Deformed Coordinate-Space Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov Approach to Weakly Bound Nuclei and Large Deformations

The coordinate space formulation of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) method enables self-consistent treatment of mean-field and pairing in weakly bound systems whose properties are affected by the particle continuum space. Of particular interest are neutron-rich, deformed drip-line nuclei which can exhibit novel properties associated with neutron skin. To describe such systems theoretically, we developed an accurate 2D lattice Skyrme-HFB solver {\hfbax} based on B-splines. Compared to previous implementations, we made a number of improvements aimed at boosting the solver's performance. These include: explicit imposition of axiality and space inversion, use of the modified Broyden's method to solve self-consistent equations, and a partial parallelization of the code. {\hfbax} has been benchmarked against other HFB solvers, both spherical and deformed, and the accuracy of the B-spline expansion was tested by employing the multiresolution wavelet method. Illustrative calculations are carried out for stable and weakly bound nuclei at spherical and very deformed shapes, including constrained fission pathways. In addition to providing new physics insights, {\hfbax} can serve as a useful tool to assess the reliability and applicability of coordinate-space and configuration-space HFB solvers, both existing and in development.

Helium-cluster decay widths of molecular states in beryllium and carbon isotopes

The $α$ particle and $^6$He emissions from possible molecular states in beryllium and carbon isotopes have been studied using a mean-field-type cluster potential. Calculations can reproduce well the $α$-decay widths of excited states in $^{8}$Be, $^{12}$C and $^{20}$Ne. For the nucleus $^{10}$Be, we discussed the $α$-decay widths with different shapes or decay modes, in order to understand the very different decay widths of two excited states. The widths of $^{6}$He decay from $^{12}$Be and $α$ decays from $^{13,14}$C are predicted, which could be useful for future experiments.

Modern shell-model diagonalizations with realistic NN forces

The spectral and statistical properties of nuclei $^{46}$V and $^{48}$Cr are studied in the framework of nuclear shell model. A microscopical effective Hamiltonian derived from the CD-Bonn \textit{NN} potential is employed. The calculations are preliminary results of a newly developed parallel shell-model code. Calculations with the realistic \textit{NN} interaction reproduce well the ground-state rotational band and backbending phenomenon in $^{48}$Cr. A sudden alignment of all particles is seen above the backbend. The nearest-neighbour spacing distribution in $^{46}$V is presented and compared with the predictions of random-matrix theory. Significant deviation from the single Gaussian-orthogonal-ensemble distribution is obtained, indicating that the isospin-symmetry breaking is not so strong in the nucleus.

Shell-model study of mirror nuclei with modern charge-dependent \textit{NN} potential

The properties of $T=1/2$ mirror nuclei in the $fp$ shell have been studied with a microscopic residual interaction. The isospin-nonconserving interaction is derived from a high-precision charge-dependent Bonn \textit{NN} potential using the folded-diagram renormalization method. The level structures of the nuclei are calculated, obtaining excellent agreements with experimental observations till the $0f_{7/2}$ band termination. The role played by isospin symmetry breaking on ground-state displacement energies and mirror energy differences is discussed, which may help to explain the long-standing Nolen-Schiffer anomaly. Electromagnetic and weak transition properties are presented, with discussions on the asymmetry in analogous transitions.

Shell-model study of spectroscopies and isospin structures in odd-odd $N=Z$ nuclei employing realistic \emph{NN} potentials

The structures of odd-odd $N=Z$ nuclei in the lower \emph{fp} shell have been investigated with a new isospin-nonconserving microscopical interaction. The interaction is derived from a high-precision charge-dependent Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential using the folded-diagram renormalization method. Excellent agreements with experimental data have been obtained up to band terminations. Particularly, the relative positions of T=0 and T=1 bands were well reproduced. Calculations with another interaction obtained from the Idaho-A chiral potential showed similar results. Our calculations also give a good description of the existence of high-spin isomeric states in the $0f_{7/2}$ sub-shell. As examples, the spectroscopies and isospin structures of $^{46}$V and $^{50}$Mn have been discussed in detail, with the useful predictions of level structures including electromagnetic properties. Results for $^{50}$Mn were analyzed where experimental observations are still insufficient.

Various cluster radioactivities above magic nuclei

We present parameter-free tunneling calculations for various cluster radioactivities including the diproton decays of atomic nuclei. An uniform folded cluster potential has been suggested that is based on a self-consistent mean-field model, with the folding factor determined using the quantization conditions of the quasibound cluster state. We have investigated the $α$-particle and heavier-cluster decays of trans-$^{100}$Sn and trans-$^{208}$Pb nuclei, and the observed diproton emission from the proton drip-line nucleus $^{16}$Ne, showing the overall reasonable descriptions of cluster radioactivities with calculated half-lives agreeing well with experimental data. We have also predicted the properties of yet unobserved cluster decays of the exotic nuclei $^{112,114}$Ba, $^{104}$Te and $^{38}$Ti.

Density distributions of superheavy nuclei

We employed the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model to investigate the density distributions and their dependence on nuclear shapes and isospins in the superheavy mass region. Different Skyrme forces were used for the calculations with a special comparison to the experimental data in $^{208}$Pb. The ground-state deformations, nuclear radii, neutron skin thicknesses and $α$-decay energies were also calculated. Density distributions were discussed with the calculations of single-particle wavefunctions and shell fillings. Calculations show that deformations have considerable effects on the density distributions, with a detailed discussion on the $^{292}$120 nucleus. Earlier predictions of remarkably low central density are not supported when deformation is allowed for.

Enhanced Stability of Superheavy Nuclei due to High-Spin Isomerism

Configuration-constrained calculations of potential-energy surfaces in even-even superheavy nuclei reveal systematically the existence at low excitation energies of multi-quasiparticle states with deformed axially symmetric shapes and large angular momenta. These results indicate the prevalence of long-lived, multi-quasiparticle isomers. In a quantal system, the ground state is usually more stable than the excited states. In contrast, in superheavy nuclei the multi-qausiparticle excitations decrease the probability for both fission and $α$ decay, implying enhanced stability. Hence, the systematic occurrence of multi-qausiparticle isomers may become crucial for future production and study of even heavier nuclei. The energies of multi-quasiparticle states and their $α$ decays are calculated and compared to available data.

Quadrupole Pairing Interaction and Signature Inversion

The signature inversion in the πh11/2 \otimes νh11/2 rotational bands of odd-odd Cs and La isotopes and the πh11/2 \otimes νi13/2 bands of odd-odd Tb, Ho and Tm nuclei is investigated using pairing and deformation self consistent mean field calculations. The model can rather satisfactorily account for the anomalous signature splitting, provided that spin assignments in som of the bands are revised. Our calculations show that signature inversioncan appear already at axially symmetric shapes. It is found that this is due to the contribution of the λμ=22 component of the quadrupole pairing interaction to the mean field potential.

Shape and blocking effects on odd-even mass differences and rotational motion of nuclei

Nuclear shapes and odd-nucleon blockings strongly influence the odd-even differences of nuclear masses. When such effects are taken into account, the determination of the pairing strength is modified resulting in larger pair gaps. The modified pairing strength leads to an improved self-consistent description of moments of inertia and backbending frequencies, with no additional parameters.
