Novel ideas about emergent vacua

Arguments for special emergent vacua which generate fermion and weak boson masses are outlined. Limitations and consequences of the concept are discussed. If confirmed the Australian dipole would give strong support to such a picture. Preliminary support from recent DZero and CDF data is discussed and predictions for LHC are presented.

Thermal Dileptons at LHC

We predict dilepton invariant-mass spectra for central 5.5 ATeV Pb-Pb collisions at LHC. Hadronic emission in the low-mass region is calculated using in-medium spectral functions of light vector mesons within hadronic many-body theory. In the intermediate-mass region thermal radiation from the Quark-Gluon Plasma, evaluated perturbatively with hard-thermal loop corrections, takes over. An important source over the entire mass range are decays of correlated open-charm hadrons, rendering the nuclear modification of charm and bottom spectra a critical ingredient.

String Junction Effects for Forward and Central Baryon Production in Hadron-Nucleus Collisions

The process of baryon number transfer due to string junction propagation in rapidity space is considered. It leads to a significant effect in the net baryon production in pA collisions at mid-rapidities and an even more significant effect in the forward hemisphere for the cases of πA interactions. The results of numerical calculations in the framework of the Quark-Gluon String Model are in reasonable agreement with the data. Special consideration is given to Λproduced in {π^-}-A collisions extracted from data of WA89 Collaboration.

d-Au and p-p collisions at RHIC and the multichain Monte Carlo Dpmjet-III

In this paper we compare systematically the two-component Dual Parton Model (DPM) event generator Dpmjet-III to d-Au and p-p data from RHIC. In this process we are able to improve the model. The need for fusion of chains and a recalibration of the model to obtain collision scaling in h-A and d-A collisions was found already in previous comparisons. Here, comparing to transverse momentum distributions of identified charged hadrons we find also the need to modify the transverse momentum distributions in the decay of hadronic strings, the basic building blocks of the model on soft hadronic collisions.

RHIC data and the multichain Monte Carlo DPMJET-II

Using data from RHIC we are able to systematically improve the two-component Dual Parton Model (DPM) event generator DPMJET-III. Introducing percolation parametrized as fusion of chains the model describes multiplicities and pseudorapidity distributions in nucleus-nucleus collisions at all centralities. Guided by the d-Au data from RHIC we recalibrate the model to obtain collision scaling in h-A and d-A collisions.

Rapidity gaps and the PHOJET Monte Carlo

A model for the production of large rapidity gaps being implemented in the Monte Carlo event generator PHOJET is discussed. In this model, high-mass diffraction dissociation exhibits properties similar to hadron production in non-diffractive hadronic collisions at high energies. Hard diffraction is described using leading-order QCD matrix elements together with a parton distribution function for the pomeron and pomeron-flux factorization. Since this factorization is imposed on Born graph level only, unitarity corrections lead to a non-factorizing flux function. Rapidity gaps between jets are obtained by soft color reconnection. It was previously shown that this model is able to describe data on diffractive hadron production from the CERN-SPS collider and from the HERA lepton-proton collider. In this work we focus on the model predictions for rapidity gap events in p-p collisions at \sqrt{s} = 1800 GeV and compare to TEVATRON data.

Multiparticle production in high-mass diffraction dissociation and the interplay of photons and pomerons

Multiple interaction models satisfying $s$-channel unitarity predict that, in contrast to inelastic processes, factorization is violated in diffractive processes. The size of this effect can be characterized in terms of the rapidity gap survival probability. The possibility of its measurement at HERA is pointed out. Furthermore a method to measure photon diffraction dissociation at LEP2 and planned linear colliders is discussed and cross section predictions are given.

Hadronic photon interactions at high energies

A simple phenomenological introduction to the physics of multi-pomeron exchange amplitudes in connection with the Abramovski-Gribov-Kancheli (AGK) cutting rules is given. The AGK cutting rules are applied to obtain qualitative and quantitative predictions on multiparticle production at high energies. On this basis, particle production in hadron-hadron scattering, photoproduction, and in particular the transition to deep-inelastic scattering is discussed.
