Identification of non-linear behavior models with restricted or redundant data

This study presents a new strategy for the identification of material parameters in the case of restricted or redundant data, based on a hybrid approach combining a genetic algorithm and the Levenberg-Marquardt method. The proposed methodology consists essentially in a statistically based topological analysis of the search domain, after this one has been reduced by the analysis of the parameters ranges. This is used to identify the parameters of a model representing the behavior of damaged elastic, visco-elastic, plastic and visco-plastic composite laminates. Optimization of the experimental tests on tubular samples leads to the selective identification of these parameters.

Diphoton resonance at e+e- and photon colliders

In this note, I will review the opportunities offered by the hint of a new resonance observed at LHC for future e+e- TeV linear collider (LC) projects. This discussion is mainly influenced by two specific scenarios of physics which assume either a (pseudo-)scalar or a tensor resonance, but these estimates can be used in most scenarios. I envisage either a photon collider, which has a guaranteed signal with the LHC observation, or a standard e+e- collider, more straightforward to implement. After a detailed study of the heavy graviton scenario, I conclude that at a TeV LC, high accuracy measurements, including rare modes, allow to unambiguously establish the origin of this resonance. Also envisaged in some detail is a radion scenario which illustrates the production of a scalar. The role of an LC for precision measurements on Higgs and top couplings is recalled in the context of the Randall Sundrum model.

Top physics at high-energy lepton colliders

A summary is presented of the workshop "top physics at linear colliders" that was held at IFIC Valencia from the 30th of June to the 3rd July 2015. We present an up-to-date status report of studies into the potential for top quark physics of lepton colliders with an energy reach that exceeds the top quark pair production threshold, with a focus on the linear collider projects ILC and CLIC. This summary shows that such projects can offer very competitive determinations of top quark properties (mass, width) and its interactions with other Standard Model particles, in particular electroweak gauge bosons and the Higgs boson. In both areas the prospects exceed the LHC potential significantly - often by an order of magnitude.

Resistive Plate Chamber Digitization in a Hadronic Shower Environment

The CALICE Semi-Digital Hadron Calorimeter (SDHCAL) technological prototype is a sampling calorimeter using Glass Resistive Plate Chamber detectors with a three-threshold readout as the active medium. This technology is one of the two options proposed for the hadron calorimeter of the International Large Detector for the International Linear Collider. The prototype was exposed to beams of muons, electrons and pions of different energies at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. To be able to study the performance of such a calorimeter in future experiments it is important to ensure reliable simulation of its response. In this paper we present our prototype simulation performed with GEANT4 and the digitization procedure achieved with an algorithm called SimDigital. A detailed description of this algorithm is given and the methods to determinate its parameters using muon tracks and electromagnetic showers are explained. The comparison with hadronic shower data shows a good agreement up to 50 GeV. Discrepancies are observed at higher energies. The reasons for these differences are investigated.

First results of the CALICE SDHCAL technological prototype

The CALICE Semi-Digital Hadronic Calorimeter (SDHCAL) prototype, built in 2011, was exposed to beams of hadrons, electrons and muons in two short periods in 2012 on two different beam lines of the CERN SPS. The prototype with its 48 active layers, made of Glass Resistive Plate Chambers and their embedded readout electronics, was run in triggerless and power-pulsing mode. The performance of the SDHCAL during the test beam was found to be very satisfactory with an efficiency exceeding 90% for almost all of the 48 active layers. A linear response (within 5%) and a good energy resolution are obtained for a large range of hadronic energies (5-80GeV) by applying appropriate calibration coefficients to the collected data for both the Digital (Binary) and the Semi-Digital (Multi-threshold) modes of the SDHCAL prototype. The Semi-Digital mode shows better performance at energies exceeding 30GeV

DHCAL with Minimal Absorber: Measurements with Positrons

In special tests, the active layers of the CALICE Digital Hadron Calorimeter prototype, the DHCAL, were exposed to low energy particle beams, without being interleaved by absorber plates. The thickness of each layer corresponded approximately to 0.29 radiation lengths or 0.034 nuclear interaction lengths, defined mostly by the copper and steel skins of the detector cassettes. This paper reports on measurements performed with this device in the Fermilab test beam with positrons in the energy range of 1 to 10 GeV. The measurements are compared to simulations based on GEANT4 and a standalone program to emulate the detailed response of the active elements.

A precise characterisation of the top quark electro-weak vertices at the ILC

Top quark production in the process $e^+e^- \to t\bar{t}$ at a future linear electron positron collider with polarised beams is a powerful tool to determine indirectly the scale of new physics. The presented study, based on a detailed simulation of the ILD detector concept, assumes a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=500\,$GeV and a luminosity of $\mathcal{L}=500\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ equally shared between the incoming beam polarisations of $\mathcal{P}_{e^-}, \mathcal{P}_{e^+} =\pm0.8,\mp0.3$. Events are selected in which the top pair decays semi-leptonically and the cross sections and the forward-backward asymmetries are determined. Based on these results, the vector, axial vector and tensorial $CP$ conserving couplings are extracted separately for the photon and the $Z^0$ component. With the expected precision, a large number of models in which the top quark acts as a messenger to new physics can be distinguished with many standard deviations. This will dramatically improve expectations from e.g. the LHC for electro-weak couplings of the top quark.

The small binary asteroid (939) Isberga

In understanding the composition and internal structure of asteroids, their density is perhaps the most diagnostic quantity. We aim here to characterize the surface composition, mutual orbit, size, mass, and density of the small main-belt binary asteroid (939) Isberga. For that, we conduct a suite of multi-technique observations, including optical lightcurves over many epochs, near-infrared spectroscopy, and interferometry in the thermal infrared. We develop a simple geometric model of binary systems to analyze the interferometric data in combination with the results of the lightcurve modeling. From spectroscopy, we classify Ibserga as a Sq-type asteroid, consistent with the albedo of 0.14$^{+0.09}_{-0.06}$ (all uncertainties are reported as 3-$σ$ range) we determine (average albedo of S-types is 0.197 $\pm$ 0.153, Pravec et al., 2012, Icarus 221, 365-387). Lightcurve analysis reveals that the mutual orbit has a period of 26.6304 $\pm$ 0.0001 h, is close to circular, and has pole coordinates within 7 deg. of (225, +86) in ECJ2000, implying a low obliquity of 1.5 deg. The combined analysis of lightcurves and interferometric data allows us to determine the dimension of the system and we find volume-equivalent diameters of 12.4$^{+2.5}_{-1.2}$ km and 3.6$^{+0.7}_{-0.3}$ km for Isberga and its satellite, circling each other on a 33 km wide orbit. Their density is assumed equal and found to be $2.91^{+1.72}_{-2.01}$ g.cm$^{-3}$, lower than that of the associated ordinary chondrite meteorites, suggesting the presence of some macroporosity, but typical of S-types of the same size range (Carry, 2012, P\&SS 73, 98-118). The present study is the first direct measurement of the size of a small main-belt binary. Although the interferometric observations of Isberga are at the edge of MIDI capabilities, the method described here is applicable to others suites of instruments (e.g, LBT, ALMA).

A precise determination of top quark electro-weak couplings at the ILC operating at $\roots=500\,\GeV$

Top quark production in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow t\bar{t}$ at a future linear electron positron collider with polarised beams is a powerful tool to determine indirectly the scale of new physics. The presented study, based on a detailed simulation of the ILD detector concept, assumes a centre-of-mass energy of $\roots=500$\,GeV and a luminosity of $\mathcal{L}=500\,\invfb$ equality shared between the incoming beam polarisations of $P_{e^{-,+}} =\pm0.8,\mp0.3$. Events are selected in which the top pair decays semi-leptonically. The study comprises the cross sections, the forward-backward asymmetry and the slope of the helicity angle asymmetry. The vector, axial vector and tensorial CP conserving couplings are separately determined for the photon and the $Z^0$ component. The sensitivity to new physics would be dramatically improved with respect to what is expected from LHC for electroweak couplings.

HZ Recoil Mass and Cross Section Analysis in ILD

This note describes the details of a simulation study of the Higgs boson production for processes in which the Higgs is produced together with a well measurable di-lepton system using the proposal of the ILD detector for its Letter of Intent. The analysis is optimised for the measurement of the Higgs-strahlung process, i.e. e+e- -> HZ. The cross section can be determined with a precision of 2-3% and by combining the decay channels a precision of ~30 MeV is obtained for the mass of the Higgs boson. The background can be largely reduced and the analysis exhibits a sensitivity to the configuration of the accelerator.

Forward-backward asymmetries of the bottom and top quarks in warped extra-dimensional models: LHC predictions from the LEP and Tevatron anomalies

Within the paradigm of warped extra dimensions, third generation quarks are expected to be the most sensitive to effects beyond the Standard Model. The anomalies observed at the LEP and Tevatron colliders in the forward-backward asymmetries of the bottom (A_FB^b) and top (A_FB^t) quarks can thus be seen as early signatures of warped extra-dimensional scenarios. We propose a realization of such a scenario, with a gauge custodial symmetry in the bulk, which allows to address simultaneously the A_FB^b anomaly and the discrepancies observed recently on A_FB^t at high top quark rapidities and ttbar invariant masses. We also show that the various phenomenological constraints arising from LEP, Tevatron and LHC can be satisfied within the considered model. The model predicts new features, induced by a Kaluza-Klein excitation of the gluon at a mass ~1.5-2 TeV, in top quark pair production at the 7 TeV LHC.

Design and Electronics Commissioning of the Physics Prototype of a Si-W Electromagnetic Calorimeter for the International Linear Collider

The CALICE collaboration is studying the design of high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters for future International Linear Collider detectors. For the electromagnetic calorimeter, the current baseline choice is a high granularity sampling calorimeter with tungsten as absorber and silicon detectors as sensitive material. A ``physics prototype'' has been constructed, consisting of thirty sensitive layers. Each layer has an active area of 18x18 cm2 and a pad size of 1x1 cm2. The absorber thickness totals 24 radiation lengths. It has been exposed in 2006 and 2007 to electron and hadron beams at the DESY and CERN beam test facilities, using a wide range of beam energies and incidence angles. In this paper, the prototype and the data acquisition chain are described and a summary of the data taken in the 2006 beam tests is presented. The methods used to subtract the pedestals and calibrate the detector are detailed. The signal-over-noise ratio has been measured at 7.63 +/- 0.01. Some electronics features have been observed; these lead to coherent noise and crosstalk between pads, and also crosstalk between sensitive and passive areas. The performance achieved in terms of uniformity and stability is presented.

Computer-assisted access to the kidney

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper is to introduce the principles of computer-assisted access to the kidney. The system provides the surgeon with a pre-operative 3D planning on computed tomography (CT) images. After a rigid registration with space-localized ultrasound (US) data, preoperative planning can be transferred to the intra-operative conditions and an intuitive man-machine interface allows the user to perform a puncture. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Both CT and US images of informed normal volunteer were obtained to perform calculation on the accuracy of registration and punctures were carried out on a kidney phantom to measure the precision of the whole of the system. RESULTS: We carried out millimetric registrations on real data and guidance experiments on a kidney phantom showed encouraging results of 4.7 mm between planned and reached targets. We noticed that the most significant error was related to the needle deflection during the puncture. CONCLUSION: Preliminary results are encouraging. Further work will be undertaken to improve efficiency and accuracy, and to take breathing into account.

Percutaneous renal puncture: requirements and preliminary results

This paper introduces the principles of computer assisted percutaneous renal puncture, that would provide the surgeon with an accurate pre-operative 3D planning on CT images and, after a rigid registration with space-localized echographic data, would help him to perform the puncture through an intuitive 2D/3D interface. The whole development stage relied on both CT and US images of a healthy subject. We carried out millimetric registrations on real data, then guidance experiments on a kidney phantom showed encouraging results.

Dark Matter with (very) heavy SUSY scalars at ILC

In this paper, six SUSY scenarios with heavy sfermions, mainly based on theoretical arguments and on experimental indications for new physics, are defined. These scenarios, consistent with the amount of dark matter (DM) measured by WMAP, are then analysed in detail providing pertinent examples of the potential of ILC. It is shown that in most cases ILC, with its high precision based on the chargino analysis and in spite of an incomplete coverage of the gaugino and slepton mass spectrum, can predict the amount of DM in our universe with an accuracy which matches the WMAP results.

Physics Interplay of the LHC and the ILC

Physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International e+e- Linear Collider (ILC) will be complementary in many respects, as has been demonstrated at previous generations of hadron and lepton colliders. This report addresses the possible interplay between the LHC and ILC in testing the Standard Model and in discovering and determining the origin of new physics. Mutual benefits for the physics programme at both machines can occur both at the level of a combined interpretation of Hadron Collider and Linear Collider data and at the level of combined analyses of the data, where results obtained at one machine can directly influence the way analyses are carried out at the other machine. Topics under study comprise the physics of weak and strong electroweak symmetry breaking, supersymmetric models, new gauge theories, models with extra dimensions, and electroweak and QCD precision physics. The status of the work that has been carried out within the LHC / LC Study Group so far is summarised in this report. Possible topics for future studies are outlined.

Experimental Implications for a Linear Collider of the SUSY Dark Matter Scenario

This paper presents the detection issues for the lightest slepton \tildeτ_1 at a future e^+e^- TeV collider given the dark matter constraints set on the SUSY mass spectrum by the WMAP results. It intends to illustrate the importance of an optimal detection of energetic electrons in the very forward region for an efficient rejection of the γγbackground. The TESLA parameters have been used in the case of head-on collisions and in the case of a 10, mrad half crossing angle.

Present and Future sensitivity to a Z-prime

Various extensions of the Standard Model, i.e. string inspired groups like E_6, extra dimensions, 'deconstruction', predict additional vector bosons. In most cases these bosons can mix with the SM Z and this translates into a very high sensitivity of precision measurements which can be performed at the Z resonance. This aspect will be illustrated using SLD/LEP data and the possible impact on the Higgs boson mass indirect determination. An extrapolation to the accuracies which could be reached at FLC will be discussed. With accuracies available at GigaZ it will become possible to elucidate the origin the Z' and the symmetry breaking mechanism responsible for the mixing. Two examples show the possible impact of FLC on the LHC program.
