Uncertainty relation of mixed states by means of Wigner-Yanase-Dyson information

The variance of an observable in a quantum state is usually used to describe Heisenberg uncertainty relation. For mixed states, the variance includes quantum uncertainty and classical uncertainty. By means of the skew information and the decomposition of the variance, a stronger uncertainty relation was presented by Luo in [Phys. Rev. A 72, 042110 (2005)]. In this paper, by using Wigner-Yanase-Dyson information which is a generalization of the skew information, we propose a general uncertainty relation of mixed states.

Multi-electron-recombination rates estimated within dense plasmas

We investigate the rates for multielectron recombination within a dense plasma environment in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). We find that these multielectron recombination rates can be high within dense plasmas, and they should be treated in the simulations of the plasmas created by intense radiation, in particular for plasmas created by intense VUV radiation from free-electron-laser (FEL) or for modelling the inertial confinement fusion (ICF) plasmas.

Ionization and expansion dynamics of atomic clusters irradiated with short intense VUV pulses

Kinetic Boltzmann equations are used to model the ionization and expansion dynamics of xenon clusters irradiated with short intense VUV pulses. This unified model includes predominant interactions that contribute to the cluster dynamics induced by this radiation. The dependence of the evolution dynamics on cluster size, $N_{atoms}=20-90000$, and pulse fluence, $F=0.05-1.5$ J/cm$^2$, corresponding to intensities in the range, $10^{12}-10^{14}$ W/cm$^2$ and irradiation times, $\leq 50$ fs, is investigated. The predictions obtained with our model are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. We find that during the exposure the cluster forms a shell structure consisting of a positively charged outer shell and a core of net charge equal to zero. The width of these shells depends on the cluster size. The charged outer shell is large within small clusters ($N_{atoms}=20,70$), and its Coulomb explosion drives the expansion of these clusters. Within the large clusters ($N_{atoms}=2500,90000$) the neutral core is large, and after the Coulomb explosion of the outer shell it expands hydrodynamically. Highly charged ions within the core recombine efficiently with electrons. As a result, we observe a large fraction of neutral atoms created within the core, its magnitude depending on the cluster size.

Inverse bremsstrahlung cross section estimated within evolving plasmas using effective ion potentials

In this paper we estimate the total cross sections for field stimulated photoemissions and photoabsorptions by quasi-free electrons within a non-equilibrium plasma evolving from the strong coupling to the weak coupling regime. Such transition may occur within laser-created plasmas, when the initially created plasma is cold but the heating of the plasma by the laser field is efficient. In particular, such a transition may occur within plasmas created by intense VUV radiation from a FEL as indicated by the results of the first experiments performed at the FLASH facility at DESY. In order to estimate the inverse bremsstrahlung cross sections, we use point-like and effective atomic potentials. For ions modelled as point-like charges, the total cross sections are strongly affected by the changing plasma environment. The maximal change of the cross sections may be of the order of 60 at the change of the plasma parameters (inverse Debye length, kappa, and the electron density, rho_e), in the range: kappa=0-3 A^{-1} and ρ_e=0.01-1 A^{-1}. These ranges correspond to the physical conditions within the plasmas created during the first cluster experiments performed at the FLASH facility at DESY. In contrast, for the effective atomic potentials the total cross sections for photoemission and photoabsorption change only by a factor of 7 at most at the same plasma parameter range. Our results show that the inverse bremsstrahlung cross section estimated with the effective atomic potentials is not much affected by the plasma environment. This observation validates the previous estimations of the enhanced heating effect. This is important as this effect may be responsible for high energy absorption within clusters irradiated with VUV radiation.

Spin and orbital angular momentum in gauge theories (I): QED and determination of the angular momentum density

This two-paper series addresses and fixes the long-standing gauge invariance problem of angular momentum in gauge theories. This QED part reveals: 1) The spin and orbital angular momenta of electrons and photons can all be consistently defined gauge invariantly. 2) These gauge-invariant quantities can be conveniently computed via the canonical, gauge-dependent operators (e.g, $ψ^\dagger \vec x \times\frac 1i \vec \nabla ψ$) in the Coulomb gauge, which is in fact what people (unconsciously) do in atomic physics. 3) The renowned formula $\vec x\times(\vec E\times\vec B)$ is a wrong density for the electromagnetic angular momentum. The angular distribution of angular-momentum flow in polarized atomic radiation is properly described not by this formula, but by the gauge invariant quantities defined here. The QCD paper [arXiv:0907.1284] will give a non-trivial generalization to non-Abelian gauge theories, and discuss the connection to nucleon spin structure.

Spin and orbital angular momentum in gauge theories (II): QCD and nucleon spin structure

Parallel to the construction of gauge invariant spin and orbital angular momentum for QED in paper (I) of this series, we present here an analogous but non-trivial solution for QCD. Explicitly gauge invariant spin and orbital angular momentum operators of quarks and gluons are obtained. This was previously thought to be an impossible task, and opens a more promising avenue towards the understanding of the nucleon spin structure.

Antiferromagnetic correlations near the lower edge of superconducting dome in YBCO6+x

Neutron scattering from high-quality YBCO6.334 single crystals with a T$_c$ of 8.4 K shows that there is no coexistence with long-range antiferromagnetic order at this very low, near-critical doping of $\sim$0.055, in contrast to claims based on local probe techniques. We find that the neutron resonance seen in optimally doped YBCO7 and underdoped YBCO6.5, has undergone large softening and damping. It appears that the overdamped resonance, with a relaxation rate of 2 meV, is coupled to a zero-energy central mode that grows with cooling and eventually saturates with no change at or below T$_c$. Although a similar qualitative behaviour is found for YBCO6.35, our study shows that the central mode is stronger in YBCO6.334 than YBCO6.35. The system remains subcritical with short-ranged three dimensional correlations.

Measurement of the proton electric to magnetic form factor ratio from \vec ^1H(\vec e, e'p)

We report the first precision measurement of the proton electric to magnetic form factor ratio from spin-dependent elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from a polarized hydrogen internal gas target. The measurement was performed at the MIT-Bates South Hall Ring over a range of four-momentum transfer squared $Q^2$ from 0.15 to 0.65 (GeV/c)$^2$. Significantly improved results on the proton electric and magnetic form factors are obtained in combination with previous cross-section data on elastic electron-proton scattering in the same $Q^2$ region.

Confined spin waves reveal an assembly of nanosize domains in ferromagnetic La(1-x)CaxMnO3 (x=0.17,0.2)

We report a study of spin-waves in ferromagnetic La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_3$, at concentrations x=0.17 and x=0.2 very close to the metallic transition (x=0.225). Below T$_C$, in the quasi-metallic state (T=150K), nearly q-independent energy levels are observed. They are characteristic of standing spin waves confined into finite-size ferromagnetic domains, defined in {\bf a, b) plane for x=0.17 and in all q-directions for x=0.2. They allow an estimation of the domain size, a few lattice spacings, and of the magnetic coupling constants inside the domains. These constants, anisotropic, are typical of an orbital-ordered state, allowing to characterize the domains as "hole-poor". The precursor state of the CMR metallic phase appears, therefore, as an assembly of small orbital-ordered domains.

Comparison of Source Images for protons, $π^-$'s and $Λ$'s in 6 AGeV Au+Au collisions

Source images are extracted from two-particle correlations constructed from strange and non-strange hadrons produced in 6 AGeV Au + Au collisions. Very different source images result from pp vs p$Λ$ vs $π^-π^-$ correlations. These observations suggest important differences in the space-time emission histories for protons, pions and neutral strange baryons produced in the same events.

Unusual magneto-elastic forces stabilize the insulating ferromagnetic state of manganites: the La(0.8)Ca(0.2)$MnO(3) case

The ferromagnetic and insulating state observed in La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_3$, 0.125$<$x$<$0.2, is characterized by structural and magnetic anomalies below T$_C$, similar to those observed in the x$_{Sr}$$\approx$1/8. A neutron scattering study of the superlattice {\bf Q$_0$}= (0,0,1+/4)$_{cub}$ peak, and of the magnetic excitations are reported in the x$_{Ca}$=0.2 sample. The occurrence of this superstructure is associated with the observation of a gap in the spin dynamics, at a {\bf q$_0$} wave-vector ({\bf q$_0$}={\bf Q$_0$}-$τ$) with the same modulus $|${\bf q$_0$}$|$ in all directions, which divides the dispersion into two regimes. For $|${\bf q}$|$$<$$|${\bf q$_0$}$|$ the dispersion is splitted into two or three curves. For $|${\bf q}$|$$>$$|${\bf q$_0$}$|$, magnetic excitations lock on acoustic and optic phonon energies, revealing a new kind of magneto-vibrational coupling. We suggest an analysis in terms of two distinct magnetic couplings, associated with two ferromagnetic media involved into a collective state.

Systematic Study of the Kaon to Pion Multiplicity Ratios in Heavy-Ion Collisions

We present a systematic study of the kaon to pion multiplicity ratios (K+/pi+ and K-/pi-) in heavy-ion collisions from AGS to RHIC energy using the Relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (RQMD) model. The model satisfactorily describes the available experimental data on K+/pi+ and K-/pi-. Within the model, we find that the strong increase of the ratios with the number of participants is mainly due to hadronic rescattering of produced mesons with ingoing baryons and their resonances. The enhancement of K/pi in heavy-ion collisions with respect to elementary p+p interactions is larger at AGS energy than SPS energy, and decreases smoothly with bombarding energy. The total multiplicity ratios at RHIC energy are predicted by RQMD to be K+/pi+ = 0.19 and K-/pi- = 0.15.

Strange quark polarization of the nucleon: A parameter-independent prediction of the chiral potential model

We perform a one-loop calculation of the strange quark polarization ($Δs$) of the nucleon in a SU(3) chiral potential model. We find that if the intermediate excited quark states are summed over in a proper way, i.e., summed up to a given energy instead of given radial and orbital quantum numbers, $Δs$ turns out to be almost independent of {\em all} the model parameters: quark masses, scalar- and vector-potential strengths. The contribution from the quark-antiquark pair creation and annihilation ``$Z$'' diagrams is found to be significant. Our numerical results agree quite reasonably with experiments and lattice QCD calculations.

Positive strangeness contribution to the nucleon magnetic moment in a relativistic chiral potential model

The strangeness contribution to the nucleon magnetic moment is calculated at the one-loop level in a relativistic SU(3) chiral potential model and is found to be {\em positive}, that is, with an {\em opposite} sign to the nucleon strangeness polarization. It is the ``Z'' diagram that violates the usual relation between spin and magnetic moment. The positive value is due to the contribution from the intermediate excited quark states, while the intermediate ground state gives a negative contribution. Our numerical results agree quite well with the new measurement of the SAMPLE Collaboration.

Renormalization of quark axial current in the chiral potential model

Non-conserved composite operators like the quark axial current have divergent matrix elements therefore must be renormalized. We explore how this can be done in quark model calculations where the systematic procedure of dimensional regularization and minimal subtraction is not applicable. We propose a most natural and convenient regularization scheme of cutting the intermediate quark states over which we sum in loop diagram calculations at a certain energy. We show that this scheme works perfectly for the quark axial current and we obtain the quark spin contribution to the proton spin: $Δ_u=0.82$, $Δ_d=-0.43$, $Δ_s=-0.10$, which is in excellent agreement with experiments.

A fast programmable trigger for isolated cluster counting in the BELLE experiment

We have developed a fast programmable trigger processor board based on a field programmable gate array and a complex programmable logic device for use in the BELLE experiment. The trigger board accommodates 144 ECL input signals, 2 NIM input signals, 24 ECL output signals, and the VME bus specification. An asynchronous trigger logic for counting isolated clusters is used. We have obtained trigger latency of 50 ns with a full access to input and output signals via a VME interface. The trigger logic can be modified at any time depending on the experimental conditions.

Deuterons and space-momentum correlations in high energy nuclear collisions

Using a microscopic transport model together with a coalescence after-burner, we study the formation of deuterons in Au + Au central collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200 AGeV$. It is found that the deuteron transverse momentum distributions are strongly affected by the nucleon space-momentum correlations, at the moment of freeze-out, which are mostly determined by the number of rescatterings. This feature is useful for studying collision dynamics at ultrarelativistic energies.

Two-Proton Correlations from PB+PB Central Collisions

The two-proton correlation function at midrapidity from Pb+Pb central collisions at 158 AGeV has been measured by the NA49 experiment. The preliminary results are compared to model predictions from proton source distributions of static thermal Gaussian sources and the transport models of RQMD and VENUS. We obtain an effective proton source size 4.0 +-0.15(stat.) +0.06-0.18(syst.) fm. The RQMD model underpredicts the correlation function (source size 4.41 fm), while the VENUS model overpredicts the correlation function (source size 3.55 fm).
