Determination of $Z'$ Gauge Couplings to Quarks and Leptons at Future Hadron Colliders

We point out that at future hadron colliders the ratio of cross sections for $pp\to Z'\to \ell^+\ell^-$ in two rapidity bins is a useful probe of the relative couplings of the $Z'$ to $u$ and $d$ quarks. Combined with the forward-backward asymmetry, the rare decay modes $Z'\to W \ellν_\ell$, and three associated productions $pp\to Z'V$ ($V=Z,W,γ$), and assuming inter-family universality, small $Z-Z'$ mixing, and the $Z'$ charge commuting with the $SU_{2L}$ generators, three out of four normalized couplings could be extracted. An analysis of the statistical uncertainties expected for the above probes at the LHC for typical models with $M_{Z'}\simeq1$ TeV shows that one lepton coupling and two combinations of quark couplings could be determined to around 5\%, 20\%, and 30\%, respectively. This allows for a clear distinction between models.

Z' Decays into Four Fermions

If a new $Z'$ is discovered with a mass $\sim 1 \ TeV$ at LHC/SSC, its (rare) decays into two charged leptons plus missing transverse energy will probe the $Z'$ coupling to the lepton doublet $(ν,e)_L$ and to $W^+W^-$, allowing further discrimination among extended electroweak models.

Precision bounds on $m_H$ and $m_t

We perform a fit to precise electroweak data to determine the Higgs and top masses. Penalty functions taking into account their production limits are included. We find ${\displaystyle m_H=65^{+245}_{-4}\ GeV}$ and ${\displaystyle m_t=122^{+25}_{-20}\ GeV}$. However whereas the top $χ^2$ distribution behaves properly near the minimum, the Higgs $χ^2$ distribution does not, indicating a statistical fluctuation or new physics. In fact no significative bound on the Higgs mass can be given at present. However, if the LEP accuracy is improved and the top is discovered in the preferred range of top masses, a meaningful bound on the Higgs mass could be obtained within the standard model framework.
