Quartic anomalous couplings at LEP

The search for quartic anomalous gauge couplings at LEP requires appropriate predictions for the radiative processes e+ e- \to ν\barνγγ, e+ e- \to q\bar{q}γγand e+ e- \to 4 fermions+γ. Matrix elements are exactly computed at the tree level, and the effects of anomalous couplings and initial-state radiation are included. Comparisons with results and approximations existing in the literature are shown and commented. Improved versions of the event generators NUNUGPV and WRAP are made available for experimental analysis.

Non Abelian Gauge Couplings in Four Fermion Processes at LEP

The LEP data on four fermion processes are presently used to study the non abelian gauge couplings of the Standard Model. The present theoretical error for two classes of processes, single-W production and radiative four fermion final states, is discussed according to the results of the four fermion working group of the LEP2 Monte Carlo Workshop held at CERN.

Two-Fermion Production in Electron-Positron Collisions

This report summarizes the results of the two-fermion working group of the LEP2-MC workshop, held at CERN from 1999 to 2000. Recent developments in the theoretical calculations of the two fermion production process in the electron-positron collision at LEP2 center of the mass energies are reported. The Bhabha process and the production of muon, tau, neutrino and quark pairs is covered. On the basis of comparison of various calculations, theoretical uncertainties are estimated and compared with those needed for the final LEP2 data analysis. The subjects for the further studies are identified.

Four-Fermion Production in Electron-Positron Collisions

This report summarises the results of the four-fermion working group of the LEP2-MC workshop, held at CERN from 1999 to 2000. Recent developments in the calculation of four-fermion processes in electron-positron collisions at LEP-2 centre-of-mass energies are presented, concentrating on predictions for four main reactions: W-pair production, visible photons in four-fermion events, single-W production and Z-pair production. Based on a comparison of results derived within different approaches, theoretical uncertainties on these predictions are established.

Electroweak Physics in Six-Fermion Processes at Future Colliders

Recent developments in the field of complete electroweak tree-level calculations for six-fermion final states in e+ e- collisions are briefly reviewed. Particular attention is given to top-quark and Higgs boson physics, which are items of primary importance at the Next Linear Collider. The relevance of electroweak backgrounds and finite-width effects is discussed, showing the importance of complete calculations for precision studies at the colliders operating in the TeV energy range.

Higher-order QED corrections to single-W production in electron-positron collisions

Four-fermion processes with a particle lost in the beam pipe are studied at LEP to perform precision tests of the electroweak theory. Leading higher-order QED corrections to such processes are analyzed within the framework of the Structure Functions (SF) approach. The energy scale entering the QED SF is determined by inspection of the soft and collinear limit of the O(alpha) radiative corrections to the four-fermion final states, paying particular attention to the process of single-W production. Numerical predictions are shown in realistic situations for LEP experiments and compared with existing results. A Monte Carlo event generator, including exact tree-level matrix elements, vacuum polarization, higher-order leading QED corrections and anomalous trilinear gauge couplings, is presented.

Large-angle Bhabha scattering and luminosity at flavour factories

The luminosity determination of electron-positron colliders operating in the region of low-lying hadronic resonances (E_cm ~ 1-10 GeV), such as BEPC/BES, DAPHNE, KEKB, PEP-II and VEPP-2M, requires the precision calculation of the Bhabha process at large scattering angles. In order to achieve a theoretical accuracy at a few 0.1% level, the inclusion of radiative corrections is mandatory. The phenomenologically relevant effect of QED corrections is taken into account in the framework of the Parton Shower (PS) method, which is employed both for cross section calculation and event generation. To test the reliability of the approach, a benchmark calculation, including exact O(alpha) corrections and higher-order leading logarithmic contributions, is developed as well and compared in detail with the PS predictions. The effect of O(alpha) next-to-leading and higher-order leading corrections is investigated in the presence of realistic event selections for the Bhabha process at the Phi-factories. A new Monte Carlo generator for data analysis (BABAYAGA) is presented, with an estimated accuracy of 0.5%. Possible developments aiming at improving its precision and range of applicability are discussed.

Large-angle Bhabha scattering and luminosity at Daphne

The accurate knowledge of luminosity at e^+ e^- flavour factories requires the precision calculation of the Bhabha cross section at large scattering angles. In order to achieve a theoretical accuracy at the 0.1% level, the relevant effect of QED radiative corrections is taken into account in the framework of the Parton Shower method, which allows exclusive event generation. On this scheme, a Monte Carlo event generator (BABAYAGA) is developed for data analysis. To test the reliability of the approach, a benchmark calculation, including exact O(alpha) corrections and higher-order leading logarithmic contributions, is developed as well, implemented in a Monte Carlo integrator (LABSPV) and compared in detail with the BABAYAGA predictions. The effect of initial-state and final-state radiation, O(alpha) next-to-leading and higher-order leading corrections is investigated and discussed in the presence of realistic event selections. The theoretical precision of BABAYAGA is estimated to be at the 0.5% level.

Electroweak physics in six-fermion final states at future e+e- colliders

Three studies on six-fermion production processes are presented, in which the production of an intermediate-mass Higgs boson, the top-quark physics and the analysis of possible anomalous quartic gauge couplings are considered. A Monte Carlo event generator has been developed for full electroweak tree-level calculations on six-fermion processes at the Linear Collider. The Monte Carlo procedure has been adapted to deal with a large variety of diagram topologies, so as to keep under control the relevant signals and all the backgrounds of such processes. The effects of initial-state-radiation and beamstrahlung are also taken into account. The relevance of electroweak backgrounds and finite-width effects is discussed and several analyses of final-state distributions are presented, both for the detection of the signals of interest and for the study of properties of the particles involved, thus showing the importance of complete calculations for precision studies at the Linear Collider.

Top-quark physics in six-quark final states at the Next Linear Collider

The processes of six-quark production with one $b\bar b$ pair are studied by means of a complete tree-level electroweak calculation. The top-quark signal is examined: the importance of electroweak backgrounds, of the order of 10% above the $t\bar t$ threshold and of about 30% of the purely electroweak signal at threshold, is further stressed by studying the dependence of the cross-section at threshold on the Higgs mass in the range between 100 GeV and 185 GeV, and finding variations of the order of 10%. In the study of some event-shape variables, a strong effect of initial-state radiation is found, in particular for the thrust distribution, which is studied for several centre-of-mass energies at the TeV scale. The effectiveness of cuts on the thrust for isolating QCD backgrounds, as pointed out by some authors, is confirmed also in the presence of electroweak backgrounds and initial-state radiation.

Light-Pair Corrections to Small-Angle Bhabha Scattering in a Realistic Set-up at LEP

Light-pair corrections to small-angle Bhabha scattering have been computed in a realistic set-up for luminosity measurements at LEP. The effect of acollinearity and acoplanarity rejection criteria has been carefully analysed for typical calorimetric event selections. The magnitude of the correction, depending on the details of the considered set-up, is comparable with the present experimental error.

Six-fermion production and Higgs boson physics at future $e^+ e^-$ colliders

The six-fermion production processes $e^+e^-\to q\bar q l^+ l^-ν\barν$, with all the lepton flavours and $q=u,d,c,s$, relevant to the study of the intermediate-mass Higgs boson at future $e^+e^-$ linear colliders, are analysed. A Monte Carlo program, taking into account the whole set of tree-level scattering amplitudes and the relevant radiative effects, is developed to provide integrated cross sections and generation of unweighted events. The complete calculation is compared with the available results of real Higgs production, and the opportunities of precision studies with event generation are discussed, demonstrating the relevance of a full six-fermion calculation. Numerical results for integrated cross sections with various kinematical cuts and including radiative effects are given and commented. In the analysis of event samples, several distributions are studied and found to be sensitive to the presence and to the properties of the Higgs boson.

Light Pair Correction to Bhabha Scattering at Small Angle

This work deals with the computation of electron pair correction to small angle Bhabha scattering, in order to contribute to the improvement of luminometry precision at LEP/SLC below 0.1% theoretical accuracy. The exact QED four-fermion matrix element for $e^+e^-\to e^+e^-e^+e^-$, including all diagrams and mass terms, is computed and different Feynman graph topologies are studied to quantify the error of approximate calculations present in the literature. Several numerical results, obtained by a Monte Carlo program with full matrix element, initial-state radiation via collinear structure functions, and realistic event selections, are shown and critically compared with the existing ones. The present calculation, together with recent progress in the sector of $O(α^2)$ purely photonic corrections, contributes to achieve a total theoretical error in luminometry at the 0.05% level, close to the current experimental precision and important in view of the final analysis of the electroweak precision data.

Single- and multi-photon final states with missing energy at e+e- colliders

The search for new physics in single- and multi-photon final states with large missing energy at LEP and future e^+ e^- colliders requires precise predictions for the Standard Model irreducible background. While at LEP1 the theoretical situation is under control, going to LEP2 (and beyond) some improvements are necessary. To approach the aimed $O(1%)$ theoretical accuracy, the tree-level matrix elements for the processes $e^+ e^- \to ν\barνnγ$, with n=1,2,3, are exactly computed in the Standard Model, including the possibility of anomalous couplings for single-photon production. Due to the presence of observed photons in the final state, particular attention is paid to the treatment of higher-order QED corrections. Comparisons with existing calculations are shown and commented. An improved version of the event generator NUNUGPV is presented.

Rising Bosonic Electroweak Virtual Effects at High Energy e+e- Colliders

The virtual massive gauge boson effects on several observables in the process of charged fermion pairs production at $e^+e^-$ colliders are computed up to the TeV energy range in the Standard Model, working in the ``$Z$-peak subtracted'' representation. It is shown that these effects increase regularly with energy, approaching the typical ten percent relative size. A careful numerical evaluation is proposed, where the conditions dictated by gauge invariance are consistently implemented.

TOPAZ0 4.0 - A new version of a computer program for evaluation of de-convoluted and realistic observables at LEP 1 and LEP 2

The program TOPAZ0 was developed for computing a variety of physical observables which are related to the e+e- annihilation into fermion pairs and to the large angle Bhabha scattering around the Z resonance. Among them, the Z parameters or pseudo-observables, the de-convoluted cross sections and those dressed with QED radiation, and finally the forward-backward asymmetries. The calculations are performed both for a completely inclusive experimental set-up and for a realistic one, i.e. a set-up with cuts on the acollinearity angle, on the energy of the outgoing fermions or on their invariant mass and angular acceptance. The new version, 4.0, includes several innovative features. First of all, the most important new capabilities since previous versions are recently computed electroweak and QCD correction factors that are relevant at the Z resonance in the light of the present experimental accuracy. Among them, the effect of the next-to-leading O(alpha^2 m_t^2) corrections and those radiative corrections to the hadronic decay of the Z which provide complete corrections of O(alpha alpha_s) to Gamma(Z --> q\bar{q}) with q=u,d,s,c and b. Secondly, the program has been upgraded to cover two-fermion final states at LEP 2 energies, where some of the assumptions made for earlier versions are no longer valid. In particular, to this aim all the electroweak radiative corrections that are negligible at the Z peak, but relevant far from it, have been added for s-channel processes, e.g. purely weak boxes, next-to-leading O(alpha^2) and leading O(alpha^3) QED corrections.
