Calorimetric Evidence for Nodes in the Overdoped Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We present low-temperature specific heat of the electron-doped Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, which does not show any indication of an upturn down to 400 mK, the lowest measuring temperature. The lack of a Schottky-like feature at low temperatures or in magnetic fields up to 9 Tesla enables us to identify enhanced low-temperature quasiparticle excitations and to study anisotropy in the linear term of the specific heat. Our results can not be explained by a single or multiple isotropic superconducting gap, but are consistent with multi-gap superconductivity with nodes on at least one Fermi surface sheet.

Anisotropic spin fluctuations and superconductivity in "115'' heavy fermion compounds: 59Co NMR study in PuCoGa5

We report results of $^{59}$Co nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on a single crystal of superconducting PuCoGa5 in its normal state. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates and the Knight shifts as a function of temperature reveal an anisotropy of spin fluctuations with finite wave vector q. By comparison with the isostructural members, we conclude that antiferromagnetic XY-type anisotropy of spin fluctuations plays an important role in mediating superconductivity in these heavy fermion materials.

Effect of annealing on the specific heat of optimally doped Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We report the temperature dependence of the low-temperature specific heat down to 400 mK of the electron-doped Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ superconductors. We have measured two samples extracted from the same batch: first sample has been measured just after preparation with no additional heat treatment. The sample shows $T_{c}$=20 K, residual specific heat $γ_{0}$=3.6 mJ/mol K$^{2}$ and a Schottky-like contribution at low temperatures. A second sample has been annealed at 800 $^{o}C$ for two weeks and shows $T_{c}$ = 25 K and $γ_{0}$=1.4 mJ/mol~K$^{2}$. By subtracting the lattice specific heat, from pure BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, the temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat has been obtained and studied. For both samples the temperature dependence of $C_{el}(T)$ clearly indicate the presence of low-energy excitations in the system. Their specific heat data cannot be described by single clean s- or d-wave models and the data requires an anisotropic gap scenario which may or may not have nodes

Unusual signatures of the ferromagnetic transition in the heavy Fermion compound UMn$_2$Al$_{20}$

Magnetic susceptibility results for single crystals of the new cubic compounds UT$_2$Al$_{20}$ (T=Mn, V, and Mo) are reported. Magnetization, specific heat, resistivity, and neutron diffraction results for a single crystal and neutron diffraction and inelastic spectra for a powder sample are reported for UMn$_2$Al$_{20}$. For T = V and Mo, temperature independent Pauli paramagnetism is observed. For UMn$_2$Al$_{20}$, a ferromagnetic transition is observed in the magnetic susceptibility at $T_c$ = 20 K. The specific heat anomaly at $T_c$ is very weak while no anomaly in the resistivity is seen at $T_c$. We discuss two possible origins for this behavior of UMn$_2$Al$_{20}$: moderately small moment itinerant ferromagnetism, or induced local moment ferromagnetism.

A doping dependent specific heat study of the superconducting gap in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We report a doping, magnetic field and low-temperature dependent study of the specific heat of the iron-arsenide Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ at under (x=0.045), optimal (x=0.08) and overdoped (x=0.103 and 0.105) regimes. By subtracting the lattice specific heat the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the electronic specific heat has been studied. The temperature and field dependencies of the superconducting part of $C_{p}$ exhibit similar behavior for all doping concentrations. The temperature variation of the electronic specific heat as well as its field dependence cannot be described by a single isotropic s-wave gap, pointing to a complex gap structure in the system. The lack of doping dependence indicates that the gap structure does not change significantly as a function of doping. We also observe a significant residual linear term of unknown origin in the specific heat of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ which suggests that inhomogeneity may be an important factor in Co-doped BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$

Kondo behavior, ferromagnetic correlations, and crystal fields in the heavy Fermion compounds Ce3X (X=In, Sn)

We report measurements of inelastic neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and the magnetic field dependence of the specific heat for the heavy Fermion compounds Ce$_3$In and Ce$_3$Sn. The neutron scattering results show that the excited crystal field levels have energies $E_1$ = 13.2 meV, $E_2$ = 44.8 meV for Ce$_3$In and $E_1$ = 18.5 meV, $E_2$ = 36.1 meV for Ce$_3$Sn. The Kondo temperature deduced from the quasielastic linewidth is 17 K for Ce$_3$In and 40 K for Ce$_3$Sn. The low temperature behavior of the specific heat, magnetization, and susceptibility can not be well-described by J=1/2 Kondo physics alone, but require calculations that include contributions from the Kondo effect, broadened crystal fields, and ferromagnetic correlations, all of which are known to be important in these compounds. We find that in Ce$_3$In the ferromagnetic fluctuation makes a 10-15 % contribution to the ground state doublet entropy and magnetization. The large specific heat coefficient $γ$ in this heavy fermion system thus arises more from the ferromagnetic correlations than from the Kondo behavior.

Neutron scattering and scaling behavior in URu2Zn20 and YbFe2Zn20

The dynamic susceptibility chi"(deltaE), measured by inelastic neutron scattering measurements, shows a broad peak centered at Emax = 16.5 meV for the cubic actinide compound URu2Zn20 and 7 meV at the (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) zone boundary for the rare earth counterpart compound YbFe2Zn20. For URu2Zn20, the low temperature susceptibility and magnetic specific heat coefficient gamma = Cmag/T take the values chi = 0.011 emu/mole and gamma = 190 mJ/mole-K2 at T = 2 K. These values are roughly three times smaller, and Emax is three times larger, than recently reported for the related compound UCo2Zn20, so that chi and gamma scale inversely with the characteristic energy for spin fluctuations, Tsf = Emax/kB. While chi(T), Cmag(T), and Emax of the 4f compound YbFe2Zn20 are very well described by the Kondo impurity model, we show that the model works poorly for URu2Zn20 and UCo2Zn20, suggesting that the scaling behavior of the actinide compounds arises from spin fluctuations of itinerant 5f electrons.

Gap structure in the electron-doped Iron-Arsenide Superconductor Ba(Fe0.92Co0.08)2As2: low-temperature specific heat study

We report the field and temperature dependence of the low-temperature specific heat down to 400 mK and in magnetic fields up to 9 T of the electron-doped Ba(Fe0.92Co0.08)2As2 superconductor. Using the phonon specific heat obtained from pure BaFe2As2 we find the normal state Sommerfeld coefficient to be 18 mJ/mol.K^2 and a condensation energy of 1.27 J/mol. The temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat clearly indicate the presence of the low-energy excitations in the system. The magnetic field variation of field-induced specific heat cannot be described by single clean s- or d-wave models. Rather, the data require an anisotropic gap scenario which may or may not have nodes. We discuss the implications of these results.

Field-induced quantum critical point in the pressure-induced superconductor CeRhIn5

When subjected to pressure, the prototypical heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn5 becomes superconducting, forming a broad dome of superconductivity centered around 2.35 GPa (=P2) with maximal Tc of 2.3 K. Above the superconducting dome, the normal state shows strange metallic behaviours, including a divergence in the specific heat and a sub-T-linear electrical resistivity. The discovery of a field-induced magnetic phase that coexists with superconductivity for a range of pressures P < P2 has been interpreted as evidence for a quantum phase transition, which could explain the non-Fermi liquid behavior observed in the normal state. Here we report electrical resistivity measurements of CeRhIn5 under magnetic field at P2, where the resistivity is sub-T-linear for temperatures above Tc (or T_FL) and a T^2-coefficient A found below T_FL diverges as Hc2 is approached. These results are similar to the field-induced quantum critical compound CeCoIn5 and confirm the presence of a quantum critical point in the pressure-induced superconductor CeRhIn5.

The magnetic properties of the Garnet and glass forms of Mn3Al2Si3O12

The magnetic susceptibilities and specific heats of the crystalline garnet and glass forms of Mn3Al2Si3O12 are reported. This allows a direct comparison of the degree of magnetic frustration of the triangle-based garnet lattice and the structurally disordered solid at the same composition for isotropic spin 5/2 Mn^2+ (3d^5). The results show that the glass phase shows more pronounced signs of magnetic frustration than the crystalline phase. Through comparison of the specific heats of Ca3Al2Si3O12 (grossular) and Mn3Al2Si3O12 (spessartine) garnets, information is provided concerning the anomalous extra specific heat in the latter material.

Quantum criticality in layered CeRhIn_{5-x}Sn_x compared with cubic CeIn$_{3-x}Sn_x

We report low-temperature thermal-expansion measurements on single crystals of the {\it layered} heavy fermion system \cri ($0.3\leq x \leq 0.6$) and compare it with a previous study on the related {\it cubic} system \ci [R. Küchler {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 96}, 256403 (2006)]. Both systems display a quantum critical point as proven by a divergent Grüneisen ratio. Most remarkably, the three-dimensional itinerant model explains quantum criticality in {\it both} systems, suggesting that the crystalline anisotropy in \cri is unimportant. This is ascribed to the effect of weak disorder in these doped systems.

Presure-Induced Superconducting State of Antiferromagnetic CaFe$_2$As$_2$

The antiferromagnet CaFe$_2$As$_2$ does not become superconducting when subject to ideal hydrostatic pressure conditions, where crystallographic and magnetic states also are well defined. By measuring electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility under quasi-hydrostatic pressure, however, we find that a substantial volume fraction of the sample is superconducting in a narrow pressure range where collapsed tetragonal and orthorhombic structures coexist. At higher pressures, the collapsed tetragonal structure is stabilized, with the boundary between this structure and the phase of coexisting structures strongly dependent on pressure history. Fluctuations in magnetic degrees of freedom in the phase of coexisting structures appear to be important for superconductivity.

Low-temperature thermal conductivity of BaFe2As2: Parent compound of iron-arsenide superconductors

We report low-temperature thermal conductivity down to 40 mK of the antiferromagnet BaFe$_2$As$_{2}$, which is the parent compound of recently discovered iron-based superconductors. In the investigated temperature range below 4 K, the thermal conductivity $κ$ is well described by the expression $κ$ = $aT$ + $bT^{2.22}$. We attribute the ``$aT$''-term to an electronic contribution which is found to satisfy the Wiedemann-Franz law in the $T$ $\to$ 0 K limit, and the remaining thermal conductivity, $\sim$ $T^{2.22}$, is attributed to phonon conductivity. A small influence on thermal conductivity by magnetic fields up to 8 T is well accounted by the observed magnetoresistance. The result is consistent with a fully gapped magnon spectrum, inferred previously from inelastic neutron scattering measurements.

NMR investigation of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in CaFe$_2$As$_2$ under pressure

We report $^{75}$As NMR measurements in CaFe$_2$As$_2$, made under applied pressures up to 0.83 GPa produced by a standard clamp pressure cell. Our data reveal phase segregation of paramagnetic (PM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases over a range of pressures, with the AFM phase more than 90 % dominant at low temperatures. In situ RF susceptibility measurements indicate the presence of superconductivity. $^{75}$As spin-lattice relaxation experiments indicate that the $^{75}$As nuclei sample the superconductivity while in the magnetically-ordered environment.

Hybridization-driven gap in U3Bi4Ni3: a 209Bi NMR/NQR study

We report 209Bi NMR and NQR measurements on a single crystal of the Kondo insulator U3Bi4Ni3. The 209Bi nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate ($T_1^{-1}$) shows activated behavior and is well-fit by a spin gap of 220 K. The 209Bi Knight shift (K) exhibits a strong temperature dependence arising from 5f electrons, in which K is negative at high temperatures and increases as the temperature is lowered. Below 50 K, K shows a broad maximum and decreases slightly upon further cooling. Our data provide insight into the evolution of the hyperfine fields in a fully gapped Kondo insulator based on 5f electron hybridization.

Superconductivity and the Effects of Pressure and Structure in Single Crystalline SrNi$_2$P$_2$

Heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, NMR, and resistivity of SrNi2P2 single crystals are presented, illustrating a purely structural transition at 325 K with no magnetism. Bulk superconductivity is found at 1.4 K. The magnitude of the transition temperature T_c, fits to the heat capacity data, the small upper critical field $H_{c2}$ = 390 Oe, and Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ$ = 2.1 suggests a conventional fully gapped superconductor. With applied pressure a second structural phase transition occurs which results in an 8% reduction in the c/a ratio of lattice parameters. We find that superconductivity persists into this high pressure phase, although the transition temperature is monotonically suppressed with increasing pressure. Comparison of these Ni-P data as well as layered Fe-As and Ni-As superconductor indicates that reduced dimensionality can be a mechanism for increasing the transition temperature.

Local structure and site occupancy of Cd and Hg substitutions in CeTIn5 (T=Co, Rh, Ir)

The CeTIn5 superconductors (T=Co, Rh, or Ir) have generated great interest due to their relatively Tc's, NFL behavior, and their proximity to AF order and quantum critical points. In contrast to small changes with the T-species, electron doping in CeT(In{1-x}Mx)5 with M=Sn and hole doping with Cd or Hg have a dramatic effect on the electronic properties at very low concentrations. The present work reports EXAFS measurements that address the substituent atom distribution as a function of T, M, and x, near the superconducting phase. Together with previous measurements for M=Sn, the proportion of the M atom residing on the In(1) site, f{In(1)}, increases in the order M=Cd, Sn, and Hg, ranging from about 40% to 70%, showing a strong preference for these substituents to occupy the In(1) site (random=20%). In addition, f{In(1)} ranges from 70% to 100% for M=Hg in the order T=Co, Rh, and Ir. These fractions track the changes in the atomic radii of the various species, and help explain the sharp dependence of Tc on substituting into the In site. However, it is difficult to reconcile the small concentrations of M with the dramatic changes in the ground state in the hole-doped materials with only an impurity scattering model. These results therefore indicate that while such substitutions have interesting local atomic structures with important electronic and magnetic consequences, other local changes in the electronic and magnetic structure are equally important in determining the bulk properties of these materials.

Low-temperature magneto-thermal transport investigation of a Ni-based superconductor BaNi2As2: Evidence for fully gapped superconductivity

We have performed low-temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements of the Ni-based superconductor BaNi$_2$As$_2$ ($T_\mathrm{c}$ = 0.7 K) in magnetic field. In zero field, thermal conductivity shows $T$-linear behavior in the normal state and exhibits a BCS-like exponential decrease below $T_\mathrm{c}$. The field dependence of the residual thermal conductivity extrapolated to zero temperature is indicative of a fully gapped superconductor. This conclusion is supported by the analysis of the specific heat data, which are well fit by the BCS temperature dependence from $T_\mathrm{c}$ down to the lowest temperature of 0.1 K.
