Electromagnetic and strong isospin-breaking corrections to the muon $g - 2$ from Lattice QCD+QED

We present a lattice calculation of the leading-order electromagnetic and strong isospin-breaking corrections to the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. We employ the gauge configurations generated by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with $N_f = 2+1+1$ dynamical quarks at three values of the lattice spacing ($a \simeq 0.062, 0.082, 0.089$ fm) with pion masses between $\simeq 210$ and $\simeq 450$ MeV. The results are obtained adopting the RM123 approach in the quenched-QED approximation, which neglects the charges of the sea quarks. Quark disconnected diagrams are not included. After the extrapolations to the physical pion mass and to the continuum and infinite-volume limits the contributions of the light, strange and charm quarks are respectively equal to $δa_μ^{\rm HVP}(ud) = 7.1 ~ (2.5) \cdot 10^{-10}$, $δa_μ^{\rm HVP}(s) = -0.0053 ~ (33) \cdot 10^{-10}$ and $δa_μ^{\rm HVP}(c) = 0.0182 ~ (36) \cdot 10^{-10}$. At leading order in $α_{em}$ and $(m_d - m_u) / Λ_{QCD}$ we obtain $δa_μ^{\rm HVP}(udsc) = 7.1 ~ (2.9) \cdot 10^{-10}$, which is currently the most accurate determination of the isospin-breaking corrections to $a_μ^{\rm HVP}$.

The light-quark contribution to the leading HVP term of the muon $g - 2$ from twisted-mass fermions

We present a lattice calculation of the leading Hadronic Vacuum Polarization (HVP) contribution of the light u- and d-quarks to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_μ^{\rm HVP}(ud)$, adopting the gauge configurations generated by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with $N_f = 2+1+1$ dynamical quarks at three values of the lattice spacing with pion masses in the range 210 - 450 MeV. Thanks to several lattices at fixed values of the light-quark mass and scale but with different sizes we perform a careful investigation of finite-volume effects (FVEs). In order to remove FVEs we develop an analytic representation of the vector correlator, which describes the lattice data for time distances larger than $\simeq 0.2$ fm. The representation is based on quark-hadron duality at small and intermediate time distances and on the two-pion contributions in a finite box at larger time distances. After extrapolation to the physical pion point and to the continuum limit we obtain $a_μ^{\rm HVP}(ud) = 619.0~(17.8) \cdot 10^{-10}$. Adding the contribution of strange and charm quarks, obtained by ETMC, and an estimate of the isospin-breaking corrections and quark-disconnected diagrams from the literature we get $a_μ^{\rm HVP}(udsc) = 683~(19) \cdot 10^{-10}$, which is consistent with recent results based on dispersive analyses of the experimental cross section data for $e^+ e^-$ annihilation into hadrons. Using our analytic representation of the vector correlator, taken at the physical pion mass in the continuum and infinite volume limits, we provide the first eleven moments of the polarization function and we compare them with recent results of the dispersive analysis of the $π^+ π^-$ channels. We estimate also the light-quark contribution to the missing part of $a_μ^{\rm HVP}$ not covered in the MUonE experiment.

First lattice calculation of the QED corrections to leptonic decay rates

The leading-order electromagnetic and strong isospin-breaking corrections to the ratio of $K_{μ2}$ and $π_{μ2}$ decay rates are evaluated for the first time on the lattice, following a method recently proposed. The lattice results are obtained using the gauge ensembles produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ dynamical quarks. Systematics effects are evaluated and the impact of the quenched QED approximation is estimated. Our result for the correction to the tree-level $K_{μ2} / π_{μ2}$ decay ratio is $-1.22\,(16) \%$ to be compared to the estimate $-1.12\,(21) \%$ based on Chiral Perturbation Theory and adopted by the Particle Data Group.

The pion vector form factor from Lattice QCD at the physical point

We present an investigation of the electromagnetic pion form factor, $F_π(Q^2)$, at small values of the four-momentum transfer $Q^2$ ($\lesssim 0.25$ GeV$^2$), based on the gauge configurations generated by European Twisted Mass Collaboration with $N_f = 2$ twisted-mass quarks at maximal twist including a clover term. Momentum is injected using non-periodic boundary conditions and the calculations are carried out at a fixed lattice spacing ($a \simeq 0.09$ fm) and with pion masses equal to its physical value, 240 MeV and 340 MeV. Our data are successfully analyzed using Chiral Perturbation Theory at next-to-leading order in the light-quark mass. For each pion mass two different lattice volumes are used to take care of finite size effects. Our final result for the squared charge radius is $\langle r^2 \rangle_π= 0.443~(29)$ fm$^2$, where the error includes several sources of systematic errors except the uncertainty related to discretization effects. The corresponding value of the SU(2) chiral low-energy constant $\overline{\ell}_6$ is equal to $\overline{\ell}_6 = 16.2 ~ (1.0)$.

Leading isospin-breaking corrections to meson masses on the lattice

We present a study of the isospin-breaking (IB) corrections to pseudoscalar (PS) meson masses using the gauge configurations produced by the ETM Collaboration with $N_f=2+1+1$ dynamical quarks at three lattice spacings varying from 0.089 to 0.062 fm. Our method is based on a combined expansion of the path integral in powers of the small parameters $(\widehat{m}_d - \widehat{m}_u)/Λ_{QCD}$ and $α_{em}$, where $\widehat{m}_f$ is the renormalized quark mass and $α_{em}$ the renormalized fine structure constant. We obtain results for the pion, kaon and $D$-meson mass splitting; for the Dashen's theorem violation parameters $ε_γ(\overline{\mathrm{MS}}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$, $ε_{π^0}$, $ε_{K^0}(\overline{\mathrm{MS}}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$; for the light quark masses $(\widehat{m}_d - \widehat{m}_u)(\overline{\mathrm{MS}}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$, $(\widehat{m}_u / \widehat{m}_d)(\overline{\mathrm{MS}}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$; for the flavour symmetry breaking parameters $R(\overline{\mathrm{MS}}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$ and $Q(\overline{\mathrm{MS}}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$ and for the strong IB effects on the kaon decay constants.

Strange and charm HVP contributions to the muon ($g - 2)$ including QED corrections with twisted-mass fermions

We present a lattice calculation of the Hadronic Vacuum Polarization (HVP) contribution of the strange and charm quarks to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon including leading-order electromagnetic corrections. We employ the gauge configurations generated by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with $N_f = 2+1+1$ dynamical quarks at three values of the lattice spacing ($a \simeq 0.062, 0.082, 0.089$ fm) with pion masses in the range $M_π\simeq 210 - 450$ MeV. The strange and charm quark masses are tuned at their physical values. Neglecting disconnected diagrams and after the extrapolations to the physical pion mass and to the continuum limit we obtain: $a_μ^s(α_{em}^2) = (53.1 \pm 2.5) \cdot 10^{-10}$, $a_μ^s(α_{em}^3) = (-0.018 \pm 0.011) \cdot 10^{-10}$ and $a_μ^c(α_{em}^2) = (14.75 \pm 0.56) \cdot 10^{-10}$, $a_μ^c(α_{em}^3) = (-0.030 \pm 0.013) \cdot 10^{-10}$ for the strange and charm contributions, respectively.

Leading isospin-breaking corrections to pion, kaon and charmed-meson masses with Twisted-Mass fermions

We present a lattice computation of the isospin-breaking corrections to pseudoscalar meson masses using the gauge configurations produced by the European Twisted Mass collaboration with $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ dynamical quarks at three values of the lattice spacing ($a \simeq 0.062, 0.082$ and $0.089$ fm) with pion masses in the range $M_π\simeq 210 - 450$ MeV. The strange and charm quark masses are tuned at their physical values. We adopt the RM123 method based on the combined expansion of the path integral in powers of the $d$- and $u$-quark mass difference ($\widehat{m}_d - \widehat{m}_u$) and of the electromagnetic coupling $α_{em}$. Within the quenched QED approximation, which neglects the effects of the sea-quark charges, and after the extrapolations to the physical pion mass and to the continuum and infinite volume limits, we provide results for the pion, kaon and (for the first time) charmed-meson mass splittings, for the prescription-dependent parameters $ε_{π^0}$, $ε_γ(\overline{MS}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$, $ε_{K^0}(\overline{MS}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$, related to the violations of the Dashen's theorem, and for the light quark mass difference $(\widehat{m}_d - \widehat{m}_u)(\overline{MS}, 2~\mbox{GeV})$.

Finite-Volume QED Corrections to Decay Amplitudes in Lattice QCD

We demonstrate that the leading and next-to-leading finite-volume effects in the evaluation of leptonic decay widths of pseudoscalar mesons at $O(α)$ are universal, i.e. they are independent of the structure of the meson. This is analogous to a similar result for the spectrum but with some fundamental differences, most notably the presence of infrared divergences in decay amplitudes. The leading non-universal, structure-dependent terms are of $O(1/L^2)$ (compared to the $O(1/L^3)$ leading non-universal corrections in the spectrum). We calculate the universal finite-volume effects, which requires an extension of previously developed techniques to include a dependence on an external three-momentum (in our case, the momentum of the final state lepton). The result can be included in the strategy proposed in Ref.\,\cite{Carrasco:2015xwa} for using lattice simulations to compute the decay widths at $O(α)$, with the remaining finite-volume effects starting at order $O(1/L^2)$. The methods developed in this paper can be generalised to other decay processes, most notably to semileptonic decays, and hence open the possibility of a new era in precision flavour physics.

Electromagnetic corrections to the leptonic decay rates of charged pseudoscalar mesons: lattice results

Electromagnetic effects in the leptonic decay rates $π^+ \to μ^+ ν$ and $K^+ \to μ^+ ν$ are evaluated for the first time on the lattice. Following a method recently proposed in Ref. [1] the emission of virtual photons at leading order in the electromagnetic coupling is evaluated on the lattice and the infrared divergence computed for a point-like meson at finite lattice volume is subtracted. The physical decay rate is then obtained by adding the emission of real and virtual photons regularised with a photon mass. Using the gauge ensembles produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ dynamical quarks the feasibility of our approach is demonstrated. Preliminary results for the electromagnetic corrections to charged (neutral) pion and kaon masses as well as to the leptonic decay rates of charged pions and kaons are presented.

Leptonic decay constants fK, fD and fDs with Nf = 2+1+1 twisted-mass lattice QCD

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the pseudoscalar decay constants fK, fD and fDs performed using the gauge configurations produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with Nf = 2 + 1 + 1 dynamical quarks, which include in the sea, besides two light mass degenerate quarks, also the strange and charm quarks with masses close to their values in the real world. The simulations are based on a unitary setup for the two light mass-degenerate quarks and on a mixed action approach for the strange and charm quarks. We use data simulated at three different values of the lattice spacing in the range 0.06 - 0.09 fm and at pion masses in the range 210 - 450 MeV. Our main results are: fK+ / fpi+ = 1.184 (16), fK+ = 154.4 (2.0) MeV, which incorporate the leading strong isospin breaking correction due to the up- and down-quark mass difference, and fK = 155.0 (1.9) MeV, fD = 207.4 (3.8) MeV, fDs = 247.2 (4.1) MeV, fDs / fD = 1.192 (22) and (fDs / fD) / (fK / fpi) = 1.003 (14) obtained in the isospin symmetric limit of QCD. Combined with the experimental measurements of the leptonic decay rates of kaon, pion, D- and Ds-mesons our results lead to the following determination of the CKM matrix elements: |Vus| = 0.2269 (29), |Vcd| = 0.2221 (67) and |Vcs| = 1.014 (24). Using the latest value of |Vud| from superallowed nuclear beta decays the unitarity of the first row of the CKM matrix is fulfilled at the permille level.

Lattice QCD Study of $B$-meson Decay Constants from ETMC

We discuss a lattice QCD computation of the $B$-meson decay constants by the ETM collaboration where suitable ratios allow to reach the bottom quark sector by combining simulations around the charm-quark mass with an exactly known static limit. The different steps involved in this ratio method are discussed together with an account of the assessment of various systematic effects. A comparison of results from simulations with two and four flavour dynamical quarks is presented.

Up, down, strange and charm quark masses with Nf = 2+1+1 twisted mass lattice QCD

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the up, down, strange and charm quark masses performed using the gauge configurations produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with Nf = 2 + 1 + 1 dynamical quarks, which include in the sea, besides two light mass degenerate quarks, also the strange and charm quarks with masses close to their physical values. The simulations are based on a unitary setup for the two light quarks and on a mixed action approach for the strange and charm quarks. The analysis uses data at three values of the lattice spacing and pion masses in the range 210 - 450 MeV, allowing for accurate continuum limit and controlled chiral extrapolation. The quark mass renormalization is carried out non-perturbatively using the RI-MOM method. The results for the quark masses converted to the bar{MS} scheme are: mud(2 GeV) = 3.70(17) MeV, ms(2 GeV) = 99.6(4.3) MeV and mc(mc) = 1.348(46) GeV. We obtain also the quark mass ratios ms/mud = 26.66(32) and mc/ms = 11.62(16). By studying the mass splitting between the neutral and charged kaons and using available lattice results for the electromagnetic contributions, we evaluate mu/md = 0.470(56), leading to mu = 2.36(24) MeV and md = 5.03(26) MeV.

D-Dbar Mixing in the Standard Model and Beyond from Nf=2 Twisted Mass QCD

We present the first unquenched lattice QCD results for the bag parameters controlling the short distance contribution to D meson oscillations in the Standard Model and beyond. We have used the gauge configurations produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with Nf = 2 dynamical quarks, at four lattice spacings and light meson masses in the range 280-500 MeV. Renormalization is carried out non-perturbatively with the RI-MOM method. The bag-parameter results have been used to constrain New Physics effects in D-Dbar mixing, to put a lower bound to the generic New Physics scale and to constrain off-diagonal squark mass terms for TeV-scale Supersymmetry.

B-physics from Nf=2 tmQCD: the Standard Model and beyond

We present a lattice QCD computation of the b-quark mass, the B and B_s decay constants, the B-mixing bag parameters for the full four-fermion operator basis as well as determinations for ξand f_{Bq}\sqrt{B_i^{(q)}} extrapolated to the continuum limit and to the physical pion mass. We used N_f = 2 twisted mass Wilson fermions at four values of the lattice spacing with pion masses ranging from 280 to 500 MeV. Extrapolation in the heavy quark mass from the charm to the bottom quark region has been carried out on ratios of physical quantities computed at nearby quark masses, exploiting the fact that they have an exactly known infinite mass limit. Our results are m_b(m_b, \overline{\rm{MS}})=4.29(12) GeV, f_{Bs}=228(8) MeV, f_{B}=189(8) MeV and f_{Bs}/f_B=1.206(24). Moreover with our results for the bag-parameters we find ξ=1.225(31), B_1^{(s)}/B_1^{(d)}=1.01(2), f_{Bd}\sqrt{\hat{B}_{1}^{(d)}} = 216(10) MeV and f_{Bs}\sqrt{\hat{B}_{1}^{(s)}} = 262(10) MeV. We also computed the bag parameters for the complete basis of the four-fermion operators which are required in beyond the SM theories. By using these results for the bag parameters we are able to provide a refined Unitarity Triangle analysis in the presence of New Physics, improving the bounds coming from B_{(s)}-\bar B_{(s)} mixing.

B decays to radially excited D

We discuss the possibility to measure in present experiments, especially LHCb, the non leptonic decay branching ratio $B \to D' π$, and emphasize phenomenological implications on $B \to D' l ν$ semileptonic decay. We have estimated by lattice QCD the $D'$ decay constant $f_{D'}$ that parameterizes the $D'$ emission contribution to the Class-III non leptonic decay $B^- \to D^0 π^-$. In addition, we provide a new estimate of the decay constants $f_{D_{s,q}}$ which read $f_{D_{s}}=252(3)$ MeV and $f_{D_{s}}/f_{D}=1.23(1)(1)$.

A first look at maximally twisted mass lattice QCD calculations at the physical point

In this contribution, a first look at simulations using maximally twisted mass Wilson fermions at the physical point is presented. A lattice action including clover and twisted mass terms is presented and the Monte Carlo histories of one run with two mass-degenerate flavours at a single lattice spacing are shown. Measurements from the light and heavy-light pseudoscalar sectors are compared to previous $N_f = 2$ results and their phenomenological values. Finally, the strategy for extending simulations to $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ is outlined.
