Tevatron-for-LHC Report of the QCD Working Group

The experiments at Run 2 of the Tevatron have each accumulated over 1 inverse femtobarn of high-transverse momentum data. Such a dataset allows for the first precision (i.e. comparisons between theory and experiment at the few percent level) tests of QCD at a hadron collider. While the Large Hadron Collider has been designed as a discovery machine, basic QCD analyses will still need to be performed to understand the working environment. The Tevatron-for-LHC workshop was conceived as a communication link to pass on the expertise of the Tevatron and to test new analysis ideas coming from the LHC community. The TeV4LHC QCD Working Group focussed on important aspects of QCD at hadron colliders: jet definitions, extraction and use of Parton Distribution Functions, the underlying event, Monte Carlo tunes, and diffractive physics. This report summarizes some of the results achieved during this workshop.

Les Houches Physics at TeV Colliders 2005, Standard Model and Higgs working group: Summary report

This Report summarises the activities of the "SM and Higgs" working group for the Workshop "Physics at TeV Colliders", Les Houches, France, 2-20 May, 2005. On the one hand, we performed a variety of experimental and theoretical studies on standard candles (such as W, Z, and ttbar production), treating them either as proper signals of known physics, or as backgrounds to unknown physics; we also addressed issues relevant to those non-perturbative or semi-perturbative ingredients, such as Parton Density Functions and Underlying Events, whose understanding will be crucial for a proper simulation of the actual events taking place in the detectors. On the other hand, several channels for the production of the Higgs, or involving the Higgs, have been considered in some detail. The report is structured into four main parts. The first one deals with Standard Model physics, except the Higgs. A variety of arguments are treated here, from full simulation of processes constituting a background to Higgs production, to studies of uncertainties due to PDFs and to extrapolations of models for underlying events, from small-$x$ issues to electroweak corrections which may play a role in vector boson physics. The second part of the report treats Higgs physics from the point of view of the signal. In the third part, reviews are presented on the current status of multi-leg, next-to-leading order and of next-to-next-to-leading order QCD computations. Finally, the fourth part deals with the use of Monte Carlos for simulation of LHC physics.

Off-shell scattering amplitudes in the double-logarithmic approximation

When scattering amplitudes are calculated in the double-logarithmic approximation, it is possible to relate the double-logarithmic on-shell and off-shell amplitudes. Explicit relations are obtained for scattering amplitudes in QED, QCD, and the ElectroWeak Standard Model. The off-shell amplitudes are considered in the hard and the Regge kinematic limits. We compare our results in both the Feynman and Coulomb gauges.

Neutrino Dimuon Production and the Strangeness Asymmetry of the Nucleon

We have performed the first global QCD analysis to include the CCFR and NuTeV dimuon data, which provide direct constraints on the strange and anti-strange parton distributions, $s(x)$ and $\bar{s}(x)$. To explore the strangeness sector, we adopt a general parametrization of the non-perturbative $s(x), \bar{s}(x)$ functions satisfying basic QCD requirements. We find that the strangeness asymmetry, as represented by the momentum integral $[S^{-}]\equiv \int_0^1 x [s(x)-\bar{s}(x)] dx$, is sensitive to the dimuon data provided the theoretical QCD constraints are enforced. We use the Lagrange Multiplier method to probe the quality of the global fit as a function of $[S^-]$ and find $-0.001 < [S^-] < 0.004$. Representative parton distribution sets spanning this range are given. Comparisons with previous work are made.

Les Houches 'Physics at Tev Colliders 2003' QCD/SM Working Group: Summary Report

This report documents the results obtained by the Working Group on Quantum Chromodynamics and the Standard Model for the Workshop `Physics at TeV Colliders'', Les Houches, France, 26 May - 6 June 2003. After a Monte Guide description, the first contributions report on progress in describing multiple interactions, important for the LHC, and underlying events. An announcement of a Monte Carlo database, under construction, is then followed by a number of contributions improving parton shower descriptions. Subsequently, a large number of contributions address resummations in various forms, after which follow studies of QCD effects in pion pair, top quark pair and photon pair plus jet production. After a study of electroweak corrections to hadronic precision observables, the report ends by presenting recent progress in methods to compute finite order corrections at one-loop with many legs, and at two-loop.

Resummation for the Tevatron and LHC boson production at small x

Analysis of small-x semi-inclusive DIS hadroproduction suggests that multiple parton radiation leads to a broadening of transverse momentum distributions beyond that predicted by a straightforward calculation in the Collins-Soper-Sterman formalism. This effect can be modeled by a modification of the resummed form factor in the small-x region. We discuss the impact of such a modification on the production of electroweak bosons at hadron-hadron colliders. We show that if substantial small-x broadening is observed in forward Z boson production in the Tevatron Run-2, it would strongly affect predicted transverse momentum distributions for W, Z, and Higgs boson production at the Large Hadron Collider.

The Parton Structure of the Nucleon and Precision Determination of the Weinberg Angle in Neutrino Scattering

A recently completed next-to-leading-order program to calculate neutrino cross sections, including power-suppressed mass correction terms, has been applied to evaluate the Paschos-Wolfenstein relation, in order to quantitatively assess the validity and significance of the NuTeV anomaly. In particular, we study the shift of $\sin^2 θ_{\mathrm{W}}$ obtained in calculations with a new generation of PDF sets that allow $s(x)\neq \bar{s}(x)$, enabled by recent neutrino dimuon data from CCFR and NuTeV, as compared to the previous $s = \bar{s}$ parton distribution functions like CTEQ6M. The extracted value of $\sin^2 θ_{\mathrm{W}}$ is closely correlated with the strangeness asymmetry momentum integral $\int_{0}^{1}x[s(x)-\bar{s}(x)] dx$. We also consider isospin violating effects that have recently been explored by the MRST group. The results of our study suggest that the new dimuon data, the Weinberg angle measurement, and other data sets used in global QCD parton structure analysis can all be consistent within the Standard Model.

Soft and collinear parton radiation in heavy quark production

When the energy of the heavy quark is comparable with its mass, it is natural to attribute this heavy quark to the hard part of the reaction. At large energies, this approach is impractical due to large logarithms from intensive QCD radiation affecting both inclusive and differential observables. We present a formalism for all-order summation of such logarithms and reliable description of heavy-quark distributions at all energies. As an illustration, we calculate angular distributions of B-mesons produced in neutral-current events at large momentum transfers at the ep collider HERA.

The QCD/SM Working Group: Summary Report

This Report documents the results obtained by the Working Group on Quantum ChromoDynamics and the Standard Model for the Workshop ``Physics at TeV Colliders'', Les Houches, France, 21 May - 1 June 2001. The account of uncertainties in Parton Distribution Functions is reviewed. Progresses in the description of multiparton final states at Next-to-Leading Order and the extension of calculations for precision QCD observables beyond this order are summarized. Various issues concerning the relevance of resummation for observables at TeV colliders is examined. Improvements to algorithms of jet reconstruction are discussed and predictions for diphoton and photon pi-zero production at the LHC are made for kinematic variables of interest regarding searches for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons. Finally, several improvements implemented in Monte-Carlo event generators are documented.

Summary: Working Group on QCD and Strong Interactions

In this summary of the considerations of the QCD working group at Snowmass 2001, the roles of quantum chromodynamics in the Standard Model and in the search for new physics are reviewed, with empahsis on frontier areas in the field. We discuss the importance of, and prospects for, precision QCD in perturbative and lattice calculations. We describe new ideas in the analysis of parton distribution functions and jet structure, and review progress in small-$x$ and in polarization.

Physics at Future Hadron Colliders

We discuss the physics opportunities and detector challenges at future hadron colliders. As guidelines for energies and luminosities we use the proposed luminosity and/or energy upgrade of the LHC (SLHC), and the Fermilab design of a Very Large Hadron Collider (VLHC). We illustrate the physics capabilities of future hadron colliders for a variety of new physics scenarios (supersymmetry, strong electroweak symmetry breaking, new gauge bosons, compositeness and extra dimensions). We also investigate the prospects of doing precision Higgs physics studies at such a machine, and list selected Standard Model physics rates.

Differential Distributions for NLO Neutrino-Production of Charm

Charged current DIS charm production measures the strange-quark PDF. A complete analysis requires both a fully differential theoretical calculation, and a Monte Carlo detector simulation. We present analytic and numeric results at NLO suitable for experimental analysis.

Differential Distributions for NLO Analyses of Charged Current Neutrino-Production of Charm

Experimental analyses of charged current deep inelastic charm production -- as observed through dimuon events in neutrino-iron scattering -- measure the strangeness component of the nucleon sea. A complete analysis requires a Monte Carlo simulation to account for experimental detector acceptance effects; therefore, a fully differential theoretical calculation is necessary to provide complete kinematic information. We investigate the theoretical issues involved in calculating these differential distributions at Next-Leading-Order (NLO). Numerical results are presented for typical fixed target kinematics. We present a corresponding FORTRAN code suitable for experimental NLO analysis.

Large-x Parton Distributions

Reliable knowledge of parton distributions at large x is crucial for many searches for new physics signals in the next generation of collider experiments. Although these are generally well determined in the small and medium x range, it has been shown that their uncertainty grows rapidly for x>0.1. We examine the status of the gluon and quark distributions in light of new questions that have been raised in the past two years about "large-x" parton distributions, as well as recent measurements which have improved the parton uncertainties. Finally, we provide a status report of the data used in the global analysis, and note some of the open issues where future experiments, including those planned for Jefferson Labs, might contribute.

Searching for Strongly Interacting Massive Particles (SIMPs)

We consider laboratory experiments that can detect stable, neutral strongly interacting massive particles (SIMPs). We explore the SIMP annihilation cross section from its minimum value (restricted by cosmological bounds) to the barn range, and vary the mass values from a GeV to a TeV. We calculate, as a function of the SIMP-nucleon cross section, the minimum nucleon number A for which there should be binding in a nucleus. We consider accelerator mass spectrometry with a gold (A=200) target, and compute the likely abundance of anomalous gold nuclei if stable neutral SIMPs exist. We also consider the prospects and problems of detecting such particles at the Tevatron. We estimate optimistically that such detection might be possible for SIMPs with SIMP-nucleon cross sections larger than 0.1 millibarn and masses between 25 and 50 GeV.

Global QCD Analysis of Parton Structure of the Nucleon: CTEQ5 Parton Distributions

An up-to-date global QCD analysis of high energy lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron interactions is performed to better determine the gluon and quark parton distributions in the nucleon. Improved experimental data on inclusive jet production, in conjunction with precise deep inelastic scattering data, place good constraints on the gluon over a wide range of x; while new data on asymmetries in Drell-Yan processes contribute to better determine the d/u ratio. Comparisons with results of other recent global analyses are made, and the differences are described. Open issues and the general problem of determining the uncertainties of parton distributions are discussed.
