Coincident onset of charge order and pseudogap in a homogeneous high-temperature superconductor

Understanding high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates requires knowledge of the metallic phase it evolves from, particularly the pseudogap profoundly affecting the electronic properties at low carrier densities. A key question is the influence of chemical disorder, which is ubiquitous but exceedingly difficult to model. Using resonant x-ray scattering, we identified two-dimensional charge order in stoichiometric YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ ($T_c$ = 80 K), which is nearly free of chemical disorder. The charge order amplitude shows a concave temperature dependence and vanishes sharply at $T^*$ = 200 K, the onset of a prominent pseudogap previously determined by spectroscopy, suggesting a causal link between these phenomena. The gradual onset of charge order in other cuprates is thus likely attributable to an inhomogeneous distribution of charge ordering temperatures due to disorder induced by chemical substitution. The relationship between the pseudogap and the disorder-induced gradual freeze-out of charge carriers remains a central issue in research on high-$T_c$ superconductors.

Unusual dynamic charge-density-wave correlations in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$

The charge-density-wave (CDW) instability in the underdoped, pseudogap part of the cuprate phase diagram has been a major recent research focus, yet measurements of dynamic, energy-resolved CDW correlations are still in their infancy. We report a high-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study of the underdoped cuprate superconductor HgBa$_{2}$CuO$_{4+δ}$ ($T_c = 70$ K). At $T=250$ K, above the CDW order temperature $T_\mathrm{CDW} \approx 200$ K, we observe significant dynamic CDW correlations at about 40 meV. This energy scale is comparable to both the superconducting gap and the previously reported low-energy pseudogap. At $T = T_c$, a strong elastic CDW peak appears, but the dynamic correlations around 40 meV remain virtually unchanged. In addition, we observe a new feature: dynamic correlations at significantly higher energy, with a characteristic scale of about 160 meV. A similar scale was previously identified in other experiments as a high-energy pseudogap. The existence of three distinct features in the charge response is highly unusual for a CDW system, and suggests that charge order in the cuprates is closely related to the pseudogap phenomenon and more complex than previously thought. We further observe the paramagnon dispersion along [1,0], across the two-dimensional CDW wavevector $\boldsymbol{q}_\mathrm{CDW}$, which is consistent with magnetic excitations measured by inelastic neutron scattering. Unlike for some other cuprates, our results point to the absence of a discernible coupling between CDW and magnetic excitations.

Polarization resolved Cu $L_3$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering of orbital and spin excitations in NdBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$

High resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) has proven particularly effective in the determination of crystal field and spin excitations in cuprates. Its strength lies in the large Cu $L_{3}$ resonance and in the fact that the scattering cross section follows quite closely the single-ion model predictions, both in the insulating parent compounds and in the superconducting doped materials. However, the spectra become increasingly broader with (hole) doping, hence resolving and assigning spectral features has proven challenging even with the highest energy resolution experimentally achievable. Here we have overcome this limitation by measuring the complete polarization dependence of the RIXS spectra as function of momentum transfer and doping in thin films of NdBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$. Besides confirming the previous assignment of $dd$ and spin excitations (magnon, bimagnon) in the antiferromagnetic insulating parent compound, we unequivocally single out the actual spin-flip contribution at all dopings. We also demonstrate that the softening of $dd$ excitations is mainly attributed to the shift of the $xy$ peak to lower energy loss. These results provide a definitive assessment of the RIXS spectra of cuprates and demonstrate that RIXS measurements with full polarization control are practically feasible and highly informative.

Coupling between dynamic magnetic and charge-order correlations in the cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$

Charge order has now been observed in several cuprate high-temperature superconductors. We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiment on the electron-doped cuprate Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$ that demonstrates the existence of dynamic correlations at the charge order wave vector. Upon cooling we observe a softening in the electronic response, which has been predicted to occur for a d-wave charge order in electron-doped cuprates. At low temperatures, the energy range of these excitations coincides with that of the dispersive magnetic modes known as paramagnons. Furthermore, measurements where the polarization of the scattered photon is resolved indicate that the dynamic response at the charge order wave vector primarily involves spin-flip excitations. Overall, our findings indicate a coupling between dynamic magnetic and charge-order correlations in the cuprates.

Crossover from Collective to Incoherent Spin Excitations in Superconducting Cuprates Probed by Detuned Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Spin excitations in the overdoped high temperature superconductors Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ and (Bi,Pb)$_2$(Sr,La)$_{2}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ were investigated by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) as functions of doping and detuning of the incoming photon energy above the Cu-$L_3$ absorption peak. The RIXS spectra at optimal doping are dominated by a paramagnon feature with peak energy independent of photon energy, similar to prior results on underdoped cuprates. Beyond optimal doping, the RIXS data indicate a sharp crossover to a regime with a strong contribution from incoherent particle/hole excitations whose maximum shows a fluorescence-like shift upon detuning. The spectra of both compound families are closely similar, and their salient features are reproduced by exact-diagonalization calculations of the single-band Hubbard model on a finite cluster. The results are discussed in the light of recent transport experiments indicating a quantum phase transition near optimal doping.

Collective nature of spin excitations in superconducting cuprates probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We used resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) with and without analysis of the scattered photon polarization, to study dispersive spin excitations in the high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6+x over a wide range of doping levels (0.1 < x < 1). The excitation profiles were carefully monitored as the incident photon energy was detuned from the resonant condition, and the spin excitation energy was found to be independent of detuning for all x. These findings demonstrate that the largest fraction of the spin-flip RIXS profiles in doped cuprates arises from magnetic collective modes, rather than from incoherent particle-hole excitations as recently suggested theoretically [Benjamin et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 247002(2014)]. Implications for the theoretical description of the electron system in the cuprates are discussed.

The simultaneous measurement of energy and linear polarization of the scattered radiation in resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering

Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) in the soft x-ray range is an element-specific energy-loss spectroscopy used to probe the electronic and magnetic excitations in strongly correlated solids. In the recent years, RIXS has been progressing very quickly in terms of energy resolution and understanding of the experimental results, but the interpretation of spectra could further improve, sometimes decisively, from a full knowledge of the polarization of incident and scattered photons. Here we present the first implementation, in a high resolution RIXS spectrometer used to analyze the scattered radiation, of a device allowing the measurement of the degree of linear polarization. The system, based on a graded W/B4C multilayer mirror installed in proximity of the CCD detector, has been installed on the AXES spectrometer at the ESRF; it has been fully characterized and it has been used for a demonstration experiment at the Cu L3 edge on a high-Tc superconducting cuprate. The loss in efficiency suffered by the spectrometer equipped with this test facility was a factor 17.5. We propose also a more advanced version, suitable for a routine use on the next generation of RIXS spectrometers and with an overall efficiency up to 10%.

Antiferromagnetically spin polarized oxygen observed in magneto-electric TbMn2O5

We report the direct measurement of antiferromagnetic spin polarization at the oxygen sites in the multiferroic TbMn2O5, through resonant soft x-ray magnetic scattering. This supports recent theoretical models suggesting that the oxygen spin polarization is key to the magnetoelectric coupling mechanism. The spin polarization is observed through a resonantly enhanced diffraction signal at the oxygen K edge at the commensurate antiferromagnetic wavevector. Using the fdmnes code we have accurately reproduced the experimental data. We have established that the resonance arises through the spin polarization on the oxygen sites hybridized with the square based pyramid Mn3+ ions. Furthermore we have discovered that the position of the Mn3+ ion directly influences the oxygen spin polarization.

Nature of the magnetic order and origin of induced ferroelectricity in TbMnO$_3$

The magnetic structures which endow TbMnO$_3$ with its multiferroic properties have been reassessed on the basis of a comprehensive soft x-ray resonant scattering (XRS) study. The selectivity of XRS facilitated separation of the various contributions (Mn $L_2$ edge, Mn 3d moments; Tb M$_4$ edge, Tb 4f moments), while its variation with azimuth provided information on the moment direction of distinct Fourier components. When the data are combined with a detailed group theory analysis, a new picture emerges of the ferroelectric transition at 28 K. Instead of being driven by the transition from a collinear to a non-collinear magnetic structure, as has previously been supposed, it is shown to occur between two non-collinear structures.

A critical re-examination of resonant soft x-ray Bragg forbidden reflections in magnetite

Magnetite, Fe$_3$O$_4$, displays a highly complex low temperature crystal structure that may be charge and orbitally ordered. Many of the recent experimental claims of such ordering rely on resonant soft x-ray diffraction at the oxygen K and iron L edges. We have re-examined this system and undertaken soft x-ray diffraction experiments on a high-quality single crystal. Contrary to previous claims in the literature, we show that the intensity observed at the Bragg forbidden (001/2)$_c$ reflection can be explained purely in terms of the low-temperature structural displacements around the resonant atoms. This does not necessarily mean that magnetite is not charge or orbitally ordered, but rather that the present sensitivity of resonant soft x-ray experiments does not allow conclusive demonstration of such ordering.

Ordering of localized electronic states in multiferroic TbMnO3: a soft X-ray resonant scattering study

Soft X-ray resonant scattering (XRS) has been used to observe directly, for the first time, the ordering of localized electronic states on both the Mn and Tb sites in multiferroic TbMnO$_3$. Large resonant enhancement of the X-ray scattering cross-section were observed when the incident photon energy was tuned to either the Mn $L$ or Tb $M$ edges which provide information on the Mn 3d and Tb $4f$ electronic states, respectively. The temperature dependence of the XRS signal establishes, in a model independent way, that in the high-temperature phase (28 K $\leq$ T $\leq$ 42 K) the Mn 3d sublattices displays long-range order. The Tb $4f$ sublattices are found to order only on entering the combined ferroelectric/magnetic state below 28 K. Our results are discussed with respect to recent hard XRS experiments (sensitive to spatially extended orbitals) and neutron scattering.

Itinerant magnetism in Kondo crystal CeB6 as indicated by polarized neutron scattering

A magnetic Bragg reflection corresponding to the wave vector k13 = (2pi/a)[1/2,1/2,1/2] of the antiferro-quadrupolar ordering is found in CeB6 in zero magnetic field below the Neel temperature TN. Its intensity is two orders of magnitude weaker than those due to the basic magnetic structure [O. Zaharko et al., Phys. Rev. B 68, 214401 (2003)]. The peak has a width of the other Bragg reflections below TN, but widens abruptly at T = TN with simultaneous increase of intensity. Correlation length just above TN is of the order of 70 A. The peak intensity decreases to zero at T = 7 K with no visible anomaly at the antiferro-quadrupolar ordering temperature TQ = 3.3 K. The features of this magnetic ordering are typical for the itinerant magnetism with 5d electron of Ce3+ [Yu.S. Grushko et al., phys. stat. sol. (b) 128, 591 (1985)] being involved.

Coherent X-ray Scattering from Manganite Charge and Orbital Domains

We report coherent x-ray scattering studies of charge and orbital domains in manganite systems. The experiments were carried out on LaMnO_3 and Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_3, with the incident photon energy tuned near the Mn K edge. At room temperature, the orbital speckle pattern of LaMnO_3 was observed to be constant over a timescale of at least minutes, which is indicative of static orbital domains on this timescale. For Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_3, both charge and orbital speckle patterns were observed. The observation of the latter rules out the presence of fast orbital fluctuations, while long time series data-- on the order of several minutes-- were suggestive of slow dynamic behavior. In contrast, the charge order speckle patterns were static.
