Measuring heavy neutrino couplings at the LHC

The existence of heavy neutrinos mediating neutrino masses via a type-I seesaw can be directly probed at the LHC, or indirectly in rare lepton flavor-violating processes. The synergy between these two approaches requires a direct measurement of the heavy neutrino couplings. We discuss a strategy to perform such measurements at the LHC in the context of left-right symmetric models, which is also applicable to other models implementing a type-I or type-III seesaw. We demonstrate that the ambiguities in the determination of the heavy neutrino mixing parameters can be resolved by performing an exclusive analysis of dilepton final states, discriminated by flavor and missing energy.

Leptonic CP violation

Several topics on CP violation in the lepton sector are reviewed. A few theoretical aspects concerning neutrino masses, leptonic mixing, and CP violation will be covered, with special emphasis on seesaw models. A discussion is provided on observable effects which are manifest in the presence of CP violation, particularly, in neutrino oscillations and neutrinoless double beta decay processes, and their possible implications in collider experiments such as the LHC. The role that leptonic CP violation may have played in the generation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe through the mechanism of leptogenesis is also discussed.

A_4-based neutrino masses with Majoron decaying dark matter

We propose an A_4 flavor-symmetric SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) seesaw model where lepton number is broken spontaneously. A consistent two-zero texture pattern of neutrino masses and mixing emerges from the interplay of type-I and type-II seesaw contributions, with important phenomenological predictions. We show that, if the Majoron becomes massive, such seesaw scenario provides a viable candidate for decaying dark matter, consistent with cosmic microwave background lifetime constraints that follow from current WMAP observations. We also calculate the sub-leading one-loop-induced decay into photons which leads to a mono-energetic emission line that may be observed in future X-ray missions such as Xenia.

Running effects on neutrino parameters and l_i -> l_j gamma predictions in the triplet-extended MSSM

We investigate the renormalisation group effects induced on neutrino mass and mixing parameters in a triplet-extended minimal supersymmetric standard model where a vector-like pair of hypercharge $\pm 1$ triplet superfields is added. We first rederive the one-loop renormalisation group equation for the effective neutrino mass operator and, for the case in which this operator originates solely from the decoupling of the triplets, the corresponding equations for neutrino masses, mixing parameters and CP-violating phases. We compare our results with the ones obtained previously, and quantify the importance of the RG induced corrections to neutrino observables by means of numerical examples. In the second part of the paper, we study the correlation of the model's predictions for the lepton flavour violating processes $\ell_i \rightarrow \ell_j γ$ with the measured neutrino mass squared differences and mixing angles. We also emphasize the rôle played by the unknown reactor neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and the Dirac CP-violating phase $δ$. We point out that, if $\tanβ$ is large, the results obtained in the commonly made approximations may deviate significantly from the ones following from solving numerically the relevant set of renormalisation group equations and using the exact one-loop formulae for the decay rates.

Lepton flavour violation in the supersymmetric type-II seesaw mechanism

We summarize the predictions for the radiative decays l_j->l_i γwithin the context of the supersymmetric type II seesaw mechanism considering universal boundary conditions for the soft SUSY breaking terms. The dependence on the low-energy neutrino parameters is discussed and the deviations from the analytical results for large $\tanβ$ analyzed.

Flavour physics of leptons and dipole moments

This chapter of the report of the ``Flavour in the era of the LHC'' Workshop discusses the theoretical, phenomenological and experimental issues related to flavour phenomena in the charged lepton sector and in flavour-conserving CP-violating processes. We review the current experimental limits and the main theoretical models for the flavour structure of fundamental particles. We analyze the phenomenological consequences of the available data, setting constraints on explicit models beyond the Standard Model, presenting benchmarks for the discovery potential of forthcoming measurements both at the LHC and at low energy, and exploring options for possible future experiments.

Observable Electron EDM and Leptogenesis

In the context of the minimal supersymmetric seesaw model, the CP-violating neutrino Yukawa couplings might induce an electron EDM. The same interactions may also be responsible for the generation of the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe via leptogenesis. We identify in a model-independent way those patterns within the seesaw models which predict an electron EDM at a level probed by planned laboratory experiments and show that negative searches on τ-> e γdecay may provide the strongest upper bound on the electron EDM. We also conclude that a possible future detection of the electron EDM is incompatible with thermal leptogenesis, even when flavour effects are accounted for.

A new bridge between leptonic CP violation and leptogenesis

Flavor effects due to lepton interactions in the early Universe may have played an important role in the generation of the cosmological baryon asymmetry through leptogenesis. If the only source of high-energy CP violation comes from the left-handed leptonic sector, then it is possible to establish a bridge between flavored leptogenesis and low-energy leptonic CP violation. We explore this connection taking into account our present knowledge about low-energy neutrino parameters and the matter-antimatter asymmetry observed in the Universe. In this framework, we find that leptogenesis favors a hierarchical light neutrino mass spectrum, while for quasi-degenerate and inverted hierarchical neutrino masses there is a very narrow allowed window. The absolute neutrino mass scale turns out to be m < 0.1 eV.

Neutrinos, leptonic CP violation and the origin of matter

I review some aspects related with the connections between neutrino physics and the thermal leptogenesis mechanism for the generation of the cosmological baryon asymmetry of the Universe. A special attention is devoted to the problem of establishing a bridge between leptonic CP violation at low and high energies.

Enlarging the window for radiative leptogenesis

We investigate the scenario of resonant thermal leptogenesis, in which the leptonic asymmetries are generated through renormalization group corrections induced at the leptogenesis scale. In the framework of the standard model extended by three right-handed heavy Majorana neutrinos with masses M1 = M2 << M3 at some high scale, we show that the mass splitting and CP-violating effects induced by renormalization group corrections can lead to values of the CP asymmetries large enough for a successful leptogenesis. In this scenario, the low-energy neutrino oscillation data can also be easily accommodated. The possibility of having an underlying symmetry behind the degeneracy in the right-handed neutrino mass spectrum is also discussed.

Radiative leptogenesis in minimal seesaw models

In the framework of seesaw models with only two heavy Majorana neutrinos, nonzero leptonic asymmetries can be radiatively generated when exact heavy neutrino mass degeneracy ($M_1=M_2=M$) is imposed at a scale $Λ_D > M$. For a specific case, we show that an acceptable value for the baryon asymmetry of the Universe can be obtained considering thermal leptogenesis.

Radiatively induced leptogenesis in a minimal seesaw model

We study the possibility that the baryon asymmetry of the universe is generated in a minimal seesaw scenario where two right-handed Majorana neutrinos with degenerate masses are added to the standard model particle content. In the usual framework of thermal leptogenesis, a nonzero $CP$ asymmetry can be obtained through the mass splitting induced by the running of the heavy Majorana neutrino masses from their degeneracy scale down to the seesaw scale. Although, in the light of the present neutrino oscillation data, the produced baryon asymmetry turns out to be smaller than the experimental value, the present mechanism could be viable in simple extensions of the standard model.

Neutrino Masses, Mixing and New Physics Effects

We introduce a parametrization of the effects of radiative corrections from new physics on the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices, studying how several relevant quantities describing the pattern of neutrino masses and mixing are affected by these corrections. We find that the ratio omega = sin theta / tan theta_atm is remarkably stable, even when relatively large corrections are added to the original mass matrices. It is also found that if the lightest neutrino has a mass around 0.3 eV, the pattern of masses and mixings is considerably more stable under perturbations than for a lighter or heavier spectrum. We explore the consequences of perturbations on some flavor relations given in the literature. In addition, for a quasi-degenerate neutrino spectrum it is shown that: (i) starting from a bi-maximal mixing scenario, the corrections to the mass matrices keep tan theta_atm very close to unity while they can lower tan theta_sol to its measured value; (ii) beginning from a scenario with a vanishing Dirac phase, corrections can induce a Dirac phase large enough to yield CP violation observable in neutrino oscillations.

Neutrino masses from beta decays after KamLAND and WMAP (Updated including the NC enhanced SNO data)

The first data released by the KamLAND collaboration have confirmed the strong evidence in favour of the LMA solution of the solar neutrino problem. Taking into account the ranges for the oscillation parameters allowed by the global analysis of the solar, CHOOZ and KamLAND data, we update the limits on the neutrinoless double beta decay effective neutrino mass parameter and analyze the impact of all the available data from neutrinoless double beta decay experiments on the neutrino mass bounds, in view of the latest WMAP results. For the normal neutrino mass spectrum the range (0.05-0.23) eV is obtained for the lightest neutrino mass if one takes into account the Heidelberg-Moscow evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay and the cosmological bound. It is also shown that under the same conditions the mass of the lightest neutrino may not be bounded from below if the spectrum is of the inverted type. Finnaly, we discuss how future experiments can improve the present bounds on the lightest neutrino mass set by the Troitsk, Mainz and WMAP results. In the addendum we update the allowed ranges for the effective Majorana neutrino mass parameter in view of the latest NC enhanced SNO data.

Removing Ambiguities in the Neutrino Mass Matrix

We suggest that the weak-basis independent condition det(M_nu)=0 for the effective neutrino mass matrix can be used in order to remove the ambiguities in the reconstruction of the neutrino mass matrix from input data available from present and future feasible experiments. In this framework, we study the full reconstruction of M_nu with special emphasis on the correlation between the Majorana CP-violating phase and the various mixing angles. The impact of the recent KamLAND results on the effective neutrino mass parameter is also briefly discussed.

Minimal Scenarios for Leptogenesis and CP Violation

The relation between leptogenesis and CP violation at low energies is analyzed in detail in the framework of the minimal seesaw mechanism. Working, without loss of generality, in a weak basis where both the charged lepton and the right-handed Majorana mass matrices are diagonal and real, we consider a convenient generic parametrization of the Dirac neutrino Yukawa coupling matrix and identify the necessary condition which has to be satisfied in order to establish a direct link between leptogenesis and CP violation at low energies. In the context of the LMA solution of the solar neutrino problem, we present minimal scenarios which allow for the full determination of the cosmological baryon asymmetry and the strength of CP violation in neutrino oscillations. Some specific realizations of these minimal scenarios are considered. The question of the relative sign between the baryon asymmetry and CP violation at low energies is also discussed.

Leptogenesis, CP violation and neutrino data: What can we learn?

A detailed analytic and numerical study of baryogenesis through leptogenesis is performed in the framework of the standard model of electroweak interactions extended by the addition of three right-handed neutrinos, leading to the seesaw mechanism. We analyze the connection between GUT-motivated relations for the quark and lepton mass matrices and the possibility of obtaining a viable leptogenesis scenario. In particular, we analyze whether the constraints imposed by SO(10) GUTs can be compatible with all the available solar, atmospheric and reactor neutrino data and, simultaneously, be capable of producing the required baryon asymmetry via the leptogenesis mechanism. It is found that the Just-So^2 and SMA solar solutions lead to a viable leptogenesis even for the simplest SO(10) GUT, while the LMA, LOW and VO solar solutions would require a different hierarchy for the Dirac neutrino masses in order to generate the observed baryon asymmetry. Some implications on CP violation at low energies and on neutrinoless double beta decay are also considered.

Is right-handed neutrino degeneracy compatible with the solar and atmospheric neutrino data?

In light of the recent solar and atmospheric neutrino data, we investigate the possibility of having an exactly degenerate spectrum for heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos at the grand unification scale. The analysis is performed in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with unbroken R-parity and extended with three heavy Majorana neutrino fields in order to implement the seesaw mechanism. In the absence of a Dirac-type leptonic mixing, the only source of lepton flavour violation is the right-handed neutrino sector. Inspired by GUT-motivated relations among the quark, charged-lepton and Dirac neutrino Yukawa coupling matrices, and after the inclusion of the radiative effects, we determine the effective neutrino mass matrix at the electroweak scale. Using then the latest global analyses of the solar and atmospheric data at 99% C.L., we conclude that, within this framework, the only solar solutions compatible with the experimental data are the LOW and LMA solutions, being the latter the most favoured one. At 90% C.L., only the LMA solution is allowed.
