The Glueball sector of two-flavor Color Superconductivity

We construct the effective Lagrangian describing the light glueballs associated with the unbroken and confining SU(2) color subgroup for the 2 flavor superconductive phase of QCD. This Lagrangian constitutes a key ingredient for understanding the non perturbative physics of 2 flavor color superconductivity. We estimate the two photon decay process of the light glueballs using the saturation of the electromagnetic trace anomaly at the effective Lagrangian level. The present results are particularly relevant to our model of Gamma Ray Bursts based on color superconductivity in Quark Stars (R. Ouyed and F. Sannino astro-ph/0103022).

Electroweak Physics for Color Superconductivity

We construct the effective theories describing the electroweak interactions for the low energy excitations associated with the color superconductive phases of QCD at high matter density. The main result, for the 3 flavor case, is that the quasiparticle Goldstone boson $π^0$ decay into two physical massless photons is identical to the zero density case once we use the new Goldstone decay constant and the modified electric charge $\widetilde{e}=e \cosθ$, with $\tanθ=2e/\sqrt{3}g_s$ and $g_s$ the strong coupling constant. For 2 flavors we find that the coupling of the quarks to the neutral vector boson $Z^0$ is modified with respect to the zero density case. We finally point out possible applications of our result to the physics of compact objects.

Enhanced Global Symmetry Constraints on epsilon Terms

Recently it has been proposed that the physical spectrum of a vector-like gauge field theory may exhibit an enhanced global symmetry near a chiral/conformal phase transition. The new symmetry is related to the possibility, supported by various investigations, that a parity-doubled spectrum develops as the number of fermions Nf is increased to a critical value above which it is expected that the symmetric phase is restored. We show that parity-doubling together with the associated enhanced global symmetry severely constrains the epsilon terms of the effective Lagrangian involving Goldstone bosons as well as massive spin-1 particles. We extend our analysis to underlying fermions in pseudo-real representations of the gauge group.

Low Energy Theory for 2 flavors at High Density QCD

We construct the effective Lagrangian describing the low energy excitations for Quantum Chromodynamics with two flavors at high density. The non-linear realization framework is employed to properly construct the low energy effective theory. The light degrees of freedom, as required by 't Hooft anomaly conditions, contain massless fermions which we properly include in the effective Lagrangian. We also provide a discussion of the linearly realized Lagrangian.

Anomaly Matching in Gauge Theories at Finite Matter Density

We investigate the application of 't Hooft's anomaly matching conditions to gauge theories at finite matter density. We show that the matching conditions constrain the low-energy quasiparticle spectrum associated with possible realizations of global symmetries.

A Note on Anomaly Matching for Finite Density QCD

We note that the QCD phases at large finite density respect 't Hooft anomaly matching conditions. Specifically the spectrum of the light excitations possesses the correct quantum numbers required to obey global anomaly constraints. We argue that 't Hooft constraints can be used at finite density along with non perturbative methods to help selecting the correct phase.

Phases of Chiral Gauge Theories

We discuss the behavior of two non-supersymmetric chiral SU(N) gauge theories, involving fermions in the symmetric and antisymmetric two-index tensor representations respectively. In addition to global anomaly matching, we employ a recently proposed inequality constraint on the number of effective low energy (massless) degrees of freedom of a theory, based on the thermodynamic free energy. Several possible zero temperature phases are consistent with the constraints. A simple picture for the phase structure emerges if these theories choose the phase, consistent with global anomaly matching, that minimizes the massless degree of freedom count defined through the free energy. This idea suggests that confinement with the preservation of the global symmetries through the formation of massless composite fermions is in general not preferred. While our discussion is restricted mainly to bilinear condensate formation, higher dimensional condensates are considered for one case. We conclude by commenting briefly on two related supersymmetric chiral theories.

Enhanced Global Symmetries and The Chiral Phase Transition

We examine the possibility that the physical spectrum of a vector-like gauge field theory exhibits an enhanced global symmetry near a chiral phase transition. A transition from the Goldstone phase to the symmetric phase is expected as the number of fermions N_f is increased to some critical value. Various investigations have suggested that a parity-doubled spectrum develops as the critical value is approached. Using an effective Lagrangian as a guide, we note that parity doubling is associated with the appearance of an enhanced global symmetry in the spectrum of the theory. The enhanced symmetry would develop as the spectrum splits into two sectors, with the first exhibiting the usual pattern of a spontaneously broken chiral symmetry, and the second exhibiting an additional, unbroken symmetry and parity doubling. The first sector includes the Goldstone bosons and other states such as massive scalar partners. The second includes a parity-degenerate vector and axial vector along with other possible parity partners. We note that if such a near-critical theory describes symmetry breaking in the electroweak theory, the additional symmetry suppresses the contribution of the parity doubled sector to the S parameter.

Chiral Phase Transition for SU(N) Gauge Theories via an Effective Lagrangian Approach

We study the chiral phase transition for vector-like SU(N) gauge theories as a function of the number of quark flavors N_f by making use of an anomaly-induced effective potential. We modify an effective potential of a previous work, suggested for N_f < N, and apply it to larger values of N_f where the phase transition is expected to occur. The new effective potential depends explicitly on the full β-function and the anomalous dimension γof the quark mass operator. By using this potential we argue that chiral symmetry is restored for γ<1. A perturbative computation of γthen leads to an estimate of the critical value N_f^c for the transition.

The Physical Spectrum of Conformal SU(N) Gauge Theories

We investigate the physical spectrum of vector-like SU(N) gauge theories with infrared coupling close to but above the critical value for a conformal phase transition. We use dispersion relations, the momentum dependence of the dynamical fermion mass and resonance saturation. We show that the second spectral function sum rule is substantially affected by the continuum contribution, allowing for a reduction of the axial vector - vector mass splitting with respect to QCD-like theories. In technicolor theories, this feature can result in a small or even negative contribution to the electroweak S parameter.

Evidence for a scalar kappa(900) resonance in pi-K scattering

Motivated by the $1/N_c$ expansion, we study a simple model in which the pi-K scattering amplitude is the sum of a current-algebra contact term and resonance pole exchanges. This phenomenological model is crossing symmetric and, when a putative light strange scalar meson, kappa, is included, satisfies the unitarity bounds to well above 1 GeV. The model also features chiral dynamics, vector meson dominance and appropriate interference between the established scalar K*(1430) resonance and its predicted background. We briefly discuss the physical significance of the results and directions for further work.

Higgs Lagrangian from Gauge Theories

We explore a novel way of deriving the effective Higgs Lagrangian from strongly interacting vector-like gauge theories. We consider the N=1 supersymmetric extension of gauge theories and interpret the auxiliary field associated with the low energy effective "meson" superfield as the Higgs field. By introducing an explicit supersymmetry breaking term and computing the one-loop effective action at the effective theory level we show that the kinetic term for the Higgs field is generated, while the negative mass squared term is already present at the tree level. We further propose a scenario by which the complete Higgs potential can be generated and the fermion in the low energy effective theory acquires a mass.

Anomaly induced QCD potential and Quark Decoupling

We explore the anomaly induced effective QCD meson potential in the framework of the effective Lagrangian approach. We suggest a decoupling procedure, when a flavored quark becomes massive, which mimics the one employed by Seiberg for supersymmetric gauge theories. It is seen that, after decoupling, the QCD potential naturally converts to the one with one less flavor. We study the $N_c$ and $N_f$ dependence of the $η^{\prime}$ mass.

Hyperfine Splitting of Low-Lying Heavy Baryons

We calculate the next-to-leading order contribution to the masses of the heavy baryons in the bound state approach for baryons containing a heavy quark. These $1/N_C$ corrections arise when states of good spin and isospin are generated from the background soliton of the light meson fields. Our study is motivated by the previously established result that light vector meson fields are required for this soliton in order to reasonably describe the spectrum of both the light and the heavy baryons. We note that the inclusion of light vector mesons significantly improves the agreement of the predicted hyperfine splitting with experiment. A number of aspects of this somewhat complicated calculation are discussed in detail.

Scaling Behavior in Soliton Models

In the framework of chiral soliton models we study the behavior of static nucleon properties under rescaling of the parameters describing the effective meson theory. In particular we investigate the question of whether the Brown--Rho scaling laws are general features of such models. When going beyond the simple Skyrme model we find that restrictive constraints need to be imposed on the mesonic parameters in order to maintain these scaling laws. Furthermore, in the case when vector mesons are included in the model it turns out that the isoscalar form factor no longer scales according to these laws. Finally we note that, in addition to the exact scaling laws of the model, one may construct approximate {\it local scaling laws}, which depend of the particular choice of Lagrangian parameters.

Exploring $\pp$ scattering in the $\1N$ picture

In the large $N_c$ approximation to $QCD$, the leading $\pp$ scattering amplitude is expressed as the sum of an infinite number of tree diagrams. We investigate the possibility that an adequate approximation at energies up to somewhat more than one $GeV$ can be made by keeping diagrams which involve the exchange of resonances in this energy range in addition to the simplest chiral contact terms. In this approach crossing symmetry is automatic but individual terms tend to drastically violate partial wave unitarity. We first note that the introduction of the $ρ$ meson in a chirally invariant manner substantially delays the onset of drastic unitarity violation which would be present for the {\it current algebra} term alone. This suggests a possibility of local (in energy) cancellation which we then explore in a phenomenological way. We include exchanges of leading resonances up to the $1.3 GeV$ region. However, unitarity requires more structure which we model by a four derivative contact term or by a low lying scalar resonance which is presumably subleading in the $\1N$ expansion, but may nevertheless be important. The latter two flavor model gives a reasonable description of the phase shift $δ^0_0$ up until around $860 MeV$, before the effects associated which the $K\bar{K}$ threshold come into play.
