On the interaction between the island divertor heat fluxes, the scrape-off layer radial electric field and the edge turbulence in Wendelstein 7-X plasmas

The formation of the radial electric field, $E_{\rm r}$ in the SOL has been experimentally studied for attached divertor conditions in stellarator W7-X. The main objective of this study is to test the validity in a complex 3D island divertor of simple models, typically developed in tokamaks, relating $E_{\rm r}$ to the sheath potential drop gradient at the target. Additionally, we investigate the effect of the edge $E_{\rm r}$ shear on the reduction of density fluctuation amplitude, a well-established phenomenon according to the existing bibliography. The main diagnostic for measurements in the SOL is a V-band Doppler reflectometer that can provide the measurement of the $E_{\rm r}$ and density fluctuations with good spatial resolution. Three-dimensional measurements of divertor parameters has been carried out using infrared cameras, with $\lambda_{\rm q}$ resulting a suitable proxy for the model-relevant $\lambda_{\rm T}$. In the investigated attached regimes, it is shown for the first time that the formation of the $E_{\rm r}$ in the SOL depends on parameters at the divertor, following a $E_{\rm r} \propto T_{\rm e} /\lambda_q$ qualitatively similar to that found in a tokamak. Then, from the analyzed plasmas, the observed $E_{\rm r}$ shear at the edge is linked to a moderate local reduction of the amplitude of density fluctuations.

Observation of thermal events on the plasma facing components of Wendelstein 7-X

Long pulse operation of present and future magnetic fusion devices requires sophisticated methods for protection of plasma facing components from overheating. Typically, thermographic systems are being used to fulfill this task. Steady state operation requires, however, autonomous operation of the system and fully automatic detection of abnormal events. At Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), a large advanced stellarator, which aims at demonstrating the capabilities of the stellarator line as a future fusion power plant, significant efforts are being undertaken to develop a fully automatic system based on thermographic diagnostics. In October 2018, the first divertor-based experimental campaign has been finished. One of the goals of this operation phase (named OP1.2) was to study the capabilities of the island divertor concept using an uncooled test divertor made of fine-grain graphite tiles. Throughout this campaign, it was possible to test the infrared imaging diagnostic system, which will be used to protect the actively water-cooled plasma facing components (PFCs) during the steady-state operation in the next experimental campaign. An overview of the most relevant thermal events on the PFCs that were detected in OP1.2 using this system are presented. This includes events that limited operation during the campaign, like baffe hot spots and divertor overloads, events that are potentially critical in steady state operation like leading edges, events caused by the ECRH and NBI heating systems and other events which are a common source of false alarms like surface layers. The detected thermal events are now part of an important and extensive image database which will be used to further automate the system by means of computer vision and machine learning techniques in preparation for steady-state operation, when the system must be able to detect dangerous events and protect the machine in real-time.

Validating the ASCOT modelling of NBI fast ions in Wendelstein 7-X stellarator

The first fast ion experiments in Wendelstein 7-X were performed in 2018. They are one of the first steps in demonstrating the optimised fast ion confinement of the stellarator. The fast ions were produced with a neutral beam injection (NBI) system and detected with infrared cameras (IR), a fast ion loss detector (FILD), fast ion charge exchange spectroscopy (FIDA), and post-mortem analysis of plasma facing components. The fast ion distribution function in the plasma and at the wall is being modelled with the ASCOT suite of codes. They calculate the ionisation of the injected neutrals and the consecutive slowing down process of the fast ions. The primary output of the code is the multidimensional fast ion distribution function within the plasma and the distribution of particle hit locations and velocities on the wall. Synthetic measurements based on ASCOT output are compared to experimental results to assess the validity of the modelling. This contribution presents an overview of the various fast ion measurements in 2018 and the current modelling status. The validation and data-analysis is on-going, but the wall load IR modelling already yield results that match with the experiments.

Validating fast-ion wall-load IR analysis-methods against W7-X NBI empty-torus experiment

The first neutral beam injection (NBI) experiments in Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator were conducted in the summer of 2018. The NBI system is used to heat the magnetically confined plasma by neutralising an accelerated hydrogen ion beam and directing it into the plasma, where the resulting energetic ions release their energy to heat the plasma. The modelling of the NBI fast ion experiments has commenced, including estimation of the shine-through and the orbit-losses. The stellarator has a wide-angle infra red (IR) imaging system to monitor the machine plasma facing component surface temperatures. This work validates the NBI model "Beamlet Based NBI (BBNBI)" and the newly written synthetic IR camera model. The validation is accomplished by comparing the measured and the synthetic IR camera measurements of an experiment where the NBI was injected into the vacuum vessel without a plasma. A good qualitative and quantitative match was found. This agreement is further supported by spectroscopic and calibration measurements of the NBI and and IR camera systems.

Natural units, numbers and numerical clusters

Defined by Lord Kelvin as the science of measurement it is described a fundamental fact of physics. The so called `natural' units represent the unique system of units conveniently used in the realm of High Energy Physics. The system of natural units is defined by the consistent providing of the adimensional unit value to the velocity c of the eletromagnetic radiation in the vacuum, related to the Maxwell classical electromagnetic theory and to the special relativity theory, to the reduced Planck constant $\hbar\equiv\frac{h}{2π}$ having the dimension of action, which is the fundamental constant of the quantum mechanics as well as to the Boltzmann constant $k_B$ which has the dimension of heat capacity, being the fundamental constant associated to the statistical mechanics, $c=\hbar = k_B = 1$. Such prescription is mandatory as we investigate the ultimate constituents of matter and their dynamics, since the atoms, leptons and quarks up to the grand unification, strings, superstrings, and the supergravity theories, as well as the total unification of the interactions in the M-theory. The one-dimensional character of this phenomenology is totally featured by the use of the natural units, reflecting the fact that in order to be possible the investigation of the fundamental constituents of matter it is being necessary the resolution of lengths of the order of $10^{-16} cm$ or to reach energies of the order of at least 1 TeV. The application of this system of natural units results exceptionally adequate in the description of the Universe since the Planck scale, up to the Hubble large scale expanding Universe, resulting in the curious formation of the regular numerical clusters.

Cosmological constant and spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking: the particle physics and cosmology interface charade

We describe one of the remarkable problems of theoretical physics persevering up to the beginning of the millennium. All gaugetheories with spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking from the standard model of particle physics with the electroweak symmetry breaking at the Fermi scale, 246 GeV, up to strings, supergravity, and the M(embrane)-theory superunification with symmetry breaking starting near the Planck scale, $10^{19}$ GeV, foresee that the spontaneous symmetry breakings induce a vacuum energy at least 50 orders of magnitude larger than the stringent experimental bound $GΛ\lesssim 10^{-122}$ on the value of the cosmological constant $Λ$. This fact seems to have a universal character since it occurs from the Fermi scale up to the Planck one. It is the vacuum catastrophe.

On the color simple group from chiral electroweak gauge groups

Following the pioneering Okubo scrutiny of gauge simple groups for the quantum chromodynamics we show the constraints coming from the wondrous predictive leptoquark-bilepton flavordynamics connecting the number of color charges to solution of the flavor question and to an electric charge quantization unconstrained from the Dirac, Majorana or Dirac--Majorana character of massive neutrino.

Minimal extended flavor groups, matter fields chiral representations, and the flavor question

We show the specific unusual features on chiral gauge anomalies cancellation in the minimal, necessarily 3-3-1, and the largest 3-4-1 weak isospin chiral gauge semisimple group leptoquark-bilepton extensions of the 3-2-1 conventional standard model of nuclear and electromagnetic interactions. In such models a natural explanation for the fundamental question of fermion generation replication arises from the self-consistency of a local gauge quantum field theory, which constrains the number of the QFD fermion families to the QCD color charges.

Charge quantization in the largest leptoquark-bilepton chiral electroweak scheme

The uniqueness of the hypercharge assignments in the three fermion families leptoquark-bilepton $SU(3)_C \times SU(4)_L \times U(1)_N$ model is established. Although the gauge group contains an explicit U(1) factor, freedom from triangle anomalies combined with the requirement of nonvanishing charged fermion masses uniquely fix the electric charges of all fermions independently of the neutrinos being massless or not. The electric-charge quantization, family replication, and the existence of three colors are interwoven.

Charged right-handed currents in the leptoquark-bilepton flavordynamics chiral models

Flavordynamics chiral models of leptoquark fermions and bilepton gauge bosons with masses up to about 1 TeV, although coincident at low energy with the standard model, address the question of fermion mass hyerarchy and explain the flavor question. The presence of charged right-handed weak currents coupled to bileptons, which we point out herein, is another remarkable feature of these chiral theories.

Constraints on free parameters of the simplest bilepton gauge model from the neutral kaon system mass difference

We consider the contributions of the exotic quarks and gauge bosons to the mass difference between the short- and the long-lived neutral kaon states in $SU(3)_C \times SU(3)_L \times U(1)_N$ model. The lower bound $M_{Z'} \sim$ 14 TeV is obtained for the extra neutral gauge boson ${Z'}^0$. Ranges for values of one of the exotic quark masses and quark mixing parameters are also presented.

Majoron emitting neutrinoless double beta decay in the electroweak chiral gauge extensions

Fundamental mechanisms for Majoron emitting neutrinoless double beta decay in SU(3)_C x G_W x U(1) models, for electroweak flavor chiral extensions, G_W = SU(3)_L and SU(4)_L are pointed out. Both kinds of known Majoron emitting processes, charged Majoron emitting where the massless Nambu-Goldstone boson itself carries lepton charge, $L=-2$, and the ordinary Majoron emitting where the boson has a small mass are found possible. A vanishing cosmological constant in elementary particle theory

The quest of a vanishing cosmological constant is considered in the simplest anomaly-free chiral gauge extension of the electroweak standard model where the new physics is limited to a well defined additional flavordynamics above the Fermi scale, namely up to a few TeVs by matching the gauge coupling constants at the electroweak scale, and with an extended scalarland. In contrast to the electroweak standard model, it is shown how the extended scalar sector of the theory allows a vanishing or a very small cosmological constant. The details of the cancellation mechanism are presented. At accessible energies the theory is indistinguishable from the standard model of elementary particles and it is in agreement with all existing data.

Neutrinos and Electromagnetic Gauge Invariance

It is discussed a recently proposed connection among U(1)$_{\rm em}$ electromagnetic gauge invariance and the nature of the neutrino mass terms in the framework of $\mbox {SU(3)}_C\otimes G_W \otimes {\mbox U(1)}_N$, $G_W$ = SU(3)$_L$, extensions of the Standard Model. The impossibility of that connection, also in the extended case $G_W $ = SU(4)$_L$, is demonstrated.

Stars of WIMPs

A class of boson-fermion stars, whose spin-0 and spin-1/2 constituents interact through a U(1) current-current term in the Lagrangian density, is analysed. It is shown that it describes the low-energy behavior of a system of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) from the leptonic sector of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. In this case the effective coupling constant $λ$ is related to the Fermi constant $G_F$.

Radiatively induced electron and electron-neutrino masses

We consider, in the context of a 331 model with a single neutral right-handed singlet, the generation of lepton masses. At zeroth order two neutrinos and one charged lepton are massless, while the other leptons, two neutrinos and two charged leptons, are massive. However the charged ones are still mass degenerate. The massless fields get a mass through radiative corrections which also break the degeneracy in the charged leptons.
