Implementation of the Log-Conformation Formulation for Two-Dimensional Viscoelastic Flow

We have implemented the log-conformation method for two-dimensional viscoelastic flow in COMSOL, a commercial high-level finite element package. The code is verified for an Oldroyd-B fluid flowing past a confined cylinder. We are also able to describe the well-known bistability of the viscoelastic flow in a cross-slot geometry for a FENE-CR fluid, and we describe the changes required for performing simulations with the Phan-Thien-Tanner (PTT), Giesekus and FENE-P models. Finally, we calculate the flow of a FENE-CR fluid in a geometry with three in- and outlets. The implementation is included in the supplementary material, and we hope that it can inspire new as well as experienced researchers in the field of differential constitutive equations for viscoelastic flow.

Topology optimization of robust superhydrophobic surfaces

In this paper we apply topology optimization to micro-structured superhydrophobic surfaces for the first time. It has been experimentally observed that a droplet suspended on a brush of micrometric posts shows a high static contact angle and low roll-off angle. To keep the fluid from penetrating the space between the posts, we search for an optimal post cross section, that minimizes the vertical displacement of the liquid-air interface at the base of the drop when a pressure difference is applied. Topology optimisation proves effective in this framework, showing that posts with a branching cross-section are optimal, which is consistent with several biologic strategies to achieve superhydrophobicity. Through a filtering technique, we can also control the characteristic length scale of the optimal design, thus obtaining feasible geometries

Mass and charge transport in micro and nano-fluidic channels

We consider laminar flow of incompressible electrolytes in long, straight channels driven by pressure and electro-osmosis. We use a Hilbert space eigenfunction expansion to address the general problem of an arbitrary cross section and obtain general results in linear-response theory for the mass and charge transport coefficients which satisfy Onsager relations. In the limit of non-overlapping Debye layers the transport coefficients are simply expressed in terms of parameters of the electrolyte as well as the hydraulic radius R=2A/P with A and P being the cross-sectional area and perimeter, respectively. In articular, we consider the limits of thin non-overlapping as well as strongly overlapping Debye layers, respectively, and calculate the corrections to the hydraulic resistance due to electro-hydrodynamic interactions.

Universality in edge-source diffusion dynamics

We show that in edge-source diffusion dynamics the integrated concentration N(t) has a universal dependence with a characteristic time-scale tau=(A/P)^2 pi/(4D), where D is the diffusion constant while A and P are the cross-sectional area and perimeter of the domain, respectively. For the short-time dynamics we find a universal square-root asymptotic dependence N(t)=N0 sqrt(t/tau) while in the long-time dynamics N(t) saturates exponentially at N0. The exponential saturation is a general feature while the associated coefficients are weakly geometry dependent.
