Critical transverse compressive stresses of straight and bent CORC$^\circledR$ wires with and without impregnation

CORC$^\circledR$ wires are a promising superconductor for accelerator magnet applications. While their excellent uniaxial tensile properties have been well established, potential degradation under transverse compression remains a significant concern for accelerator magnets, in which transverse compression is a primary stress experienced by superconductors. To evaluate the critical transverse compressive stresses of ReBCO conductors, we developed an experimental system that enables testing of samples both with and without impregnation in liquid nitrogen. Furthermore, because bending strain induced during coil winding may influence the critical compressive response of CORC$^\circledR$ wires, the apparatus was also modified to allow testing under the bending condition. In this study tests were conducted for five configurations: (1) straight wires without impregnation, (2) bent wires without impregnation, (3) straight wires with Stycast 2850 FT impregnation, (4) bent wires with Stycast 2850 FT impregnation, and (5) bent wires impregnated with paraffin wax. The transverse pressures corresponding to 3% and 5% reductions in the critical current are reported. The effects of wire bending and impregnation on the critical transverse pressure are analyzed, and the implications for transverse stress levels in accelerator magnet conductors are discussed.

Massless quark production in chromoelectric field with back reaction

We study the massless quark production in $SU(2)$ gauge chromoelectric field by single-time Wigner function covariantly with back reaction. The evolution of field and current are investigated. For a phenomenological distribution function, both the time and momentum dependence have been studied. Interesting phenomena are found, which are: when considering the back reaction, the yield of quark production is higher than the Bjorken expanding field, and momentum 'gap' with confinement phenomenon exists in the phenomenological distribution function. To have a better understanding on the phenomena, components of the Wigner function are qualitatively analyzed.

Effect of ion mass on pair production in the interaction of an ultraintense laser with overdense plasmas

The effect of ion mass on pair production in the interaction of an ultraintense laser with overdense plasmas has been explored by particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. It is found that the heavier ion mass excites the higher and broader electrostatic field, which is responsible for the enhancement of backward photon number. The pair yields are also reinforced due to the increase of head-on collision of backwards photon with incoming laser. By examining the density evolution and angle distribution of each particle species the origin of pair yields enhancement has been clarified further.

Pair production in strong SU(2) background fields

The fermion particle pair production in strong SU(2) gauged chromoelectric fields is studied by using Boltzmann-Vlasov equation in a classical way. The existence of pre-production process in a classical description is shown with the distribution evolution of non-Abelian particle production. It is interesting to find that the distribution center of particle number density is on two islands and has a split on color charge sphere as it evolutes and reaches a steady state at last, which is related to the amplitude and the varying of the field.

Local spin polarization of Landau levels under Rashba spin-orbit coupling

We investigate the local spin polarization texture of Landau levels under Rashba spin-orbit coupling in bulk two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) systems. In order to analyze the spin polarization as a function of two-dimensional coordinates within the 2DEG, we first solve the system eigenstates in the symmetric gauge. Our exact analytical wavefunction solutions are shown to be gauge invariant with solutions obtained in the commonly used Landau gauge. We illustrate the two-dimensional spatial spin profile for a single Landau level and suggest means to measure and utilize the local polarization in practice.
