The role of Cahn and Sivers effects in Deep Inelastic Scattering

The role of intrinsic $\bfk_\perp$ in inclusive and semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering processes ($\ell p \to \ell h X$) is studied with exact kinematics within QCD parton model at leading order; the dependence of the unpolarized cross section on the azimuthal angle between the leptonic and the hadron production planes (Cahn effect) is compared with data and used to estimate the average values of $k_\perp$ both in quark distribution and fragmentation functions. The resulting picture is applied to the description of the weighted single spin asymmetry $A_{UT}^{\sin(ϕ_π- ϕ_S)}$ recently measured by the HERMES collaboration at DESY; this allows to extract some simple models for the quark Sivers functions. These are compared with the Sivers functions which succeed in describing the data on transverse single spin asymmetries in $\pup p \to πX$ processes; the two sets of functions are not inconsistent. The extracted Sivers functions give predictions for the COMPASS measurement of $A_{UT}^{\sin(ϕ_π- ϕ_S)}$ in agreement with recent preliminary data, while their contribution to HERMES $A_{UL}^{\sinϕ_π}$ is computed and found to be small. Predictions for $A_{UT}^{\sin(ϕ_K - ϕ_S)}$ for kaon production at HERMES are also given.

Parton intrinsic motion: unpolarized cross sections and the Sivers effect in inclusive particle production

We present a detailed study, performed in the framework of LO perturbative QCD with the inclusion of spin and k_T effects, of unpolarized cross sections for the Drell-Yan process and for inclusive pion and photon production in hadronic collisions, in different kinematical situations. We find a satisfactory agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental data. This supports the study of spin effects and transverse single spin asymmetries (SSA) within the same scheme. We then present results for SSA, generated by the so-called Sivers effect, in inclusive pion production in proton-proton collisions.

Comments on Cahn and Sivers effects in SIDIS

The role of intrinsic $k_\perp$ in semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) processes ($\ell p \to \ell h X$) is studied within QCD parton model at leading order. The resulting picture is applied to the description of the weighted single spin asymmetry $A_{UL}^{\sinϕ_h}$ measured by HERMES. It is shown that these data could be described by the Sivers mechanism alone. However, the extracted Sivers functions fail to describe the HERMES data on $A_{UT}^{\sin(ϕ_h-ϕ_S)}$.
