Ultrafast transient response and electron-phonon coupling in the iron-pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2

The transient response of Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2, x=0.08 was studied by pump-probe optical reflectivity. After ultrafast photoexcitation, hot electrons were found to relax with two different characteristic times, indicating the presence of two distinct decay channels: a faster one, of less than 1 ps in the considered pump fluence range, and a slower one, corresponding to lattice thermalization and lasting ~6 ps. Our analysis indicates that the fast relaxation should be attributed to preferential scattering of the electrons with only a subset of the lattice vibration modes, with a second moment of the Eliashberg function lambda(omega^2)~64 meV^2. The simultaneous excitation of a strong fully symmetric A(1g) optical phonon corroborates this conclusion and makes it possible to deduce the value of lambda~0.12. This small value for the electron-phonon coupling confirms that a phonon mediated process cannot be the only mechanism leading to the formation of superconducting pairs in this family of pnictides.

Hole and Electron Contributions to the Transport Properties of Ba(Fe_(1-x)Ru_x)_2As_2 Single Crystals

We report a systematic study of structural and transport properties in single crystals of Ba(Fe_(1-x)Ru_x)_2As_2 for x ranging from 0 to 0.5. The isovalent substitution of Fe by Ru leads to an increase of the a parameter and a decrease of the c parameter, resulting in a strong increase of the AsFeAs angle and a decrease of the As height above the Fe planes. Upon Ru substitution, the magnetic order is progressively suppressed and superconductivity emerges for x > 0.15, with an optimal Tc ~ 20K at x = 0.35 and coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity between these two Ru contents. Moreover, the Hall coefficient RH which is always negative and decreases with temperature in BaFe2As2, is found to increase here with decreasing T and even change sign for x > 0.15. For x_Ru = 0.35, photo-emission studies have shown that the number of holes and electrons are similar with n_e = n_h ~ 0.11, that is twice larger than found in BaFe2As2 [1]. Using this estimate, we find that the transport properties of Ba(Fe_0.65Ru_0.35)_2As_2 can be accounted for by the conventional multiband description for a compensated semi-metal. In particular, our results show that the mobility of holes is strongly enhanced upon Ru addition and overcomes that of electrons at low temperature when x_Ru > 0.15.

Absence of large nanoscale electronic inhomogeneities in the Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 pnictide

75As NMR and susceptiblity were measured in a Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystal for x=6% for various field H values and orientations. The sharpness of the superconducting and magnetic transitions demonstrates a homogeneity of the Co doping x better than +-0.25%. On the nanometer scale, the paramagnetic part of the NMR spectra is found very anisotropic and very narrow for H//ab which allows to rule out the interpretation of Ref.[6] in terms of strong Co induced electronic inhomogeneities. We propose that a distribution of hyperfine couplings and chemical shifts due to the Co effect on its nearest As explains the observed linewidths and relaxations. All these measurements show that Co substitution induces a very homogeneous electronic doping in BaFe2As2, from nano to micrometer lengthscales, on the contrary to the K doping.

Atomic coexistence of superconductivity and incommensurate magnetic order in the Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 pnictide

75As NMR and susceptiblity were measured in a Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystal for x=6%. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectra and relaxation rates allow to show that all Fe sites experience an incommensurate magnetic ordering below T=31K. Comparison with undoped compound allows to estimate a typical moment of 0.05 muB. Anisotropy of the NMR widths can be interpreted using a model of incommensurability with a wavevector (1/2-eps,0,l) with eps of the order of 0.04. Below TC=21.8K, a full volume superconductivity develops as shown by susceptibility and relaxation rate, and magnetic order remains unaffected, demonstrating coexistence of both states on each Fe site.

Hall effect and resistivity study of the magnetic transition, carrier content and Fermi liquid behavior in Ba(Fe(1-x) Cox)2As2

The negative Hall constant R_H measured all over the phase diagram of Ba(Fe(1-x)Cox)2As2 allows us to show that electron carriers always dominate the transport properties. The evolution of R_H with x at low doping (x<2%) indicates that important band structure changes happen for x<2% prior to the emergence of superconductivity. For higher x, an change of the electron concentration with T is required to explain the low T variations of R_H, while the electron scattering rate displays the T^2 law expected for a Fermi liquid. The T=0 residual scattering is affected by Co disorder in the magnetic phase, but is rather dominated by incipient disorder in the paramagnetic state.

Nesting between hole and electron pockets in Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x=0-0.3) observed with angle-resolved photoemission

We present a comprehensive angle-resolved photoemission study of the three-dimensional electronic structure of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. The wide range of dopings covered by this study, x=0 to x=0.3, allows to extract systematic features of the electronic structure. We show that there are three different hole pockets around the G point, the two inner ones being nearly degenerate and rather two dimensional, the outer one presenting a strong three dimensional character. The structure of the electron pockets is clarified by studying high doping contents, where they are enlarged. They are found to be essentially circular and two dimensional. From the size of the pockets, we deduce the number of holes and electrons present at the various dopings. We find that the net number of carriers is in good agreement with the bulk stoichiometry, but that the number of each species (holes and electrons) is smaller than predicted by theory. Finally, we discuss the quality of nesting in the different regions of the phase diagram. The presence of the third hole pocket significantly weakens the nesting at x=0, so that it may not be a crucial ingredient in the formation of the Spin Density Wave. On the other hand, superconductivity seems to be favored by the coexistence of two-dimensional hole and electron pockets of similar sizes.

Disorder, Metal-Insulator crossover and Phase diagram in high-Tc cuprates

We have studied the influence of disorder induced by electron irradiation on the normal state resistivities $ρ(T)$ of optimally and underdoped YBa2CuOx single crystals, using pulsed magnetic fields up to 60T to completely restore the normal state. We evidence that point defect disorder induces low T upturns of rho(T) which saturate in some cases at low T in large applied fields as would be expected for a Kondo-like magnetic response. Moreover the magnitude of the upturns is related to the residual resistivity, that is to the concentration of defects and/or their nanoscale morphology. These upturns are found quantitatively identical to those reported in lower Tc cuprates, which establishes the importance of disorder in these supposedly pure compounds. We therefore propose a realistic phase diagram of the cuprates, including disorder, in which the superconducting state might reach the antiferromagnetic phase in the clean limit.

Irradiation-induced confinement in a quasi-one-dimensional metal

The anisotropic resistivity of PrBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ has been measured as a function of electron irradiation fluence. Localization effects are observed for extremely small amounts of disorder corresponding to electron mean-free-paths of order 100 unit cells. Estimates of the localization corrections suggest that this anomalous localization threshold heralds a crossover to a ground state with pronounced one-dimensional character in which conduction electrons become confined to a small cluster of chains.

Total suppression of superconductivity by high magnetic fields in YBa2 Cu3O6.6

We have studied in fields up to 60T the variation of the transverse magnetoresistance (MR) of underdoped YBCO6.6 crystals either pure or with Tc reduced down to 3.5K by electron irradiation. We evidence that the normal state MR is restored above a threshold field H'c(T), which is found to vanish at T'c>>Tc. In the pure YBCO6.6 sample a 50 Tesla field is already required to completely suppress the superconducting fluctuations at Tc. While disorder does not depress the pseudogap temperature, it reduces drastically the phase coherence established at Tc and weakly H'c(0), T'c and the onset Tnu of the Nernst signal which are more characteristic of the 2D local pairing.

Nernst effect and disorder in the normal state of high-T_{c} cuprates

We have studied the influence of disorder induced by electron irradiation on the Nernst effect in optimally and underdoped YBa2Cu3O(7-d) single crystals. The fluctuation regime above T_{c} expands significantly with disorder, indicating that the T_{c} decrease is partly due to the induced loss of phase coherence. In pure crystals the temperature extension of the Nernst signal is found to be narrow whatever the hole doping, contrary to data reported in the low-T_{c} cuprates families. Our results show that the presence of "intrinsic" disorder can explain the enhanced range of Nernst signal found in the pseudogap phase of the latter compounds.

Respective influences of pair breaking and phase fluctuations in disordered high Tc superconductors

Electron irradiation has been used to introduce point defects in a controlled way in the CuO2 planes of underdoped and optimally doped YBCO. This technique allows us to perform very accurate measurements of Tc and of the residual resistivity in a wide range of defect contents xd down to Tc=0. The Tc decrease does not follow the variation expected from pair breaking theories. The evolutions of Tc and of the transition width with xd emphasize the importance of phase fluctuations, at least for the highly damaged regime. These results open new questions about the evolution of the defect induced Tc depression over the phase diagram of the cuprates

Disorder and transport in cuprates: weak localization and magnetic contributions

We report resistivity measurements in underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.6} $and overdoped Tl$_{2}$Ba$_{2}$CuO$_{6+x}$ single crystals in which the concentration of defects in the CuO$_{2}$ planes is controlled by electron irradiation. Low $T$ upturns of the resistivity are observed in both cases for large defect content. In the Tl compound the decrease of conductivity scales as expected from weak localization theory. On the contrary in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.6}$ the much larger low T contribution to the resistivity is proportional to the defect content and might then be associated to a Kondo like spin flip scattering term. This would be consistent with the results on the magnetic properties induced by spinless defects.

Effect of controlled disorder on quasiparticle thermal transport in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$

Low temperature thermal conductivity, $κ$, of optimally-doped Bi2212 was studied before and after the introduction of point defects by electron irradiation. The amplitude of the linear component of $κ$ remains unchanged, confirming the universal nature of heat transport by zero-energy quasiparticles. The induced decrease in the absolute value of $κ$ at finite temperatures allows us to resolve a nonuniversal term in $κ$ due to conduction by finite-energy quasiparticles. The magnitude of this term provides an estimate of the quasiparticle lifetime at subkelvin temperatures.

Universal Tc depression by irradiation defects in underdoped and overdoped cuprates

We report on a study of the influence of defects introduced in the CuO$_{2}$ planes of cuprates in a wide range of hole dopings n. T$_{c}$ and electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$ measurements have been performed on electron irradiated YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ and Tl$_{2}$Ba$_{2}$CuO$_{6+x}$ single crystals. A universal scaling between the decrease in T$_{c}$ and $\UNICODE[m]{0x394}ρ_{2D}\UNICODE[m]{0xd7}n$, where $\UNICODE[m]{0x394}ρ_{2D}$ is the increase of the 2D-resistance induced by the defects, is found for all the samples investigated here. This demonstrates that n is the relevant parameter to describe the transport properties all over the phase diagram, in contradiction with a recent suggestion of a change in the number of carriers from n to 1-n at the optimal doping. Moreover, the analysis of our data suggests that strong scattering persists on the overdoped side.
