Physics Opportunities with the FCC-hh Injectors

In this chapter we explore a few examples of physics opportunities using the existing chain of accelerators at CERN, including potential upgrades. In this context the LHC ring is also considered as a part of the injector system. The objective is to find examples that constitute sensitive probes of New Physics that ideally cannot be done elsewhere or can be done significantly better at theCERN accelerator complex. Some of these physics opportunities may require a more flexible injector complex with additional functionality than that just needed to inject protons into the FCC-hh at the right energy, intensity and bunch structure. Therefore it is timely to discuss these options concurrently with the conceptual design of the FCC-hh injector system.

The LHCb Trigger and its Performance in 2011

This paper presents the design of the LHCb trigger and its performance on data taken at the LHC in 2011. A principal goal of LHCb is to perform flavour physics measurements, and the trigger is designed to distinguish charm and beauty decays from the light quark background. Using a combination of lepton identification and measurements of the particles' transverse momenta the trigger selects particles originating from charm and beauty hadrons, which typically fly a finite distance before decaying. The trigger reduces the roughly 11\,MHz of bunch-bunch crossings that contain at least one inelastic $pp$ interaction to 3\,kHz. This reduction takes place in two stages; the first stage is implemented in hardware and the second stage is a software application that runs on a large computer farm. A data-driven method is used to evaluate the performance of the trigger on several charm and beauty decay modes.

Search for neutral Higgs bosons decaying into four taus at LEP2

A search for the production and non-standard decay of a Higgs boson, h, into four taus through intermediate pseudoscalars, a, is conducted on 683 pb-1 of data collected by the ALEPH experiment at centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. No excess of events above background is observed, and exclusion limits are placed on the combined production cross section times branching ratio, \xi^2 = \sigma(e+e- --> Zh)/\sigma_{SM}(e+e- --> Zh) x B(h --> aa)x B(a --> \tau^+\tau^-)^2. For mh < 107 GeV/c2 and 4 < ma < 10 GeV/c2, \xi^2 > 1 is excluded at the 95% confidence level.

Precision tests of the Electroweak interactions at e+e- collisions

This paper is an updated version of the lectures given at the XXIX International Meeting on Fundamental Physics in Sitges, Barcelona (February 2000). The measurements perforned at LEP and SLC have substantially improved the precision of the test of the Minimal Standard Model. The precision is such that there is sensitivity to pure weak radiative corrections. This allows to indirectly determine the top mass (m_t = 180 +- 10GeV), the W-boson mass (M_W = 80.375 +- 0.022GeV), and to set an upper limit on the Higgs boson mass of 196GeV at 95% confidence level.

About the relevance of the Imaginary components of the effective couplings in the Asymmetry measurements

The effect coming from imaginary parts of effective couplings in the $e^+ e^-$ asymmetries is investigated. It is shown that for the present level of experimental accuracy, in some asymmetries the imaginary parts of the effective couplings cannot be neglected and moreover that the use of different prescriptions on how to handle them in quoting just real effective couplings from the data may produce sizable differences. A definition of the real effective couplings specifying how to handle the imaginary parts is advocated.
