Pseudo-surface acoustic waves in hypersonic surface phononic crystals

We present a theoretical framework allowing to properly address the nature of surface-like eigenmodes in a hypersonic surface phononic crystal, a composite structure made of periodic metal stripes of nanometer size and periodicity of 1 micron, deposited over a semi-infinite silicon substrate. In surface-based phononic crystals there is no distinction between the eigenmodes of the periodically nanostructured overlayer and the surface acoustic modes of the semi-infinite substrate, the solution of the elastic equation being a pseudo-surface acoustic wave partially localized on the nanostructures and radiating energy into the bulk. This problem is particularly severe in the hypersonic frequency range, where semi-infinite substrate's surface acoustic modes strongly couple to the periodic overlayer, thus preventing any perturbative approach. We solve the problem introducing a surface-likeness coefficient as a tool allowing to find pseudo-surface acoustic waves and to calculate their line shapes. Having accessed the pseudo-surface modes of the composite structure, the same theoretical frame allows reporting on the gap opening in the now well-defined pseudo-SAW frequency spectrum. We show how the filling fraction, mass loading and geometric factors affect both the frequency gap, and how the mechanical energy is scattered out of the surface waveguiding modes.

Ab-initio calculation of all-optical time-resolved calorimetry of nanosized systems: Evidence of nanosecond-decoupling of electron and phonon temperatures

The thermal dynamics induced by ultrashort laser pulses in nanoscale systems, i.e. all-optical time-resolved nanocalorimetry is theoretically investigated from 300 to 1.5 K. We report ab-initio calculations describing the temperature dependence of the electron-phonon interactions for Cu nanodisks supported on Si. The electrons and phonons temperatures are found to decouple on the ns time scale at 10 K, which is two orders of magnitude in excess with respect to that found for standard low-temperature transport experiments. By accounting for the physics behind our results we suggest an alternative route for overhauling the present knowledge of the electron-phonon decoupling mechanism in nanoscale systems by replacing the mK temperature requirements of conventional experiments with experiments in the time-domain.

Ultrafast laser pulses to detect and generate fast thermo-mechanical transients in matter

The use of femtosecond laser pulses to impulsively excite thermal and mechanical transients in matter has led, in the last years, to the development of picosecond acoustics. Recently, the pump-probe approach has been applied to nano-engineered materials to optically generate and detect acoustic waves in the GHz-THz frequency range. In this paper, we review the latest advances on ultrafast generation and detection of thermal gradients and pseudo-surface acoustic waves in two-dimensional lattices of metallic nanostructures. Comparing the experimental findings to the numeric analysis of the full thermo-mechanical problem, these materials emerge as model systems to investigate both the mechanical and thermal energy transfer at the nanoscale. The sensitivity of the technique to the nanostructures mass and shape variations, coupled to the phononic crystal properties of the lattices opens the way to a variety of applications ranging from hypersonic waveguiding to mass sensors with femtosecond time-resolution.ens the way to a variety of applications ranging from hypersonic waveguiding to mass sensors with femtosecond time-resolution.

First evidence of transient interactions between $π\toπ^*$ optical excitations and image potential states in graphite

Here we report the experimental evidence of the interactions between the excitations of the $π\toπ^*$ optical transition and the image potential states (IPS) of highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG). By using non-linear angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (NL-ARPES) we show that the IPS photoemission intensity, the effective mass, and the linewidth exhibit a strong variation when the photon energy is tuned across the $π\toπ^*$ saddle points in the 3.1 - 4.5 eV photon energy range. A model based on the self-energy formalism is proposed to correlate the effective mass and the linewidth variations to transient many body effects, when a high carriers density (in the $10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ range) is created by the absorption of a coherent light pulse. This finding brings a clear evidence of a high IPS-bulk coupling in graphite and opens the way for exploiting the IPS as a sensitive, nonperturbing probe for the many-body dynamics in materials.

Evidence for Strong Itinerant Spin Fluctuations in the Normal State of CeFeAsO(0.89)F(0.11) Iron-Oxypnictides

The electronic structure in the normal state of CeFeAsO0.89F0.11 oxypnictide superconductors has been investigated with x-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy. All the data exhibit signatures of Fe d-electron itinerancy. Exchange multiplets appearing in the Fe 3s core level indicate the presence of itinerant spin fluctuations. These findings suggest that the underlying physics and the origin of superconductivity in these materials are likely to be quite different from those of the cuprate high-temperature superconductors. These materials provide opportunities for elucidating the role of magnetic fluctuations in high-temperature superconductivity.

Thermo-mechanical behavior of surface acoustic waves in ordered arrays of nanodisks studied by near infrared pump-probe diffraction experiments

The ultrafast thermal and mechanical dynamics of a two-dimensional lattice of metallic nano-disks has been studied by near infrared pump-probe diffraction measurements, over a temporal range spanning from 100 fs to several nanoseconds. The experiments demonstrate that, in these systems, a two-dimensional surface acoustic wave (2DSAW), with a wavevector given by the reciprocal periodicity of the array, can be excited by ~120 fs Ti:sapphire laser pulses. In order to clarify the interaction between the nanodisks and the substrate, numerical calculations of the elastic eigenmodes and simulations of the thermodynamics of the system are developed through finite-element analysis. At this light, we unambiguously show that the observed 2DSAW velocity shift originates from the mechanical interaction between the 2DSAWs and the nano-disks, while the correlated 2DSAW damping is due to the energy radiation into the substrate.

How strongly correlated is MnSi?

We present an experimental study of the electronic structure of MnSi. Using X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy, X-ray photoemission and X-ray fluorescence we provide experimental evidence that MnSi has a mixed valence ground state. We show that self consistent LDA supercell calculations cannot replicate the XAS spectra of MnSi, while a good match is achieved within the atomic multiplet theory assuming a mixed valence ground state. We discuss the role of the electron-electron interactions in this compound and estimate that the valence fluctuations are suppressed by a factor of 2.5, which means that the Coulomb repulsion is not negligible.

Orientation-dependent C60 electronic structures revealed by photoemission

We observe, with angle-resolved photoemission, a dramatic change in the electronic structure of two C60 monolayers, deposited respectively on Ag (111) and (100) substrates, and similarly doped with potassium to half-filling of the C60 lowest unoccupied molecular orbital. The Fermi surface symmetry, the bandwidth, and the curvature of the dispersion at Gamma point are different. Orientations of the C60 molecules on the two substrates are known to be the main structural difference between the two monolayers, and we present new band-structure calculations for some of these orientations. We conclude that orientations play a key role in the electronic structure of fullerides.

Infrared signatures of the spin-Peierls transition in CuGeO3

We investigated the infrared reflectivity of several Mg- and Si-substituted CuGeO3 single crystals. The temperature dependent b-axis and c-axis optical response is reported. For T<Tsp we detected the activation of zone-boundary phonons along the b axis of the crystal on the pure sample and for 1% Mg and 0.7% Si concentrations. From a detailed analysis of the phonon parameters the redshift of the B2u mode at 48 cm^-1 is observed and discussed in relation to the soft mode expected to drive the spin-Peierls phase transition in CuGeO3. Moreover, the polarization dependence of a magnetic excitation measured in transmission at 44 cm^-1 has been investigated.

Infrared reflectivity of pure and doped CuGeO3

We investigated the far- and mid-infrared reflectivity (20-6000 wavenumber) of several pure and doped CuGeO3 single crystals. The b-axis and c-axis optical response is presented for different temperatures between 4 K and 300 K. Moreover, a full group theoretical analysis of the lattice vibrational modes of CuGeO3 in the high temperature undistorted phase as well as in the low temperature spin-Peierls phase is reported and compared to the experimental results. We observe the activation of zone boundary phonons along the b axis of the crystal below the spin-Peierls transition temperature.
