Determination of the complex microwave photoconductance of a single quantum dot

A small quantum dot containing approximately 20 electrons is realized in a two-dimensional electron system of an AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. Conventional transport and microwave spectroscopy reveal the dot's electronic structure. By applying a coherently coupled two-source technique, we are able to determine the complex microwave induced tunnel current. The amplitude of this photoconductance resolves photon-assisted tunneling (PAT) in the non-linear regime through the ground state and an excited state as well. The out-of-phase component (susceptance) allows to study charge relaxation within the quantum dot on a time scale comparable to the microwave beat period.

Microwave spectroscopy on a double quantum dot with an on-chip Josephson oscillator

We present measurements on microwave spectroscopy on a double quantum dot with an on-chip microwave source. The quantum dots are realized in the two-dimensional electron gas of an AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure and are weakly coupled in series by a tunnelling barrier forming an 'ionic' molecular state. We employ a Josephson oscillator formed by a long Nb/Al-AlO$_x$/Nb junction as a microwave source. We find photon-assisted tunnelling sidebands induced by the Josephson oscillator, and compare the results with those obtained using an externally operated microwave source.

Anomalous Kondo-effect in Quantum Dot at non-zero bias

We present measurements on the Kondo-effect in a small quantum dot connected strongly to one lead and weakly to the other. The conductance of the dot reveals an offset of the Kondo resonance at zero magnetic field. While the resonance persists in the negative bias regime, it is suppressed in the opposite direction. This demonstrates the pinning of the Kondo resonance to the Fermi levels of the left and right lead. As an outlook we exploit the spin blockade effect to gain information about the spin state of the quantum dot in the Kondo regime.

Statistics of the Coulomb blockade peak spacings of a silicon quantum dot

We present an experimental study of the fluctuations of Coulomb blockade peak positions of a quantum dot. The dot is defined by patterning the two-dimensional electron gas of a silicon MOSFET structure using stacked gates. This permits variation of the number of electrons on the quantum dot without significant shape distortion. The ratio of charging energy to single particle energy is considerably larger than in comparable GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots. The statistical distribution of the conductance peak spacings in the Coulomb blockade regime was found to be unimodal and does not follow the Wigner surmise. The fluctuations of the spacings are much larger than the typical single particle level spacing and thus clearly contradict the expectation of random matrix theory.

Nano-ploughed Josephson Junctions as on-chip Radiation Sources

A new technique is presented which enables the fabrication of highly transparent Josephson junctions in combination with mesoscopic devices. We utilize a modified AFM tip to plough grooves into superconducting material, thus defining a weak link. This weak link is made within the superconducting split-gates, which are used to electrostatically form a conventional quantum dot and serves as a source of millimeter wave radiation around 100 GHz. We show the characteristics of typical junctions built and discuss their high-frequency properties. We find that the millimeter wave emission of the weak link leads to a bolometric effect in the case of quantum point contact spectroscopy.

Josephson Junctions defined by a Nano-Plough

We define superconducting constrictions by ploughing a deposited Aluminum film with a scanning probe microscope. The microscope tip is modified by electron beam deposition to form a nano-plough of diamond-like hardness, what allows the definition of highly transparent Josephson junctions. Additionally a dc-SQUID is fabricated to verify appropriate functioning of the junctions. The devices are easily integrated in mesoscopic devices as local radiation sources and can be used as tunable on-chip millimeter wave sources.

Statistics of conductance oscillations of a quantum dot in the Coulomb-blockade regime

The fluctuations and the distribution of the conductance peak spacings of a quantum dot in the Coulomb-blockade regime are studied and compared with the predictions of random matrix theory (RMT). The experimental data were obtained in transport measurements performed on a semiconductor quantum dot fabricated in a GaAs-AlGaAs heterostructure. It is found that the fluctuations in the peak spacings are considerably larger than the mean level spacing in the quantum dot. The distribution of the spacings appears Gaussian both for zero and for non-zero magnetic field and deviates strongly from the RMT-predictions.
