Gauge-invariant microscopic kinetic theory of superconductivity in response to electromagnetic fields

Within a gauge-invariant microscopic kinetic theory, we study the electromagnetic response in the superconducting states. Both superfluid and normal-fluid dynamics are involved. We predict that the normal fluid is present only when the excited superconducting velocity $v_s$ is larger than a threshold $v_L=|Δ|/k_F$. Interestingly, with the normal fluid, we find that there exists friction between the normal-fluid and superfluid currents. Due to this friction, part of the superfluid becomes viscous. Therefore, a three-fluid model: normal fluid, non-viscous and viscous superfluids, is proposed. For the stationary magnetic response, at $v_s<v_L$ with only the non-viscous superfluid, the Meissner supercurrent is excited and the gap equation can reduce to Ginzburg-Landau equation. At $v_s{\ge}v_L$, with the normal fluid, non-viscous and viscous superfluids, in addition to the directly excited Meissner supercurrent in the superfluid, normal-fluid current is also induced through the friction drag with the viscous superfluid current. Due to the normal-fluid and viscous superfluid currents, the penetration depth is influenced by the scattering effect. In addition, a modified Ginzburg-Landau equation is proposed. We predict an exotic phase in which both the resistivity and superconducting gap are {\em finite}. As for the optical response, the excited ${v_s}$ oscillates with time. When $v_s<v_L$, only the non-viscous superfluid is present whereas at $v_s{\ge}v_L$, normal fluid, non-viscous and viscous superfluids are present. We show that the excited normal-fluid current exhibits the Drude-model behavior while the superfluid current consists of the Meissner supercurrent and Bogoliubov quasiparticle current. Due to the friction between the superfluid and normal-fluid currents, the optical conductivity is captured by the three-fluid model. ......

Real time data access log analysis system of EAST tokamak based on spark

The experiment data generated by the EAST device is getting larger and larger, and it is necessary to monitor the MDSplus data storage server on EAST. In order to facilitate the management of users on the MDSplus server, a real-time monitoring log analysis system is needed. The data processing framework adopted by this log analysis system is the Spark Streaming framework in Spark ecosphere, whose real-time streaming data is derived from MDSplus logs. The framework also makes use of key technologies such as log monitoring, aggregation and distribution with framework likes Flume and Kafka which makes it possible for MDSplus mass log data processing power. The system can process tens of millions of unprocessed MDSplus log information at a second level, then model the log information and display it on the web. This report introduces the design and implementation of the overall architecture of real time data access log analysis system based on spark. Experimental results show that the system is proved to be with steady and reliable performance and has an important application value to the management of fusion experiment data. The system has been designed and will be adopted in the next campaign and the system details will be given in the paper.

A catalogue of clusters of galaxies identified from all sky surveys of 2MASS, WISE, and SuperCOSMOS

We identify 47,600 clusters of galaxies from photometric data of Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), and SuperCOSMOS, among which 26,125 clusters are recognized for the first time and mostly in the sky outside the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) area. About 90% of massive clusters of M_{500}>3*10^{14} M_{\odot} in the redshift range of 0.025<z<0.3 have been detected from such survey data, and the detection rate drops down to 50% for clusters with a mass of M_{500}~1*10^{14} M_{\odot}. Monte Carlo simulations show that the false detection rate for the whole cluster sample is less than 5%. By cross-matching with ROSAT and XMM-Newton sources, we get 779 new X-ray cluster candidates which have X-ray counterparts within a projected offset of 0.2 Mpc.

Plasmonic enhancement of aligned semiconducting graphene nanoribbons

We couple photoluminescent semiconducting 7-atom wide armchair edge graphene nanoribbons to plasmonic nanoantenna arrays and demonstrate an enhancement of the photoluminescence and Raman scattering intensity of the nanoribbons by more than one order of magnitude. The increase in signal allows us to study Raman spectra with high signal-to-noise ratio. Using plasmonic enhancement we are able to detect the off-resonant Raman signals from the modified radial breathing-like mode (RBLM) due to physisorbed molecules, the 3rd order RBLM, and C-H vibrations. We find excellent agreement between data and simulations describing the spectral dependence of the enhancement and modifications of the polarization anisotropy. The strong field gradients in the optical near-field further allow us to probe the subwavelength coherence properties of the phonon modes in the nanoribbons. We theoretically model this considering a finite coherence length along the GNR direction. Our results allow estimating the coherence length in graphene nanoribbons.

Constraint on the Ground-state Mass of 21Al and Three-Nucleon Forces

Fragmentation cross section of $^{28}$Si + $^{9}$Be reaction at 75.8 MeV/u was analyzed for studying the decay mode of single-proton emission in $^{21}$Al (the proton-rich nucleus with neutron closed-shell of $N = 8$ and $T_z = -5/2$). With the comparison between the measured fragmentation cross section and the theoretical cross section produced by EPAX3.1a for the observed nuclei (i.e. $^{20}$Mg, $^{21}$Al and $^{22}$Si), the expected yield for a particle stable $^{21}$Al was estimated. With the exponential decay law, an upper limit of half-life of $13$ ns was determined. Using the single-proton penetration model, the upper limit of single-proton separation energy of $-105$ keV was deduced. This deduced mass limit agrees with the microscopic calculation based on nucleon-nucleon (NN) + three-nucleon (3N) forces in $sdf_{7/2}p_{3/2}$ valence space, which indicates the importance of 3N forces in $^{21}$Al.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in spin-orbit-coupled superconductors

We show that in the presence of magnetic field, two superconducting phases with the center-of-mass momentum of Cooper pair parallel to the magnetic field are induced in spin-orbit-coupled superconductor Li$_2$Pd$_3$B. Specifically, at small magnetic field, the center-of-mass momentum is induced due to the energy-spectrum distortion and no unpairing region with vanishing singlet correlation appears. We refer to this superconducting state as the drift-BCS state. By further increasing the magnetic field, the superconducting state falls into the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state with the emergence of the unpairing regions. The observed abrupt enhancement of the center-of-mass momenta and suppression on the order parameters during the crossover indicate the first-order phase transition. Enhanced Pauli limit and hence enlarged magnetic-field regime of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state, due to the spin-flip terms of the spin-orbit coupling, are revealed. We also address the triplet correlations induced by the spin-orbit coupling, and show that the Cooper-pair spin polarizations, generated by the magnetic field and center-of-mass momentum with the triplet correlations, exhibit totally different magnetic-field dependences between the drift-BCS and Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states.

Gapped superconductivity with all symmetries in InSb (110) quantum wells in proximity to s-wave superconductor in Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase or with a supercurrent

We show that all the singlet even-frequency, singlet odd-frequency, triplet even-frequency and triplet odd-frequency pairings, and together with the corresponding order parameters (gaps) can be realized in InSb (110) spin-orbit-coupled quantum well in proximity to s-wave superconductor in Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase or with a supercurrent. It is revealed that with the singlet even-frequency order parameter induced by the proximity effect, triplet even-frequency pairing is induced due to the broken spin-rotational symmetry by the spin-orbit coupling. Since the translational symmetry is broken by the center-of-mass momentum of Cooper pair in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase or with a supercurrent, the singlet odd-frequency pairing can be induced. With the translational and spin-rotational asymmetries, the triplet odd-frequency pairing is also realized. Then, we show that the corresponding order parameters can be obtained from the self-energy of the electron-electron Coulomb interaction with the dynamic screening. The singlet and the induced triplet even-frequency order parameters are found to exhibit the conventional s-wave and p-wave characters in the momentum space, respectively. Whereas for the induced odd-frequency order parameters in quantum well, the singlet and triplet ones show the p-wave and d-wave characters, respectively. Moreover, the p-wave character of the singlet odd-frequency order parameter exhibits anisotropy with respect to the direction of the center-of-mass momentum. While for the triplet one, we find that $d_{x^2}$-wave and $d_{xy}$-wave characters can be obtained with respect to the direction of the center-of-mass momentum. ......

The decay characteristic of $^{22}$Si and its ground-state mass significantly affected by three-nucleon forces

The decay of the proton-rich nucleus $^{22}$Si was studied by a silicon array coupled with germanium clover detectors. Nine charged-particle groups are observed and most of them are recognized as $β$-delayed proton emission. A charged-particle group at 5600 keV is identified experimentally as $β$-delayed two-proton emission from the isobaric analog state of $^{22}$Al. Another charged-particle emission without any $β$ particle at the low energy less than 300 keV is observed. The half-life of $^{22}$Si is determined as 27.5 (18) ms. The experimental results of $β$-decay of $^{22}$Si are compared and in nice agreement with shell-model calculations. The mass excess of the ground state of $^{22}$Si deduced from the experimental data shows that three-nucleon (3N) forces with repulsive contributions have significant effects on nuclei near the proton drip line.

Beta-decay study of $T_z=-2$ proton-rich nucleus $^{20}$Mg

The $β$ decay of the drip-line nucleus $^{20}$Mg gives important information on resonances in $^{20}$Na, which are relevant for the astrophysical $rp$-process. A detailed $β$ decay spectroscopic study of $^{20}$Mg was performed by a continuous-implantation method. A detection system was specially developed for charged-particle decay studies, giving improved spectroscopic information including the half-life of $^{20}$Mg, the excitation energies, the branching ratios, and the log $ft$ values for the states in $^{20}$Na populated in the $β$ decay of $^{20}$Mg. A new proton branch was observed and the corresponding excited state in $^{20}$Na was proposed. The large isospin asymmetry for the mirror decays of $^{20}$Mg and $^{20}$O was reproduced, as well. However, no conclusive conclusion can be draw about the astrophysically interesting 2645~keV resonance in $^{20}$Na due to the limited statistics.

Spin diffusion in p-type bilayer WSe$_2$

We investigate the steady-state out-of-plane spin diffusion in p-type bilayer WSe2 in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and Hartree-Fock effective magnetic field. The out-of-plane components of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling serve as the opposite Zeeman-like fields in the two valleys. Together with the identical Hartree-Fock effective magnetic fields, different total effective magnetic field strengths in the two valleys are obtained. It is further revealed that due to the valley-dependent total effective magnetic field strength, similar (different) spin-diffusion lengths in the two valleys are observed at small (large) spin injection. Nevertheless, it is shown that the intervalley hole-phonon scattering can suppress the difference in the spin-diffusion lengths at large spin injection due to the spin-conserving intervalley charge transfers with the opposite transfer directions between spin-up and -down holes. Moreover, with a fixed large pure spin injection, we predict the build-up of a steady-state valley polarization during the spin diffusion with the maximum along the diffusion direction being capable of exceeding 1 %. It is revealed that the valley polarization arises from the induced quasi hot-hole Fermi distributions with different effective hot-hole temperatures between spin-up and -down holes during the spin diffusion, leading to the different intervalley charge transfer rates in the opposite transfer directions. Additionally, it is also shown that by increasing the injected spin polarization, the hole density or the impurity density, the larger valley polarization can be obtained.

The self-consistent analysis for sub-barrier fusion enhancement effect in Ca + Ca and Ni + Ni

The fusion dynamic mechanism of heavy-ions at energies near the Coulomb barrier is complicated and still not very clear up to now. Accordingly, a self-consistent method based on the CCFULL calculations has been developed and applied for an ingoing study of the effect of the positive Q-value neutron transfer (PQNT) channels in this work. The typical experimental fusion data of Ca + Ca and Ni + Ni is analyzed within the unified calculation scheme. The PQNT effect in near-barrier fusion is further confirmed based on the self-consistent analysis and extracted quantitatively.

A robust and efficient adaptive multigrid solver for the optimal control of phase field formulations of geometric evolution laws

We propose and investigate a novel solution strategy to efficiently and accurately compute approximate solutions to semilinear optimal control problems, focusing on the optimal control of phase field formulations of geometric evolution laws. The optimal control of geometric evolution laws arises in a number of applications in fields including material science, image processing, tumour growth anda cell motility. In the current work we focus on a phase field formulation of the optimal control problem, hence exploiting the well developed mathematical theory for the optimal control of semilinear parabolic partial differential equations. Approximation of the resulting optimal control problem is computationally challenging, requiring massive amounts of computational time and memory storage. The main focus of this work is to propose, derive, implement and test an efficient solution method for such problems. The solver for the discretised partial differential equations is based upon a geometric multigrid method incorporating advanced techniques to deal with the nonlinearities in the problem and utilising adaptive mesh refinement. An in-house two-grid solution strategy for the forward and adjoint problems, that significantly reduces memory requirements and CPU time, is proposed and investigated computationally. Furthermore, parallelisation as well as an adaptivestep gradient update for the control are employed to further improve efficiency. Along with a detailed description of our proposed solution method together with its implementation we present a number of computational results that demonstrate and evaluate our algorithms with respect to accuracy and efficiency. A highlight of the present work is simulation results on the optimal control in 3-D which would be computationally infeasible without the solution strategies proposed in the present work.

Model-independent determination of the strong-phase difference between D^0 and D^0-bar-> K^0_S,L h^+ h^- (h=pi,K) and its impact on the measurement of the CKM angle gamma/phi_3

We report the first determination of the relative strong-phase difference between D^0 -> K^0_S,L K^+ K^- and D^0-bar -> K^0_S,L K^+ K^-. In addition, we present updated measurements of the relative strong-phase difference between D^0 -> K^0_S,L pi^+ pi^- and D^0-bar -> K^0_S,L pi^+ pi^-. Both measurements exploit the quantum coherence between a pair of D^0 and D^0-bar mesons produced from psi(3770) decays. The strong-phase differences measured are important for determining the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle gamma/phi_3 in B^- -> K^- D^0-tilde decays, where D^0-tilde is a D^0 or D^0-bar meson decaying to K^0_S h^+ h^- (h=pi,K), in a manner independent of the model assumed to describe the D^0 -> K^0_S h^+ h^- decay. Using our results, the uncertainty in gamma/phi_3 due to the error on the strong-phase difference is expected to be between 1.7 and 3.9 degrees for an analysis using B^- K^- D^0-tilde D^0-tilde -> K^0_S pi^+ pi^- decays, and between 3.2 and 3.9 degrees for an analysis based on B^- -> K^- D^0-tilde, D^0-tilde -> K^0_S K^+ K^- decays. A measurement is also presented of the CP-odd fraction, F_-, of the decay D^0 -> K^0_S K^+ K^- in the region of the phi -> K^+ K^- resonance. We find that in a region within 0.01 GeV^2/c^4 of the nominal phi mass squared F_- > 0.91 at the 90% confidence level.

Molecular-beam epitaxy of monolayer and bilayer WSe2: A scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy study and deduction of exciton binding energy

Interests in two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides have prompted some recent efforts to grow ultrathin layers of these materials epitaxially using molecular-beam epitaxy. However, growths of monolayer and bilayer WSe2, an important member of the transition-metal dichalcogenides family, by the molecular-beam epitaxy method remain uncharted probably because of the difficulty in generating tungsten fluxes from the elemental source. In this work, we present a scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study of molecular-beam epitaxy-grown WSe2 monolayer and bilayer, showing atomically flat epifilm with no domain boundary defect. This contrasts epitaxial MoSe2 films grown by the same method, where a dense network of the domain boudaries defects is present. The scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements of monolayer and bilayer WSe2 domains of the same sample reveal not only the bandgap narrowing upon increasing the film thickness from monolayer to bilayer, but also a band-bending effect across the boundary between monolayer and bilayer domains. This band-bending appears to be dictated by the edge states at steps of the bilayer islands. Finally, comparison is made between the scanning tunneling spectroscopy-measured electronic bandgaps with the exciton emission energies measured by photoluminescence, and the exciton binding energies in monolayer and bilayer WSe2/MoSe2 are thus estimated.

Hole spin relaxation in bilayer WSe$_2$

We investigate the hole spin relaxation due to the Rashba spin-orbit coupling induced by an external perpendicular electric field in bilayer WSe$_2$. The Rashba spin-orbit coupling coefficients in bilayer WSe$_2$ are constructed from the corresponding monolayer ones. In contrast to monolayer WSe$_2$, the out-of-plane component of the bilayer Rashba spin-orbit coupling acts as a Zeeman-like field with opposite directions but identical values in the two valleys. For in-plane spins, this Zeeman-like field, together with the intervalley hole-phonon scattering, opens an intervalley spin relaxation channel, which is found to dominate the in-plane spin relaxation in bilayer WSe$_2$ even at low temperature. For out-of-plane spins, this Zeeman-like field is superimposed by the identical Hartree-Fock effective magnetic fields in the two valleys, and hence different total effective magnetic fields between two valleys are obtained. Owing to the large difference of the total fields at large spin polarization, different out-of-plane spin relaxation times in the two valleys are obtained when the intervalley hole-phonon scattering is weak at low temperature and low hole density. This difference in the spin relaxation times can be suppressed by enhancing the intervalley hole-phonon scattering through increasing temperature or hole density. Moreover, at large spin polarization and low temperature, due to the weak intravalley hole-phonon scattering but relatively strong hole-hole Coulomb scattering, the fast spin precessions are found to result in a quasi hot-hole Fermi distribution characterized by an effective hot-hole temperature larger than the temperature, which also enhances the intervalley scattering. During this process, it is interesting to discover that the initially equal hole densities in the two valleys are broken in the temporal evolution, and a valley polarization is built up. ....

Optical control of internal electric fields in band-gap graded InGaN nanowires

InGaN nanowires are suitable building blocks for many future optoelectronic devices. We show that a linear grading of the indium content along the nanowire axis from GaN to InN introduces an internal electric field evoking a photocurrent. Consistent with quantitative band structure simulations we observe a sign change in the measured photocurrent as a function of photon flux. This negative differential photocurrent opens the path to a new type of nanowire-based photodetector. We demonstrate that the photocurrent response of the nanowires is as fast as 1.5 ps.

Localized states in a semiconductor quantum ring with a tangent wire

We extend a special kind of localized state trapped at the intersection due to the geometric confinement, first proposed in a three-terminal-opening T-shaped structure [Euro. Phys. Lett. {\bf 55}, 539 (2001)], into a ring geometry with a tangent connection to the wire. In this ring geometry, there exists one localized state trapped at the intersection with energy lying inside the lowest subband. We systematically study this localized state and the resulting Fano-type interference due to the coupling between this localized state and the continuum ones. It is found that the increase of the inner radius of ring weakens the coupling to the continuum ones and the asymmetric Fano dip fades away. A wide energy gap in transmission appears due to the interplay of two types of antiresonances: the Fano-type antiresonance and the structure antiresonance. The size of this antiresonance gap can be modulated by adjusting the magnetic flux. Moreover, a large transmission amplitude can be obtained in the same gap area. The strong robustness of the antiresonance gap is demonstrated showing the feasibility of the proposed geometry for a real application.

Fully Gapped s-wave-like Superconducting State and Electronic Structures in the Ir0.95Pd0.05Te2 Single Crystals with Strong Spin-orbital Coupling

Due to the large spin-orbital coupling in the layered 5d-transition metal chalcogenides compound, the occurrence of superconductivity in Ir2-xPdxTe2 offers a good chance to search for possible topological superconducting states in this system. We did comprehensive studies on the superconducting properties and electronic structures of single crystalline Ir0.95Pd0.05Te2 samples. The superconducting gap size, critical fields and coherence length along different directions were experimentally determined. Macroscopic bulk measurements and microscopic low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy results suggest that Ir0.95Pd0.05Te2 possesses a BCS-like s-wave state. No sign of zero bias conductance peak were found in the vortex core at 0.4K.
