A multi-agent-based approach to tax morale

We embed the behaviour of tax evasion into the standard two-dimensional Ising model. In the presence of an external magnetic field, the Ising model is able to generate the empirically observed effect of tax morale, i.e. the phenomenon that in some countries tax evasion is either rather high or low. The external magnetic field captures the agents' trust in governmental institutions. We also find that tax authorities may curb tax evasion via appropriate enforcement mechanisms. Our results are robust for the Barabási-Albert and Voronoi-Delaunay networks.

Simulation of majority rule disturbed by power-law noise on directed and undirected Barabasi-Albert networks

On directed and undirected Barabasi-Albert networks the Ising model with spin S=1/2 in the presence of a kind of noise is now studied through Monte Carlo simulations. The noise spectrum P(n) follows a power law, where P(n) is the probability of flipping randomly select n spins at each time step. The noise spectrum P(n) is introduced to mimic the self-organized criticality as a model influence of a complex environment. In this model, different from the square lattice, the order-disorder phase transition of the order parameter is not observed. For directed Barabasi-Albert networks the magnetisation tends to zero exponentially and for undirected Barabasi-Albert networks, it remains constant.

Majority-vote model on directed Erdos-Renyi random graphs

Through Monte Carlo Simulation, the well-known majority-vote model has been studied with noise on directed random graphs. In order to characterize completely the observed order-disorder phase transition, the critical noise parameter $q_c$, as well as the critical exponents $beta/nu$, $gamma/nu$ and $1/nu$ have been calculated as a function of the connectivity $z$ of the random graph.

Ising model S=1, 3/2 and 2 on directed networks

On directed} Barabasi-Albert and Small-World networks the Ising model with spin S=1, 3/2 and 2 is now studied through Monte Carlo simulations. In this model, the order-disorder phase transition of the order parameter is well defined on Small-World networks for Ising model with spin S=1. We calculate the value of the critical temperature T_c for several values of rewiring probability p of the directed Small-World network. This model on directed Small-World networks we obtained a second-order phase transition for p=0.2 and first-order phase transition for p=0.8. The critical exponentes beta/nu, gamma/nu and 1/νwere calculated for p=0.2. On directed Barabasi-Albert we show that no there is phase transition for Ising model with spin S=1, 3/2 and 2.

Comparison of Ising magnet on directed versus undirected Erdos-Renyi and scale-free network

Scale-free networks are a recently developed approach to model the interactions found in complex natural and man-made systems. Such networks exhibit a power-law distribution of node link (degree) frequencies n(k) in which a small number of highly connected nodes predominate over a much greater number of sparsely connected ones. In contrast, in an Erdos-Renyi network each of N sites is connected to every site with a low probability p (of the orde r of 1/N). Then the number k of neighbors will fluctuate according to a Poisson distribution. One can instead assume that each site selects exactly k neighbors among the other sites. Here we compare in both cases the usual network with the directed network, when site A selects site B as a neighbor, and then B influences A but A does not influence B. As we change from undirected to directed scale-free networks, the spontaneous magnetization vanishes after an equilibration time following an Arrhenius law, while the directed ER networks have a positive Curie temperature.

Bit-strings and other modifications of Viviane model for language competition

The language competition model of Viviane de Oliveira et al is modified by associating with each language a string of 32 bits. Whenever a language changes in this Viviane model, also one randomly selected bit is flipped. If then only languages with different bit-strings are counted as different, the resulting size distribution of languages agrees with the empirically observed slightly asymmetric log-normal distribution. Several other modifications were also tried but either had more free parameters or agreed less well with reality.

Potts model with q states on directed Barabasi-Albert networks

On directed Barabasi-Albert networks with two and seven neighbours selected by each added site, the Ising model with spin S=1/2 was seen not to show a spontaneous magnetisation. Instead, the decay time for flipping of the magnetisation followed an Arrhenius law for Metropolis and Glauber algorithms, but for Wolff cluster flipping the magnetisation decayed exponentially with time. However, on these networks the Ising model spin S=1 was seen to show a spontaneous magnetisation. In this model with spin S=1 a first-order phase transition for values of connectivity z=2 and z=7 is well defined. On these same networks the Potts model with q=3 and 8 states is now studied through Monte Carlo simulations. We have obtained also for q=3 and 8 states a first-order phase transition for values of connectivity z=2 and z=7 of the directed Barabasi-Albert network. Theses results are different from the results obtained for same model on two-dimensional lattices, where for q=3 the phase transition is of second order, while for q=8 the phase transition is first-order.

Majority-vote model on (3,4,6,4) and (3^4,6) Archimedean lattices

On Archimedean lattices, the Ising model exhibits spontaneous ordering. Two examples of these lattices of the majority-vote model with noise are considered and studied through extensive Monte Carlo simulations. The order/disorder phase transition is observed in this system. The calculated values of the critical noise parameter are q_c=0.091(2) and q_c=0.134(3) for (3,4,6,4) and (3^4,6) Archimedean lattices, respectively. The critical exponents beta/nu, gamma/nu and 1/nu for this model are 0.103(6), 1.596(54), 0.872(85) for (3,4,6,4) and 0.114(3), 1.632(35), 0.978(104) for (3^4,6) Archimedean lattices. These results differs from the usual Ising model results and the majority-vote model on so-far studied regular lattices or complex networks. The effective dimensionality of the system [D_{eff}(3,4,6,4)=1.802(55) and D_{eff}(3^4,6)=1.860(34)] for these networks are reasonably close to the embedding dimension two.

Majority-vote on undirected Barabasi-Albert networks

On Barabasi-Albert networks with z neighbours selected by each added site, the Ising model was seen to show a spontaneous magnetisation. This spontaneous magnetisation was found below a critical temperature which increases logarithmically with system size. On these networks the majority-vote model with noise is now studied through Monte Carlo simulations. However, in this model, the order-disorder phase transition of the order parameter is well defined in this system and this wasn't found to increase logarithmically with system size. We calculate the value of the critical noise parameter q_c for several values of connectivity $z$ of the undirected Barabasi-Albert network. The critical exponentes beta/nu, gamma/nu and 1/nu were calculated for several values of z.

Critical behavior of the spin-3/2 Blume-Capel model on a random two-dimensional lattice

We investigate the critical properties of the spin-3/2 Blume-Capel model in two dimensions on a random lattice with quenched connectivity disorder. The disordered system is simulated by applying the cluster hybrid Monte Carlo update algorithm and re-weighting techniques. We calculate the critical temperature as well as the critical point exponents $γ/ν$, $β/ν$, $α/ν$, and $ν$. We find that, contrary of what happens to the spin-1/2 case, this random system does not belong to the same universality class as the regular two-dimensional ferromagnetic model.

Non-equilibrium and Irreversible Simulation of Competition among Languages

The bit-string model of Schulze and Stauffer (2005) is applied to non-equilibrium situations and then gives better agreement with the empirical distribution of language sizes. Here the size is the number of people having this language as mother tongue. In contrast, when equilibrium is combined with irreversible mutations of languages, one language always dominates and is spoken by at least 80 percent of the population.

Critical behavior of the 3D-Ising model on a poissonian random lattice

The single-cluster Monte Carlo algorithm and the reweighting technique are used to simulate the 3D-ferromagnetic Ising model on three dimensional Voronoi-Delaunay lattices. It is assumed that the coupling factor $J$ varies with the distance $r$ between the first neighbors as $J(r) \propto e^{-ar}$, with $a \ge 0$. The critical exponents $γ/ν$, $β/ν$, and $ν$ are calculated, and according to the present estimates for the critical exponents, we argue that this random system belongs to the same universality class of the pure three-dimensional ferromegnetic Ising model.

Mixed algorithms in the Ising model on directed Barabasi-Albert networks

On directed Barabasi-Albert networks with two and seven neighbours selected by each added site, the Ising model does not seem to show a spontaneous magnetisation. Instead, the decay time for flipping of the magnetisation follows an Arrhenius law for Metropolis and Glauber algorithms, but for Wolff cluster flipping the magnetisation decays exponentially with time. On these networks the magnetisation behaviour of the Ising model, with Glauber, HeatBath, Metropolis, Wolf or Swendsen-Wang algorithm competing against Kawasaki dynamics, is studied by Monte Carlo simulations. We show that the model exhibits the phenomenon of self-organisation (= stationary equilibrium) when Kawasaki dynamics is not dominant in its competition with Glauber, HeatBath and Swendsen-Wang algorithms. Only for Wolff cluster flipping the magnetisation, this phenomenon occurs after an exponentially decay of magnetisation with time. The Metropolis results are independent of competition. We also study the same process of competition described above but with Kawasaki dynamics at the same temperature as the other algorithms. The obtained results are similar for Wolff cluster flipping, Metropolis and Swendsen-Wang algorithms but different for HeatBath.

Ising model simulation in directed lattices and networks

On directed lattices, with half as many neighbours as in the usual undirected lattices, the Ising model does not seem to show a spontaneous magnetisation, at least for lower dimensions. Instead, the decay time for flipping of the magnetisation follows an Arrhenius law on the square and simple cubic lattice. On directed Barabasi-Albert networks with two and seven neighbours selected by each added site, Metropolis and Glauber algorithms give similar results, while for Wolff cluster flipping the magnetisation decays exponentially with time.

Majority-Vote Model on a Random Lattice

The stationary critical properties of the isotropic majority vote model on random lattices with quenched connectivity disorder are calculated by using Monte Carlo simulations and finite size analysis. The critical exponents $γ$ and $β$ are found to be different from those of the Ising and majority vote on the square lattice model and the critical noise parameter is found to be $q_{c}=0.117\pm0.005$.
