Universal three-body recombination and Efimov resonances in an ultracold Li-Cs mixture

We study Efimov resonances via three-body loss in an ultracold two-component gas of fermionic $^6$Li and bosonic $^{133}$Cs atoms close to a Feshbach resonance at 843~G, extending results reported previously [Pires \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 250404 (2014)] to temperatures around 120~nK. The experimental scheme for reaching lower temperatures is based upon compensating the gravity-induced spatial separation of the mass-imbalanced gases with bichromatic optical dipole traps. We observe the first and second excited Li-Cs-Cs Efimov resonance in the magnetic field dependence of the three-body event rate constant, in good agreement with the universal zero-range theory at finite temperature [Petrov and Werner, Phys. Rev. A 92, 022704 (2015)]. Deviations are found for the Efimov ground state, and the inelasticity parameter $η$ is found to be significantly larger than those for single-species systems.

FlashCam: a fully-digital camera for the medium-sized telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array

The FlashCam group is currently preparing photomultiplier-tube based cameras proposed for the medium-sized telescopes (MST) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). The cameras are designed around the FlashCam readout concept which is the first fully-digital readout system for Cherenkov cameras, based on commercial FADCs and FPGAs as key components for the front-end electronics modules and a high performance camera server as back-end. This contribution describes the progress of the full-scale FlashCam camera prototype currently under construction, as well as performance results also obtained with earlier demonstrator setups. Plans towards the production and implementation of FlashCams on site are also briefly presented.

Feasibility of radar detection of extensive air showers

Reflection of radio waves off the short-lived plasma produced by the high-energy shower particles in the air is simulated, considering various radar setups and shower geometries. We show that the plasma produced by air showers has to be treated always as underdense. Therefore, we use the Thomson cross-section for scattering of radio waves corrected for molecular quenching and we sum coherently contributions of the reflected radio wave over the volume of the plasma disk to obtain the time evolution of the signal arriving at the receiver antenna. The received power and the spectral power density of the radar echo are analyzed. Based on the obtained results, we discuss possible modes of radar detection of extensive air showers. We conclude that the scattered signal is too weak for the radar method to provide an efficient and inexpensive method of air shower detection.

Three-body recombination in heteronuclear mixtures at finite temperature

Within the universal zero-range theory, we compute the three-body recombination rate to deep molecular states for two identical bosons resonantly interacting with each other and with a third atom of another species, in the absence of weakly bound dimers. The results allow for a quantitative understanding of loss resonances at finite temperature and, combined with experimental data, can be used for testing the Efimov universality and extracting the corresponding three-body parameters in a given system. Curiously, we find that the loss rate can be dramatically enhanced by the resonant heavy-heavy interaction, even for large mass ratios where this interaction is practically irrelevant for the Efimov scaling factor. This effect is important for analysing the recent loss measurements in the Cs-Li mixture.

First Experimental Characterization of Microwave Emission from Cosmic Ray Air Showers

We report the first direct measurement of the overall characteristics of microwave radio emission from extensive air showers. Using a trigger provided by the KASCADE-Grande air shower array, the signals of the microwave antennas of the CROME (Cosmic-Ray Observation via Microwave Emission) experiment have been read out and searched for signatures of radio emission by high-energy air showers in the GHz frequency range. Microwave signals have been detected for more than 30 showers with energies above 3*10^16 eV. The observations presented in this Letter are consistent with a mainly forward-directed and polarised emission process in the GHz frequency range. The measurements show that microwave radiation offers a new means of studying air showers at energies above 10^17 eV.

Enhancement of the radar signal of air showers due to time compression

We investigate the feasibility of detecting extensive air showers by the radar technique at viewing angles smaller than $\sim 25^\circ$ to the shower axis. Considering a bistatic radar setup and shower geometries in which the receiver points into the arriving shower, we simulate reflection of radio waves off the short-lived plasma produced by the high-energy shower particles in the air. Using the Thomson cross-section for scattering of radio waves and summing coherently contributions of the reflected radio wave over the volume of the plasma disk, we obtain the time evolution of the signal. We analyze the spectral power density of the radar echo and the received power. Based on the obtained results, we discuss possible modes of the radar detection of extensive air showers.

Observation of Polarised Microwave Emission from Cosmic Ray Air Showers

We report on the first direct measurement of the basic features of microwave radio emission from extensive air showers. Using a trigger provided by the KASCADE-Grande air shower array, the signals of the microwave antennas of the CROME (Cosmic-Ray Observation via Microwave Emission) experiment have been read out and searched for signatures of radio emission by high-energy air showers. Microwave signals have been detected for more than 30 showers with energies above $3\times10^{16}$\,eV. The observations presented in this Letter are consistent with a mainly forward-beamed, coherent and polarised emission process in the GHz frequency range. An isotropic, unpolarised radiation is disfavoured as the dominant emission model. The measurements show that microwave radiation offers a new means of studying air showers at very high energy.

Lifetime of the Bose Gas with Resonant Interactions

We study the lifetime of a Bose gas at and around unitarity using a Feshbach resonance in lithium~7. At unitarity, we measure the temperature dependence of the three-body decay coefficient $L_{3}$. Our data follow a $L_3 {=} λ_{3} / T^{2}$ law with $λ_{3} = 2.5(3)_{stat}_(6)_{sys} 10^{-20} (μK)^2 cm^6 s^{-1}$ and are in good agreement with our analytical result based on the zero-range theory. Varying the scattering length $a$ at fixed temperature, we investigate the crossover between the finite-temperature unitary region and the previously studied regime where $|a|$ is smaller than the thermal wavelength. We find that $L_{3}$ is continuous across resonance, and over the whole $a {<} 0$ range our data quantitatively agree with our calculation.

Radar reflection off extensive air showers

We investigate the possibility of detecting extensive air showers by the radar technique. Considering a bistatic radar system and different shower geometries, we simulate reflection of radio waves off the static plasma produced by the shower in the air. Using the Thomson cross-section for radio wave reflection, we obtain the time evolution of the signal received by the antennas. The frequency upshift of the radar echo and the power received are studied to verify the feasibility of the radar detection technique.

Feynman diagrams versus Fermi-gas Feynman emulator

Precise understanding of strongly interacting fermions, from electrons in modern materials to nuclear matter, presents a major goal in modern physics. However, the theoretical description of interacting Fermi systems is usually plagued by the intricate quantum statistics at play. Here we present a cross-validation between a new theoretical approach, Bold Diagrammatic Monte Carlo (BDMC), and precision experiments on ultra-cold atoms. Specifically, we compute and measure with unprecedented accuracy the normal-state equation of state of the unitary gas, a prototypical example of a strongly correlated fermionic system. Excellent agreement demonstrates that a series of Feynman diagrams can be controllably resummed in a non-perturbative regime using BDMC. This opens the door to the solution of some of the most challenging problems across many areas of physics.

First results of the CROME experiment

It is expected that a radio signal in the microwave range is produced in the atmosphere due to molecular bremsstrahlung initiated by extensive air showers. The CROME (Cosmic-Ray Observation via Microwave Emission) experiment was built to search for this microwave signal. Radiation from the atmosphere is monitored in the extended C band (3.4--4.2 GHz) in coincidence with showers detected by the KASCADE-Grande experiment. The detector setup consists of several parabolic antennas and fast read-out electronics. The sensitivity of the detector has been measured with different methods. First results after half a year of data taking are presented.

Interaction-induced adiabatic cooling and antiferromagnetism of cold fermions in optical lattices

We propose an interaction-induced cooling mechanism for two-component cold fermions in an optical lattice. It is based on an increase of the ``spin'' entropy upon localisation, an analogue of the Pomeranchuk effect in liquid Helium 3. We discuss its application to the experimental realisation of the antiferromagnetic phase. We illustrate our arguments with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory calculations.
