Discovery of smectic charge and pair-density-wave orders in topological monolayer 1T$^\prime$-MoTe$_2$

Electronic liquid-crystal phases are observed in numerous strongly-correlated systems including high-temperature superconductors. However, identifying these exotic phases and understanding their interplay with superconductivity in topological materials remain challenging. Here we employ a cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy to discover a smectic (stripe) charge order (CO) and a primary pair-density-wave (PDW) in topological monolayer 1T$^\prime$-MoTe$_2$. The two orders are spatially modulated unidirectionally at the same wavevector, but have a marked spatial phase difference of about 2$π$/5. Importantly, the primary PDW state features a two-gap superconductivity below the transition temperature of 6.0 K and induces another unique particle-hole-symmetric CO at twice the PDW wavevector. Combining these results and our density functional calculations, we reveal that the two smectic orders are primarily driven by nesting behaviors between electron and hole pockets. Our findings establish monolayer 1T$^\prime$-MoTe$_2$ as a topological paradigm for exploring electronic smecticity, which intertwines with multiple preexisting symmetry-breaking states.

The soft-mode phonons mediated unconventional superconductivity in monolayer 1T'-WTe2

Recent experiments have tuned the monolayer 1T'-WTe2 to be superconducting by electrostatic gating. Here, we theoretically study the phonon-mediated superconductivity in monolayer 1T'-WTe2 via charge doping. We reveal that the emergence of soft-mode phonons with specific momentum is crucial to give rise to the superconductivity in electron-doping regime, whereas no such soft-mode phonons and no superconductivity emerge in hole-doping regime. We also find a superconducting dome, which can be attributed to the change of Fermi surface nesting condition as electron doping. By taking into account the experimentally established strong anisotropy of temperature-dependent upper critical field H_{c2} between the in-plane and out-of-plane directions, we show that the superconducting state probably has the unconventional equal-spin-triplet pairing in A_{u} channel of C_{2h} point group. Our studies provide a promising understanding to the doping dependent superconductivity and strong anisotropy of H_{c2} in monolayer 1T'-WTe2.

Raman spectrum of 1T'-WTe2 under tensile strain: A first-principles prediction

Monolayer WTe2 attracts rapidly growing interests for its large-gap quantum spin Hall effect, which enables promising apllications in flexible logic devices. Due to one-dimensional W-W chains,1T'-WTe2 exhibits unique anisotropic structure and promising properties, which can be modified by simply applying strains. Based on the first-principles simulations, we show that phonon branch undergoes soft down to negative frequency at special q points under different critical strains, i.e., epsilon_a = 11.55 percent along a-axis (with W-W chains) direction, epsilon_b = 7.0 percent along b-axis direction and epsilon_ab = 8.44 percent along biaxial direction. Before each critical strain, the Raman-shift of A1_g, A3_g, and A4_g modes, corresponding to the main peaks in Raman spectra of 1T'-WTe2 , shows anisotropic response to uniaxial strain but most sensitive to biaxial strain. Interestingly, we find that the frequency shift of A3_g mode show parabolic characters of strained 1T'-WTe2, then we split it into two parts and it shows a Raman-shift transition at about 5 percent strains. While for the A1_g and A4_g modes, the frequencies change linearly. Through careful structure and vibration analysis, we try to explain these Raman irregularity in strained 1T'-WTe2.

Extremely large magnetoresistance in a topological semimetal candidate pyrite PtBi2

While pyrite-type PtBi2 with face-centered cubic structure has been predicted to be a three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal, experimental study on its physical properties remains absent. Here we report the angular-dependent magnetoresistance (MR) measurements of PtBi2 single-crystal under high magnetic fields. We observed extreme large unsaturated magnetoresistance (XMR) up to 11.2 million percent at T = 1.8 K in a magnetic field of 33 T, which surpasses the previously reported Dirac materials, such as WTe2, LaSb and NbP. The crystals exhibit an ultrahigh mobility and significant Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) quantum oscillations with nontrivial Berry's phase. Analysis of Hall resistivity indicates that the XMR can be ascribed to the nearly compensated electron and hole. Our experimental results associated with the ab initio calculations suggest that pyrite PtBi2 is a topological semimetal candidate which might provide a platform for exploring topological materials with XMR in noble metal alloys.

Anisotropic Fabry-Pérot resonant states confined within nano-steps on the topological insulator surface

The peculiar nature of topological surface states, such as absence of backscattering, weak anti-localization, and quantum anomalous Hall effect, has been demonstrated mainly in bulk and film of topological insulator (TI), using surface sensitive probes and bulk transport probes. However, it is equally important and experimentally challenging to confine massless Dirac fermions with nano-steps on TI surfaces. This potential structure has similar ground with linearly-dispersed photons in Fabry-Pérot resonators, while reserving fundamental differences from well-studied Fabry-Pérot resonators and quantum corrals on noble metal surfaces. In this paper, we study the massless Dirac fermions confined within steps along the $x$ ($Γ\mathtt{-}$K) or $y$ ($Γ\mathtt{-}$M) direction on the TI surface, and the Fabry-Pérot-like resonances in the electronic local density of states (LDOS) between the steps are found. Due to the remarkable warping effect in the topological surface states, the LDOS confined in the step-well running along $Γ$-M direction exhibit anisotropic resonance patterns as compared to those in the step-well along $Γ$-K direction, which can be detected by scanning tunneling microscopy. The transmittance properties and spin orientation of Dirac fermion in both cases are also anisotropic in the presence of warping effect.
