Charge dynamics and "ferromagnetism" of A1-xLaxB6 (A=Ca and Sr)

Ferromagnetism has been reported recently in La-doped alkaline-earth hexaborides, A1-xLaxB6 (A=Ca, Sr, and Ba). We have performed the reflectivity, Hall resistivity, and magnetization measurements of A1-xLaxB6. The results indicate that A1-xLaxB6 can be regarded as a simple doped semimetal, with no signature of an excitonic state as suggested by several theories. It is also found that the surface of as-grown samples (10 micrometer in thickness) has a different electronic structure from a bulk one, and a fairly large number of paramagnetic moments are confined in this region. After eliminating these paramagnetic moments at the surface, we could not find any evidence of an intrinsic ferromagnetic moment in our samples, implying the possibility that the ferromagnetism of A1-xLaxB6 reported so far is neither intrinsic.

Structural Phase Transition in the Superconducting Pyrochlore Oxide Cd2Re2O7

We report a structural phase transition found at Ts = 200 K in a pyrochlore oxide Cd2Re2O7 which shows superconductivity at Tc = 1.0 K. X-ray diffractionexperiments indicate that the phase transition is of the second order, from a high-temperature phase with the ideal cubic pyrochlore structure (space group Fd-3m) to a low-temperature phase with another cubic structure (space group F-43m). It is accompanied by a dramatic change in the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility and thus must induce a significant change in the electronic structure of Cd2Re2O7.

Quasiparticle Density of States of Clean and Dirty s-Wave Superconductors in the Vortex State

The quasiparticle density of states (DOS) in the vortex state has been probed by specific heat measurements under magnetic fields (H) for clean and dirty s-wave superconductors, Y(Ni1-xPtx)2B2C and Nb1-xTaxSe2. We find that the quasiparticle DOS per vortex is appreciably H-dependent in the clean-limit superconductors, while it is H-independent in the dirty superconductors as expected from a conventional rigid normal electron core picture. We discuss possible origins for our observations in terms of the shrinking of the vortex core radius with increasing H.
