Effective decoupling of ferromagnetic sublattices by frustration in Heusler alloys

Magnetic frustration in ferromagnetic metallic systems is unusual due to the long-range and symmetric nature of the exchange interactions. In this work we prove that it is possible to obtain a highly frustrated ferromagnetic phase in a multi-sublattices cubic structure through a fine tuning of the magnetic interactions. This peculiar state is achieved in Ni-Mn-(In, Sn) Heusler alloys and results in the effective decoupling of their two intertwined ferromagnetic sublattices. One sublattice is ferromagnetic long range ordered below the macroscopic Curie temperature (TC ) whereas the second one remains disordered until a crossover to a polarized state occurs at T << TC . This result points out that a fine engineering of the magnetic interactions in metallic systems can lead to interesting novel and emergent phenomena.

Magnetic order and crystalline electric field excitations of the quantum critical heavy fermion ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$

CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ is an unusual example of a stoichiometric heavy fermion ferromagnet, which can be cleanly tuned by hydrostatic pressure to a quantum critical point. In order to understand the origin of this anomalous behavior, we have characterized the magnetic ordering and crystalline electric field (CEF) scheme of this system. While magnetic Bragg peaks are not resolved in neutron powder diffraction, coherent oscillations are observed in zero-field $μ$SR below $T_{\rm C}$, which are consistent with in-plane ferromagnetic ordering consisting of reduced Ce moments. From analyzing the magnetic susceptibility and inelastic neutron scattering, we propose a CEF-level scheme which accounts for the easy-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy, where the low lying first excited CEF exhibits significantly stronger hybridization than the ground state. These results suggest that the orbital anisotropy of the ground state and low lying excited state doublets are important for realizing anisotropic electronic coupling between the $f$- and conduction electrons, which gives rise to the highly anisotropic hybridization observed in photoemission experiments.

Collinear antiferromagnetic order in URu$_2$Si$_{2-x}$P$_x$ revealed by neutron diffraction

The hidden order phase in URu$_2$Si$_2$ is highly sensitive to electronic doping. A special interest in silicon-to-phosphorus substitution is due to the fact that it may allow one, in part, to isolate the effects of tuning the chemical potential from the complexity of the correlated $f$ and $d$ electronic states. We investigate the new antiferromagnetic phase that is induced in URu$_2$Si$_{2-x}$P$_x$ at $x\gtrsim0.27$. Time-of-flight neutron diffraction of a single crystal ($x=0.28$) reveals $c$-axis collinear $\mathbf{q}_\mathrm{m}=(\frac12,\frac12,\frac12)$ magnetic structure with localized magnetic moments ($\approx2.1\,μ_\mathrm{B}$). This points to an unexpected analogy between the (Si,P) and (Ru,Rh) substitution series. Through further comparisons with other tuning studies of URu$_2$Si$_2$, we are able to delineate the mechanisms by which silicon-to-phosphorus substitution affects the system. In particular, both the localization of itinerant 5$f$ electrons as well as the choice of $\mathbf{q}_m$ appears to be consequences of the increase in chemical potential. Further, enhanced exchange interactions are induced by chemical pressure and lead to magnetic order, in which an increase in inter-layer spacing may play a special role.

Spontaneous cycloidal order mediating a spin-reorientation transition in a polar metal

We show how complex modulated order can spontaneously emerge when magnetic interactions compete in a metal with polar lattice distortions. Combining neutron and resonant x-ray scattering with symmetry analysis, we reveal that the spin reorientation in Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ is mediated by a magnetic cycloid whose eccentricity evolves smoothly but rapidly with temperature. We find the cycloid to be highly sensitive to magnetic fields, which appear to continuously generate higher harmonic modulations. Our results provide a unified picture of the rich magnetic phases of this correlated, multi-band polar metal.

Magnetic and electronic structure of Dirac semimetal candidate EuMnSb$_2$

We report an experimental study of the magnetic order and electronic structure and transport of the layered pnictide EuMnSb$_2$, performed using neutron diffraction, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and magnetotransport measurements. We find that the Eu and Mn sublattices display antiferromagnetic (AFM) order below $T_\mathrm{N}^\mathrm{Eu} = 21(1)$ K and $T_\mathrm{N}^\mathrm{Mn} = 350(2)$ K respectively. The former can be described by an A-type AFM structure with the Eu spins aligned along the $c$ axis (an in-plane direction), whereas the latter has a C-type AFM structure with Mn moments along the $a$--axis (perpendicular to the layers). The ARPES spectra reveal Dirac-like linearly dispersing bands near the Fermi energy. Furthermore, our magnetotransport measurements show strongly anisotropic magnetoresistance, and indicate that the Eu sublattice is intimately coupled to conduction electron states near the Dirac point.

On the possibility of magnetic Weyl fermions in non-symmorphic compound PtFeSb

Weyl fermions are expected to exhibit exotic physical properties such as the chiral anomaly, large negative magnetoresistance or Fermi arcs. Recently a new platform to realize these fermions has been introduced based on the appearance of a three-fold band crossing at high symmetry points of certain space groups. These band crossings are composed of two linearly dispersed bands that are topologically protected by a Chern number, and a at band with no topological charge. In this paper we present a new way of inducing two kinds of Weyl fermions, based on two- and three-fold band crossings, in the non-symmorphic magnetic material PtFeSb. By means of density functional theory calculations and group theory analysis we show that magnetic order can split a six-fold degeneracy enforced by non-symmoprhic symmetry to create three-fold or two-fold degenerate Weyl nodes. We also report on the synthesis of a related phase potentially containing two-fold degenerate magnetic Weyl points and extend our group theory analysis to that phase. This is the first study showing that magnetic ordering has the potential to generate new threefold degenerate Weyl nodes, advancing the understanding of magnetic interactions in topological materials.

Band filling effect on polaron localization in La$_{1-x}($Ca$_y$Sr$_{1-y}$)$_{x}$MnO$_3$ manganites

We report on an a $μ$SR and $^{55}$Mn NMR investigation of the magnetic order parameter as a function of temperature in the optimally doped La$_{5/8}$(Ca$_y$Sr$_{1-y}$)$_{3/8}$MnO$_3$ and in the underdoped La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ and La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_3$ metallic manganite families. The study is aimed at unraveling the effect of lattice distortions, implicitly controlled by the Ca-Sr isoelectronic substitution, from that of hole doping $x$ on the Curie temperature $T_c$ and the order of the magnetic transition. At optimal doping, the transitions are second order at all $y$ values, including the $y=1$ (La$_{5/8}$Ca$_{3/8}$MnO$_3$) end member. In contrast, they are first order in the underdoped samples, which show a finite (truncated) order parameter at the Curie point, including La$_{0.75}$Sr$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ whose $T_c$ is much higher than that of La$_{5/8}$Ca$_{3/8}$MnO$_3$. The order parameter curves, on the other hand, exhibit a very minor dependence on $x$, if truncation is excepted. This suggests that the effective exchange interaction between Mn ions is essentially governed by local distortions, in agreement with the original double-exchange model, while truncation is primarily, if not entirely, an effect of under- or overdoping. A phase diagram, separating in the $x-y$ plane polaron-driven first order transitions from regular second order transitions governed by critical fluctuations, is proposed for the La$_{1-x}($Ca$_y$Sr$_{1-y}$)$_{x}$MnO$_3$ system.
