Excitation caging in a vertex-frustrated quasiperiodic Einstein artificial spin ice

Naturally occurring bulk quasicrystals are rare, and magnetic instances are rarer still, with chemical constraints typically permitting the synthesis of approximants rather than true quasicrystalline magnets. Here, we present an artificial spin ice based on a recently discovered Einstein lattice, the Hat tiling, which is built from the first known shape - the hat - that tiles the plane only aperiodically. The Einstein artificial spin ice has long-range structural order with no translational symmetry, and low-connectivity vertices with well-defined local ground states and excitations. Together, these properties provide a model two-dimensional quasicrystalline magnet, with magnetic correlations that we probe with magnetic force microscopy and parallel-tempered Monte Carlo simulations. We identify a two-stage partial ordering process, driven by the competition between two possible positions for magnetic excitations. This competition is resolved in the ground-state manifold, where exactly one magnetic excitation is caged on each antihat, yet the manifold remains macroscopically degenerate. This yields an unusual type of medium-range order, where the underlying quasiperiodic long-range order is randomly modulated by a strictly constrained disorder. Our findings establish the Einstein artificial spin ice as a blueprint for understanding quasicrystalline magnetism, demonstrating how quasiperiodic monotile geometries can be exploited to engineer unconventional magnetic phases with no direct equivalent in periodic systems.

Ferromagnetic fragmented state in the pyrochlore Ho$_2$Ru$_2$O$_7$

The consecutive magnetic ordering of the Ho and Ru ions in the pyrochlore Ho2Ru2O7 and their interplay are investigated by neutron scattering, magnetic and specific heat measurements. The Ru moments order at 95 K into a $\Gamma_5$ easy-plane antiferromagnetic state. At 1.55 K the Ho moments order into an unusual $\Gamma_9$ ferromagnetic state with extensive ground state entropy and structured spin dynamics. It is shown how the internal fields with $\Gamma_5$ and $\Gamma_9$ geometry allow for two symmetry breaking transitions. The lower temperature ordering is driven by ruthenium mediated interactions between holmium moments as spin ice correlations develop. The unsaturated order is compatible with a fragmented ferromagnetic state equivalent to pyrochlore kagome ice.

Collective magnetic state induced by charge disorder in the non-Kramers rare-earth pyrochlore Tb$_{2}$ScNbO$_{7}$

Geometrical frustration, as in pyrochlore lattices made of corner-sharing tetrahedra, precludes the onset of conventional magnetic ordering, enabling the stabilization of fluctuating spin states at low temperature. Disorder is a subtle ingredient that can modify the nature of these exotic non-ordered phases. Here, we study the interplay between disorder and magnetic frustration in the new pyrochlore Tb$_{2}$ScNbO$_{7}$ where the non magnetic site presents a charge disorder Nb$^{5+}$/Sc$^{3+}$. Its quantification with sophisticated diffraction techniques (electrons, X-rays, neutrons) allows us to estimate the distribution of the splitting of the magnetic Tb$^{3+}$ non-Kramers ground state doublets and to compare it with excitations measured in inelastic neutron scattering. Combining macroscopic and neutron scattering measurements, we show that a clear spin glass transition at 1 K stems out while retaining strong spin liquid correlations. Our results suggest that Tb$_{2}$ScNbO$_{7}$ stabilizes one of the novel disorder induced quantum spin liquid or topological glassy phases recently proposed theoretically.

Neutron scattering from fragmented frustrated magnets

The fragmentation description is used to analyse calculated neutron scattering intensities from kagom\'e ice and spin ice systems. The longitudinal, transverse and harmonic fragments produce independent contributions to the neutron scattering intensity. This framework is used to analyse the ordering due to quantum fluctuations in the topologically constrained phase of kagom\'e ice and the monopole crystal phase of spin ice. Here, quantum fluctuations are restricted to the transverse fragment and they drive the system into a double-$q$ structure in which longitudinal and transverse fragments have a different ordering wave vector. The intensity reduction of the Bragg peaks for the transverse fragments, compared with known classical limits can be used as a diagnostic tool for quantum fluctuations. Published quantum Monte Carlo data for spin ice in a $[111]$ field are consistent with the proposed protocol.

Coherent phonons and the interplay between charge density wave and Mott phases in 1$T$-TaSe$_{2}$

1$T$-TaSe$_{2}$ is host to coexisting strongly-correlated phases including charge density waves (CDWs) and an unusual Mott transition at low temperature. Here, we investigate coherent phonon oscillations in 1$T$-TaSe$_{2}$ using a combination of time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TR-ARPES) and time-resolved reflectivity (TRR). Perturbation by a femtosecond laser pulse triggers a modulation of the valence band binding energy at the $\Gamma$-point, related to the Mott gap, that is consistent with the in-plane CDW amplitude mode frequency. By contrast, TRR measurements show a modulation of the differential reflectivity comprised of multiple frequencies belonging to the distorted CDW lattice modes. Comparison of the temperature dependence of coherent and spontaneous phonons across the CDW transition shows that the amplitude mode intensity is more easily suppressed during perturbation of the CDW state by the optical excitation compared to other modes. Our results clearly identify the relationship of the in-plane CDW amplitude mode with the Mott phase in 1$T$-TaSe$_{2}$ and highlight the importance of lattice degrees of freedom.
