Critical behavior of dissipative two-dimensional spin lattices

We explore critical properties of two-dimensional lattices of spins interacting via an anisotropic Heisenberg Hamiltonian and subject to incoherent spin flips. We determine the steady-state solution of the master equation for the density matrix via the corner-space renormalization method. We investigate the finite-size scaling and critical exponent of the magnetic linear susceptibility associated to a dissipative ferromagnetic transition. We show that the Von Neumann entropy increases across the critical point, revealing a strongly mixed character of the ferromagnetic phase. Entanglement is witnessed by the quantum Fisher information which exhibits a critical behavior at the transition point, showing that quantum correlations play a crucial role in the transition even though the system is in a mixed state.

Probing a dissipative phase transition via dynamical optical hysteresis

We experimentally explore the dynamic optical hysteresis of a semiconductor microcavity as a function of the sweep time. The hysteresis area exhibits a double power law decay due to the shot noise of the driving laser, which triggers switching between metastable states. Upon increasing the average photon number and approaching the thermodynamic limit, the double power law evolves into a single power law. This algebraic behavior characterizes a dissipative phase transition. Our findings are in good agreement with theoretical predictions, and the present experimental approach is promising for the exploration of critical phenomena in photonic lattices.

Probing photon correlations in the dark sites of geometrically frustrated cavity lattices

We theoretically explore the driven-dissipative physics of geometrically frustrated lattices of cavity resonators with relatively weak nonlinearities, i.e. a photon-photon interaction smaller than the loss rate. In such systems, photon modes with zero probability at 'dark' sites are present at the single-particle level due to interference effects. In particular, we study the behavior of a cell with three coupled resonators as well as extended Lieb lattices in 1D and 2D. By considering a partial pumping scheme, with the driving field not applied to the dark sites, we predict that even in presence of relatively weak photon-photon interactions the nominally dark sites achieve a finite photonic population with strong correlations. We show that this is a consequence of biphoton and multiphoton states that in the absence of frustration would not be visible in the observables.

Power-laws in the dynamic hysteresis of quantum nonlinear photonic resonators

We explore theoretically the physics of dynamic hysteresis for driven-dissipative nonlinear photonic resonators. In the regime where the semiclassical mean-field theory predicts bistability, the exact steady-state density matrix is known to be unique, being a statistical mixture of two states: in particular, no static hysteresis cycle of the excited population occurs as a function of the driving intensity. Here, we predict that in the quantum regime a dynamic hysteresis with a rich phenomenology does appear when sweeping the driving amplitude in a finite time. The hysteresis area as a function of the sweep time reveals a double power-law decay, with a behavior qualitatively different from the mean-field predictions. The dynamic hysteresis power-law in the slow sweep limit defines a characteristic time, which depends dramatically on the size of the nonlinearity and on the frequency detuning between the driving and the resonator. In the strong nonlinearity regime, the characteristic time oscillates as a function of the intrinsic system parameters due to multiphotonic resonances. We show that the dynamic hysteresis for the considered class of driven-dissipative systems is due to a non-adiabatic response region with connections to the Kibble-Zurek mechanism for quenched phase transitions. We also consider the case of two coupled driven-dissipative nonlinear resonators, showing that dynamic hysteresis and power-law behavior occur also in presence of correlations between resonators. Our theoretical predictions can be explored in a broad variety of physical systems, e.g., circuit QED superconducting resonators and semiconductor optical microcavities.

Corner space renormalization method for driven-dissipative 2D correlated systems

We present a theoretical method to study driven-dissipative correlated systems on lattices with two spatial dimensions (2D). The steady-state density-matrix of the lattice is obtained by solving the master equation in a corner of the Hilbert space. The states spanning the corner space are determined through an iterative procedure, using eigenvectors of the density-matrix of smaller lattice systems, merging in real space two lattices at each iteration and selecting M pairs of states by maximizing their joint probability. Accuracy of the results is then improved by increasing M, the number of states of the corner space, until convergence is reached. We demonstrate the efficiency of such an approach by applying it to the driven-dissipative 2D Bose-Hubbard model, describing, e.g., lattices of coupled cavities with quantum optical nonlinearities.
