Analytical continuum mechanics à la Hamilton-Piola: least action principle for second gradient continua and capillary fluids

In this paper a stationary action principle is proven to hold for capillary fluids, i.e. fluids for which the deformation energy has the form suggested, starting from molecular arguments, for instance by Cahn and Hilliard. Remark that these fluids are sometimes also called Korteweg-de Vries or Cahn-Allen. In general continua whose deformation energy depend on the second gradient of placement are called second gradient (or Piola-Toupin or Mindlin or Green-Rivlin or Germain or second gradient) continua. In the present paper, a material description for second gradient continua is formulated. A Lagrangian action is introduced in both material and spatial description and the corresponding Euler-Lagrange bulk and boundary conditions are found. These conditions are formulated in terms of an objective deformation energy volume density in two cases: when this energy is assumed to depend on either C and grad C or on C^-1 and grad C^-1 ; where C is the Cauchy-Green deformation tensor. When particularized to energies which characterize fluid materials, the capillary fluid evolution conditions (see e.g. Casal or Seppecher for an alternative deduction based on thermodynamic arguments) are recovered. A version of Bernoulli law valid for capillary fluids is found and, in the Appendix B, useful kinematic formulas for the present variational formulation are proposed. Historical comments about Gabrio Piola's contribution to continuum analytical mechanics are also presented. In this context the reader is also referred to Capecchi and Ruta.

Commentary about the paper "Continuum Mech. Thermodyn. (2010) 22:163-176" by Podio Guidugli and Vianello and some related papers on higher gradient theories

In this commentary we try to make clearer the state of the art concerning the relation between mechanical contact interactions and the different notions of stresses. We emphasize the importance of the concept of virtual displacements. Its role has been recognized in Mechanics and in Continuum Mechanics long ago (see e.g. [59], [45], or [12], [13]) and it is central as well when starting with an expression of the power expended by internal stresses and deducing the form of contact interactions as when starting with some form of the contact interactions and developping a representation theorem for these contact interactions based on the Cauchy tetrahedron construction.

Models of Laminated Piezoelectric Beams Including Effect of Transverse Interactions Between Different Layers

The present work attempts to present a consistent and efficient approach to piezoelectric laminated beams. The influence of hypotheses on three-dimensional sectional deformations and stress distributions on the estimate of the beam electromechanical properties is analyzed. By exploiting a mixed variational formulation and Lagrange multipliers method, an Euler- Bernoulli-like beam model which accounts for transverse interactions between different is presented. The fully coupled electromechanical nature of the system is described by including both mechanical and electrical kinematical descriptors and both direct and inverse piezoelectric effects. For a sandwich piezoelectric beam and for a two-layers beam, expressions of the beam constitutive coefficients are provided and the main features of the proposed model are highlighted. Comparisons with experimental data and results from standard modelling approaches are presented. As main peculiarity, the proposed beam model coherently estimates the equivalent piezoelectric capacitance and transverse normal stress distribution also for beam composed by elastic and piezoelectric layers of comparable thickness.

Different Network Topologies for Distributed Electric Damping of Beam Vibrations

In this work passive electric damping of structural vibrations by distributed piezoelectric transducers and electric networks is analyzed. Different distributed electric controllers are examined as finite degrees of freedom systems and their performances are compared. Modal reduction is used to optimize the electric parameters

Optimal piezo-electro-mechanical coupling to control plate vibrations

A new way of coupling electrical and mechanical waves, using piezoelectric effect, is presented here. Since the energy exchange between two systems supporting wave propagation is maximum when their evolution is governed by similar equations, hence, an optimal electromechanical coupling is obtained by designing an electric network which is "analog" to the mechanical structure to be controlled. In this paper, we exploit this idea to enhance the coupling, between a Kirchhoff-Love plate and one possible synthesis of its circuital analog, as obtained by means of a set of piezoelectric actuators uniformly distributed upon the plate. It is shown how this approach allows for an optimal energy exchange between the mechanic and the electric forms independent of the modal evolution of the structure. Moreover, we show how an efficient electric dissipation of the mechanical energy can be obtained adding dissipative elements in the electric network.

Synthesis of electrical networks interconnecting PZT actuators to damp mechanical vibrations

This paper proves that it is possible to damp mechanical vibrations of some beam frames by means of piezoelectric actuators interconnected via passive networks. We create a kind of electromechanical wave guide where the electrical velocity group equals the mechanical one thus enabling an electromechanical energy transfer. Numerical simulations are presented which prove the technical feasibility of proposed device

A micro-structured continuum modelling compacting fluid-saturated grounds: the effects of pore-size scale parameter

The effect of a "pore-size" length-scale parameter l on compaction of grounds with fluid inclusions is studied. They are modelled as continua endowed with micro-structure by means of the macro-modelling procedure proposed in [2]. We show the dependence of field evolution equations on the micro-structure parameter l and compare our model with the homogenized asymptotic ones. The consideration of the pore size 1 allows us to forecast the onset of micro-displacement waves as a consequence of a ground settling and to suggest a possible description of the genesis of certain microearthquakes [5] [6].

Generalized Hooke's law for isotropic second gradient materials

In the spirit of Germain the most general objective stored elastic energy for a second gradient material is deduced using a literature result of Fortuné & Vallée. Linear isotropic constitutive relations for stress and hyperstress in terms of strain and strain-gradient are then obtained proving that these materials are characterized by seven elastic moduli and generalizing previous studies by Toupin, Mindlin and Sokolowski. Using a suitable decomposition of the strain-gradient, it is found a necessary and sufficient condition, to be verified by the elastic moduli, assuring positive definiteness of the stored elastic energy. The problem of warping in linear torsion of a prismatic second gradient cylinder is formulated, thus obtaining a possible measurement procedure for one of the second gradient elastic moduli.

An Eshelbian approach to the nonlinear mechanics of constrained solid-fluid mixtures

Looking at rational mixture theories within the context of a new perspective, this work aims to put forward a proposal for an Eshelbian approach to the nonlinear mechanics of a constrained solid-fluid mixture, made up of an inhomogeneous poroelastic solid and an inviscid compressible fluid, which do not undergo any chemical reaction.

Wave motions in unbounded poroelastic solids infused with compressible fluids

Looking at rational solid-fluid mixture theories in the context of their biomechanical perspectives, this work aims at proposing a two-scale constitutive theory of a poroelastic solid infused with an inviscid compressible fluid. The propagation of steady-state harmonic plane waves in unbounded media is investigated in both cases of unconstrained solid-fluid mixtures and fluid-saturated poroelastic solids. Relevant effects on the resulting characteristic speed of longitudinal and transverse elastic waves, due to the constitutive parameters introduced, are finally highlighted and discussed.

Structural-Damage Detection by Distributed Piezoelectric Transducers and Tuned Electric Circuits

A novel technique for damage detection of structures is introduced and discussed. It is based on purely electric measurements of the state variables of an electric network coupled to the main structure through a distributed set of piezoelectric patches. The constitutive parameters of this auxiliary network are optimized to increase the sensitivity of global measurements- as the frequency, response functions relative to selected electric degrees of freedom-with respect to a given class of variations in the structural-mechanical properties. Because the proposed method is based on purely electric input and output measurements, it allows for accurate results in the identification and localization of damages. Use of the electric frequency-response function to identify the mechanical damage leads to nonconvex optimization problems; therefore the proposed sensitivity-enhanced identification procedure becomes computationally efficient if an a priori knowledge about the damage is available.

Passive damping of beam vibrations through distributed electric networks and piezoelectric transducers: prototype design and experimental validation

The aim of this work is two-fold: to design devices for passive electric damping of structural vibrations by distributed piezoelectric transducers and electric networks, and to experimentally validate the effectiveness of such a damping concept. Two different electric networks are employed, namely a purely resistive network and an inductive-resistive one. The presented devices can be considered as distributed versions of the well-known resistive and resonant shunt of a single piezoelectric transducer. The technicalfeasibility and damping effectiveness of the proposed novel devices are assessed through the construction of an experimental prototype. Experimental results are shown to be in very good agreement with theoretical predictions. It is proved that the presented technique allows for a substantial reduction in the inductances used when compared with those required by the single resonant shunted transducer. In particular, it is shown that the required inductance decreases when the number of piezoelectric elements is increased. The electric networks are optimized in order to reduce forced vibrations close to the first resonance frequency. Nevertheless, the damping effectiveness for higher modes is experimentally proved. As well as specific results, fundamental theoretical and experimental considerations for passive distributed vibration control are provided.

Purely electrical damping of vibrations in arbitrary PEM plates: a mixed non-conforming FEM-Runge-Kutta time evolution analysis

A new numerical code, based upon a mixed FEM-Runge-Kutta method, is used for the analysis and design of plane 2-D smart structures. The code is applied to the study of arbitrarily shaped PEM plates, based on a weak formulation of their governing equations, [17]. The optimal parameters needed to synthesize appropriate electric networks are computed, and the overall performances of such plates are investigated. Two examples are studied: firstly, a simple case is used to test the main features of the code; secondly, a more complex PEM plate is designed and analyzed by means of the proposed numerical approach.

Almansi-type boundary conditions for electric potential inducing flexure in linear piezoelectric beams

Using the recent results found in [1, 2] we prove that it is possible to induce flexur in linear piezoelectric beams by means of quadratic Almansi type boundary conditions for the electric potential. Beams constituted by transversely isotropic piezoelectric materials whose symmetry axis is parallel to the axis of the beam are considered. Our choice of boundary conditions for the electric potential has been suggested by the results found in [1, 3]. An explicit expression of material parameters that influenc flexur is given in terms of piezoelectric moduli.

Edge Contact Forces and Quasi-Balanced Power

We consider continuous media in which contact edge forces are present. Introducing the notion of quasi-balanced contact force distribution, we are able to prove the conjectures by Noll and Virga [1] concerning the representation of contact edge forces. We generalize the Hamel-Noll theorem on the Cauchy postulate. Then we adapt the celebrated tetrahedron construction of Cauchy in order to obtain a representation theorem for stress states. In fact, we show that two stress tensors of order two and three are necessary for such a representation. Moreover we f nd the relationship between the notion of interstitial working introduced by Dunn and Serrin [2] and the notion of contact edge force.
