On the nature of intermittency in weakly dissipative systems

We propose a new perspective on the intermittency in weakly dissipative systems. It is focused on the elementary (burst-like) event separating states with different properties. This event is seen as a real-space-time manifestation of an instanton connecting in an extended space-time states with distinct topology of the idealized version of the system.

Self-duality of the asymptotic relaxation states of fluids and plasmas

The states of asymptotic relaxation of 2-dimensional fluids and plasma present a high degree of regularity and obey to the sinh-Poisson equation. We find that embedding the classical fluid description into a field-theoretical framework, the same equation appears as a manifestation of the self-duality.

Stochastic island generation and influence on the effective transport in stochastic magnetic fields

The transport of collisional particles in stochastic magnetic fields is studied using the decorrelation trajectory method. The nonlinear effect of stochastic generation of magnetic island by magnetic line trapping is considered together with particle collisions. The running diffusion coefficient is determined for arbitrary values of the statistical parameters of the stochastic magnetic field and of the collisional velocity. The effect of the stochastic magnetic islands is analysed.

Noble internal transport barriers and radial subdiffusion of toroidal magnetic lines

Single trajectories of magnetic line motion indicate the persistence of a central protected plasma core, surrounded by a chaotic shell enclosed in a double-sided transport barrier : the latter is identified as being composed of two Cantori located on two successive "most-noble" numbers values of the perturbed safety factor, and forming an internal transport barrier (ITB). Magnetic lines which succeed to escape across this barrier begin to wander in a wide chaotic sea extending up to a very robust barrier (as long as L<1) which is identified mathematically as a robust KAM surface at the plasma edge. In this case the motion is shown to be intermittent, with long stages of pseudo-trapping in the chaotic shell, or of sticking around island remnants, as expected for a continuous time random walk.

Soliton self-modulation of the turbulence amplitude and plasma rotation

The space-uniform amplitude envelope of the Ion Temperature Gradient driven turbulence is unstable to small perturbations and evolves to nonuniform, soliton-like modulated profiles. The induced poloidal asymmetry of the transport fluxes can generate spontaneous poloidal spin-up of the tokamak plasma.

Coherent structures in a turbulent environment

A systematic method is proposed for the determination of the statistical properties of a field consisting of a coherent structure interacting with turbulent linear waves. The explicit expression of the generating functional of the correlations is obtained, performing the functional integration on a neighbourhood in the function space around the soliton. The results show that the non-gaussian fluctuations observed in the tokamak plasma edge can be explained by the intermittent formation of nonlinear coherent structures.

Analytic solution for a class of turbulence problems

An exact analytical method for determining the Lagrangian velocity correlation and the diffusion coefficient for particles moving in a stochastic velocity field is derived. It applies to divergence-free 2-dimensional Gaussian stochastic fields which are stationary, homogeneous and have factorized Eulerian correlations.
