Hourly Warning for Strong Earthquakes

A promising perspective is presented that humans can provide hourly warning for strong land earthquakes (EQs, Ms6). Two important atmospheric electrostatic signal features are described. A table that lists 9 strong land EQs with shock time, epicenter, magnitude, weather in the region near the epicenter, precursor beginning time, and precursor duration demonstrates that at approximately several hours to one day before a strong land EQ, the weather conditions are fair near the epicenter, and an abnormal negative atmospheric electrostatic signal is very obvious. Moreover, the mechanism is explained. A method by which someone could determine the epicenter and the magnitude of a forthcoming strong EQ is suggested. Finally, the possibility of realizing hourly warning for strong land EQs in the near future is pointed out.

Magnetic order and disorder in a quasi-two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet with randomized exchange

We present an investigation of the effect of randomizing exchange strengths in the $S=1/2$ square lattice quasi-two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet (QuinH)$_2$Cu(Cl$_{x}$Br$_{1-x}$)$_{4}\cdot$2H$_2$O (QuinH$=$Quinolinium, C$_9$H$_8$N$^+$), with $0\leq x \leq 1$. Pulsed-field magnetization measurements allow us to estimate an effective in-plane exchange strength $J$ in a regime where exchange fosters short-range order, while the temperature $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ at which long range order (LRO) occurs is found using muon-spin relaxation, allowing us to construct a phase diagram for the series. We evaluate the effectiveness of disorder in suppressing $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ and the ordered moment size and find an extended disordered phase in the region $0.4 \lesssim x \lesssim 0.8$ where no magnetic order occurs, driven by quantum effects of the exchange randomness.

Extremely well isolated 2D spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg layers with small exchange coupling in the molecular-based magnet CuPOF

We report on a comprehensive characterization of the newly synthesized Cu$^{2+}$-based molecular magnet [Cu(pz)$_2$(2-HOpy)$_2$](PF$_6$)$_2$ (CuPOF), where pz = C$_4$H$_4$N$_2$ and 2-HOpy = C$_5$H$_4$NHO. From a comparison of theoretical modeling to results of bulk magnetometry, specific heat, $μ^+$SR, ESR, and NMR spectroscopy, this material is determined as an excellent realization of the 2D square-lattice $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with a moderate intraplane nearest-neighbor exchange coupling of $J/k_\mathrm{B} = 6.80(5)$ K, and an extremely small interlayer interaction of about 1 mK. At zero field, the bulk magnetometry reveals a temperature-driven crossover of spin correlations from isotropic to $XY$ type, caused by the presence of a weak intrinsic easy-plane anisotropy. A transition to long-range order, driven by the low-temperature $XY$ anisotropy under the influence of the interlayer coupling, occurs at $T_\mathrm{N} = 1.38(2)$ K, as revealed by $μ^+$SR. In applied magnetic fields, our $^1$H-NMR data reveal a strong increase of the magnetic anisotropy, manifested by a pronounced enhancement of the transition temperature to commensurate long-range order at $T_\mathrm{N} =2.8$ K and 7 T.

Electrical molecular switch addressed by chemical stimuli

We demonstrate that the conductance switching of benzo-bis(imidazole) molecules upon protonation depends on the lateral functional groups. The protonated H-substituted molecule shows a higher conductance than the neutral one (Gpro>Gneu), while the opposite (Gneu>Gpro) is observed for a molecule laterally functionalized by amino-phenyl groups. These results are demonstrated at various scale lengths : self-assembled monolayer, tiny nanodot-molecule junction and single molecules. From ab-initio theoretical calculations, we conclude that for the H-substituted molecule, the result Gpro>Gneu is correctly explained by a reduction of the LUMO-HOMO gap, while for the amino-phenyl functionnalized molecule, the result Gneu>Gpro is consistent with a shift of HOMO, which reduces the density of states at the Fermi energy.

The near surface vertical atmospheric electric field abnormality could be as a promising imminent precursor of major earthquakes

A promising short term precursor of major earthquakes (EQ) is very crucial in saving people and preventing huge losses. Ez, atmospheric electrostatic field vertical component, under fair air conditions, is generally oriented downwards (positive). Anomalous negative Ez signals could be used as an indicator of a great number of radioactive gases which are released from great number of rock clefts just before major earthquakes. Enhanced emission of radon radioactive decay will produce an anomalously large number of ion pairs. The positive particles will be transported downward by the fair weather electrostatic field and pile up near the surface. Finally, obviously and abnormally, an oriented upward atmospheric electric field Ez near the ground could be formed. Therefore, monitoring this Ez may be applied effectively in earthquake warning.

Probing magnetic order and disorder in the one-dimensional molecular spin chains CuF2(pyz) and [Ln(hfac)3(boaDTDA)]n (Ln=Sm, La) using implanted muons

We present the results of muon-spin relaxation ($μ^{+}$SR) measurements on antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic spin chains. In antiferromagnetic CuF$_{2}$(pyz) we identify a transition to long range magnetic order taking place at $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 0.6(1)$ K, allowing us to estimate a ratio with the intrachain exchange of $T_{\mathrm{N}}/|J| \approx 0.1$ and the ratio of interchain to intrachain exchange coupling as $|J'/J| \approx 0.05$. The ferromagnetic chain [Sm(hfac)$_{3}$(boaDTDA)]$_{n}$ undergoes an ordering transition at $T_{\mathrm{c}}=2.8(1)$ K, seen via a broad freezing of dynamic fluctuations on the muon (microsecond) timescale and implying $T_{\mathrm{c}}/|J| \approx 0.6$. The ordered radical moment continues to fluctuate on this timescale down to 0.3 K, while the Sm moments remain disordered. In contrast, the radical spins in [La(hfac)$_{3}$(boaDTDA)]$_{n}$ remain magnetically disordered down to $T=0.1$ K suggesting $T_{\mathrm{c}}/|J| < 0.17$.

Origin of skyrmion lattice phase splitting in Zn-substituted Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$

We present an investigation into the structural and magnetic properties of Zn-substituted Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$, a system in which the skyrmion lattice (SkL) phase in the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram was previously seen to split as a function of increasing Zn concentration. We find that splitting of the SkL is only observed in polycrystalline samples and reflects the occurrence of several coexisting phases with different Zn content, each distinguished by different magnetic behaviour. No such multiphase behaviour is observed in single crystal samples.

Quantum magnetism in molecular spin ladders probed with muon-spin spectroscopy

We present the results of muon-spin spectroscopy ($μ^{+}$SR) measurements on the molecular spin ladder system (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4(1-x)}$Cl$_{4x}$, [Hpip=(C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N)]. Using transverse field $μ^{+}$SR we are able to identify characteristic behaviour in each of the regions of the phase diagram of the $x=0$ strong-rung spin ladder system (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_4$. Comparison of our results to those of the dimer-based molecular magnet Cu(pyz)(gly)(ClO$_{4}$) shows several common features. We locate the crossovers in partially disordered (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4(1-x)}$Cl$_{4x}$ ($x=0.05$), where a region of behaviour intermediate between quantum disordered and Luttinger liquid-like is identified. Our interpretation of the results incorporates an analysis of the probable muon stopping states in (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_4$ based on density functional calculations and suggests how the muon plus its local distortion can lead to a local probe unit with good sensitivity to the magnetic state. Using longitudinal field $μ^{+}$SR we compare the dynamic response of the $x=1$ strong-rung material (Hpip)$_{2}$CuCl$_{4}$ to that of the strong-leg material (C$_{7}$H$_{10}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ (known as DIMPY) and demonstrate that our results are in agreement with predictions based on interacting fermionic quasiparticle excitations in these materials.

Quantum-critical spin dynamics in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid studied with muon-spin relaxation

We demonstrate that quantum-critical spin dynamics can be probed in high magnetic fields using muon-spin relaxation ($μ^{+}$SR). Our model system is the strong-leg spin ladder bis(2,3-dimethylpyridinium) tetrabromocuprate (DIMPY). In the gapless Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase we observe finite-temperature scaling of the $μ^{+}$SR $1/T_1$ relaxation rate which allows us to determine the Luttinger parameter $K$. We discuss the benefits and limitations of local probes compared with inelastic neutron scattering.

Effect of disorder on a pressure-induced $z=1$ magnetic quantum phase transition

Pressure-induced ordering close to a $z=1$ quantum critical point is studied in the presence of bond disorder in the quantum spin system (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)Cu$_2$(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_{x}$)$_6$ (PHCX) by means of muon-spin rotation and relaxation. As for the pure system (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)Cu$_2$Cl$_6$, pressure allows PHCX with small levels of disorder ($x\leq 7.5\%$) to be driven through a quantum critical point separating a low-pressure quantum paramagnetic phase from magnetic order at high pressures. However, the pressure-induced ordered state is highly inhomogeneous for disorder concentrations $x>1\%$. This behavior might be related to the formation of a quantum Griffiths phase above a critical disorder concentration $7.5\%<x_{\rm c}<15\%$. Br-substitution increases the critical pressure and suppresses critical temperatures and ordered moment sizes.

Transverse field muon-spin rotation measurement of the topological anomaly in a thin film of MnSi

We present the results of transverse-field muon-spin rotation measurements on an epitaxially grown 40 nm-thick film of MnSi on Si(111) in the region of the field-temperature phase diagram where a skyrmion phase has been observed in the bulk. We identify changes in the quasistatic magnetic field distribution sampled by the muon, along with evidence for magnetic transitions around $T\approx 40$ K and 30 K. Our results suggest that the cone phase is not the only magnetic texture realized in film samples for out-of-plane fields.

Electron Spin Resonance in a Spin-1/2 Heisenberg Strong-rung Ladder

Cu(C$_8$H$_6$N$_2$)Cl$_2$, a strong-rung spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder compound, is probed by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy in the field-induced gapless phase above $H_{c1}$. The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth is analyzed in the quantum field theory framework, suggesting that the anisotropy of magnetic interactions plays a crucial role, determining the peculiar low-temperature ESR linewidth behavior. In particular, it is argued that the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (which is allowed on the bonds along the ladder legs) can be the source of this behavior in Cu(C$_8$H$_6$N$_2$)Cl$_2$.

Raman study of spin excitations in the tunable quantum spin ladder Cu(Qnx)(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_2$

Raman spectroscopy is used to study magnetic excitations in the quasi one dimensional $S=1/2$ quantum spin systems Cu(Qnx)(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_2$. The low energy spectrum is found to be dominated by a two-magnon continuum as expected from the numerical calculations for the Heisenberg spin ladder model. The continuum shifts to higher energies as more Br is introduced. The cutoff of the scattering increases faster than the onset indicating that the increase of exchange constant along the leg is the main effect on the magnetic properties. The upper and lower continuum thresholds are measured as a function of Br content across the entire range and compared to estimates based on previous bulk studies. We observe small systematic deviations that are discussed.

Muon-spin relaxation study of the double perovskite insulators Sr$_{2}B$OsO$_6$ ($B={\rm Fe, Y, In}$)

We present the results of zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements made on the double perovskite insulators Sr$_{2}B$OsO$_6$ ($B={\rm Fe, Y, In}$). Spontaneous muon-spin precession indicative of quasistatic long range magnetic ordering is observed in Sr$_{2}$FeOsO$_6$ within the AF1 antiferromagnetic phase for temperatures below $T_{\rm N}=135 \pm 2~{\rm K}$. Upon cooling below $T_2 \approx 67~{\rm K}$ the oscillations cease to be resolvable owing to the coexistence of the AF1 and AF2 phases, which leads to a broader range of internal magnetic fields. Using density functional calculations we identify a candidate muon stopping site within the unit cell, which dipole field simulations show to be consistent with the proposed magnetic structure. The possibility of incommensurate magnetic ordering is discussed for temperatures below $T_{\rm N}=53~{\rm K}$ and 25~K for Sr$_{2}$YOsO$_6$ and Sr$_{2}$InOsO$_6$, respectively.

Magnetic phase diagram of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CoO$_{4}$ revised using muon-spin relaxation

We report the results of a muon-spin relaxation ($μ$SR) investigation of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CoO$_{4}$, an antiferromagnetic insulating series which has been shown to support charge ordered and magnetic stripe phases and an hourglass magnetic excitation spectrum. We present a revised magnetic phase diagram, which shows that the suppression of the magnetic ordering temperature is highly sensitive to small concentrations of holes. Distinct behavior within an intermediate $x$ range ($0.2 \leq x \lesssim 0.6$) suggests that the putative stripe ordered phase extends to lower $x$ than previously thought. Further charge doping ($0.67 \leq x \leq 0.9$) prevents magnetic ordering for $T \gtrsim 1.5~{\rm K}$

Magnetism in a family of $S = 1$ square lattice antiferromagnets Ni$X_2$(pyz)$_2$ ($X = $ Cl, Br, I, NCS; pyz = pyrazine)

The crystal structures of Ni$X_2$(pyz)$_2$ ($X$ = Cl (\textbf{1}), Br (\textbf{2}), I (\textbf{3}) and NCS (\textbf{4})) were determined at 298~K by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. All four compounds consist of two-dimensional (2D) square arrays self-assembled from octahedral NiN$_4$$X_2$ units that are bridged by pyz ligands. The 2D layered motifs displayed by \textbf{1}-\textbf{4} are relevant to bifluoride-bridged [Ni(HF$_2$)(pyz)$_2$]$Z$F$_6$ ($Z$ = P, Sb) which also possess the same 2D layers. In contrast, terminal $X$ ligands occupy axial positions in \textbf{1}-\textbf{4} and cause a staggering of adjacent layers. Long-range antiferromagnetic order occurs below 1.5 (Cl), 1.9 (Br and NCS) and 2.5~K (I) as determined by heat capacity and muon-spin relaxation. The single-ion anisotropy and $g$ factor of \textbf{2}, \textbf{3} and \textbf{4} are measured by electron spin resonance where no zero--field splitting was found. The magnetism of \textbf{1}-\textbf{4} crosses a spectrum from quasi-two-dimensional to three-dimensional antiferromagnetism. An excellent agreement was found between the pulsed-field magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and $T_\textrm{N}$ of \textbf{2} and \textbf{4}. Magnetization curves for \textbf{2} and \textbf{4} calculated by quantum Monte Carlo simulation also show excellent agreement with the pulsed-field data. \textbf{3} is characterized as a three-dimensional antiferromagnet with the interlayer interaction ($J_\perp$) slightly stronger than the interaction within the two-dimensional [Ni(pyz)$_2$]$^{2+}$ square planes ($J_\textrm{pyz}$).

Transverse field muon-spin rotation signature of the skyrmion lattice phase in Cu2OSeO3

We present the results of transverse field (TF) muon-spin rotation (muSR) measurements on Cu2OSeO3, which has a skyrmion lattice (SL) phase. We measure the response of the TF muSR signal in that phase along with the surrounding ones, and suggest how the phases might be distinguished using the results of these measurements. Dipole field simulations support the conclusion that the muon is sensitive to the SL via the TF lineshape and, based on this interpretation, our measurements suggest that the SL is quasistatic on a timescale tau > 100 ns.

Spin diffusion in the low-dimensional molecular quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet Cu(pyz)(NO$_{3}$)$_{2}$ detected with implanted muons

We present the results of muon-spin relaxation measurements of spin excitations in the one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet Cu(pyz)(NO$_{3}$)$_{2}$. Using density-functional theory we propose muon sites and assess the degree of perturbation the muon probe causes on the system. We identify a site involving the muon forming a hydroxyl-type bond with an oxygen on the nitrate group that is sensitive to the characteristic spin dynamics of the system. Our measurements of the spin dynamics show that in the temperature range $T_{\mathrm{N}} J$ and that in the related two-dimensional system Cu(pyz)$_2$(ClO$_4$)$_{2}$.
