Complexity and line of critical points in a short-range spin-glass model

We investigate the critical behavior of a three-dimensional short-range spin glass model in the presence of an external field $\eps$ conjugated to the Edwards-Anderson order parameter. In the mean-field approximation this model is described by the Adam-Gibbs-DiMarzio approach for the glass transition. By Monte Carlo numerical simulations we find indications for the existence of a line of critical points in the plane $(\eps,T)$ which separates two paramagnetic phases and terminates in a critical endpoint. This line of critical points appears due to the large degeneracy of metastable states present in the system (configurational entropy) and is reminiscent of the first-order phase transition present in the mean-field limit. We propose a scenario for the spin-glass transition at $\eps=0$, driven by a spinodal point present above $T_c$, which induces strong metastability through Griffiths singularities effects and induces the absence of a two-step shape relaxation curve characteristic of glasses.

Continuous phase transition in a spin-glass model without time-reversal symmetry

We investigate the phase transition in a strongly disordered short-range three-spin interaction model characterized by the absence of time reversal symmetry in the Hamiltonian. In the mean-field limit the model is well described by the Adam-Gibbs-DiMarzio scenario for the glass transition; however in the short-range case this picture turns out to be modified. The model presents a finite temperature continuous phase transition characterized by a divergent spin-glass susceptibility and a negative specific heat exponent. We expect the nature of the transition in this 3-spin model to be the same as the transition in the Edwards-Anderson model in a magnetic field, with the advantage that the strong crossover effects present in the latter case are absent.

Exactly solvable phase oscillator models with synchronization dynamics

Populations of phase oscillators interacting globally through a general coupling function $f(x)$ have been considered. In the absence of precessing frequencies and for odd-coupling functions there exists a Lyapunov functional and the probability density evolves toward stable stationary states described by an equilibrium measure. We have then proposed a family of exactly solvable models with singular couplings which synchronize more easily as the coupling becomes less singular. The stationary solutions of the least singular coupling considered, $f(x)=$ sign$(x)$, have been found analytically in terms of elliptic functions. This last case is one of the few non trivial models for synchronization dynamics which can be analytically solved.

A general method to determine replica symmetry breaking transitions

We introduce a new parameter to investigate replica symmetry breaking transitions using finite-size scaling methods. Based on exact equalities initially derived by F. Guerra this parameter is a direct check of the self-averaging character of the spin-glass order parameter. This new parameter can be used to study models with time reversal symmetry but its greatest interest concerns models where this symmetry is absent. We apply the method to long-range and short-range Ising spin glasses with and without magnetic field as well as short-range multispin interaction spin glasses.

A moment based approach to the dynamical solution of the Kuramoto model

We examine the dynamics of the Kuramoto model with a new analytical approach. By defining an appropriate set of moments the dynamical equations can be exactly closed. We discuss some applications of the formalism like the existence of an effective Hamiltonian for the dynamics. We also show how this approach can be used to numerically investigate the dynamical behavior of the model without finite size effects.

Damage spreading in the mode-coupling equations for glasses

We examine the problem of damage spreading in the off-equilibrium mode coupling equations. The study is done for the spherical $p$-spin model introduced by Crisanti, Horner and Sommers. For $p>2$ we show the existence of a temperature transition $T_0$ well above any relevant thermodynamic transition temperature. Above $T_0$ the asymptotic damage decays to zero while below $T_0$ it decays to a finite value independent of the initial damage. This transition is stable in the presence of asymmetry in the interactions. We discuss the physical origin of this peculiar phase transition which occurs as a consequence of the non-linear coupling between the damage and the two-time correlation functions.

Aging in the Linear Harmonic Oscillator

The low temperature Monte Carlo dynamics of an ensemble of linear harmonic oscillators shows some entropic barriers related to the difficulty of finding the directions in configurational space which decrease the energy. This mechanism is enough to observe some typical non-equilibrium features of glassy systems like activated-type behavior and aging in the correlation function and in the response function. Due to the absence of interactions the model only displays a one-step relaxation process.

Langevin dynamics of the Lebowitz-Percus model

We revisit the hard-spheres lattice gas model in the spherical approximation proposed by Lebowitz and Percus (J. L. Lebowitz, J. K. Percus, Phys. Rev.{\ 144} (1966) 251). Although no disorder is present in the model, we find that the short-range dynamical restrictions in the model induce glassy behavior. We examine the off-equilibrium Langevin dynamics of this model and study the relaxation of the density as well as the correlation, response and overlap two-time functions. We find that the relaxation proceeds in two steps as well as absence of anomaly in the response function. By studying the violation of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio we conclude that the glassy scenario of this model corresponds to the dynamics of domain growth in phase ordering kinetics.

Closure of the Monte Carlo dynamical equations in the spherical Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model

We study the analytical solution of the Monte Carlo dynamics in the spherical Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model using the technique of the generating function. Explicit solutions for one-time observables (like the energy) and two-time observables (like the correlation and response function) are obtained. We show that the crucial quantity which governs the dynamics is the acceptance rate. At zero temperature, an adiabatic approximation reveals that the relaxational behavior of the model corresponds to that of a single harmonic oscillator with an effective renormalized mass.

Evidence of a Critical time in Constrained Kinetic Ising models

We study the relaxational dynamics of the one-spin facilitated Ising model introduced by Fredrickson and Andersen. We show the existence of a critical time which separates an initial regime in which the relaxation is exponentially fast and aging is absent from a regime in which relaxation becomes slow and aging effects are present. The presence of this fast exponential process and its associated critical time is in agreement with some recent experimental results on fragile glasses.

Glassy Mean-Field Dynamics of the Backgammon model

In this paper we present an exact study of the relaxation dynamics of the backgammon model. This is a model of a gas of particles in a discrete space which presents glassy phenomena as a result of {\it entropy barriers} in configuration space. The model is simple enough to allow for a complete analytical treatment of the dynamics in infinite dimensions. We first derive a closed equation describing the evolution of the occupation number probabilities, then we generalize the analysis to the study the autocorrelation function. We also consider possible variants of the model which allow to study the effect of energy barriers.

Analytical solution of the Monte Carlo dynamics of a simple spin-glass model

In this note we present an exact solution of the Monte Carlo dynamics of the spherical Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin-glass model. We obtain the dynamical equations for a generalized set of moments which can be exactly closed. Only in a certain particular limit the dynamical equation of the energy coincides with that of the Langevin dynamics.

DYNAMICAL SOLUTION OF A MODEL WITHOUT ENERGY BARRIERS

In this note we study the dynamics of a model recently introduced by one of us, that displays glassy phenomena in absence of energy barriers. Using an adiabatic hypothesis we derive an equation for the evolution of the energy as a function of time that describes extremely well the glassy behaviour observed in Monte Carlo simulations.

Matrix models as solvable glass models

We present a family of solvable models of interacting particles in high dimensionalities without quenched disorder. We show that the models have a glassy regime with aging effects. The interaction is controlled by a parameter $p$. For $p=2$ we obtain matrix models and for $p>2$ `tensor' models. We concentrate on the cases $p=2$ which we study analytically and numerically.

Replica Field Theory for Deterministic Models: Binary Sequences with Low Autocorrelation

We study systems without quenched disorder with a complex landscape, and we use replica symmetry theory to describe them. We discuss the Golay-Bernasconi-Derrida approximation of the low autocorrelation model, and we reconstruct it by using replica calculations. Then we consider the full model, its low $T$ properties (with the help of number theory) and a Hartree-Fock resummation of the high-temperature series. We show that replica theory allows to solve the model in the high $T$ phase. Our solution is based on one-link integral techniques, and is based on substituting a Fourier transform with a generic unitary transformation. We discuss this approach as a powerful tool to describe systems with a complex landscape in the absence of quenched disorder.

Evidence of aging in mean-field spin glass models

We study numerically the out of equilibrium dynamics of the hypercubic cell spin glass in high dimensionalities. We obtain evidence of aging effects qualitatively similar both to experiments and to simulations of low dimensional models. This suggests that the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model as well as other mean-field finite connectivity lattices can be used to study these effects analytically.
