Cu $K$-edge Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering in Edge-Sharing Cuprates

We present calculations for resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in edge-shared copper oxide systems, such as CuGeO$_{3}$ and Li$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$, appropriate for hard x-ray scattering where the photoexcited electron lies above oxygen 2p and copper 3d orbital energies. We perform exact diagonalizations of the multi-band Hubbard and determine the energies, orbital character and resonance profiles of excitations which can be probed via RIXS. We find excellent agreement with recent results on Li$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$ and CuGeO$_{3}$ in the 2-7 eV photon energy loss range.

Effective Spin-1/2 Description of Transverse-Field-Induced Random Fields in Dipolar Spin Glasses with Strong Single-Ion Anisotropy

We present analytical and numerical evidence for the validity of an effective S=1/2 approach to the description of random field generation in S>=1, and especially in an S=1, dipolar spin glass models with strong uniaxial Ising anisotropy and subject to weak external magnetic field Bx transverse to the Ising direction. Explicitely Bx-dependent random fields are shown to naturally emerge in the effective low-energy description of a microscopic S=1 toy model. We discuss our results in relation to recent theoretical studies pertaining to the topic of Bx-induced random fields in the LiHo$_x$Y$_{1-x}$F$_4$ magnetic materials with the Ho$^{3+}$ Ising moments subject to a transverse field. We show that the S_{eff}=1/2 approach is able to capture both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the physics at small Bx, giving results that agree with those obtained using conventional second order perturbation theory.

The emergence of Resonating Valence Bond physics in spin-orbital models

We discuss how orbital degeneracy, which is usually removed by a cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion, could under appropriate circumstances lead rather to a Resonating Valence Bond spin-orbital liquid. The key points are: i) The tendency to form spin-orbital dimers, a tendency already identified in several cases; ii) The mapping onto Quantum Dimer Models, which have been shown to possess Resonating Valence Bond phases on the triangular lattice. How this program can be implemented is explained in some details starting from a microscopic model of LiNiO$_2$.

Raman scattering for triangular lattices spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets

Motivated by various spin-1/2 compounds like Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ or $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, we derive a Raman-scattering operator {\it à la} Shastry and Shraiman for various geometries. For T=0, the exact spectra is computed by Lanczos algorithm for finite-size clusters. We perform a systematic investigation as a function of $J_2/J_1$, the exchange constant ratio: ranging from $J_2=0$, the well known square-lattice case, to $J_2/J_1=1$ the isotropic triangular lattice. We discuss the polarization dependence of the spectra and show how it can be used to detect precursors of the instabilities of the ground state against quantum fluctuations.

Orbital degeneracy as a source of frustration in LiNiO$_2$

Motivated by the absence of cooperative Jahn-Teller effect and of magnetic ordering in LiNiO$_2$, a layered oxide with triangular planes, we study a general spin-orbital model on the triangular lattice. A mean-field approach reveals the presence of several singlet phases between the SU(4) symmetric point and a ferromagnetic phase, a conclusion supported by exact diagonalizations of finite clusters. We argue that one of the phases, characterized by a large number of low-lying singlets associated to dimer coverings of the triangular lattice, could explain the properties of LiNiO$_2$, while a ferro-orbital phase that lies nearby in parameter space leads to a new prediction for the magnetic properties of NaNiO$_2$.
