Simple obstructions and cone reduction

Let $X$ be a Deligne-Mumford stack locally of finite type over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero. We show that the intrinsic normal cone $C_X$ of $X$ is supported in the subcone $\mathbb{V}(\Omega_X[-1])$ ($h^1/h^0((\Omega^1_X)^\vee)$) of its intrinsic normal sheaf $N_X$. This leads to an alternative proof of cone reduction by cosections for $C_X$. We also discuss vanishing of simple obstructions under the Buchweitz-Flenner semiregularity map for sheaves.

Virtual classes of $\mathbb{G}_\text{m}$-gerbes

We show that a perfect obstruction theory for a $\mathbb{G}_\text{m}$-gerbe determines a semi-perfect obstruction theory for its base, which is perfect if the gerbe is quasi-compact and affine-pointed. These results streamline the construction of a semi-perfect obstruction theory for the base, and allow us to relate virtual classes of the gerbe and its base.

A product formula for log Gromov-Witten invariants

The purpose of this short article is to prove a product formula relating the log Gromov-Witten invariants of $V \times W$ with those of $V$ and $W$ in the case the log structure on $V$ is trivial.

Virtual pullbacks in $K$-theory

We consider virtual pullbacks in $K$-theory, and show that they are bivariant classes and satisfy certain functoriality. As applications to $K$-theoretic counting invariants, we include proofs of a virtual localization formula for schemes and a degeneration formula in Donaldson-Thomas theory.

A remark on virtual pushforward properties in Gromov-Witten theory

We approach Gathmann's virtual pushforward property from the perspective of bivariant intersection theory, extend a virtual pushforward result of Manolache, and use our extension to deduce a result of Gathmann relating relative and rubber GW invariants of a $P^1$ bundle with invariants of its base.

Invariance of quantum rings under ordinary flops: III

The paper is Part III of our ongoing project to study a case of Crepant Transformation Conjecture: K-equivalence Conjecture for ordinary flops. In this paper we prove the invariance of quantum rings for general ordinary flops, whose local models are certain non-split toric bundles over arbitrary smooth base. An essential ingredient in the proof is a quantum splitting principle, which reduces a statement in Gromov--Witten theory on non-split bundles to the case of split bundles.

Engineering the Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in Graphene with Uniaxial Strains

We theoretically investigate the manipulation of the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in graphene by means of the uniaxial strain. The values of Chern number and Hall conductance demonstrate that the strained graphene in presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and exchange field, for vanishing intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, possesses non-trivial topological phase which is robust against the direction and modulus of the strain. Besides, we also find that the interplay between Rashba and intrinsic spin-orbit couplings results in a topological phase transition in the strained graphene. Remarkably, as the strain strength is increased beyond approximately 7%, the critical parameters of the exchange field for triggering the quantum anomalous Hall phase transition show distinct behaviors - decrease (increase) for strains along zigzag (armchair) direction. Our findings open up a new platform for manipulation of the QAHE by an experimentally accessible strain deformation of the graphene structure, with promising application on novel quantum electronic devices with high energy efficiency performance.

Self Assembled II-VI Magnetic Quantum Dot as a Voltage-Controlled Spin-Filter

A key element in the emergence of a full spintronics technology is the development of voltage controlled spin filters to selectively inject carriers of desired spin into semiconductors. We previously demonstrated a prototype of such a device using a II-VI dilute-magnetic semiconductor quantum well which, however, still required an external magnetic field to generate the level splitting. Recent theory suggests that spin selection may be achievable in II-VI paramagnetic semiconductors without external magnetic field through local carrier mediated ferromagnetic interactions. We present the first experimental observation of such an effect using non-magnetic CdSe self-assembled quantum dots in a paramagnetic (Zn,Be,Mn)Se barrier.
