Correlations between Background Radiation inside a Multilayer Interleaving Structure, Geomagnetic Activity, and Cosmic Radiation: A Fourth Order Cumulant-based Correlation Analysis

In this work, we analyzed time-series of background radiation inside a multilayer interleaving structure, geomagnetic activity and cosmic-ray activity using the Pearson correlation coefficient and a new correlation measure based on the one-dimensional component of the fourth order cumulant. The new method is proposed based on the fact that the cumulant of a random process is zero if it is of Gaussian nature. The results show that this methodology is useful for detecting correlations between the analyzed variables.

An Oscillation Evident in Both Solar Neutrino Data and Radon Decay Data

Analyses of neutrino measurements acquired by the Super-Kamiokande Neutrino Observatory (SK, for the time interval 1996 - 2001) and of radon decay measurements acquired by the Geological Survey of Israel (GSI, for the time interval 2007 - 2017) yield remarkably consistent detections of the same oscillation: frequency 9.43 +/- 0.04 year-1 (SK), 9.44 +/- 0.04 year-1 (GSI); amplitude 6.8 +/- 1.7 % (SK), 7.0 +/- 1.0 % (GSI); phase 124 +/- 15 deg. (SK), 124 +/- 9 deg. (GSI). We briefly discuss possible hypotheses that may be relevant to this experimental result.

Towards non-invasive cancer diagnostics and treatment based on electromagnetic fields, optomechanics and microtubules

In this paper, we discuss biological effects of electromagnetic (EM) fields in the context of cancer biology. In particular, we review the nanomechanical properties of microtubules (MTs), the latter being one of the most successful targets for cancer therapy. We propose an investigation on the coupling of electromagnetic radiation to mechanical vibrations of MTs as an important basis for biological and medical applications. In our opinion optomechanical methods can accurately monitor and control the mechanical properties of isolated MTs in a liquid environment. Consequently, studying nanomechanical properties of MTs may give useful information for future applications to diagnostic and therapeutic technologies involving non-invasive externally applied physical fields. For example, electromagnetic fields or high intensity ultrasound can be used therapeutically avoiding harmful side effects of chemotherapeutic agents or classical radiation therapy.

The Impact Crater Size-Frequency Distribution on Pluto Follows a Truncated Pareto Distribution: Results from a First Data Set Based on the Recent New Horizons' Flyby

Recently it could be shown ( that the impact crater size-frequency distribution of Pluto (based on an analysis of first images obtained by the recent New Horizons flyby) follows a power law alpha = 2.4926 in the interval of diameter (D) values ranging from 3.75 km to the largest determined value of 37.77 km. A reanalysis of this data set revealed that the whole crater SFD (i.e., with values in the interval of 1.2-37.7 km) can be described by a truncated Pareto distribution.
