Phase diagram of the 2D $^4$He in the density-temperature plane

Thin $^4$He films adsorbed to weakly attractive substrates form nearly 2D layers. We describe the vortices in 2D superfluid $^4$He like quasiparticles. With the aid of a variational many-body calculation we estimate their inertial mass and describe their interactions with the $^4$He particles and other vortices. Third sound measurements revealed anomalous behavior below the BKT-phase transition temperature. We ascribe this to the sound mode traveling in the fluid of vortex-antivortex pairs. These pairs forms a crystal (or liquid crystal) when the film thickness increases, the third sound mode splits into two separate modes as seen in experiments. Our many-body calculation predicts the critical density, at which the phase transition into the vortex-antivortex state at zero temperature occurs. We also describe the phase diagram of thin $^4$He films.

Fluctuative Mechanism of Vortex Nucleation in the Flow of $^4He$

We propose a mechanism of a vortex nucleation in a flow of a superfluid $^4He$. The mechanism is related to the creation by critical fluctuations of a "plasma" of half-vortex rings located near the wall. The "plasma" screens the attraction of the vortex to the wall and permits vortex nucleation. In the spirit of Williams-Shenoy theory we derive the scaling laws in the critical region and estimate the scaling relation and the critical exponent $p$ for critical velocity; we find $V_c\sim V_{0}(1-T/T_c)$, so that $p=1$. Various applications of the obtained results are discussed.

Aharonov-Bohm Effect in Luttinger Liquid and Beyond

In systems with the spin-charge separation, the period of the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillation becomes half of the flux quantum. This effect is at least related to the fact that for the creation of the holons (spinons) are needed two electrons. The effect is illustrated on the example of the Hubbard Hamiltonian with the aid of the bosonization including topological numbers and exists also in the Luttinger liquid on two chains. The relation to a fractional 1/N- AB effect, which can be associated with a modified Luttinger liquid, is discussed.

Enhancement of Persistent Current on Multichannel Ring

We study the effect of strong electron-electron interactions on the persistent current in a multichannel ring with the aid of Bosonization and the Bethe ansatz equation discussed by Sutherland and Tsvelik. The interaction acts differently on a single and multichannel ring. If, in the first case, the current is suppressed, then in the second case the current may be enhanced. With the interaction the current is proportional to square of the number of channels. The maximum effect corresponds to medium values of the interaction, where $U\sim V_F$. The new phenomenon of the fractional p/q- Aharonov-Bohm effect appears for interacting electrons on the multichannel ring.

Fine Structure and Fractional Aharonov-Bohm Effect

We find a fine structure in the Aharonov-Bohm effect, characterized by the appearence of a new type of periodic oscillations having smaller fractional period and an amplitude, which may compare with the amplitude of the conventional Aharonov-Bohm effect. Specifically, at low density or strong coupling on a Hubbard ring can coexist along with the conventional Aaronov-Bohm oscillations with the period equal to an integer, measured in units of the elementary flux quantum, two additional oscillations with periods $1/N$ and $M/N$. The integers $N$ and $M$ are the particles number and the number of down-spin particles, respectively. {}From a solution of the Bethe ansatz equations for $N$ electrons located on a ring in a magnetic field we show that the fine structure is due to electron-electron and Zeeman interactions. Our results are valid in the dilute density limit and for an arbitrary value of the Hubbard repulsion $U$

Strong-Correlations Versus U-Center Pairing and Fractional Aharonov-Bohm Effect

The influence of the interaction between electrons on the Aharonov-Bohm effect is investigated in the framework of the Hubbard model. The repulsion between electrons associated with strong correlation is compared with the case of attraction such as $U$-center pairing. The most interesting case, when two electrons are located on a ring, is investigated in detail using the Bethe ansatz method and by exact numerical diagonalization of the Hubbard hamiltonian. It is shown that the quasi half quantum flux periodicity occurs for any nonzero values of $U$. For large number of sites, or strong U, the quasi periodicity becomes an exact half quantum flux periodicity. However the character of the state created on the ring is different in both cases. In the case of $U$-center pairing the electrons are bound in pairs located on the same site. For strong correlations(large positive $ U$) the electrons tend to be far from each other as possible. We show by numerical solution of Bethe ansaz equations that for three electrons the flux periodicity of the ground state energy is equal to 1/3. The one third periodicity may occur even for small values of the ratio $U/t$, for the very dilute system. It is shown analytically using the Bethe ansaz equations for $N$ electrons, that for dilute systems with arbitrary value of the Hubbard repulsion $U$,

Scaling Properties of the Two-Chain Model

Scaling properties of a self-dual field-theoretical model, describing two weakl$spinless Luttinger chains, are studied. A crossover to a sine-Gordon massive phase, with strongly developed two-particleinterchain correlations, is described. It is argued that, in a wide range of the in-chain interaction, renormalization of the interchain hopping amplitude is determined by the Luttinger liquid effects.
