Vus and lepton universality from kaon decays with the KLOE detector

KLOE has measured most decay branching ratios of Ks, Kl and K+/- mesons. It has also measured the Kl and the K+- lifetime and determined the shape of the form factors involved in kaon semileptonic decays. We present in the following a description of the above measurements and a well organized compendium of all of our data, with particular attention to correlations. These data provide the basis for the determination of the CKM parameter Vus and a test of the unitarity of the quark flavor mixing matrix. We also test lepton universality and place bounds on new physics using measurements of Vus from Kl2 and Kl3 decays.

Measurement of the charged kaon lifetime with the KLOE detector

We have measured the charged kaon lifetime using a sample of 15 \times 10^6 tagged kaon decays. Charged kaons were produced in pairs at the DA\PhiNE ϕ-factory, e^+e^- \to ϕ\to K^+ K^-. The decay of a K^+ was tagged by the production of a K^- and viceversa. The lifetime was obtained, for both charges, from independent measurements of the decay time and decay lenght distributions. From fits to the four distributions we find τ= (12.347\pm0.030) ns.

Tunable resonators for quantum circuits

We have designed, fabricated and measured high-Q $λ/2$ coplanar waveguide microwave resonators whose resonance frequency is made tunable with magnetic field by inserting a DC-SQUID array (including 1 or 7 SQUIDs) inside. Their tunability range is 30% of the zero field frequency. Their quality factor reaches up to 3$\times10^4$. We present a model based on thermal fluctuations that accounts for the dependance of the quality factor with magnetic field.

Precise measurements of the eta and the neutral kaon meson masses with the KLOE detector

We present precise measurements of the eta and K0 masses using the processes phi to eta gamma, eta to gamma gamma and phi to Ks Kl, Ks to pi+ pi-. The K0 mass measurement, M_K=497.583 +/- 0.005 (stat) +/- 0.020 (syst) MeV, is in acceptable agreement with the previous measurements but is more accurate. We find m(eta) = 547.874 +/- 0.007 (stat) +/- 0.031 (syst) MeV. Our value is the most accurate to date and is in agreement with two recent measurements based on eta decays, but is inconsistent, by about 10 sigma, with a measurement of comparable precision based on eta production at threshold.

Current to frequency conversion in a Josephson circuit

The voltage oscillations which occur in an ideally current-biased Josephson junction, were proposed to make a current standard for metrology. We demonstrate similar oscillations in a more complex Josephson circuit derived from the Cooper pair box: the quantronium. When a constant current I is injected in the gate capacitor of this device, oscillations develop at the frequency fB=I/2e, with e the electron charge. We detect these oscillations through the sidebands induced at multiples of fB in the spectrum of a microwave signal reflected on the circuit, up to currents I exceeding 100 pA. We discuss the potential interest of this current to frequency conversion experiment for metrology.

Measurement of the slope parameter αfor the η\to 3π^0 decay at KLOE

We report a preliminary measurement of the slope parameter $α$ for the $η\to 3\piz$ decay carried out with KLOE at DA$Φ$NE; where $α$ is the parameter describing the energy dependence of the square of the matrix element for this decay. By fitting the event density in the Dalitz plot with a collected statistic of 420 pb$^{-1}$ we determine $α= -0.027 \pm 0.004 (stat) ^{+0.004}_{-0.006} (syst)$. This result is consistent with current chiral perturbation theory calculations within the unitary approach.

Determination of the η\toπ^+π^-π^0 Dalitz Plot slopes and asymmetries with the KLOE detector

We have studied, with the KLOE detector at the DA$Φ$NE $Φ$-Factory, the dynamics of the decay $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ using data from the radiative $ϕ\toηγ$ decay for an integrated luminosity $L = 450 \textrm{pb^{-1}}$. From a fit to the Dalitz plot density distribution we obtain a precise measurement of the slope parameters. This should allow to improve the knowledge of the decay amplitude which is sensitive to the u-d quark mass difference. We also present new best results on the C-violating asymmetries in the $η\toπ^+π^-π^0$ decay.

Search for the K(S) --> e+e- decay with the KLOE detector at DAFNE

We present results of a direct search for the decay KS --> e+e- with the KLOE detector, obtained with a sample of e+e- --> phi --> KSKL events produced at DAFNE, the Frascati phi-factory, for an integrated luminosity of 1.3fb-1. The Standard Model prediction for this decay is BR(KS --> e+e-) = 1.6*10^-15. The search has been performed tagging the KS decays by simultaneous detection of a KL interaction in the calorimeter. Background rejection has been optimized by using both kinematic cuts and particle identification. At the end of the analysis chain we find BR(KS --> e+e-) < 2.1*10^-8 at 90% CL, which improves by a factor of ~7 on the previous best result, obtained by CPLEAR experiment.

Prospects for e+e- physics at Frascati between the phi and the psi

We present a detailed study, done in the framework of the INFN 2006 Roadmap, of the prospects for e+e- physics at the Frascati National Laboratories. The physics case for an e+e- collider running at high luminosity at the phi resonance energy and also reaching a maximum center of mass energy of 2.5 GeV is discussed, together with the specific aspects of a very high luminosity tau-charm factory. Subjects connected to Kaon decay physics are not discussed here, being part of another INFN Roadmap working group. The significance of the project and the impact on INFN are also discussed. All the documentation related to the activities of the working group can be found in http://www.roma1.infn.it/people/bini/roadmap.html.

Bloch Oscillations in a Josephson Circuit

Bloch oscillations predicted to occur in current-biased single Josephson junctions have eluded direct observation up to now. Here, we demonstrate similar Bloch oscillations in a slightly richer Josephson circuit, the quantronium. The quantronium is a Bloch transistor with two small junctions in series, defining an island, in parallel with a larger junction. In the ground state, the microwave impedance of the device is modulated periodically with the charge on the gate capacitor coupled to the transistor island. When a current flows across this capacitor, the impedance modulation occurs at the Bloch frequency, which yields Bloch sidebands in the spectrum of a reflected continuous microwave signal. We have measured this spectrum, and compared it to predictions based on a simple model for the circuit. We discuss the interest of this experiment for metrology and for mesoscopic physics.

e+e- --> e+e- pi0 pi0 at Daphne

The production of the sigma(500) meson in gamma gamma --> pi0 pi0 is studied. In particular, the KLOE data collected during the DAPHNE run at sqrt(s)= 1 GeV are appropriate to this purpose because of the strong reduction of Kaon backgrounds.

Contribution of the direct decay $ϕ\toπ^+ π^- γ$ to the process $e^+ e^- \to π^+ π^- γ$ at DA$Φ$NE

The potential of DAPHNE to explore direct radiative decay $ϕ\to π^+ π^- γ$ is studied in detail. Predictions of different theoretical models for this decay are compared. We find that it should be possible to discriminate between these models at DAPHNE in one year, even assuming a relatively low luminosity ${\cal{L}} = 10^{31} {\rm cm}^{-2} {\rm sec^{-1}}$. The influence of the decay $ϕ\to π^+ π^- γ$ on the measurement of total cross section $σ(e^+e^- \to {\rm hadrons})$ by tagging a photon in the reaction $e^+e^- \to π^+π^- γ$ is also discussed.
