Properties of Open Quantum Walks on $\mathbb{Z}$

A connection between the asymptotic behavior of the open quantum walk and the spectrum of a generalized quantum coins is studied. For the case of simultaneously diagonalizable transition operators an exact expression for probability distribution of the position of the walker for arbitrary number of steps is found. For a large number of steps the probability distribution consist of maximally two "soliton"-like solution and a certain number of Gaussian distributions. The number of different contributions to the final probability distribution is equal to the number of distinct absolute values in the spectrum of the transition operators. The presence of the zeros in spectrum is an indicator of the "soliton"-like solutions in the probability distribution.

Dissipative preparation of generalised Bell states

A scheme is presented for the dissipative preparation of generalised Bell states of two-qubits, within the context of cavity QED. In the suggested protocol the dissipative processes of spontaneous emission and cavity loss are no longer undesirable, but essential to the required dynamics. Extremely long lived target states are achieved, with fidelities of near unity, utilising cooperativities corresponding to currently available optical cavities. Furthermore, the suggested protocol exhibits excellent scaling of relevant characteristics, with respect to cooperativity, such that improved results may be obtained as the development of experimental capabilities continues.

Dissipative preparation of large W states in Optical Cavities

Two novel schemes are proposed for the dissipative preparation of large W states, of the order of ten qubits, within the context of Cavity QED. By utilizing properties of the irreducible representations of su(3), we are able to construct protocols in which it is possible to restrict the open system dynamics to a fully symmetric irreducible subspace of the total Hilbert space, and hence obtain analytic solutions for effective ground state dynamics of arbitrary sized ensembles of $Λ$ atoms within an optical cavity. In the proposed schemes, the natural decay processes of spontaneous emission and photon loss are no longer undesirable, but essential to the required dynamics. All aspects of the proposed schemes relevant to implementation in currently available optical cavities are explored, especially with respect to increasing system size.

Initial correlation in a system of a spin coupled to a spin bath through an intermediate spin

The strong system-bath correlation is a typical initial condition in many condensed matter and some quantum optical systems. Here, the dynamics of a spin interacting with a spin bath through an intermediate spin are studied. Initial correlations between the spin and the intermediate spin are taken into account. The exact analytical expression for the evolution operator of the spin is found. Furthermore, correlated projection superoperator techniques are applied to the model and a time-convolutionless master equation to second order is derived. It is shown that the time-convolutionless master equation to second order reproduces the exact dynamics for time-scales of the order 1/γ, where γ is the coupling of the central spin to the intermediate spin. It is found that there is a strong dependence on the initial system-bath correlations in the dynamics of the reduced system, which cannot be neglected.

Efficiency of open quantum walk implementation of dissipative quantum computing algorithms

An open quantum walk formalism for dissipative quantum computing is presented. The approach is illustrated with the examples of the Toffoli gate and the Quantum Fourier Transform for 3 and 4 qubits. It is shown that the algorithms based on the open quantum walk formalism are more efficient than the canonical dissipative quantum computing approach. In particular, the open quantum walks can be designed to converge faster to the desired steady state and to increase the probability of detection of the outcome of the computation.

Decoherence-assisted transport in quantum networks

It is shown that energy transfer in a homogeneous fully connected quantum network is assisted by a decohering interaction with environmental spins. Analytic expressions for the transfer probabilities are obtained for the zero temperature case, and the effect is shown to persist at physiological temperatures. This model of decoherence-assisted energy transfer is applied to the Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex.

Open Quantum Walks on Graphs

Open quantum walks (OQW) are formulated as quantum Markov chains on graphs. It is shown that OQWs are a very useful tool for the formulation of dissipative quantum computing algorithms and for dissipative quantum state preparation. In particular, single qubit gates and the CNOT-gate are implemented as OQWs on fully connected graphs. Also, dissipative quantum state preparation of arbitrary single qubit states and of all two-qubit Bell-states is demonstrated. Finally, the discrete time version of dissipative quantum computing is shown to be more efficient if formulated in the language of OQWs.

Decoherence assisted transport in a dimer system

The dynamics of a dimer coupled to two different environments each in a spin star configuration under the influence of decoherence is studied. The exact analytical expression for the transition probability in the dimer system is obtained for different situations, i.e., independent and correlated environments. In all cases considered, it is shown that there exist well-defined ranges of parameters for which decoherent interaction with the environment assists energy transfer in the dimer system. In particular, we find that correlated environments can assist energy transfer more efficiently than separate baths.

Nonequilibrium thermal entanglement for simple qubit systems

The dynamics of simple qubit systems in a chain configuration coupled at both ends to separate bosonic baths at different temperatures is studied. An exact analytical solution of the master equation in the Born-Markov approximation for the reduced density matrix of the qubit system is constructed. The unique non-equilibrium stationary state for the long time behavior of the reduced density matrix in obtained. Dynamical and steady state properties of the concurrence between the first and the last spin are studied.

Nonequilibrium thermal entanglement for three-spin chain

The dynamics of a chain of three spins coupled at both ends to separate bosonic baths at different temperatures is studied. An exact analytical so- lution of the master equation in the Born-Markov approximation for the reduced density matrix of the chain is constructed. It is shown that for long times the reduced density matrix converges to the non-equilibrium steady- state. Dynamical and steady state properties of the concurrence between the first and the last spin are studied.

Non-Markovianity criteria for open system dynamics

A universal definition of non-Markovianity for open systems dynamics is proposed. It is extended from the classical definition to the quantum realm by showing that a `transition' from the Markov to the non-Markov regime occurs when the correlations between the system and the environment, generated by their joint evolution, can no longer be neglected. The suggested definition is based on the comparison between measured correlation functions and those built by assuming that the system is in a Markov regime thus giving a figure of merit of the error coming from this assumption. It is shown that the knowledge of the dynamical map and initial condition of the system is not enough to fully characterise the non-Markovian dynamics of the reduced system. The example of three exactly solvable models, i.e. decoherence and spontaneous emission of the qubit in a bosonic bath and decoherence of the photon's polarization induced by interaction with its spacial degrees of freedom, reveals that previously proposed Markovianity criteria and measures which are based on dynamical map analysis fail to recognise non-Markov behaviour.

Perturbative approach to Markovian open quantum systems

Perturbation theory (PT) is a powerful and commonly used tool in the investigation of closed quantum systems. In the context of open quantum systems, PT based on the Markovian quantum master equation is much less developed. The investigation of open systems mostly relies on exact diagonalization of the Liouville superoperator or quantum trajectories. In this approach, the system size is rather limited by current computational capabilities. Analogous to closed-system PT, we develop a PT suitable for open quantum systems. This proposed method is useful in the analytical understanding of open systems as well as in the numerical calculation of system properties, which would otherwise be impractical.

Stochastic Schrödinger Equations for Markovian and non-Markovian cases

Firstly, the Markovian stochastic Schrödinger equations are presented, together with their connections with the theory of measurements in continuous time. Moreover, the stochastic evolution equations are translated into a simulation algorithm, which is illustrated by two concrete examples - the damped harmonic oscillator and a two-level atom with homodyne photodetection. Then, we consider how to introduce memory effects in the stochastic Schrödinger equation via coloured noise. Specifically, the approach by using the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process is illustrated and a simulation for the non-Markovian process proposed. Finally, an analytical approximation technique is tested with the help of the stochastic simulation in a model of a dissipative qubit.

Quantum trajectories: memory and continuous observation

Starting from a generalization of the quantum trajectory theory (based on the stochastic Schrödinger equation - SSE), non-Markovian models of quantum dynamics are derived. In order to describe non-Markovian effects, the approach used in this article is based on the introduction of random coefficients in the usual linear SSE. A major interest is that this allows to develop a consistent theory of quantum measurement in continuous time for these non-Markovian quantum trajectory models. In this context, the notions of instrument, a priori and a posteriori states are rigorously described. The key point is that by starting from a stochastic equation on the Hilbert space of the system, we are able to respect the complete positivity of the mean dynamics for the statistical operator and the requirements of the axioms of quantum measurement theory. The flexibility of the theory is next illustrated by a concrete physical model of a noisy oscillator where non Markovian effects come from random environment, coloured noises, randomness in the stimulating light, delay effects. The statistics of the emitted photons and the heterodyne and homodyne spectra are studied and we show how these quantities are sensible to the non-Markovian features of the system dynamics, so that, in principle, the observation and analysis of the fluorescence light could reveal the presence of non-Markovian effects and allow for a measure of the spectra of the noises affecting the system dynamics.

Parametrizations of density matrices

This article gives a brief overview of some recent progress in the characterization and parametrization of density matrices of finite dimensional systems. We discuss in some detail the Bloch-vector and Jarlskog parametrizations and mention briefly the coset parametrization. As applications of the Bloch parametrization we discuss the trace invariants for the case of time dependent Hamiltonians and in some detail the dynamics of three-level systems. Furthermore, the Bloch vector of two-qubit systems as well as the use of the polarization operator basis is indicated. As the main application of the Jarlskog parametrization we construct density matrices for composite systems. In addition, some recent related articles are mentioned without further discussion.

Stochastic Schrödinger equations and memory

By starting from the stochastic Schrödinger equation and quantum trajectory theory, we introduce memory effects by considering stochastic adapted coefficients. As an example of a natural non-Markovian extension of the theory of white noise quantum trajectories we use an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck coloured noise as the output driving process. Under certain conditions a random Hamiltonian evolution is recovered. Moreover, we show that our non-Markovian stochastic Schrödinger equations unravel some master equations with memory kernels.
