Technologies for the ELGAR large scale atom interferometer array

We proposed the European Laboratory for Gravitation and Atom-interferometric Research (ELGAR), an array of atom gradiometers aimed at studying space-time and gravitation with the primary goal of observing gravitational waves (GWs) in the infrasound band with a peak strain sensitivity of $3.3 \times 10^{-22}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ at 1.7 Hz. In this paper we detail the main technological bricks of this large scale detector and emphasis the research pathways to be conducted for its realization. We discuss the site options, atom optics, and source requirements needed to reach the target sensitivity. We then discuss required seismic isolation techniques, Gravity Gradient Noise reduction strategies, and the metrology of various noise couplings to the detector.

Concept study and preliminary design of a cold atom interferometer for space gravity gradiometry

We study a space-based gravity gradiometer based on cold atom interferometry and its potential for the Earth's gravitational field mapping. The instrument architecture has been proposed in [Carraz et al., Microgravity Science and Technology 26, 139 (2014)] and enables high-sensitivity measurements of gravity gradients by using atom interferometers in a differential accelerometer configuration. We present the design of the instrument including its subsystems and analyze the mission scenario, for which we derive the expected instrument performances, the requirements on the sensor and its key subsystems, and the expected impact on the recovery of the Earth gravity field.

Cold atom Clocks and Applications

This paper describes advances in microwave frequency standards using laser-cooled atoms at BNM-SYRTE. First, recent improvements of the $^{133}$Cs and $^{87}$Rb atomic fountains are described. Thanks to the routine use of a cryogenic sapphire oscillator as an ultra-stable local frequency reference, a fountain frequency instability of $1.6\times 10^{-14}τ^{-1/2}$ where $τ$ is the measurement time in seconds is measured. The second advance is a powerful method to control the frequency shift due to cold collisions. These two advances lead to a frequency stability of $2\times 10^{-16}$ at $50,000s for the first time for primary standards. In addition, these clocks realize the SI second with an accuracy of $7\times 10^{-16}$, one order of magnitude below that of uncooled devices. In a second part, we describe tests of possible variations of fundamental constants using $^{87}$Rb and $^{133}$Cs fountains. Finally we give an update on the cold atom space clock PHARAO developed in collaboration with CNES. This clock is one of the main instruments of the ACES/ESA mission which is scheduled to fly on board the International Space Station in 2008, enabling a new generation of relativity tests.

Hydrodynamic modes in a trapped gas of metastable helium above the Bose-Einstein transition

This article describes experiments performed with an ultracold gas of metastable helium above the Bose-Einstein transition. The gas is trapped in an harmonic magnetic potential and collective excitations are induced. Both the frequency and the damping rate of the lowest monopole-quadrupole m = 0 mode of excitation are studied at different temperatures and compared to theoretical predictions. Results indicate that the gas goes from a collisionless regime towards a hydrodynamic regime as the elastic collision rate increases, when one goes down along the evaporative cooling ramp. However we find a discrepancy for the collisional parameters in comparison with predictions relying on the value of the scattering length previously estimated. Possible explanations are put forward in the final discussion.
